I've installed Android studio 3.0.1 then tried to build very first app by choosing an empty activity, but I've got this message:

I've tried some suggested solutions like changing gradle version, update Kotlin plugin(!) and so, but they didn't work.

This problem occurs when the Build Tools Version is not set for the project.
You just set the build tools version by following this process...
By opening your project structure [File->Project Structure] and selecting the Build Tools Version from app's property tab in Modules section.
This will add build tools version to your gradle file (Module:app) and re-sync the project.
The problem caused by my connection. I needed to set proxy to download some components.
For me the issue was one of the external libraries required SDK 28 but android studio didnt have it so it did not work. I installed SDK 28 and the problem was fixed. I saw the problem in the log file it generated
The error happens under fluctuating network. So at first make sure your connection is stable. Plus, if you are using any VPN check your gradle.properties is configured correctly.
The correct form of VPN connection on gradle.properties is as follows,
systemProp.http.proxyHost=127.0.0.1
systemProp.http.proxyPort=8080
systemProp.https.proxyHost=127.0.0.1
systemProp.https.proxyPort=8080
My host connection is 127.0.0.1, and its port is 8080 for both http and https.
Just one more thing, make sure adding https (It is mandatory).
I had the same problem when i was upgrading to android studio 3.1.2 and the problem i was using the previous JDK which i installed before 5 years back.
The steps:-
Go to File -> Project Structures -> SDK Location -> JDK Location -> check the
Option Use embedded JDK (recommended).
I tried all suggestions, only one works for me:
open 'Gradle' tab on right vertical panel
right click on project name
'Refresh Gradle Dependencies' and wait background downloading
right click on project name again

I had the same problem, I did download gradle version and used it as a local distribution.

The solution is kinda of very simple.
It's because the "compileSdkVersion" that you are using
in your build.gradle (Module:app) is higher than the SDK installed in your Android studio.
Now, what to do?
Just go on SDK Manager and download an Api Level higher or equal to your "compileSdkVersion" and you're done
Look at the manifest, something may have to go wrong there. In my case I had this label
<uses-sdk android: minSdkVersion = "7" android: targetSdkVersion = "15" />, which was from an example.
Then the error is displayed, and the correspondent is now updated <uses-sdk android: minSdkVersion = "15" android: targetSdkVersion = "27" />

I have Android Studio 2.2. I am trying to open a project, but I get the error "Failed to find target with hash string 'android-25'". Below the error message I see a link "Install missing platform(s) and sync project". If I click this link, I get another error, which says
"The following packages are not available: - Package id
platforms;android-25".
In the Android SDK tool, I can see "Android 7.0" (API level 24) already installed. On checking the details about Android verisons and its API levels, I found that Android Nougat has API levels 24-25. I would like to know how I can update the SDK from API24 to 25?
You don't need to update anything. Just download the SDK for API 25 from Android SDK Manager or by launching Android standalone SDK manager. The error is for missing platform and not for missing tool.
Well, I was suffering with this Issue but finally I found the solution.
Problem Starts Here:

Problem Source: Just check out the app -> src-build.gradle and you will find the parameters
compileSdkVersion 25
buildToolsVersion "25.0.1"
targetSdkVersion 25
Note: You might find these parameters with different values e.g
compileSdkVersion 23 etc.
These above parameters in build.gradle creates error because their values are not compatible with your current SDK version.
The solution to This error is simple, just open a new project in your Android Studio, In that new project goto app -> src-build.gradle.
In build.gradle file of new project find these parameters:
In my case these are:
compileSdkVersion "26"
buildToolsVersion "26.0.1"
targetSdkVersion 26
Now copy these parameters from your new project build.gradle file and post them in the same file of the other project(having Error).
I got similar problem
1: I tried to resolve with the answer which is marked correct above But I was not able to get the system setting which was quit amazing (On MacBook).
Most of the time such errors & issues comes because of replacing your grade file with other grade file ,due which gradel does not sync properly and while building the project issue comes . The issue is bascially related to non syncing for platform tools
Solution a: Go to File and then to Your project strucutre -modules -app-Properties -build tool version -click on options which is required for your project (if required build tool version not there chose any other). This will sync the grade file and now you can go to gradel and change target version and build tool version as per your requirement .you will prompted to download the required platform tool to sync it , now click on install tool version and let project to build
Solution b: Try Anuja Ans if you can get option of system setting and install platform tool.
Make sure your computer is connected to the internet, then click on the link that comes with the error message i.e "install missing platform(s) and sync project". Give it a few seconds especially if your computer has low specs, it will bring up a window called SDK Quickfix Installation and everything is straightforward from there.

