How to Send AT commands to Android phone? - android

I have 2 android phones connected with each other via Bluetooth and am able to communicate between them using the BluetoothChat example (using the input/output stream)
I am also able to make a Bluetooth connection between these phones using the HandsFreeProfile by using the following UUID for connection:

Now I want to send AT commands to one phone(Phone-B) from the other(Phone-A). I can send the command from phone-A to phone-B as String (using input/output streams) and receive it by the phone-B, but I do NOT know how to apply the incoming AT command on phone-B i.e. I don't know how to make phone-B do what AT command wants it to do.
I have read about the intent
android.bluetooth.BluetoothHeadset.ACTION_VENDOR_SPECIFIC_HEADSET_EVENT
but I'm not sure how to use this to send AT commands to the phone coz to use the intent some EXTRAS and a CATEGORY needs to be sent and I'm not sure what to send in those. For example below is the excerpt from the android website for the above intent:
*This intent will have 4 extras and 1 category.
EXTRA_DEVICE - The remote Bluetooth Device
EXTRA_VENDOR_SPECIFIC_HEADSET_EVENT_CMD - The vendor specific command
EXTRA_VENDOR_SPECIFIC_HEADSET_EVENT_CMD_TYPE - The AT command type
which can be one of AT_CMD_TYPE_READ, AT_CMD_TYPE_TEST, or
AT_CMD_TYPE_SET, AT_CMD_TYPE_BASIC,AT_CMD_TYPE_ACTION.
EXTRA_VENDOR_SPECIFIC_HEADSET_EVENT_ARGS - Command arguments.*
I'll really appreciate if someone can help me out and tell me :
Can AT commands be reliably sent between 2 android phones in this way
Post some code to demonstrate how to do this?

data from android studio to matlab via bluetooth

I am new to android studios and I have the task to develop an app which transfers data from an app (Acceleration sensor data - i have created this app already which shows the data) to matlab (on the pc).
I don't really know how I should do this. I've experimented a bit with bluetooth apps, but I don't have a clue how to connect to Matlab.

Unfortunately I can not speak to the android side of things, but MatLab can connect to generic devices with the UART interface, which is fairly low level.
The process with some microprocessors that I am using is to connect the device to the PC, and then note the Outgoing com port.
(In windows 10, these can be found in Bluetooth settings -> More Bluetooth options)
Then you can use

to open an connection. The critical command is serial, the other parameters depend on your device/ configuration. Sometimes there can be issues, in which case one options is to build a loop that tries again until it works.
You then collect the data sent via UART via
flushinput(serials);
temp = fscanf(serials,'%s');
and then split the string. If data is sent continuously, you wrap this into a while loop.
After you are done, you can clean up via
fclose(s{i});
delete(instrfind)
instrreset
It should be noted, that establishing a connection takes longer, the more enabled COM ports there are. So it might be worth disabling all those you don't need.

Bluetooth SPP: Bluetooth SPP Pro (Android) vs. Microchip SmartData (iOS)

I am attempting to communicate, over an SPP profile, with an RN4678 Bluetooth chip connected to a microcontroller.
I never have a problem with the Android app. I can always pair (if not paired), connect, send messages to the chip, and disconnect. An example session is below:

With the iOS app, I can always pair (if not paired), connect, and disconnect. However, if I cannot send a message to the chip. An example session is below:

The funny thing is that if I first connect/disconnect using the Android, and then I connect using the iPhone/iPad, reception is successful !!!!

As far as I know, that path for the processing is the same ... In other words:
if(msg equals "RFCOMM_OPEN" or msg equals "LSECURED")

I, therefore, kindly ask the following:
1 - Have you encountered anything similar? Do you have any hints? What could the Android App possibly do that the iPhone app is not doing? What am I overlooking or not understanding?
2 - Are you aware of an app that works for both iOS and Android? What I mean, designed by the SAME guy/company?
If you need more info, please ask. I simply did not want to be too 'verbose'.

