I installed Android Studio 0.8.14 and was immediately aware to the face that it doesn't show me suggestions, instead it only pops - "Cannot resolve symbol X".
I'm using it on OS X.
I already tried to google it and found the following solutions:
1) Check that the "File->Power Save Mode" isn't selected.
2) In "Preferences" - that the "Android" intentions are selected.
3) Reinstalling it, after deleting all the cookies and local library files.
None of them solved it for me :/
If you put the cursor on the word with the error, a little icon should appear to the left of that line of code. If you click on that you should see the suggestions.
i use mac and had the same problem. i figured out that the android studio does show compile suggestions. What you have to do is click on the word not just move the cursor on it! To accept it, use alte + Enter.
this is my first post on Stackoverflow and i hope it works for u;)
Luckily this question is not relevant anymore since google has released Android Studio 2 on Frbruary 2016. I recommend using that version since it's much more stable and works faster then the 1.x.x versions.

I'm having trouble with my android studio and I even changed my windows, now I'm just frustrated. Can someone help me? I almost looked everywhere.
So this is when I've installed android studio and this appears.
Then it automatically goes to this page and wants to download android SDK but the check box is not activated! and as you can see the download size is 0!
And that's the next one!
So I quitted the setup and opened the SDK manager from the android studio and this is what it says:

does anyone know what should I do to download SDK? And by the way, I'm living in Iran, that's one of those countries that include United States sanctions. Do you think it's related and if Yes what should I do?
p.s: This is the first time I'm asking a question on Stackoverflow, so forgive me if I did something wrong in the asking process.
After doing some changes to my IP I could fix the problem. So, if anyone has the same problem I think it's related to their countries limit problems. You should change your IP.
I have downloaded all documentation with SDK manager help. But how can I open this documentation and the samples of code in Android Studio after downloading?
According to Android Studio Tips and Tricks, you can press Ctrl+Q to show docs for selected API under Windows or F1 under Mac.
For the samples , you can use eclipse to export to Android Studio.
First you need to make sure the documentation is added to Android Studio.
Go to File -> Project Structure. Under the Platform Settings heading, add or select an Android Platform. Go to the Documentation Paths tab and make sure the path to your SDK's documenation folder is added there - it should be [SDK]\docs\reference, where [SDK] is the full path to your SDK installation. If it is not there add it manually.
Once this is done, use Ctrl+F1 while your cursor is on the item you want to display help for.
The samples have not been ported to Android Studio yet, but I'm sure google will get around to it at some point. For now follow the instructions in the comments by androidika (you will need a copy of Eclipse installed).
In Android Studio you need to download javadoc dependency which is part of sdk.
If you enable documentation to appear while writing code in android studio by navigating to
File-> Settings-> Editor-> General-> Other
and
selecting(check box) Show Quick documentation on mouse move, you would get irritating after some time because it will come out automatically you when you would be writing code.
So, I think we should go to alternative ways by using Ctrl + Q(on Ubuntu at least I am not sure of other environments). This way when you would feel help you can simply use the simple command.
I was trying to find this setting in the latest build of android studio, and after wasting a lot of time I finally found out that now the ide automatically finds the documentation, which can be opened with shift+f1 on a method.
Now a days once you Import project in Android studio, it will automatically shows docs. But on mouse hover you want to expand it.
Docs hover page was simply resized very short like the above, it looks like docs is not avail. But when I Carefully moving the mouse down to the bottom of the hover page allowed me to resize it.
few days ago, when I was debugging an Android project under eclipse I've found some great functionality: "All instances..." and "Instance count". I wanted to share my findings with rest of my colleagues, but none of them had this functionality in their eclipse install (we all use eclipse 3.7).
What's even more weird now I'm also missing this functionality.
As far as I can tell this functionality is build within eclipse from version 3.3 and available to projects using Java 1.6 and above as mentioned here and here (we're using 1.6).
