I want in my app (Android 4.0+) use offline maps (map of the city or small area). User should choose the area or city and then, the app should download the data or the data could be in assets.
Or can I somehow get the access to the data from Google Maps app, if the User downloaded some area, so the data should be in the phone?
App will not be on Google Play.
What way do you recommend? Use OpenStreetMap? Some other solution?

Based on the area you what to use in you app, OSM can be much better than Google and obvious the data is free and daily improved. Here is a question with a list of alternatives to Google API: Alternatives to google maps api
I recommend you to take a look for offline maps using OSM data at these libraries:
osmdroid : there is a bonus library for routing called osmbonuspack that adds lots of routing and POI functionality
skobbler has an SDK supports offline mode and is able to render maps & display turn by turn navigation on your Android phone. Here is their developer platform
OsmSharp also does offline rendering of vector-data and turn by turn navigation. The code is available on github
mapsforge: offers the map data in vector format and is working with another library called graphhopper in android

Does anyone know what alternatives there are (preferably free/open source) to google maps or iOS maps?
What I need to do is make a native app for both Android and iOS with turn based navigation. Although Google map and iOS maps are very good at this, I need the GPS to be handled in the app. So te application can't rely on closing the current app, and then opening the phones default maps applications.
Having looked into Android, it seems I can get Google maps for Business that can possibly do this, but the license is very expensive.
Is there an alternative that I can use to run GPS maps inside my own app? The app will have to allow button clicks to mark points on a map as the user is navigating hence I can't switch between the app and the devices native maps. The switching process is too long to be accurate.
Have looked at Garmin but their solution seems to work on Windows phones only.
I have used Mapquest maps for android apps before, I think they have a pretty good API and great support!

I'm trying to make an Android application that displays a map of a Park and when a user taps on a certain location on the map, the application goes to another screen.
Problem is that currently my map of the park is in a .jpg format. Which mapping API is best for my application and how would I go about converting this .jpg map into a format that is accepted by the API.

Adding an overlay for Google maps with a custom map is pretty easy to do, the sample code works out of the box.
To overlay the map you need to have a rough idea of the gps coordinates of the park. There are other demos to make your map more useful for example:
traffic info to get to the event/park
a 3D perspective if you want for eye candy
GPS of users current location with relation to the park
make the overlay opaque, or slightly transparent
custom markers so the user can tap and open another screen
Well, you can use the google maps api v2 in android, and you create an Overlay map and implement the getTile, here you can find more info:

but the only thing is, change the properties in order that the maps ask for the tile you want to send, lest say that you have 4 tiles for your map, so use a zoom level that only allows 4 tiles to be delivered and then you return the corresponding tile to the map.
also you have to set the type map to NONE.

I am developing an android app (prediction app) which requires to store
(a) prediction result and
(b) actual user result.
Based on this data, I want users to show actual predicted/actual result values to user.
So this requires very small amount of data to be stored and and shared via a common database in cloud.
Currently I was going through Google Cloud Platform: Mobile Backend Starter, which i thought is a very nice option. But looking into the sample, it seems it requires minimum API level of 15. But I want to support my app from API level 8 and above, i.e. android 2.2 Can it be used for API level 8 and above?
Can MongoDB work with android ? This link says, it is not available for Android. is it so?
I tested parse.com a few times and it works for smaller projects for free.

I need to make an android app which will show some specific places in a map. and I want to use GPS for tracking user place and showing him the direction. but I want to assume that there is no Internet access at all because I want my application works completely offline.

There may be ways to use OpenStreetMap's OSMDroid library and package its map tiles with the app. The only apps I have used with OSMDroid have downloaded tiles after the app was installed, perhaps due to size.
Google Maps Api v2 or v3 is ideal.

Does anyone know how to create a 2D building map for example a mall, and also locate or pinpoint the user current location? My classmate told me to use Google Maps API, but I prefer not to use it.
I've a friend that swears by OpenStreetMap so if you don't want to follow the Google route then this could be a good option. They too are interested in creating maps for indoor space and lots of information can be found here:

I'm no expert, but by the looks of it, it seems as if there are tools, such as JOSM, which allow you to create the indoor maps - a quick start guide to using JOSM indoors can be found here. It does seem to assume that you have floor plans of a building. As far as I'm aware (correct me if I am wrong) there is currently no software, that lets you walk around a building creating a map!
Locating a users current location is difficult. GPS tends not to work in indoor spaces, so you need to consider which would be the best option. Additionally if you are working with a multi-floored building then you need some method to work out what floor the user is on. There are a number of possible solutions:
Attach GPS Antennae to the buildig and use a repeater to boost the coverage to the rest of the building
Google uses wi-fi networks and mobile masts to determine location. If you want to know more about this approach check out WifiSlam. They're now owned by Apple but there are some interesting articles in the top 10 or so search results of Google about them and this technology!
Use image recognition to determine the users location. You could use something like Google Goggles. Users could take images of the room-numbers/shop-signs/QR codes which are then processed followed by a location being provided
None of these are particularly easy, so perhaps a different approach could be taken!