All,
At my job we have been playing with two RN modules: the RN4677 (we started with this module) and the RN4678.
The module allows the user to enter (and exit) a command mode. The RN4677 allows bidirectional communication with a manager while still in command mode. The RN4678 does NOT allow bidirectional communication with a manager while still in command mode.
All I needed to do was exit command mode (by issuing the command '---\r'). Now both modules work with Windows/Android/iOS ...
To summarize:
command "$$$\r" to enter command mode
various commands, requests for settings, ...
command "---\r" to exit command mode (a must for RN4678)
Everything will now work fine for both modules
I must say ... that was painful to troubleshoot ...

Getting Raspberry pi events from android/iOS app

I just got started with Raspberry pi and I wanted to make a program on my Raspberry which gets input from an app on my Android/iOS device over bluetooth. I wanted to first check if something like this is possible and second if you have any clues on how to do something like this.

You would likely need to establish a network communication between the Raspberry Pi and the device.
For the server:

The HOST for each is going to be the device IPv4 address, usually in format:
192.168.x.x.
I have not personally found a way without using serials for data communication. The most common way to communicate information between devices is over network. Look into peer-to-peer network solutions.
The code may not work as is, you will need to make client/server-side code specific for your needs.

Writing a GSM emulator for use with Android

For some work I'm doing, I want to have an emulated GSM modem which will communicate with an Android-x86 virtual machine over a Unix socket. The VM should see the emulator as a real modem and use it to send SMS (as the first pass of functionality).
So far, I've put something together which handles some AT commands and just replies "OK" to all the rest. For some commands, like "AT+CRSM", I just have a table of responses gathered from running the official Android emulator and looking at the radio log. For others, I maintain some state and construct answers; those commands include:
CFUN?
CPIN?
CGREG?
CGREG?
COPS?
CGREG=
CREG=
CPIN=
COPS=
CRSM=
CSMS=
CGSN
CIMI
CSQ
Android will boot, and send commands to my emulated modem, which answers, however it doesn't seem to be fully functional. Android doesn't detect any radio signal strength, for instance, just showing an "x" in the signal bar.
Does anyone know of a similar project, or just what AT commands are absolutely necessary to get some basic functionality?
Well, I'll answer another of my own questions, it's easier that way.
I ended up implementing an emulator which maintains a little bit of state, such as whether or not unsolicited CREG and CGREG messages are enabled, the network registration status & network name format (for the COPS command), and a message reference counter for SMS.
It supports the following commands:
CFUN?
CPIN?
CGREG?
CREG?
COPS?
CGREG=
CREG=
CPIN=
COPS=
CRSM=
CSMS=
CMGS=
CGSN
CIMI
CSQ
All other messages just get an "OK" response.
With the stock AOSP Android source running in an emulator with the "-radio unix:/tmp/phone" switch, I can send SMS messages and decode the binary PDUs into real messages. I will continue to add functionality so SMS messages can be injected back to Android, and hopefully open-source the code at some point.

Reading the values from OBD II Bluetooth adapter in the android application

Can anyone give me an idea on how to read the values from the OBD II Bluetooth adapter in an android application.
I want to start with scanning for the bluetooth devices from my android application, then after bluetooth device is found, how would I interact with it and get the values from it?

then find paired/unpaired devices
I used the BluetoothChat Application and was able to get some basic communications, I am not moving into data logging. You can use this application to have a sort of instant messenger conversation with your ECM.
What particular dongle are you using?
Do you know what protocols are in use within your vehicle?
Download the BluetoothChat sample application -
They will have already handled the intricacies of the connection for you, you will have to change the UUID in order to connect with your device - 00001101-0000-1000-8000-00805F9B34FB
Read up on your particular dongle, some require the return character to be sentat the end of every command "\r"
This should get you started!
Once you have made the Bluetooth connection using the android bluetooth api, use the transport to send and receive data via the Bluetooth channel.

The general workflow of the application functionality should go like this:
1) connect to the OBDII adapter through Bluetooth;
2) initialize OBDII adapter with AT commands;
3) continuously get data from the vehicle through issuing the corresponding PID codes.
