Android- How to get JSON values from string - android

I have three strings. Following the value of String a;:
{"a":"value","b":"value"}
And the value of String b;:
[{"a":"value","b":"value"},{"c":"value","d":"value"}]
And the value of String c;:
[[{"a":"value","b":"value"},{"c":"value","d":"value"}],[{"e":"value2","f":"value"},{"g":"value2","h":"value"}]]
How to get the value of a of String a;, the value of a and c of String b; and a, d, f and h of String c; through JSON without use libraries beyond those already available?

Use JSONObject. For json String a:
JSONObject aObj = new JSONObject(a);
String a = jObj.getString("a");
String b = jObj.getString("b");
Json string b:
JSONArray bArr = new JSONArray(b);
JSONObject first = bArr.getJSONObject(0);
Json string c:
JSONArray cArr = new JSONArray(b);
JSONArray innerArr = cArr.getJSONArray(0);
JSONObject first = innerArr.getJSONObject(0);

Try using the GSON parser. See http://www.javacodegeeks.com/2011/01/android-json-parsing-gson-tutorial.html or many other resources

Parsing json code to a string in android using volley

i need help to parse this json code to actual strings using android volley. this is the json code:[{"name":"Tayo","0":"Tayo","thread_name":"Welcome","1":"Welcome","post":"Hi there,","2":"Hi there,","post_time":"Sunday","3":"Sunday"},{"name":"Pete","0":"Pete","thread_name":"Welcome","1":"Welcome","post":"Hi,am pete","2":"Hi,am pete","post_time":"Monday","3":"Monday"}].
I have tried other helps but not working. Thanks!
Remember:
if the .json content starts with { is considered as a Json Object.
if the .json content starts with [ is considered as a Json Array.
so you hava a JsonArray then you can parse your content like this way:
//Obtain the JsonArray
JSONArray jsonArray = new JSONArray(myJsonContent);
// Get the JsonObjects inside JsonArray
for(int i=0;i<jsonArray.length();i++){
JSONObject jsonobject = jsonArray.getJSONObject(i);
}
// strData is the json data received.
JSONArray jsonArray = new JSONArray(strData);
for (int i=0; i<jsonArray.length();i++){
JSONObject jsonObject = jsonArray.getJSONObject(i);
String name = jsonObject.optString("name");
String zero = jsonObject.optString("0");
String thread_name = jsonObject.optString("thread_name");
String one = jsonObject.optString("1");
String post = jsonObject.optString("post");
String two = jsonObject.optString("2");
String post_time = jsonObject.optString("post_time");
String three = jsonObject.optString("3");
//Just an example
arrayName.add(jsonObject.optString("name"));
}
You can even use array to store data instead of the string.

(Android) JSONObject cannot be converted to JSONArray

My below android code is throwing
org.json.JSONException: Value
{"ID":1,"DisplayName":"Manish","UserName":"manish.parab#hotmail.com"}
at AuthenticateUserResult of type org.json.JSONObject cannot be
converted to JSONArray
Code:
String response = Common.ExecuteHttpRequest(Url);
JSONObject jsonObject = new JSONObject(response);
JSONArray jArray = jsonObject.getJSONArray("AuthenticateUserResult");
response is string from WCF method.
{"AuthenticateUserResult":{"DisplayName":"Manish","ID":1,"UserName":"manish.parab#hotmail.com"}}
The value of AuthenticateUserResult is a JSON Object (it's enclosed in {}).
Change that line to this
JSONObject jArray = jsonObject.getJSONObject("AuthenticateUserResult");
Then you can get your data as follows :
String displayName = jArray.getString("DisplayName");
// Etc...
There are three workarounds to solve this problem.
1.Use JsonObject. Your WCF server just give it in JsonObject.
String response = Common.ExecuteHttpRequest(Url);
JSONObject jsonObject = new JSONObject(response).getJSONObject("AuthenticateUserResult");
2.Use json array as a container
String response = Common.ExecuteHttpRequest(Url);
JSONObject jsonObject = new JSONObject(response);
JSONArray jArray = new JSONArray().put(jsonObject.getJSONObject("AuthenticateUserResult"));
3.Edit server to provide AuthenticationUserResult into json array. The right format would be as below.
{"AuthenticateUserResult":[{"DisplayName":"Manish","ID":1,"UserName":"manish.parab#hotmail.com"}]}
The exception is right, because "AuthenticateUserResult" value is declared as an element ({}) and not as an array ({}).
To fix this, use getJSONObject method to get the value of "AuthenticateUserResult", like this:
String response = Common.ExecuteHttpRequest(Url);
JSONObject jsonObject = new JSONObject(response);
JSONObject result = jsonObject.getJSONObject("AuthenticateUserResult");
After that, you can retrieve a child element, like:
String mUserName = result.getString("UserName");