You can open the SDK standalone by going to installation directory, just right click on the SDK Manager.exe and click on run as Administrator. i hope it will help.
the default gradle version 3.3 may have some bugs, I switched to gradle 3.5 and everything got ok
I have got same error for Android-28. In SDK manager - SDK Platform it shows me that Android API 28 is partially installed and no further updates available. so that I updated ANDROID-SDK-BUILD-TOOLS from SDK Tools and after restarting project. It will work. This might be helpful for other who faces same issue as I faced.
It seems like that it is only me who are so clumsy, because i have yet to found a solution that my case required.
I am developing a multi-modular project, thus base android module configuration is extracted in single gradle script. All the concrete versions of sdks/libs are also extracted in a script.
A script containing versions looked like this:

Not accustomed to groovy syntax my eye has not spotted that the values for compile, min and target sdks were not integers but STRINGS! Therefore a compiler rightfully complained about not being able to find an sdk a version of which would match HASH STRING '27'.
So the solution would be to make sdk's versions integers:

I had similar issue for android-29. My issue occurred because when AS was unzipping one downloaded SDK I had stopped it. For solving the issue disable gradle offline mode then sync with gradle files. You may need to set proxy and enable it.
I get this error when trying to build my project after changing laptop and updating to Android Studio version 0.8.2.

Though late in answering, this is a hard one to Google (the single quotes) and it’s not clear what’s happening. I don't have the reputation yet to comment or ask for scope (or post 3 links), so this answer may be a little tedious.
To answer fast, you may have multiple Gradle plugins in your project.
Synchronize Gradle Wrapper and Plugins
My issue seemed to start with a corrupted IML file. Android Studio (between closing and reopening a project) began complaining an IML was gone (it wasn’t) and a module should be deleted, which I declined. It persisted, I upgraded to AS 0.8.7 (canary channel) and got stuck on the OP issue (Task '' not found in root project). This completely blocked builds so I had to dig in to Gradle.
My repair steps on OSX (please adjust for Windows):
Upgrade Android Studio to 0.8.7
Preferences | Updates | Switch "Beta Channel" to "Canary Channel", then do a Check Now.
You might be able to skip this.
Checked the Gradle wrapper (currently 1.12.2; don’t try to use 2.0 at this time).
Assuming you don’t need a particular version, use the latest supported distribution
$ vi ~/project/gradle-wrapper.properties ... distributionUrl=http\://services.gradle.org/distributions/gradle-1.12-all.zip
This can be set in Android Studio at Preferences | Gradle (but 0.8.7 was giving me ‘invalid location’ errors).
The 'wrapper' is just a copy of Gradle for each Android Studio project. It allows you to have Gradle 2 in your OS, and different versions in your projects. The Android Developer docs explain that here.
Then adjust your build.gradle files for the plugin. The Gradle plugin version must be compatible with the distribution/wrapper version, for the whole project. As the Tools documentation (tools.android.com/tech-docs/new-build-system/user-guide#TOC-Requirements) is slightly out of date, you can set the plugin version too low (like 0.8.0) and Android Studio will throw an error with the acceptable range for the wrapper.
Example, in build.gradle, you have this plugin:

You can try switching it to the exact version, like this:
dependencies {
classpath "com.android.tools.build:gradle:0.12.2"
}
and (after recording what version you’re changing from in each case) verifying that every build.gradle file in your project pulls in the same plugin version. Keeping the “+” should work (for 0.12.0, 0.12.1, 0.12.2, etc), but my build succeeded when I updated Google’s Volley library (originally gradle:0.8.+) and my main project (originally 0.12.+) to the fixed version: gradle:0.12.2.
Other checks
Ensure you don’t have two Android Application modules in the same Project
This may interact with the final solution (different Gradle versions, above), and cause
UNEXPECTED TOP-LEVEL EXCEPTION: com.android.dex.DexException: Multiple dex files define (various classes)
To check, Build | Make Project should not pop up a window asking what application you want to make.
Invalidate your caches
File | Invalidate Caches / Restart (stackoverflow.com/a/19223269/513413)
If step 2 doesn't work, delete ~/.gradle/ (www.wuttech.com/index.php/tag/groovy-lang-closure/)
Quit Android Studio
$ rm -rf ~/.gradle/
Start Android Studio, then sync:
Tools | Android | Sync Project with Gradle Files
Repeat this entire sequence (quit...sync) a few times before giving up.
Clean the project
Build | Clean Project

