Okay I have a full week of frustration behind me, it is the third time that the layout behaves random.
For example:
<TextView
android:id="#+id/tvGebiedHead"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginLeft="18dp"
android:layout_marginTop="16dp"
android:text="Geef gebied op"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge" />
<ListView
android:id="#+id/lvGebieden"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_alignLeft="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_below="#+id/textView1" >
</ListView>
produces a result where the listview is displayed on top of the textview (making both items unreadable). The code down here produces the desired result, the listview is rendered under the textview. It is not the eclipse graphical editor, but it happens on a real phone as well. Note that the only difference between the two snippets is the id of the TextView.
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:id="#+id/RelativeLayout1"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginLeft="18dp"
android:layout_marginTop="16dp"
android:text="Geef gebied op"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge" />
<ListView
android:id="#+id/lvGebieden"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_alignLeft="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_below="#+id/textView1" >
</ListView>
Earlier this week I had a fight with the layout of four togglebuttons which (all!!) changed size, text align on the button, and even location when I clicked one, while the on and off text was exactly the same. Please tell me I am doing something wrong and android is not broken.
In the example on the top, your ListView's layout_below still refers to #id/textView1 which doesn't exist. It does, however, in your example at the bottom, so the bottom is working. FYI, instead of #+id/textView1 you should use #id\textView1 in the layout_below.

First the title may look senseless but I don't know how I describe my problem well in the title.
I have a Relative layout which has 2 buttons (Past games and Upcoming Games) and 2 listviews. Whenever a button is pressed the associated listview is collapsed (height will be zero) if it is already expanded or the reverse will happen. ( i used this solution)
Problem:
Everything is fine when I run it on a 5-inch screen phone. Please see the following picture:
[![][2]][2]
But if I run it on a 10-inch tablet it looks like this:
[![][3]][3]
The same will happen when it will run on less than 5-inch phone.
My questions
Do I need to make another layout for the tablet? like in the layout-large folder?
or I can use some event(s) in Jave file that dynamically set the buttons align parent bottom property when the listview is not collapsed.
or it can be fixed in my current XML
Below is the code for that part I am asking for help
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"

If you guys can give me some advice on making the user interface that will run on all screen sizes and densities I will be very thankful
Thanks to anyone who will help me
You are trying to workaround functionality of ExpandableListView. Look at the following page:
http://www.androidhive.info/2013/07/android-expandable-list-view-tutorial/
I've got an activity layout specified in an XML file - activity_intro.xml - and I'm trying to create another one that is similar but slightly different - that's going to be activity_instructions.xml.
The Intro activity has a 9patch image at the bottom of the screen that is supposed to stay there and only adjust to different widths of the screens.
The Instructions activity is supposed to contain the same image but above 2 more buttons - all three of these views need to be always located at the bottom of the screen.
activity_intro.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ScrollView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:background="#drawable/home_background" >
<LinearLayout
style="#style/Activity"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/introAnimationImageView"
android:layout_width="152dip"
android:layout_height="176dip"
android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal"
android:contentDescription="#string/intro_animation_content_description"
android:src="#drawable/animation_intro01" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/introTextViewTitle"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/intro_title"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/introTextViewSubtitle"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/intro_subtitle"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceMedium" />
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
<Button
android:id="#+id/introButtonLoginSignup"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:text="#string/intro_button_label_login_signup" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/introButtonInstructions"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_alignRight="#+id/introButtonLoginSignup"
android:text="#string/intro_button_label_instructions" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/introButtonReportAnonymously"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_below="#+id/introButtonLoginSignup"
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true"
android:text="#string/intro_button_label_report_anonymously" />
</RelativeLayout>
</LinearLayout>
</ScrollView>
<ImageView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="0"
android:contentDescription="#null"
android:scaleType="fitXY"
android:src="#drawable/footer_cityscape" />
</LinearLayout>
Result:
Since I've got working code for Intro, I wanted to make Instructions follow its example but the layout_weight property isn't behaving as expected. First of all, I was only trying to put in the 2 buttons and leave out the image:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ScrollView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_weight="0.1"
android:background="#drawable/home_background" >
<LinearLayout
style="#style/Activity"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/instructionsTextViewTitle"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:gravity="center"
android:text="#string/instructions_title_1"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceMedium"
android:textStyle="bold" />
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/instructionsImageView"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:contentDescription="#string/instructions_image_content_description"
android:src="#drawable/forms" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/instructionsTextViewDescription"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/instructions_description_1"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceMedium" />
</LinearLayout>
</ScrollView>
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1" >
<Button
android:id="#+id/instructionsButtonPrevious"
style="#style/ButtonPrevious"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:text="#string/instructions_button_label_previous" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/instructionsButtonNext"
style="#style/ButtonNext"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:text="#string/instructions_button_label_next" />
</RelativeLayout>
</LinearLayout>
This only worked when I set the layout_weight of the bottom RelativeLayout to 1 (instead of 0) and for the ScrollView 0.1 (instead of 1). If I used the original values the RelativeLayout would take up all the screen. Could anyone explain to me why that is?
