I'm struggling with getting a ListView to be able to scroll. As far as I have read it should be OK to have a ListView inside of a LinearLayout so why is it not scrolling?
This is the layout
<FrameLayout
android:id="#android:id/tabcontent"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/tab2"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
<ListView
android:id="#+id/listView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
</ListView>
</LinearLayout>
<include layout="#layout/tab3" />
<include layout="#layout/tab1" />
</FrameLayout>
And here is where I fill it up with stuff..
File folder = new File(Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory().getPath()+"/Download/");
File[] listOfFiles = folder.listFiles();
ArrayAdapter<String> arrayadp = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.list_files);
for (File file : listOfFiles) {
if (file.isFile()) {
String extension = "";
String filename = file.getName();
int i = filename.lastIndexOf('.');
if (i > 0) {
extension = filename.substring(i+1);
}
if(extension.equalsIgnoreCase("wav")){
arrayadp.add(filename);
}
}
}
ListView listView = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.listView1);
listView.setAdapter(arrayadp);
The orientation attribute is necessary for a LinearLayout. You'll need to set this to either horizontal or vertical, even if the LinearLayout only has one child. I think this may be the cause of your issue; I've forgotten orientation many times and it can cause many weird problems with how your Views are displayed and behave. You may also want to consider not using a FrameLayout as your root view here, as having a FrameLayout with multiple children can make it very difficult to get them laid out properly. Consider a LinearLayout if you want your three children in a horizontal or vertical row.
it is ok to put a listview in a linearLayout.
it is not ok to set the height of the listView to be wrap_content, as listView contains a lot of items, all have dynamic size and number.
google has talked about this on this lecture . please watch it all. it might help you with other things too.
This problem because your root layout is a FrameLayout.
Insert linearlayout how root
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<FrameLayout
android:id="#android:id/tabcontent"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/tab2"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
<ListView
android:id="#+id/listView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
</ListView>
</LinearLayout>
<include layout="#layout/tab3" />
<include layout="#layout/tab1" />
</FrameLayout>
</LinearLayout>

I have a ListView with 2 footer views. The first one is a bunch of TextViews, while the second one is a button. I'm trying to fix the second footer so that it always shows at the bottom of the screen.
I tried the following:
1. alignParentBottom = true
2. layout_gravity="bottom"
3. footerView2.bringToFront()
And combinations of the above. But none of them worked out. How can I achieve this?
UPDATE
I shouldn't have added the View which I always want on the screen (fixed) as footer.
I just added the wannabe-fixed-view with the listView. Did alignParentBottom = true and also view.bringToFront(). It worked out for me.
Separate your ListView and bottom footer. The idea is:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<Button
android:id="#+id/btn_bottom"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:text="Bottom button"/>
<ListView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_above="#id/btn_bottom"/>
</RelativeLayout>
Create separate xml file which contain all textviews and button you want as footer part.Then bind this xml as a footer of listview. You can binf footer with listview by this method: listview.addFooterView(footerView);
For example:
View footerView = ((LayoutInflater) getSystemService(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE))
.inflate(R.layout.listviewfooter, null, false);
spDate = (Spinner) headerView.findViewById(R.id.spdate);
llDatepicker = (LinearLayout) headerView.findViewById(R.id.lldatepicker);
rvDatepicker = (RecyclerView) headerView.findViewById(R.id.rvdatepicker);
rvTimepicker = (RecyclerView) headerView.findViewById(R.id.rvtimepicker);
lvAddress.addFooterView(footerView);
If you are Trying to add a View which will be shown even if we scroll the List Up or Down... u can do something like this. I had done this before But as a header.
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:id="#+id/new_container"
android:background="#color/white"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<Button
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="LOAD EARLIER MESSAGES"
android:id="#+id/loadMore"
android:background="#90F58220"
android:visibility="visible"/>
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:id="#+id/listContainer"
android:layout_below="#+id/loadMore"
android:layout_above="#+id/container">
<ListView
android:id="#+id/messagesContainer"
android:transcriptMode="normal"
android:dividerHeight="0dp"
android:divider="#null"
android:stackFromBottom="true"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" />
</RelativeLayout>
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/container"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:background="#ffffff"
android:paddingTop="10dp"
android:paddingBottom="10dp"
android:paddingLeft="0dp"
android:paddingRight="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
</RelativeLayout>
The LoadMore Button is always visible on the Top of the List...
To add it to footer, Just Change
android:layout_below="#+id/loadMore"
android:layout_above="#+id/container"
to
android:layout_above="#+id/loadMore"
XML (variant 1) - text WORD WRAP OFF:
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<HorizontalScrollView
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_width="wrap_content">
<EditText
android:inputType="textMultiLine|textNoSuggestions"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_width="match_parent"/>
</HorizontalScrollView>
</LinearLayout>
How remove HorizontalScrollView programmaticaly, after that XML should be, like :
XML (variant 2) - TEXT WORD WRAP ON
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<EditText
android:inputType="textMultiLine|textNoSuggestions"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_width="match_parent"/>
</LinearLayout>
What the appropriate way for do this:
Maybe use dynamic fragment ? Maybe use View.removeView ?