If You See This...
In my recent builds, I kept seeing horrible fails (pages of exceptions) but within seconds the messages would clear, build succeeded and the app deployed. Since I could never explain it and the app worked, I never noticed that I had two Gradle plugins in my project. So I think the Gradle plugins fought each other; one crashed, the other lost its state and reported the error.
If you have time, the 1-hour video "A Gentle Introduction to Gradle" (www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFUEb7pLLXw) really helped me approach the Gradle build files, tasks, build decisions, etc.

Download system image(of targeted android level of your project) from sdk manager for the project you have imported.
This error comes when you do not have target sdk of your android project installed in sdk folder
for eg. Your imported project's target sdk level may be android-19 and on sdk folder->system-images you may have android-21 installed. so you have to download android-19 system image and other files from sdk manager or you can copy paste it if you have the system image.
Remove:

This happened to me recently when I close one Android Studio project and imported another Eclipse project. It seemed to be some bug in Android Studio where it preserves some gradle settings from previously open project and then get confused in the new project.
The solution was extremely simple: Close the project and shut down Android Studio completely, before re-opening it and then import/open the new project. Everything goes smoothly from then on.
Apparently this error has multiple causes. Here's what fixed it for me.
I was running the build command like this:
./gradlew :testapp: build
Running it without the space fixed the issue:
./gradlew :testapp:build
I got this error when switching from one Git branch to another, and then trying to run "Clean Project". I used ack to search for the Task name, and found it in a .iml file.
My solution was to regenerate the project's .iml file by clicking (in the main menu) Tools > Android > Sync Project with Gradle Files. (Thanks to this answer.)
In my case, setting the 'Gradle version' same as the 'Android Plugin version' under File->Project Structure->Project fixed the issue for me.
Simple fix for me was
Build > Clean project
Restart Android Studio
Yet another solution to the same problem:
This happened to me every time I imported an eclipse project into studio using the wizard (studio version 1.3.2).
What I found, quite by chance, was that quitting out of Android studio and then restarting studio again made the problem go away.
Frustrating, but hope this helps someone...
Sometimes, if you have opened two windows of Android Studio, and when you try to compile, this issue might happen. For me, when I was compiling a backed Google Cloud Endpoint module which was not embedded in a project, rather shared among different Android Studio projects, and when there is more than once instance open, this error use to spring up for me. But as soon as you close other windows, everything will be fine. Sometimes, you might have to restart Android Studio altogether.
I got this problem because it could not find the Android SDK path. I was missing a local.properties file with it or an ANDROID_HOME environment variable with it.
Make sure you have the latest values in your gradle files. As of this writing:

Apparently this issue caused by Android Studio on the various situation but the reason is build error When importing an existing project into android studio. In my case, I've imported my exist project where I was supposed to install few build tools then finally build configuration was done with error. In this case, just do the following things
Close the current project
File>New>Import Project (Don't use the open recent project)

I'm sure this kind of error is not on source code when this happened on Import project.
Problem
I specifically got the "[module_name]:prepareDebugUnitTestDependencies" task not found error, every time I ran gradle build. This happened to me after updating my Android Studio to 3.0.0.
Investigation
I had previously added command-line options to the gradle-based compiler, which you can find under: File -> Settings -> Build, Execution, Deployment -> Compiler -> Command-line Options. Specifically, I had excluded a number of tasks, including the aforementioned task. While that worked fine on the previous stable version (2.3 at that time), it seems like this was the reason behind the build failure.
Solution
This is one of many possible solutions.
Make sure you have the correct command-line options specified in the settings under: File -> Settings -> Build, Execution, Deployment -> Compiler -> Command-line Options, and that none of them is causing this problem.
In my case, I removed the exclusion of this task (and other tasks that seemed related), left the unrelated tasks excluded, and it worked!
I had the same problem and the "Tasks" tab doesn't appear to me on the Gradle settings, neither doing the commands gradlew signinReport or something.
I fix it doing the following steps:
1.- Add android: exported = "true" in my main activity of the AndroidManifest (because that Activity has an intent-filter)
2.- Update in Build.gradle (app) the compileSdkVersion to 31
3.- Update in the same place the targetSdkVersion also to 31.
4.- Click on "Sync now".
And that works for me.