I also tried googling the issue and noticed people would suggest to set layout_height to 0dip which I tried but it also didn't work as expected.
Secondly, I tried adding the already mentioned ImageView to the bottom RelativeLayout. This, however, basically displays only the ImageView and not the buttons - or one of the buttons is on top of the image (hiding it). Why is that? Don't I specifically set the buttons to be placed below it?
What should the code look like in order for it to be doing what I expect it?
Further explanation:
Below are images that should help indicate what exactly I want to achieve. The green bits are the ScrollViews - I added them because Android devices tend to have diverse screen sizes. Their purpose is to present the content properly independently of the screen size, i.e. if the screen is small, the user will be able to scroll that part to read the entire text and view the image.
The red bit on the left (Intro) shows the ImageView that is supposed to always be at the bottom of the screen; it'll always be there, visible, and it's the green bit above it that will be movable.
If you take a look at the red bit on the right (Instructions), there's a Next button that's covering the image with the lorry/truck that was visible in the Intro screenshot. Now that's wrong - there should be 2 buttons BELOW the image, as seen on the last screenshot (the 2 blue rectangles).
I'm working on a ListView where each item has an image and some text. On my older phone, HTC Evo 4G, things came up exactly as expected. Image is nicely sized and text looks fine. Then I loaded the same app on my new phone, HTC One, and the images are so tiny they are useless. I know the HTC One has a significantly higher resolution, but I cannot figure out how to make each item in the ListView larger.
I'm not sure what to post, but I think the layout xml files are the issue.
Here's activity_main.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<LinearLayout android:id="#+id/LinearLayout01"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:orientation="horizontal"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:gravity="center_horizontal"
android:layout_marginTop="2dip" android:background="#669900">
<!--
Use layout_weight to stretch the EditText and compress the button.
To avoid text wrap, the editable text is forced to occupy only one
line
-->
<EditText android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:typeface="normal"
android:layout_weight="1" android:lines="1" android:ellipsize="middle"
android:hint="#string/hint" android:id="#+id/search_key" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:maxLines="1"></EditText>
<ImageButton android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:src="#drawable/ic_menu_search" android:adjustViewBounds="true"
android:layout_weight="0" android:id="#+id/btn_ok" android:layout_height="wrap_content"></ImageButton>
</LinearLayout>
<TextView android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="#+id/tweet_header"
android:gravity="right" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:paddingRight="4dp"
android:background="#99cc33" android:textColor="#000000" android:textSize="21dp"></TextView>
<ListView android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="#+id/tweet_list"></ListView>
</LinearLayout>
And the ListView is made up of this item.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/itemImage"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginLeft="15dp"
android:scaleType="fitCenter"
android:src="#drawable/ic_launcher" />
<TextView
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/created_at"
android:text="now"
android:textSize="10sp"
android:layout_below="#id/itemImage"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:textStyle="italic"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"></TextView>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/itemURL"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:text="itemURL"
android:visibility="invisible" />
</RelativeLayout>
So the app does this: It taps ebay for car data and presents the search results as line 1 with a picture, line 2 with the ebay item title. A hidden value is the URL so users can tap the ListView line and launch a web browser.
Looks like the wrap_content setting for the ImageView's layout_width and layout_height are the issue. When I switched that to numerical values, suddenly I saw it change size. Finally setting it to 100dp made the images viewable.