Or....
Please help...
This code should remove the scroll view and put the item in it's place (For this to work be sure to add the id's to the view elements on the xml).
View bodyLayout = (View)m_dialog.findViewById(R.id.my_item);
ScrollView scroller = (ScrollView)m_dialog.findViewById(R.id.my_scroll);
ViewGroup topLayout = (ViewGroup)scroller.getParent();
ViewGroup.LayoutParams params = scroller.getLayoutParams();
int index = topLayout.indexOfChild(scroller);
scroller.removeAllViews();
topLayout.removeView(scroller);
topLayout.addView(bodyLayout, index, params);
I can't seem to find a way to make a layout that contains a ListView that show the entire list of my contacts (its a long list), with 2 buttons one next to the other below the list.
its freaking me out, nothing i do seems to work. i searched some related quiestions and found this one: Android Layout with ListView and Buttons
but none of the alternative solutions over there is working for me.
when i look at the graphical presntation (of eclipse) it looks fine, but when i run it on my device i can only see the list of contacts. the listView overlaps the buttons.
I am using a simpleList that render on another layout that represent a row. i'm starting to suspect something i do programtically ruins it, because i ran over my java code and found no mention of the activity_contact_list that i was talking about. only connection to the row layout.
so i got this activity_contact_list.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/contact_list"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ListView
android:id="#+id/list"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true" >
</ListView>
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/buttons"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_weight="1.0"
android:orientation="horizontal" >
<Button
android:id="#+id/action_cancel"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="Cancle" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/action_add"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="Add" />
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
this is after many tries such as: using RelativeLayout instead of the LinearLayout, puting the ListView's code below the LinearLayout of the buttons, and many more..
and here is the code of the activity: ContactList.java:
public class ContactList extends ListActivity{
//some global variables for late use.
public Model model;
SimpleAdapter adapter;
List<Map<String, String>> data; /* data is a list of Map */
String[] from = {"name","phone"}; /* names of the columns */ //TODO - add date!
int[] to = {R.id.name, R.id.number};
List<Contact> contacts; /* list of contacts */
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
// setContentView(R.layout.activity_contact_list);
// Set up the action bar.
final ActionBar actionBar = getActionBar();
actionBar.setNavigationMode(ActionBar.NAVIGATION_MODE_STANDARD);
actionBar.setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
model = Model.getInstance(this);
data = new ArrayList<Map<String, String>>();
contacts = fillContactsList();
fill_data();
adapter = new SimpleAdapter(this, data, R.layout.contact_list_row, from, to);
setListAdapter(adapter);
}
i commented the setContentView line cause it doesnt compile otherway...
As is said. the list works perfactly. but it overlaps the buttons at the bottom of the activity. any idea? i'm sure its something silly i'm missing..
thanks in advance!
Did you try to use Relative Layout ?
Change Linear Layout to Relative Layout that's all.
As Linear Layout Doesn't support align parent..
Edited
set List Height to mach parent.
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/contact_list"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ListView
android:id="#+id/list"
android:layout_below="#+id/buttons"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" >
</ListView>
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/buttons"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:weightSum="2" >
<Button
android:id="#+id/action_cancel"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="Cancle" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/action_add"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="Add" />
</LinearLayout>
How long is your ListView. Maybe it is longer than your screen and is the LinearLayout with buttons shown outside your screen.
What happens when you rearrange with the buttons above the ListView.
EDIT:
I think you have to set a Max-size in your ListView. Maybe you can try something like this in your java-code, but I don't know if it is scrollable then...
ListView listView = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.listView):
LinearLayout.LayoutParams params = (LinearLayout.LayoutParams) listView .getLayoutParams();
params.height = 200; // or something bigger / smaller
listView .setLayoutParams(params);
I have an activity with the associated activity.xml code:
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:background="#drawable/pattern_background"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ScrollView
android:id="#+id/scrollView"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="0dp"
android:layout_marginBottom="5dp"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:clickable="false" >
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical" >
...
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/llComments"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="TextView" />
</LinearLayout>
</ScrollView>
<include
android:id="#+id/layoutComments"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
layout="#layout/widget_comentarios_fragment" >
</include>
In the LinearLayout with id llComments I introduce a fragment called CommentsFragment dynamically from the activity with the following code:
private Fragment commentsFragment;
private FragmentTransaction ft;
...
llComentarios = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.llComments);
...
Bundle args = new Bundle();
args.putString(Constants.IDMODEL, getId());
commentsFragment = CommentsFragment.newInstance(args);
ft = getSupportFragmentManager().beginTransaction();
ft.add(R.id.llComments, commentsFragment).commit();
The Fragment associated xml file is:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
<ListView
android:id="#+id/comments"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:divider="#color/transparent"
android:dividerHeight="10dp"
android:paddingLeft="#dimen/indicator_internal_padding"
android:paddingRight="#dimen/indicator_internal_padding" />
</LinearLayout>
The problem I cannot solve is to show in the activity more than one item (in fact I am showing one and a third items) in the list if I do not fix a height for the listview.It should adapt to as many items I add to the list in the fragment through the adapter. I have tried different combinations of heights in the layouts and views, but still does not work. Maybe I am annulating one with other.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
After some days I find out the exact problem. I was including a ListView into a ScrollView, and that's clearly not recomended by Android developers.