For this you may simply just goto: SETTINGS > EXPERIMENTAL > Then uncheck the option:
"Do not build Gradle Task List during Gradle sync", Click on "Apply" > "Ok" and then click on the "Sync Project with Gradle files" option from the right side of the menu bar.

Import the project again
I remove/Rename .gradle folder in c:\users\Myuser\.gradle and restart Android Studio and worked for me
In my case, I meet this problem that compile options in Android Studio is "stacktrace." Modify stacktrace to --stacktrace, the problem solved.

Go to Android Studio(From Menu Bar) -> Preferences -> Build, Execution, Deployment -> Compiler . Then look for Command-Line Options , there make sure nothing typed in its Text Field. That should be empty. Then rebulid project and thats it.

The Android plugin 0.8.x doesn't support Gradle 1.11, you need to use 1.10.
You can read the proper error message in the "Gradle Console" tab.

You need to change gradle/wrapper/gradle-wrapper.properties file in this way:
distributionBase=GRADLE_USER_HOME
distributionPath=wrapper/dists
zipStoreBase=GRADLE_USER_HOME
zipStorePath=wrapper/dists
distributionUrl=http\://services.gradle.org/distributions/gradle-1.10-all.zip
In my case NDK location was the issue.
go to File->Project Structure->SDK Location and add NDK location

My problem exactly is incomplete gradle-1.12-all file download.

I re-downloaded the file from the gradle site here and extracted it in path/to/the/gradle, in my case was in C:\Users\maneeOsman\.gradle\wrapper\dists\gradle-1.12-all\2apkk7d25miauqf1pdjp1bm0uo
I closed the android studio and reopen it in administrator privilege (Run as administrator).
The android studio starts downloading the necessary files for building and debugging. You can notice that from bottom-left indicator bar.
After this, it is working fine.

Here is the solution I found: On the project tree "app", right click mouse button to get the context menu. Select "open module setting", on the tree "app" - "properties" tab, select the existing "build tools version" you have. The gradle will start to build.

My project was built successfully and ran on device and emulators although 5 warnings still remains.
Remove the dependency "junit:junit:4.12" from app modules...!!! This solution is for gradle to sync all files.

its you didn't see it it may be in hidden files so if you use windows 7
right click then click on properties and click on hidden to be not checked
then the file will appear then delete it

I know this is an old thread but I ended up here with the same issue.
I solved it by comparing the dependencies classpath in the build.gradle script(Project) to the installed version.
The error message was pointing to the following folder
C:\Program Files\Android\android-studio3 preview\gradle\m2repository\com\android\tools\build\gradle
It turned out that the alpha2 version was installed but the classpath was still pointing to alpaha1. A simple change to the classpath ('com.android.tools.build:gradle:3.0.0-alpha2') was all that was needed.
This may not help everyone, but I do hope it help most people out.

Using an outdated gradle version may also result to fail in synchronization.
Download latest version from https://gradle.org/releases/ and download the "complete" latest version.
Now replace it with the outdated version which is located C:\Program Files\Android\Android Studio\gradle.
Go to settings(ctrl+alt+s) ,go to gradle and add the the new gradle directory in "use local gradle distribution" "Gradle home:C:\Program Files\Android\Android Studio\gradle\gradle4.4.1 ."

I have faced this issue recently and it was resolved by updating android studio & updating gradle when prompted then rebuilding the project
I had a "Install build tools and sync" link in the lower right hand corner of my screen. I clicked on that and it fixed the issue.
Each version of the Android Gradle Plugin now has a default version of the build tools. For the best performance, you should use the latest possible version of both Gradle and the plugin.
You recive this warning in case if you use latest gradle plugin but not use latest SDK version. For example for Gradle plugin 3.2.0 (September 2018) you requires Gradle 4.6 or higher and SDK Build Tools 28.0.3 or higher.
Although you typically don't need to specify the build tools version, when using Android Gradle plugin 3.2.0 with renderscriptSupportModeEnabled set to true, you need to include the following in each module's build.gradle file: android.buildToolsVersion "28.0.3"