Convert JSONObject into String array

I'm receiving a JSONObject like this
{"tag":"value1", "tag":"value2", .............}
How do I make it into a String array of
["value1", "value2"]
Create the Arraylist and get the string from the jsonobject and stored it in the arraylist.
Do like this
ArrayList tagarray=new ArrayList();
JSONObject jo=new JSONObject(jsonstring);
for(int i=0;i<jo.length();i++){
tagarray.add(jo.getString("tag"));
}
Try this way
JSONObject obj = new JSONObject("");
Iterator<String> itr = obj.keys();
int i=0;
String[] values = new String[obj.length()];
while(itr.hasNext()){
values[i++] = obj.getString((String)itr.next());
}
Use following code.
ArrayList array=new ArrayList();
JSONObject jo=new JSONObject(jsonstring);
for(int i=0;i<jo.length();i++){
array.add(jo.getString("tag"));
}
String[] Arr = new String[array.size()];
Arr = array.toArray(Arr);
Or you have another option.
JSONObject jo=new JSONObject(jsonstring);
String[] array = new String[jo.length()];
for(int i=0;i<jo.length();i++){
array[i] = jo.getString("tag");
}
There is super cool , lib called GSON , which is really helpfull for converting all type of JSON into its object .
If tags are going to be tag1, tag2 and so on...you can use a for loop,
string[i] = jsonObj.getString("tag"+i);
Or you can make a model class with datatype of String or ArrayList tag , eg.
class ModelClass{
ArrayList<String> tag;
//getter setter here
}
And with that use Gson for JSON parsing and mapping the data,
Gson gson = new Gson();
modelClass= gson.fromJson(yourJson,ModelClass.class);
And your work is done. You have each value in the ArrayList tag.
This is more useful for parsing and mapping long and-or complex json strings.
https://code.google.com/p/google-gson/
For Naming discrepancies(according to the variables in webservice), can use annotations like #SerializedName. (So no need to use Serializable)

Android parsing a JSON message

I'm trying to parse the following JSON string
String _message = "GetXTRONResult: \"[{\"xtron\":\"Acub1\"},{\"xtron\":\"Acub2\"},{\"xtron\":\"Acub3A\"}]\"";
JSONObject jsonObj = new JSONObject(_message);
//Try to convert to array
JSONArray array = jsonObj.getJSONArray("GetXTRONResult"); //FAILS !
What is the best way to parse the above please?
UPDATE:
This is what the value is during debugging:
{"GetXTRONResult":"[{\"xtron\":\"Acub1\"},{\"xtron\":\"Acub2\"},{\"xtron\":\"Acub3A\"}]"}
org.json.JSONException: Value .... at GetXTRONResultof type java.lang.String cannot be converted to JSONArray
SOLUTION THAT WORKED FOR ME:
I had to use the iterator as follows:
ArrayList list = new ArrayList();
JSONObject jsonObj = new JSONObject(_message);
Iterator<?> keys = jsonObj.keys();
if (keys.hasNext()) {
JSONArray array = new JSONArray((String) jsonObj.get((String) keys.next()));
for (int i = 0; i < array.length(); ++i) {
list.add(array.getJSONObject(i).getString("xtron").toString());
}
You have some errors in your json string, like "[.
You can't use quotes that wrap your list.
This one should work:
String _message = "{\"GetXTRONResult\": [{\"xtron\":\"Acub1\"},{\"xtron\":\"Acub2\"},{\"xtron\":\"Acub3A\"}]}";
JSONObject jsonObj = new JSONObject(_message);
//Try to convert to array
JSONArray array = jsonObj.getJSONArray("GetXTRONResult");
System.out.println(array);
Output: [{"xtron":"Acub1"},{"xtron":"Acub2"},{"xtron":"Acub3A"}]
To avoid your confusion when making JSON in java/android
you could use single quote (') instead of double quote (") for JSON inside Java Code
For example:
from
"{\"xtron\":\"Acub1\"},{\"xtron\":\"Acub2\"},{\"xtron\":\"Acub3A\"}"
to be something like this
"{'xtron':'Acub1'},{'xtron':'Acub2'},{'xtron':'Acub3A'}"
I think this is what you're looking for:
JSONObject rootObj = new JSONObject(jsonString);
String theArrayJSON = rootObj.getJSONArray("GetXTRONResult");
JSONObject theArray = new JSONObject(theArrayJSON);

Creating a JSON from an ArrayList of stings in Android

I have an array of string:
a = ["bob","jade","smith"]
I want to convert this to a JSON output like the following in my Android application, this data needs to be sent to the server.
{"names":["bob","jade","smith"]}
Plz help.
I have tried this:
Gson abs = new Gson();
String data = abs.toJson(a);
JSONObject jObjectType = new JSONObject();
jObjectType.put("names",data);
data=jObjectType.toString();
This is my output on the log:
{"names":"[\"bob\",\"jade\",\"smith\"]"}
JSONArray names = new JSONArray(Arrays.asList(a));
JSONObject jsonToSend = new JSONObject();
jsonToSend.put("names", names);
Look into Gson, this library allows you to convert any object to JSON format, and back to the same object once you receive the JSON.
(Serialization)
Gson gson = new Gson();
int[] values = { 1 };
gson.toJson(values); ==> prints [1]
(Deserialization)
int one = gson.fromJson("1", int.class);
Integer one = gson.fromJson("1", Integer.class);
Long one = gson.fromJson("1", Long.class);
Boolean false = gson.fromJson("false", Boolean.class);
String str = gson.fromJson("\"abc\"", String.class);
String anotherStr = gson.fromJson("[\"abc\"]", String.class);
