In my Android App I have added components for the arabic version like this:
In the styles.xml I defined:

When I launch the emulator (with arabic locale) the text alignment is correct but all the styles are set to default. No Image is displaying and it's just the standard gray bar.
The only difference in the values/styles.xml is the gravity "left". The other files have been copied.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
It appears that I copied too many styles over to the "ar" directory. When I removed all the styles except the one in my code sample it used the Holo Theme again.

I am using the material components theming for our app. Now we want a custom font, which I managed to apply almost everywhere with the theme below, which uses the various textAppearance... attributes defined by material components.
This works very well, and the theme is also applied to the AlertDialogs almost everywhere -- message text and buttons have the custom font, buttons have the correct accent colors etc.
Only the dialog title keeps the Roboto font, no matter what.

#color/colorPrimary

#color/colorPrimaryDark

#color/colorAccent

#color/textColorPrimary

#color/textColorSecondary

#style/TextAppearance.App.Button

#style/TextAppearance.App.Button

#style/TextAppearance.App.Button

#style/TextAppearance.App.Button

#style/TextAppearance.App.Button

#style/TextAppearance.App.Button

#style/TextAppearance.App.Subtitle1

#style/TextAppearance.App.Subtitle2

#style/TextAppearance.App.Body2

#style/TextAppearance.App.Button

#style/TextAppearance.App.Large

#style/TextAppearance.App.Medium

#style/TextAppearance.App.Small

...
I tried to define an extra theme for the alert dialogs like so:

But that resets the colors and fonts everywhere. The only thing that is applied, is the textSize.
It really shouldn't be so hard to achieve this, but I am out of ideas right now. I could apply the font programmatically, but that would be quite ugly.
As you mentioned the AlertDialog created by MaterialAlertDialogBuilder uses the style defined by the textAppearanceSubtitle1 attribute in your app theme.
Otherwise you can change the style used by the AlertDialog using something like:
new MaterialAlertDialogBuilder(MainActivity.this,
R.style.MyTitle_ThemeOverlay_MaterialComponents_MaterialAlertDialog)
.setTitle("Title")
.setMessage("Message......")
.setPositiveButton("ok", null)
.setNegativeButton("Cancel", null)
.show();
In your style you have to customize the materialAlertDialogTitleTextStyle attribute:

Thanks to your question I realized that I was using the incorrect attribute to assign the title style (android:titleTextAppearance instead of android:windowTitleStyle).
It looks like your issue has been fixed in the meantime, as your exact code seems to work for me as of today.
I building an application that uses ActionBarSherlock. I won't use ActionbarCompat so please focus on my question.
I made some code that can change the title color, as well as the subtitle color on the ActionBar. However when using my styles.xml for v21+ it will override those colors with the stock white colors (provided in Theme.Material)
Now I want to ask; what do I have to change in my code below to actually remove the Theme.Material colors override?
-EDIT
I noticed that it is working only when using a TextView in the Actionbar, however that's not what I want.

</resources>
I will try my best to explain and will concentrate on:

#color/my_green

#color/my_forest

#color/my_soil

These attributes are regularly available with API level 21. In general you use attributes with the "android" prefix.
If you define all your styles in the styles.xml of your values folder and if you are using app compat, then you need both.
Without the prefix the attributes applies for pre L devices. i.e. App Compat. To get it work for L devices and higher you need to specifiy the attribute again with the "android" prefix.
And to get the other Android styles you can step into them, like you step into classes and the implementations. For Mac I press the command button and then click with the mouse on the specific style.
I am using ActionBarSherlock 4.0.2.
I need a fully transparent action bar (without the neon color bottom divider). Hence, I have the following style:

By using above code, I will still have the following effect.
In order to disable the background, I put the following code in SherlockFragmentActivity#onCreate. Then the problem gone.
getSupportActionBar().setBackgroundDrawable(null);
However, I would like to see the solution being implemented in styles.xml instead of Java code, as I have many other devices with different screen configuration. I modified the styles.xml to the following, without using the previously mentioned fix in the Java code.

However, the neon divider still visible. It seems that my fix using android:background and background does not work. Am I missing something?

I am currently making an app (Android 1.6) that can change between two different themes.
I made a custom theme that takes the Android light theme as a parent!
The trouble is that when I switch to white theme my text is not drawn but if I select something I can see the text. Furthermore when I switch themes my titleText, previous and next are the same as in my dark theme.
Here is the code I use for the theme:

</resources>
This is my style:

I use two more resources that are in my res/drawable folder. Everything works fine in the standard theme, but as soon as I switch to my light theme my text disappears.
Is there something that I'm doing wrong?
From your code snippet above you're setting both background and text to the same color i.e. "color/text_color_dark", these should be different.

#color/text_color_dark

#color/text_color_dark