I had the same issue, can't say I know what caused it, but I just closed Android Studio, renamed the c:\users\MY USERNAME\.gradle directory to old-.gradle and then re-launched Android Studio.
Android studio then re-created the directory and automatically downloaded the gradle zip file and set it all up.
Seems to all be fine but to be honest I don't know what this directory is nor what the root cause of the problem was either, so proceed with caution and keep the old .gradle folder around for a bit until you're happy all is working fine.
For me the following two steps fixed the issue:
Make sure the Gradle build was successful
Android Studio - File - Invalidate Caches / Restart...
I suddenly had this issue in the morning after it working the night before. I tried all solutions here and failed.
I also tried installing another version of Gradle 1.8 and setting the gradle_home.
Tried restarting studio.
Eventually the tried and trusted method of restarting Windows worked for me.
All in all a frustrating waste of time.
I updated to 0.3.0 and had the same issue. I had to end up changing my Gradle version to classpath 'com.android.tools.build:gradle:0.6.1+' and in build.gradle and also changing the distributionUrl to distributionUrl=http\://services.gradle.org/distributions/gradle-1.8-bin.zip in the gradle-wrapper.properties file. Then I did a local import of the Gradle file. That worked for me.
I had this issue as well and jaywhy13 answer was good but not enough.
I had to change a setting: Settings -> Gradle -> MyProject
There you need to check the "auto import" and select "use customizable gradle wrapper". After that it should refresh gradle and you can build again. If not try a reboot of Android Studio.
First of all, JDK environment variable settings :
e.g) JAVA_HOME -> C:\develop\java\jdk\jdk1.8.0_25
path -> %JAVA_HOME%\bin;
eclipse
Window -> preferences -> Gradle -> Arguments -> Worksapce JRE check -> jdk(jdk1.8.0_25) choice
again Run -> gradle build :)
1- delete .gradle folder in the root directory of the app
2- invalidate cache and restart
As per answer by WarrenFaith, go to:
Settings -> Gradle -> Project-level settings
Change to Use customizable gradle wrapper.
Click OK and watch it build. If you still get an error at that stage, go back to:
Settings -> Gradle -> Project-level settings
Change it back to Use default gradle wrapper (recommended)
Click OK. That fixed it for me.
I had the same issue and i solved it by deleteing gradle-wrapper.jar and gradle-wrapper.properties file of Gradle wrapper then clean rebuild work for me.
I entered:
[C:\Users\user\].gradle\caches\1.8\scripts directory and deleted its content.
I didn't had to restart anything, just removed scripts content any rerun it.
For me, when using IntelliJ IDEA, this error arose because I had the Java SDK, rather than an Android SDK, set at the Project level.
My fix:
IntelliJ > File > Project Structure ...
Project > Project SDK > [Select] 'Android API 19 Platform (java version "1.7.0_40")'

I had the same problem on Ubuntu with Eclipse 4.3 (Kepler) and the problem was that I created the project with a minus-sign in it.
I recreated the project with no specialchars and it all worked fine
I had the same Gradle build problems in Eclipse and by doing the following steps, the problems were solved:
set up project to use correct java version of java
project properties-> java build path -> jre system (edit the current one, and add the correct java jdk or jre there)
window->Preferences ->Gradle->Arguments-> Workspace JRE (set to the correct one)

This happened to me after a java update, few things to check if you are sure your path has been set before:
if the path doesn't match the latest java install folder, change it (if your in eclipse check the eclipse.ini too to make sure your using your systems default vm (ie no VM tag) )
go to the java directory, there should be a 'jdk' and a 'jre' in the path, for example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.8.0_72\jre
if not you probably installed the JRE only not the JDK that
finally if the lib folder of the jdk (not jre) doesnt contain tools.jar then you have a problem with the install
I had a similar problem after doing brew install gradle. Perhaps it was because it was an older version. So I uninstalled and instead followed the gradle website's install instructions and then when I did gradle eclipse I no longer had the could not execute build using gradle distribution error.
This problem occurred to me when I edited the configurations in Android Studio to use the Desktop. However, using the default(android) seems to work well without any issues.
To correct this mistake very easily,
If you read logs. The problem occurs because of the sudden shutdown of the IDEA. And the log files do not correctly write data. Just delete the file on the path