See bottom of this link to see what functionality I'm talking about. It even has it's own shortcut in options (ctrl+shift+n) so I think there must be a way to use it again.
I was looking for it while debugging and while the debugger was in "stopped" state.
Anyone can help me put eclipse in right view/perspective/state to see this functionality again?
EDIT
Here is the documentation entry from eclipse help page: link
Thanks for any suggestions,
kajman
After some more digging I came to following conclusion:
DalvikVM does not support "instance retrieval".
On eclipse help page mentioned in EDIT section it written:
This command is only available if the Java virtual machine you are currently using supports instance retrieval.
Maybe there is an option to enable this option in DalvikVM, but I doubt it unfortunately.
Also when debugging on phone "Drop to frame" functionality is missing.
My situation is: I once made an android project(2.2 version) but soon needed to format my computer. After formatting, I downloaded eclipse again but when I imported my project, I wasn't able to use the 'graphical layout' menu for xml. It doesn't show me anything like the picture below.
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/3586/19978552.png
I cleaned the project and updated the Android SDK, however, none of these seemed to work well. What could be causing this?
Try restarting Eclipse. Usually that solves the problem for me when that happens.
Right click on your layout xml file and select Open With -> Android Layout Editor. It will force eclipse to open file in android's layout editor mode
None of above worked for me. what worked for me is:
1- Select a Google APIs Project Build Target rather than one of the Android X.X ones. This setting is in right click on project -> Properties->Android.
2- Make a change in XML and save it. Now switch back to "Graphical Layout" and it will show the layout.
For some, only 2nd step works.
This Question was asked 3 year ago, I am sure that you have get your solution, however i was also facing the same problem but got the solution in eclipse, here it is:-
1)Goto help->AboutEclipse->Installation details.
2)check the version of Android DDMS, Android development tool, Android hierarchy viewer, Android native development tool, Android trace view and tracer for openGl ES in installed software tab.
3)If they have different version than you have to update all of them.
4)Goto help->check for update in eclipse and follow the instruction.
5)Then restart eclipse.
This solve my problem.
The topic seems a little bit cold, but I wanted to add it nonetheless.
I had a similar problem with my layouts recently. When i create a project it automatically creates the layouts in the latest version of Android (eclipse shows it as version 22 of android as of today). But i can't see anything. So i just change the version to, say 18, and it shows ok. Furthermore if i want to change it back to version 22 it throws and exception, saying that a class can't be instantiated. (I am probably missing a class or a library on my system.)
Therefore if you cant see the layout it might be a good idea to switch back to earlier versions for development. cheers.
I don't get this. I've searched everywhere and no one's answers have solved this for me.
Why does this keep happening? I can't do anything! The XML Code is still there, but it doesn't show anything in the Graphical Editor. The Palette comes up if I change it to "4in WVGA (Nexus S)" or some other configuration, but I still can't see anything and the Theme drop down menu is unselectable. All my XML documents are like that.
Just delete any custom device screen configuration you have added . It will solve the issue :)
That just happen to me and after some attempts I found the reason.
When I first opened the project in eclipse I found some errors related with the version of Java. I changed the JDK compliance to 1.6 (Project->Properties->Java Compiler) and all errors dissapear but all graphical layouts went blank.
I uncheked "Enable project specific settings" (Project->Properties->Java Compiler) and now all the graphical layouts are working.
When everything fails, close eclipse and start it all over again, it solved my problem.
I also had that problem, it happened to me when i imported my project. after some time I came to reason just change the workspace of eclipse to folder, which contains your folder.
I changed workspace on opening eclipse, there can be some other way as well
hope this will solve it
If it has never worked for you (or something went wrong upgrading your SDK, as in my case), you may need to install an extra package. For me the issue was fixed when I installed Android Native Development Tools under NDK Plugins (SDK version 20).
I had this problem since I switched the option Show previews in the palette. I switched to show only icons, everything is ok now.
