I am looking for the source code of the android lock screen. It can be for any version of Android (1.5, 1.6, 2.0, etc).
I tried looking in the repository at: https://android.googlesource.com/, but it doesn't look like it's under platform/frameworks/base. Maybe it's closed source?
Do an actual full checkout of the source according to Google's directions.
As of Android 4.2, the keyguard source is at frameworks/base/policy/src/com/android/internal/policy/impl/keyguard. There's a mirror on GitHub you can look at online (I pegged this link to the JB MR 1.1 release in case the location changes again in a future release).
When this question was originally answered, Android 2.3 and lower had their lockscreen source at frameworks/policies/base/phone/com/android/internal/policy/impl.
You can also view these sources online in their GitHub mirror; that source is still kicking in the current repo, but hasn't been updated in several years.
For those who are on kitkat (android 4.4) or above source code, it seems the code has been moved to
frameworks/base/packages/Keyguard

I'm searching for tools that would allow me to index and navigate within AOSP source tree a little bit easier.
My team works mostly at the lower level (so C and C++), but we interface with Java quite a bit. Currently we use:
ack-grep,
ctags,
cscope.
Since we're building a whole platform, we're not limited to just our code, but sometimes also need to understand better what's happening inside Android.
I currently make an attempt to use OpenGrok -- indexing is far from being done and the log is already swollen from git warnings.
The tools we currently use are hardly a convenient way to navigate the code. I would like to reach out for Android hackers wisdom - how do you navigate the code?
For the Java part Android Code Search is quite a blast. Unfortunately, I think it's "online-only" And also, for the low-level (C/C++) stuff things need to evolve a bit.

I am looking for applications to see how they are built, features etc...
For example the app smspopup seems very nice for studying.
Does anybody know any other worthwhile open source projects?
I always suggest the iosched project as a pretty full example, I would start downloading the project and learning everything from the source code. As it is developed by Google developers, it fulfills all Android code patterns and also has the latest Android Material design.
If you want more Android projects, there are several pages for it in github.

Well i am trying to find a good software which helps me in coding. Hassle free and a bit helpy?
As of now eclipse is generally used by most of the people around the world. You can download the same either from eclipse official site and download the plugin for the same
Or you can use Android studio for the same. To do the same you can download it from the official android developers site https://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html .
Do keep in mind that after some time, android studio may be used more by people as it is developed only for android development and also google is stopping to provide support for eclipse.
One more thing that, once you download the software, you will need to install sdk's for the api level for which you want to develop
All the support for development for android is available at the above mentioned link. Information about all the libraries are also available at the same. For more resources, you can always use youtube for the possible leacture series and also use stackoverflow and codata whenever you are stuck.

But, There is no tree for lollipop as the link shows