As an aside, I had a terrible time with ADS and the emulator. It consistently failed to re-load my updated app. Often complaining about the Package Manager and suggesting the some process was running. I little idea what was running and how to fix it. When I switched to loading the app straight to the phone, then it worked fine.
So, I think now I need to create a system that is proportional, and takes in to consideration the displaying devices resolution.
Problem is the Relative Layout width being wrap_content. Try changing that to match parent. then you would not have to go thru this ordeal
I have a rather simple ListView row:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="horizontal" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/tournament_name"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:textSize="25dp" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/tournament_winner"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:textSize="25dp" />
</RelativeLayout>
When the text of "#+id/tournament_name"is long - it overlaps with the one from "#+id/tournament_winner" and I don't understand why.
I tried using android:singleLine="false"to no avail. I also tried using android:inputType="textMultiLine"as the docu says android:singleLine="false" is deprecated but then I get the warning: Attribute android:inputType should not be used with <TextView>: Change element type to
<EditText> ? so no good here as well.
I also tried using android:ellipsize="end" but this doesn't work. I assume it is because the text in the left TextView ("#+id/tournament_name") is NOT long enough to fill up the full width of the ListView (which code is not sowing here).
I was sure that if I use android:layout_width="wrap_content"the two TextView fields shouldn't overlap.
Here is an example (see the second line):
Any further ideas how this could be fixed?
android:layout_toLeftOf="#id/tournament_winner" in First TextView.
Also set android:maxLines="1" and Fix width for tournament winner because when it gets long tournament name cant see...
row.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="horizontal" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/tournament_name"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#id/tournament_winner"
android:maxLines="1"
android:text="NAMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"
android:textSize="25dp" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/tournament_winner"
android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_marginLeft="10dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:text="WINER"
android:textSize="25dp" />
</RelativeLayout>
Thank you very much for your answer - sorry it took me some time to respond. I ended up using your android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/tournament_winner" but left the single line and the margin to the left unused, as the result seemed perfect to me (hope this is also the case for other devices).
One thing though - in the first text view (tournament_name) I had to use android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/tournament_winner"and not android:layout_toLeftOf="#id/tournament_winner" - pay attention to the added +. For some reason I get an error using android:layout_toLeftOf="#id/tournament_winner": Error: No resource found that matches the given name... so it seems that it is possible and NEEDED to define the resource in the time of calling it because the system doesn't know it before it was defined.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="horizontal" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/tournament_name"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/tournament_winner"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:textSize="25dp" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/tournament_winner"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:textSize="25dp" />
</RelativeLayout>
You can use single text view in place of two and simply display both strings in one text view !!
My project was working fine, when suddenly the text on my buttons was being displayed vertically. By which I mean instead of map_infobutton displaying
Info
it was displaying
I
n
with the f and o beyond the bounds of the button, even though I have specified height=wrap_content in the TableLayout containing the buttons.
It appears fine in the Layout tab in eclipse, and only appears vertical in the emulator (not tried on target hardware)
getPaddingLeft for one of the buttons returns 11 at various points in the code. Not sure where it gets that from, but the spacing looks bigger than that anyway. I did have three buttons and took one away, but the problem existed with both two and three buttons.
My layout is:

Any ideas? Also if you have any comments on how I'm creating the layout, as I'm new to this and it seems like there are a lot of options available, but I'm trying to make it as simple as possible.
I had a similar problem.
I see that you have multiple buttons that you want to have the same width, so you specify the button's width as "0px" and the weight as "1". This is exactly what I did.
When I set the button text within the XML file, things look fine. However, I have one button that changes is text depending on whether a process is running or not. In my case, it is similar to the situation where a button toggles from "Start..." to "Stop..." After the text changes, it prints vertically and only the top one or two letters of each button are shown.
After reading your post, it occurred to me that, perhaps, the text was being set before the button width had been determined, and then not updated once the button width changes according to the "weight".
I modified it such that in each button, it now reads:
android:layout_width="fill_parent" instead of "0px"
In theory, this should have the same effect. However, in practice, the button width is adjusted before the text is updated. The behaviour is now correct.
