Cannot bring up "Reference Chooser" window from Properties in Eclipse Android SDK
(1 answer)
Closed 2 years ago.
I am using Eclipse on Linux Mint for android development. When I select any object and view its properties, I am not able to view the pop-up window which normally appear while selecting certain properties like GRAVITY, INPUT METHOD etc. I have attached the screen shot:
even after clicking the GRAVITY property, no window appeared.
As a workaround, try going to the render target dropdown (which is the dropdown showing "19" above the layout towards the right) and switching to an earlier version, such as 18.

How do I get the Layout Validation window in Android Studio? It's usually listed under View > Tool windows. Is there a solution that helps you see your layouts displayed on different screen sizes in realtime without actually running an emulator or actual device?
As per Android Studio version 4.1.3, it's still there in
View -> Tool Windows -> Layout Validation
If you can't see it,
go to settings
search for Layout Validation
Click on KeyMap
Double click on Layout Validation
Add keyboard shortcut
As of Arctic Fox 2020.3.1, it seems to appear only if you are in the XML layout editor. It doesn't appear to work (yet) for Jetpack Compose previews.
In order that the Layout Validation window appears, you have to open some of your views (activity, fragment,...) xml layout. Then, the window should automatically appear in the upper right corner of the IDE window. See here:
https://developer.android.com/studio/debug/layout-inspector#layout-validation
If it doesn't appear, then it should be listed under View > Tool Windows

Android studio 3.5 refactor issue

Menu -> Code -> Reformat Code
Previous Android Studio version, my hands are very used to click Ctl+Alt+L to format code whenever I have typed some code block. After I updated to Android Studio 3.5, I formatted the code in XML and it is giving me wrong arrangement of my views and destroying my design.
Here is the design before code reformatting.
After code reformatted (click -> Ctl+Alt+L), my views was shuffled in both design and xml code side. please see second picture.
It seems a bug and I already reported it to Google Issue Tracker.
I just got answer from one of my colleague. That works well.
Settings -> Editor -> Code Style -> XML-> Set From -> Predefined
Style > Android.
When I start Android Studio, settings related to the tooltip / floating doc window seem to revert back to normal. Specifically, I like the right hand side of my IDE to show doc info. However, I don't see settings for the default behavior of this window, just a toggle for turning it on or off.
This related question shows a screenshot of the doc window I speak of, but my window shows full size unlike the poster here: Change default Quick Doc / Documentation hover size in Android Studio
What I like to do when opening any Android Studio project for the day is:
Hover over something to get the Documentation window to appear (covering the editor window almost entirely)
Go to the settings in that popup and UNcheck Floating, while leaving Pinned checked
Resize the width of the documentation pane which is now docked on the right like I want
This has been old for quite some time, repeating this step, sometimes being startled when I hover and the whole window pops up in my face. Whether global defaults or per project defaults are available, I'd like to know.
Can I set this default behavior and if so how? I am running Ubuntu or some flavor of linux on the dev PCs, so I am not interested in Windows-only solutions.
To change floating window to pinned by default edit the file:
.AndroidStudio2.3\config\options\window.manager.xml
with : <window_info id="Structure" active="false" anchor="right" auto_hide="true" internal_type="DOCKED" type="DOCKED" visible="false" show_stripe_button="true" weight="0.25" sideWeight="0.5" order="1" side_tool="false" content_ui="tabs" />
Hope thi helps!

Android eclipse editor: Unable to edit properties
I have changed my computer recently with the last version of Eclipse and ADT plugin and I'm confused.
I have noticed some changed with the ADT plugin and now I can't put specific values in the properties box in Eclipse.
I used to click on a Layout (in graphical View); then I went to the properties box and change one of a Layout properties to a specific value like 50dp.
Now I don't have a choice, I can only select fill_parent, wrap_content, match_parent ...
I order to do what I want, I need to edit xml manually.
Do I miss something or not ?
If you look in the toolbar just above your layout, use the button with a dashed square in it.
Eclipse Android Graphical Layout is not giving the options on properties window.
example: When i select any widget on my graphical layout editor to show the properties, when i click on "Text" property (value field) it shows the "..." button to select a string. When i click on the button, nothing happens and i have to fill it by myself. The same for other properties like Gravity (i have to fill it by myself instead of show me the options like "center", etc.
I've just updated to the last version available, anyway, this installation is very fresh (last weekend). I'm running on a ubuntu 11.04 also updated today. But this always happened to me, it never worked actually :( very frustrating.
I submitted this to android-developers mailing list and found that there is a bug (fortunately already fixed) on ADT for linux:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=18348
the solution is:
Download the ADT r14 preview available here:
http://tools.android.com/download/adt-14-preview
many other bugs, mainly on interface design layout issues were fixed lately (and many linux-specific bugs).
On the Outline window, Right click on the relative layout (lets say) tree
choose "other properties" and then "All By Name". a window should pop up for you to enter the desired action.
the only thing that worked for me in order to relate action to button in Graphic layout on eclipse
(using windows 7 X64 Build: v22.3.0- 887826)
