You need to at it to your View. Right now you are instantiating an EditText view but is not added to the layout View (LinearLayout, RelativeLayout, etc.) that your screen is rendering, thus making it not appearing.
To solve it, first you need to get your View using activity.findViewById, then you add the EditText view as a subview to it.
Adjust the position if needed.

Keyboard placement obscures view below EditText would like to keep visible

I have an activity that is basically a long form of entry fields.
On each row, I want to show a TextView to serve as hint text just below each EditText and I want the TextView to remain visible at all times when the user is entering data. Unfortunately, the soft keyboard obscures the hint text and always positions itself immediately below the EditText. Is there any technique that will allow the TextView below the EditText to also be visible when the soft keyboard appears and the contents are adjusted (via windowSoftInputMode=adjustResize|adjustPan), without having the user scroll ?
Vishavjeet got me on the right track in suggesting I scrolldown to reveal the view that may be overlapped by the keyboard. Below is a function similar to what I used to solve the problem. It can be called when the EditText above the TextView receives focus:

By understanding the problem more deeply, I think that you should add scroll programatically when user clicks on the Edittext. Here is the code to do that:

From my personal experience I think there is not such way to do that. The thing you can do is place the hint textview toRightOf the editext. Or Use modern Approach by using a Hint Placeholder on Edittext:
In XML, it's simply android:hint="someText"
Programatically you can use edittext.setHint(int);
pass R.string.somestring in above method.

Android Add Items One By One Into a LinearLayout

I'm new to Android and I'm trying to find out how to do that:
- I have an activity with a ScrollView and inside it I have a LinearLayout (R.id.my_layout)
- I nedd to add TextView programmatically so I'm doing this:
I load the main XML layout via seContentView, I refer to my LinearLayout inside the ScrollView as "mLayout" and so on.
I load a list of names from a file and with a function called populateList()I do:

The addRow() method just create a new LinearLayout (mRow), a TextView, 2 Button, add the TextView and the 2 Buttons to the LinearLayout, and then I use addView to add the new mRow to the mLayout.
Everything is working fine, but the ScrollView is shown only when i finished creating the list (so when the populateList() ends). What I would like to do is to show the rows one by one in sequence to give the activty a better look and a bit of animation.
Is there a way to do this?

Extend EditTextPreference and display the DialogMessage

I have extended EditTextPreference, but the Dialog Message won't display. This happens if I add the dialogMessage programatically or in the the preferences.xml.
Here is my onBindDialogView:

Is the dialog message really absent? It's probably there but its text color might make it less (or not) visible. (Or try to dismiss software keyboard). Try experimenting with dialog messages having a number of "\n" characters and see if that affects dialog layout. If so, it means the dialog message is actually there but camouflaged too well.
EditTextPreference brings a text view (in the preference_dialog_edittext.xml) that replaces the existing one (in the alert_dialog.xml) for the dialog message, but unfortunately with different text style, which might cause a visibility problem under certain themes. Even their sizes are different.
One solution might be to obtain the text color and size from the original text view to be replaced and apply them to the new one, but I would suggest retaining the original text view instead, because it's more likely to be visually consistent if there are any future UI changes. Try adding the following overrides

Auto-scrolling textview in Android

I've tried a lot of different ways, most of the suggestions found here, but none of them seems to work. What I'm trying to achieve is at chat area below my game area, a SurfaceView. It is supposed to scroll upwards as new lines are added to the textview.
At first, it looks like a really simple task, but having tried all kinds of suggestions, like a TextView in a ScrollView, like a TextView in a TableRow in a TableLayout in a ScrollView, and so on...I've still not made it happen. Of course this must be something easily achieved in Android, right??
The task is to display like 6 lines of text in the bottom of the screen, and as a new message is added last it should scroll the rest upwards, like a terminal window. The important thing is that it should add the latest message after the other and, when reached the bottom line, scroll the text upwards and add the new line(s) at the end.
Any kind of help or suggestions would be highly appreciated!!
I needed the same behavior in one of my apps and I achieved in just with one command:
view.setGravity(Gravity.BOTTOM);
Or, analogously, setting this attribute in your layout:
android:gravity="bottom"
Then simply add your lines using:
your_text_view.append(newLine);
Suppose, you declared your ScrollView as follows...

Now, create a method to perform scroll down when you call the method. Inside the method implement a thread which will do the scroll down independently. And call the method after every chat message update thats will do the auto-srcoll functionality.

I've achieved this (crudely!) by maintaining my own list, deleting the lowest element then adding at the end each time. Here i've just got a 3 line window:

Creating custom components using regular android components

basically I want to encapsulate a simple component from code that I already have.
Basically it's a LinearLayout with buttons inside. These buttons will make changes to a ListView, and there is also some other small stuff that it will do.
Currently I have a XML layout with those, and I programmatically setup everything else: the buttons, the interaction between the list and the other small stuff.
Obviously I thought to myself, let's encapsulate this.
I started out trying to extend the LinearLayout and adding the buttons.
Already I have no idea how to inflate the buttons to add to the view
What method do I override to create this buttons just before the view gets created without messing with the measures and inflations, etc.
I've looked around but the custom components I see are either completely new components or components that simply add small functionality to the custom ones.
Is there some guidelines for doing this?
Good tutorials/examples?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks !

Okay, here is a little more specific stuff.
Basically I want to create a View that holds filter buttons for a ListView. This will be used in different places with different filters, so I need flexibility for the buttons.
Basically I'd like to do something like this:
