I have an empty scrollview. I create with inflater a text view, add it to the ScrollView programmatically and then do:
rsView.smoothScrollBy((viewLeft + viewWidth / 2) - center, 0);
BUT viewLeft and viewWidth are 0 as the view is not measured yet. Any suggestions on how to make it scroll the view properly?

Listen to Draw/Layout Events: ViewTreeObserver
A ViewTreeObserver gets fired for different drawing events. Usually the OnGlobalLayoutListener is what you want for getting the measurement, so the code in the listener will be called after the layout phase, so the measurments are ready:
view.getViewTreeObserver().addOnGlobalLayoutListener(new ViewTreeObserver.OnGlobalLayoutListener() {

rsView.smoothScrollBy((viewLeft + viewWidth / 2) - center, 0);

Move the smoothScrollBy() call to a Runnable and post that to the new TextView's handler after it's been added, which will cause it to run after it's been laid out. For example:

childView.post(new Runnable() {

rsView.smoothScrollBy((childView.getLeft() + childView.getWidth() / 2) - center, 0);
}

I'm not sure how you're calculating center, but if it depends on the new TextView's dimensions, you'll need to move the calculation to the Runnable, as well.

Android View with a translate animation - positioning is not working as expected

I have a View that has an OnClickListener. When clicked, the view translates up to a certain position on the page. This is no problem, the view goes where it should. When the view is clicked again, I would like to position it somewhere else, but this is not the case. After a little bit of trouble shooting, I found that my View's getTop() method returns the same value - even after the translation animation has moved the view to a different part of the screen. For the second animation, it is not using the current position (as I would expect), it instead uses the initial position.
Few things that I am doing: I am using the ObjectAnimation class rather than the TranslationAnimation class, since I wanted to keep the OnClickListener functioning. With the TranslationAnimation class, I found that the view was correctly moved, but the OnClickListener was only working in the area that the View started from. Using the ObjectAnimation class, I was able to easily get the translation to work AND the OnClickListener functions correctly - it is triggered where the view currently is on the screen.
Here's what I have so far:

This is what happens when the view is clicked the first time. It translates up along the Y axis, where the offset determines how far the View needs to move from its current position.
Now, here's what happens on the second click. The goal here was to align the view with the parent's base.
target = parent.getBottom();
offset = target - child.getTop();
anim = ObjectAnimator.ofFloat(child, "translationY",offset);
anim.setDuration(250);
anim.start();
prev = child;
This is where things fall apart - child.getTop() returns the Y coordinate of the view's ORIGINAL position. Not the current position. So after the animation, the view is placed well below the bottom of the parent. I read a different question which stated that I should use child.getY() instead, which is supposed to give me the translationY position plus the top position, but this didn't lead to any better results. I can't seem to get this to work just right. I'd simply like to move the view from its current position to the bottom of the screen, but this appears to be a hard thing to accomplish. Any help would be appreciated.

Here I am setting the listener to try to change where the Top of the view is located. Behaviour is again not working as expected. The view is actually sent up above the screen when I do this. Output of the System.out looks like this:
start: 2008 2008.0
end: 2008 478.0 -1530.0
478
So calling child.getTop() after the animation is complete and setting a new position returns a positive integer, but the view is not actually completely on screen. It is above the screen, partly visible. The height of the view itself is about 700px. I am still so confused as to why this is such a hard thing to accomplish.

I have also tried setting layoutparams inside the onAnimationEnd method:

Result: child.getTop() still returns the original position of 2008.
You can get the very bottom of the screen coordinates like this :
float bottomOfScreen = getResources().getDisplayMetrics().heightPixels;
but you probably want it minus the height of your LinearLayout or else your LinearLayout will be cut off by the bottom :
float bottomOfScreen = getResources().getDisplayMetrics().heightPixels
- child.getHeight();
// if you want a little more space to the bottom
// try something like - child.getHeight()*2;
Then use ViewPropertyAnimator to animate your LL like this :
child.animate()
.translationY(bottomOfScreen)
.setInterpolator(new AccelerateDecelerateInterpolator())
.setDuration(250);
The Interpolator is just to make the animation more realistic.
In the case that child.getHeight() returns 0 , your Linear Layout has not been finished setting up by the system, in that case you might want to do something like :

Remember that a duration of 250 milliseconds is very fast, and does usually not look cool translating stuff on the screen, so you might want to set it a little higher, but thats just a matter of taste.

Android setScroll position

I want to set scrollbar position becomes view visible.
I use
mView.setScrollY(150);
mView.setVisbility(View.VISIBLE);
But it's not worked. View stay visible but scroll position is 0.
Also i try to use a post :
mView.post(new Runnable(){

But now view was blinked( i see a start scrolly - 0 and after such ms(blink) scrollY becomes 150);

How to check whether ScrollView is scrollable

I was wondering, how to check whether the current ScrollView is scrollable? It seems that, there isn't public method called canScroll or isScrollable in ScrollView.
Scrollable : You can move the ViewGroup inside the ScrollView up and down, and the scroll bar will be visible when you move it up and down. So, if there is only little rows in the ScrollView, and they can fit inside single screen, ScrollView is not scrollable then.
You can do some little math to calculate the views raw height and the height of the content. If the difference of this heights is < 0 the view is scrollable.
To calculate the raw height you can use View.getMeasuredHeight().
Because ScrollView is a ViewGroup and has max one child, get the height of that child with ViewGroup.getChildAt(0).getHeight();
Use a ViewTreeObserver to get the heights, because it will be called at the moment the layout / view is changing the visibility, otherwise the heights could be 0.

I think I might be missing something, but shouldn't it be as simple as checking if
scrollView.getHeight() >= parentView.getMeasuredHeight()
you might actually need: scrollView.getChildAt(0).getHeight() and/or parentView.getHeight() instead, but the idea is the same.

Why getHeight() of a Viewgroup does not change

I have a LinearLayout (ViewGroup). And in my code, I have added a child view (another linear layout) to the LinearLayout. My question is why the LinearLayout 's getHeight() return the SAME value? On the phone, I do see my child linear layout is visible and is displayed correctly. But why the getHeight() does not return me the right value?
And I have looked at the source code of add() in ViewGroup. It does call 'requestLayout()' so I expect the getHeight() of the ViewGroup does get update correctly. Am I correct?
getHeight() is not updated immediately, requestLayout() requests a layout pass that happens later (it's asynchronous). You must post an event in the UI events queue to retrieve the height after the layotu pass:
requestLayout();

How to retrieve the dimensions of a view?

I have a view made up of TableLayout, TableRow and TextView. I want it to look like a grid. I need to get the height and width of this grid. The methods getHeight() and getWidth() always return 0. This happens when I format the grid dynamically and also when I use an XML version.

First I get a final reference to my TextView (to access in the onGlobalLayout() method). Next, I get the ViewTreeObserver from my TextView, and add an OnGlobalLayoutListener, overriding onGLobalLayout (there does not seem to be a superclass method to invoke here...) and adding my code which requires knowing the measurements of the view into this listener. All works as expected for me, so I hope that this is able to help.
I'll just add an alternative solution, override your activity's onWindowFocusChanged method and you will be able to get the values of getHeight(), getWidth() from there.

You are trying to get width and height of an elements, that weren't drawn yet.
If you use debug and stop at some point, you'll see, that your device screen is still empty, that's because your elements weren't drawn yet, so you can't get width and height of something, that doesn't yet exist.
And, I might be wrong, but setWidth() is not always respected, Layout lays out it's children and decides how to measure them (calling child.measure()), so If you set setWidth(), you are not guaranteed to get this width after element will be drawn.
What you need, is to use getMeasuredWidth() (the most recent measure of your View) somewhere after the view was actually drawn.
Look into Activity lifecycle for finding the best moment.

I believe a good practice is to use OnGlobalLayoutListener like this:

I tried to use onGlobalLayout() to do some custom formatting of a TextView, but as #George Bailey noticed, onGlobalLayout() is indeed called twice: once on the initial layout path, and second time after modifying the text.
View.onSizeChanged() works better for me because if I modify the text there, the method is called only once (during the layout pass). This required sub-classing of TextView, but on API Level 11+ View. addOnLayoutChangeListener() can be used to avoid sub-classing.
One more thing, in order to get correct width of the view in View.onSizeChanged(), the layout_width should be set to match_parent, not wrap_content.
Are you trying to get sizes in a constructor, or any other method that is run BEFORE you get the actual picture?
You won't be getting any dimensions before all components are actually measured (since your xml doesn't know about your display size, parents positions and whatever)
Try getting values after onSizeChanged() (though it can be called with zero), or just simply waiting when you'll get an actual image.
As F.X. mentioned, you can use an OnLayoutChangeListener to the view that you want to track itself

You can remove the listener in the callback if you only want the initial layout.

ViewTreeObserver and onWindowFocusChanged() are not so necessary at all.
If you inflate the TextView as layout and/or put some content in it and set LayoutParams then you can use getMeasuredHeight() and getMeasuredWidth().
BUT you have to be careful with LinearLayouts (maybe also other ViewGroups). The issue there is, that you can get the width and height after onWindowFocusChanged() but if you try to add some views in it, then you can't get that information until everything have been drawn. I was trying to add multiple TextViews to LinearLayouts to mimic a FlowLayout (wrapping style) and so couldn't use Listeners. Once the process is started, it should continue synchronously. So in such case, you might want to keep the width in a variable to use it later, as during adding views to layout, you might need it.
Even though the proposed solution works, it might not be the best solution for every case because based on the documentation for ViewTreeObserver.OnGlobalLayoutListener
Interface definition for a callback to be invoked when the global layout state or the visibility of views within the view tree changes.
which means it gets called many times and not always the view is measured (it has its height and width determined)
An alternative is to use ViewTreeObserver.OnPreDrawListener which gets called only when the view is ready to be drawn and has all of its measurements.

Height and width are zero because view has not been created by the time you are requesting it's height and width . One simplest solution is

This method is good as compared to other methods as it is short and crisp.
You should rather look at View lifecycle: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/view/View.html Generally you should not know width and height for sure until your activity comes to onResume state.

You can not get the height of a view in OnCreate (), onStart (), or even in onResume () for the reason that kcoppock responded
Simple Response: This worked for me with no Problem.
It seems the key is to ensure that the View has focus before you getHeight etc. Do this by using the hasFocus() method, then using getHeight() method in that order. Just 3 lines of code required.
