How do I get the Layout Validation window in Android Studio? It's usually listed under View > Tool windows. Is there a solution that helps you see your layouts displayed on different screen sizes in realtime without actually running an emulator or actual device?
As per Android Studio version 4.1.3, it's still there in
View -> Tool Windows -> Layout Validation
If you can't see it,
go to settings
search for Layout Validation
Click on KeyMap
Double click on Layout Validation
Add keyboard shortcut
As of Arctic Fox 2020.3.1, it seems to appear only if you are in the XML layout editor. It doesn't appear to work (yet) for Jetpack Compose previews.
In order that the Layout Validation window appears, you have to open some of your views (activity, fragment,...) xml layout. Then, the window should automatically appear in the upper right corner of the IDE window. See here:
https://developer.android.com/studio/debug/layout-inspector#layout-validation
If it doesn't appear, then it should be listed under View > Tool Windows

I am trying to understand the spacing of elements in an AlertDialog. The AlertDialog is created using AlertDialog.Builder and contains a custom ListView (set via setView).
When the app is being debugged on my device (over USB) I can launch the Layout Inspector in android studio and observe / study the current layout. When I launch the dialog, it appears on screen and in the layout inspector, but I cannot seem to click on it or view it's layout. Only the layout of the main app, from which the dialog was launched, is visible in the Component Tree.
FWIW, the immediate issue I am trying to solve using layout inspector is reducing the spacing between the message text, and my View, in the alert dialog.
I had the same issue. (I'm using Android Studio Arctic Fox 2020.3.1 patch 3)
Turned out the inspector by default filters out System-defined layers, and the dialog is one. There's this small button in the layout inspector, which looks like a filter.
Click it, disable the "Filter system defined layers" and another layer appears.

After:
Using Android Studio Arctic Fox on Windows 10:
Bring up the app with the dialog window showing in an emulator.
Bring up the Layout Inspector
View->Tools Window->Layout Inspector or you may have this in the lower right portion of the AS window
You should see the Layout Inspector window pop up showing two DecorViews. (You may need to select the application.)
The top DecorView is the AlertDialog window. Click down through its hierarchy to see this:
From here you can see a visualization of the layout and the associated attributes:
In my experience, the Layout Inspector can be finicky at times. If the layout doesn't appear, try closing the Layout Inspector and restarting it.
I wasn't able to get the alert dialog showing up in layout inspector, and had to use UI Automator Viewer
It's like Layout Inspector, but supports system and multi-app UIs, whereas Layout Inspector only supports single-app UIs. It feels like this UI is part of my app, but it's only showing up in UI Automator Viewer.
I want to change my code style settings in Android Studio for Windows as Shown in this Figure, So my code does not go out of device width. And show these arrows for next line as in Figure...???

I'm Using Android Studio 4.0.1 on Windows-10

Navigate to your toolbar -> View -> Active Editor -> Soft-wrap (uncheck it)
With Soft wrap (ignore gibberish text for testing):
Without Soft wrap :
Not using windows but I think view settings would be the same regardless of OS
Is there any way that I can quickly see how my view is going to look in different scales? On Xcode there is a preview feature in storyboard mode, just checking if there is anything like that but in Android Studio or even third party...
Thanks in advance, any help/suggestion/pro-tip ;) is appreciated
There is menu called "Layout validation" where you can preview all the screen on Android studio 4.0.
I assume you know to go to the xml file and open the design tab of the layout . and now you can see only single preview of the layout in device.
Then look to your top bar on the design window which contains app theme , the android version and device name. (below is a screen shot).
Now all you have to do is open the drop down which contains device names (in my screen shot Nexus 4) and go to bottom . you will see preview all screens . this will show all the screen preview.
Hope this solves your problem.
"Layout validation" tool window rely on context to be visible
Android Studio Chipmunk | 2021.2.1
in text editor mode layout validation is not visible at the very right of the ide
But if you are in design mode and working on a layout (not a path nor icon ) . Layout validation will appear in between gradle and device manager tools
Now you can work with layout validation tool window .
Multi Preview, which is like this, is a feature of Android Studio 3.6+
I am currently learning how to make Android apps, using a textbook to guide me through some basic apps. The text teaches you how to change the layout and layout properties via the "Outline" window, but it appears that the outline window is either hidden or has been replaced by the "Component Tree" window. Is there a way to bring back the Outline window?
I'm using Android Studio 1.5.1 on Windows 10.
Textbook is called "Android for Programmers: An App-Driven Approach, 2/e"
Thanks!
The outline view in old eclipse-based Android Studio versions is not a part of itellij used in modern Android Studio, and its functionality is replaced by other components.
for layouts and layout XML
The component panel in more recent Android Studio builds replaces the outline view. The properties associated with an element are shown in a tree view just below the component list when viewing a layout.
for code
Alt+7 Structure view will produce a docked window on the left side (replacing the project tree) that shows the structure of the code.
for /res/values/strings.xml specifically
Unfortunately they didn't create a resources view that works in general (that I am aware of), but the strings.xml file has a translation assistance that you can open by clicking "open editor" which does add a gui to the XML.
In Android Studio, a component tree is available in the bottom left hand corner of the Palette. I think that this is functionally equivalent to the Outline in Eclipse.
I have recently started using Android Studio and cannot work out how to access the properties window.
The following screenshot was taken from Google and shows exactly what I'm trying to access denoted by the red rectangle around the properties window.
Can anyone please tell me how I can access this?
Switch to design view. Click "Design" tab at bottom-left work area.
In the new Android Studio Version 3.1.2, the name of the Propierties Windows is "Attributes".
Look at this picture:
Attributes basic view
And, if you want to see the complete attributes, simply click on "View all attributes":

How to restore windows?:
restore windows
I had the same issue than found that the properties window was always there but I had to drag it out with my mouse. Just go to the far right vertical bar in Design mode then drag to the right when your mouse turns into horizontal arrows pointing away from each other. Hope this helps!
You can just click on the design tab on your screen (at the left bottom corner below your code text window) and just click on anything whose property you want to change
make sure you are in the '.xml' file
I accidentally deleted the properties side bar and Window-->restore deafult layout helped.
Follow the doc.
Instead of editing your view properties in XML, you can do so from the Properties window (on the right side of the Layout Editor). This window is available only when the design editor is open, so be sure you've selected the Design tab at the bottom of the window.
When you select a view, the Properties window shows the following, as indicated in figure 5:
View inspector with controls for width/height style, margins, and bias (available only for views in a ConstraintLayout). For more information, see Build a Responsive UI with ConstraintLayout.
This happens all the time, to my opinion Android team should see as an improvement opportunity, here is the solution, click on the settings (gear symbol) on the right make sure that the attached side is set to None. also -See screen shot-> 1,
You have three ways to see the fields, design mode, split mode and code mode. THE ONLY ONE THAT shows the Attribute bar is on the SPLIT MODE, click on the Attribute see screenshot->
if that does not work, you can go to Windows -> Restore default Layout
if that still does not work you can do File -> Manage IDE Settings -> Restore Default Settings.
if that still does not work you can go in file explorer and delete the .android studio folder in C\users[your user].Androidstudio#.#
Hope this helps someone out there...