You can look for further info here: Why ListView cannot be used in a ScrollView?
Anyway, if you want to do it, you can do that with a hack. Take a look at these proposals:
How can I put a ListView into a ScrollView without it collapsing?
For me that worked. Problem solved.
I have implemented a ListView in my application using a custom implementation of CursorAdapter. My problem is, that whenever I fling to scroll quickly to the bottom of the list (right after launching the application), I sometimes end up with all the ListView items drawn overlapping each other. If I scroll back up or touch one of the items, they become properly arranged.
Here is how it looks after I quickly scroll down :
http://i.stack.imgur.com/cTcfD.png
Here is how it looks when I am select-ing one of the items :
http://i.stack.imgur.com/ZTRSt.png
Here is the XML for my ListView :
<ListView
android:id="#+id/all_reminders_list"
android:paddingLeft="4dp"
android:paddingRight="4dp"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:clickable="true"
android:dividerHeight="1.0sp"
android:animateLayoutChanges="true">
Here's the newView(..) method of my custom CursorAdapter :
public View newView(Context context, Cursor cursor, ViewGroup parent) {
LayoutInflater inflater = LayoutInflater.from(parent.getContext());
View view = inflater.inflate(R.layout.view_list_item, parent, false);
return view;
}
And this is the bindView(..) method :
public void bindView(View view, Context context, Cursor cursor) {
TextView whatTextView = (TextView) view.findViewById(R.id.item_what_text);
whatTextView.setText(cursor.getString(1));
TextView whenTextView = (TextView) view.findViewById(R.id.item_when_text);
if(cursor.getInt(9) != 0) // DONE_FLAG = 1 (completed)
{
//Arrow visibility
ImageView arrow = (ImageView)view.findViewById(R.id.list_item_arrow);
arrow.setVisibility(View.INVISIBLE);
//Text color
whatTextView.setTextColor(Color.LTGRAY);
whenTextView.setTextColor(Color.LTGRAY);
//WHEN text
whenTextView.setText(TimeCalculationHelper.getCompletedTimeString(cursor.getLong(2)));
}
else // DONE_FLAG = 0
{
//Arrow visibility
ImageView arrow = (ImageView)view.findViewById(R.id.list_item_arrow);
arrow.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);
//Text color
whatTextView.setTextColor(Color.BLACK);
whenTextView.setTextColor(Color.BLACK);
//WHEN text
whenTextView.setText(TimeCalculationHelper.getTimeRemainingString(cursor.getLong(2)));
}
}
I've also noticed that I have been able to replicate it only when my device (Galaxy S2) is in power saving mode. Is there something I should be doing differently here? Thanks in advance!
EDIT : Including the list item's layout
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:paddingLeft="2dp">
<TextView android:id="#+id/item_what_text"
android:lines="1"
android:maxLines="2"
android:textSize="22dp"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:paddingTop="3dp"/>
<TextView android:id="#+id/item_when_text"
android:lines="1"
android:maxLines="1"
android:textSize="14dp"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="13 minutes"
android:paddingBottom="2dp"
android:layout_below="#+id/item_what_text"/>
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/list_item_arrow"
android:src="#drawable/next"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"/>
</RelativeLayout>
I also faced the same problem, with List items in my ListView overlapping each other whilst scrolling.
My fix:
I just specified a background for the parent layout that contained the ListView in question. Previously it was transparent.
I had the same problem and found it was caused by setting the animateLayoutChanges attribute to true on the listview.
Unfortunately I lose the animation of the listview by removing it but at least it draws properly when scrolling fast.
Giving the parent layout a background also appears to fix the issue, as mentioned by Pavan. Will experiment and change my answer if I discover issues with the background change.
For solving this ,i have one more solution:
I faced problem by using this layout:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/root"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
>
<ListView
android:id="#+id/list"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:scrollbars="none"
android:paddingTop="4dip"
android:dividerHeight="0dp"
android:divider="#null"
android:cacheColorHint="#00000000"
android:listSelector="#color/transprent_editbox"
android:focusableInTouchMode="false" />
</RelativeLayout>
In order to solve that Problem,i just did few modifications on Above layout,those are:
1)Changed top layout from Relative to Linear Layout.
2)Put my ListView in other Relative Layout ..
i did like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/root"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ListView
android:id="#+id/list"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:scrollbars="none"
android:paddingTop="4dip"
android:dividerHeight="0dp"
android:divider="#null"
android:cacheColorHint="#00000000"
android:listSelector="#color/transprent_editbox"
android:focusableInTouchMode="false" />
</RelativeLayout>
</LinearLayout>
After using this,my problem is solved.
1.
in my opinion, height is wrap_content
because listview is restore row
2.
other opinion is write this code android:cacheColorHint="#00000000" in ListView
I also faced the same problem and found that animateLayoutChanges attribute causing the problems.
So i changed
android:animateLayoutChanges="true"
to
android:animateLayoutChanges="false"
and it worked.
