Is there a good way to add new image resources(from SD card) to a gallery widget at runtime?
"new image resources"?
Image resources are a part of /res/drawable folder inside your .apk application package. You can not add "new" image resources during runtime.
Is there some other use case you had in mind?

You have to add media files to Media Store in order to be seen by gallery widget. Use MediaScanner. I use this convenient wrapper in my code:

I am writing a media player application. I am showing all videos of my sd card in a grid view. It's working fine. If any one making changes to those videos(like rename, delete) using some other app like file expert or file manager are not not effecting my grid view. My grid still showing old names and deleted files. To resolve this i have added refresh button. In this i am using

I am trying to save an image from my application to the default gallery of my phone. The code below works perfectly if I have a SD card on the phone. The image saved appears in the phone's gallery and everything, as expected:

However, if I try to save the same image into the internal storage (for when the phone does not have a SD card), the image does not appear in the phone's gallery! To try to do that, I only change one line from the above code:
uriOfSucessfulySavedImage = c.insert(MediaStore.Images.Media.INTERNAL_CONTENT_URI, v);
The interesting thing about this, however, is that the variable uriOfSucessfulySavedImage is not null (it returns content://media/internal/images/media/x, where 'x' is a number). So, the image is being saved somewhere in the internal storage of the phone, but it is not getting displayed in the phone gallery's as when I use MediaStore.Images.Media.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI.
Does anybody have any clue what is going on? How can I save an image into the internal storage of the phone and have that image in the phone's gallery?

I forgot one important information. The File "f" in the parameters of the method "saveMediaEntry" is coming from this other method for when the SD card is mounted (that is, for the first code):

Another easy way to do it. Add this after saving your file.

I haven't tried this, but I believe you need to run the Media Scanner to scan the internal storage directory so that the gallery can see your newly saved image. Check this post here.

I don't know how to properly use classes, I tried but nothing is working.

The Story
Before Android 4.4, we could just send a broadcast to trigger the media scanner on any particular file, or folder or even on the root of the storage. But from 4.4 KitKat, this have been fixed by the Android Developers.
Why do I say fixed? The reason is simple. Sending a broadcast using MEDIA_MOUNTED on the root directory is very expensive. Running the Media Scanner is an expensive operation and the situation gets even worse when the user has got a lot of files in the storage and deep folder structures.
Before Android 4.4
Keep it straight and simple. If you are targeting your app before Android 4.4. But keep in mind not to use it on the root directory unless absolutely necessary.

From Android 4.4
There are two ways for you.
i) The first one is very similar to the previous example, but may not work efficiently and is not recommended too.

ii) Now, let us move on to the most recommended and efficient solution to this problem.
Add the file paths of the files which have been updated, like this, in a String type ArrayList

toBeScanned.add(item.getFilePath());
Now you need to run scanFile() static method of the MediaScannerConnection class and pass the String array containing the list of all the files which have been updated and needs to be media scanned.
You can also put a listener to respond when the scanning has been finished for individual files.

Hey I found out how to do it with a very simple code.
Just call this line of code:

This should trigger mediascanner.
In Android, there is a content database which is used by the media scanner to keep track of all the media content present on the device.
When Android boots up, the mediascanner service is launched and runs through the entire external storage to find if there is any new media content if it finds one then,
It adds an entry of that media content into the content database
Each entry in the content database contains metadata of the media content like Name, date, file size, type of file, etc..
So when you make a modification to a media content, you will need to update the content database also.
If the content database is not update then other applications also will not be able to access that particular media content.
Running the media scanner just updates the content database
Instead of running the media scanner, you can update the content database yourself and it should resolve the problem.
Here is an explanation on how to insert, delete, update using the content resolver. (Search for the section "Inserting, Updating, and Deleting Data")

As #Aritra Roy's answer, i decide to make an experiment about this issue.
What i got here are:
Intent.ACTION_MEDIA_MOUNTED and Intent.ACTION_MEDIA_SCANNER_SCAN_FILE
can accept individual file path, so sendBroadcast(new
Intent(Intent.ACTION_MEDIA_SCANNER_SCAN_FILE, Uri.parse(filePath)));
or sendBroadcast(new Intent(Intent.ACTION_MEDIA_MOUNTED,
Uri.parse(filePath))); will be valid.
If you use individual file path with Intent.ACTION_MEDIA_MOUNTED on Kitkat or above, your application will still crash
If you use Intent.ACTION_MEDIA_SCANNER_SCAN_FILE or MediaScannerConnection on device lower than Kitkat, your application will not force close, but the method will just simply not working as you want.
From that experiment, i think the best method to handle is

In my app I have two buttons play and download. In the downlod button I download video from internet and store in SD card, i will play video from the SD card when press play button.
Video is successfully downloaded and stored in SD card. If I press play button, I will list videos from SD card(in logcat) and play the downloaded video. It does not show the downloaded video name, but if I open the SD card from my system the downloaded video is stored in SD card. i do not know where i am wrong.

Media Scanner needs to rescan the storage in order to show the image in the Gallery.
Look for the MediaScannerConnection API to make it happen.
MediaScannerConnection provides a way for applications to pass a newly created or downloaded media file to the media scanner service. The media scanner service will read metadata from the file and add the file to the media content provider. The MediaScannerConnectionClient provides an interface for the media scanner service to return the Uri for a newly scanned file to the client of the MediaScannerConnection class.
you can add the image to mediadb through code without invoking the mediascanner but without the absolute path of the new image the image cannot be displayed.
You have to add
values.put(MediaStore.Images.Media.DATA, "/absolute/path/to/image.jpg");
Invoking the media scanner is the more complete way because the media scanner also sets the oter fields (date, with, height, .....)
warning: If you are using android before version 4.4 invoking the media scanner always starts scanning the complete device which may take some time (45 minutes on my android-4.2 tablet with 16000 photos)
