We have an app named "The Right Words". But it's package name is "ru.lextre.poetizr". Does it harm us when users search for our app in Play Store? I understand that the user-readable name is kinda generic, but at least it should appear quite high when searching for quoted string, shouldn't it? Right now, it appears somewhere in the middle of results, and if the search string is unquoted, it does not appear at all.
For example, The Real World app, which is also kinda generic, appears high in search for their name, despite having almost zero downloads.
Google Play makes it possible to search by package name. But I don't think it matters for search rankings.
If you have just released your app Google Play needs some time for indexing. But searching by package name works just after a new release.
Things that really matters are keywords in title and description, number of given user ratings and its score, amount of downloads and uninstalls.

After a long time in Beta, my app is now ready for publishing. I published it about an hour ago. It is named Colors, a very short and often used name. So that is also the title in Google Play. But now when I search for Colors my App isn't shown when I search for Colors (not in all findings (about 100)). It is there because when I also search with the developer name it comes up at place 8 or so. What to do now? Change the name or add something in it?
What would you suggest?
Here are the steps to find your app:
Go to the app console at https://play.google.com/apps/publish
Choose your app
Hover the icon with the "I" letter in the circle beside your app name
Click "View in the Play Store"
Note, that your app needs to be published (as on the attached screen).
Moreover, your app may not be published immediately and probably you need to wait about a few hours until your app will be officialy available in Google Play Store.
It may be not so easy to find your app via search if it has popular or common name. I such case, Google algorithms may adjust search results depending on a different criteria. When your app is new, it may not be recognizable in the beginning.
Firstly: If you published your app a short time ago, it is going to rank lower in searches. Give it a while, because the search feature is like google: It shows the most popular links with the same name first. It is the same thing with apps: The most popular with a given name rank first. FOr new apps, even when searching that name, similar names will rank higher because your app is newer.
Writing
pub:[Your Dev Name Here]
(without the brackets)
will show only the apps published by you. No space between : and the first letter in the developer name.
TL:DR;
The more downloads your app gets, the higher it will rank in searches. Changing the app name is not a good idea, as you will then take another long while to rank in the search for the new app name. Maintain the current name, make it good so it drives installs and it will rank higher eventually
NOTE
It takes hour before the app shows in the search results. Meaning as you posted your app one hour ago, it will not rank for another day or so(in my experience). Getting it on top when there are many apps with similar names is even harder. But what you are experiencing is the time between your app being published and it showing in the search results.
No One knows search algorithm parameters except people at Google.
But there are a lot of articles with suggestions, and what parameters influence to the position in Google Play. First of all this is popularity of your app, its score, etc. So changing app name won't affect, while you have few downloads.
For instance, I uploaded an app, named TurtleInfo. I haven't seen apps with the same name, but as soon as my app is too specific and has less than 50 downloads, Google Play search displays my app on position about 20. The apps, that goes before, just different games about Turtles, that has much more downloads than mine.
So if you wanna see your app first in search result on Google Play, you have to make it high-quality and really popular!

write your package name in front of id. and you'll get your app
I uploaded my app to PlayMarket a week ago, but it still can be found by name only. My app about cocktails and drinking. I trying to find it with many keywords like "cocktail", "alcohol", "spirit", "drink", but it never been found. All these words are present in the description of the application. PlayMarket founds apps about drinks and cocktails, but not mine one.
When I putting App name in search box - application is displayed in the results. Alone.
What is more - my app don't have any "similar apps", although there are any.
Why it happening? And what can I do to solve this problem?
Excuse me for my bad english and thanks for answers!
Here is some info on how to help optimize your listing for the search engine. I believe the reason why your app does not show when searching for those keywords is because all the other apps have such a higher weight/rank, which subsequently pushes your app further in the search results listing. This is probably the case if you can find your app with those keywords after scrolling through several pages. Also, I believe the "similar apps" is determined, not by keywords, but by users and what other applications they have viewed/downloaded as well as the genre/category of the listing. As far as what you can do, I think the best option would be to market it on your own. With more reviews and downloads, it will rise up in the search ranks.
You are definitely not right, this is easiest answer I got the same answer from google. First of all I'm not sure but I think google can put some kinda app ban, basically you have app in google play market but nobody can find it.
Now let's look deeper, I have experience with this, I got 3 apps terminated and one time account ban falcely, so basically I wake up and I didn't not see any apps by keywords on night I got termination, so google puts automatically some ban and then bands really later.
I had dating app, I got 100 000 downloads 500+ reviews I ranked it and then google terminated it, in my opinion falsely but they saying their story.
So I reuploaded agan my app and started from nothing whit my sistem, after 3 days ago I got to 22 place whit my keywords I whose very happy, so next day I didn't saw my app anivere, so now it is 143 place in socal apps but it is still not ranked by keyword and there is not similar apps in right side just waiting and hoping it will sort out but I thing nothing will sort out because google is not happy when you are not paing to adwords and ranking by some systems, why google's no1 enemy is seo? Because google lose money by it, the same is here.
I'm in the same boat. My app was in the top 5 search results for specific keywords over 2 months. Suddenly my revenue dropped and I didn't know why. One month after this drop I realized that my app isn't listed when searching for these keywords I was listed before. I contacted a google employee and he told me that my store listing or my app content is marked as inappropriate to child under 10. So my app is rated for an age of 12 in my distribution countries. I included some jokes with rude humour and this is why my app must be for an audience older than 12. So now I'm fighting to get my app back to the charts when searching the keywords. I change the short description, the longer description and even the rude jokes in the app. Nothing! I asked the google employee for more information as it is important for me as I must feed some mouths. Only answer that I'm getting is always the same robot like answer: Your app is marked inappropriate... As I'm a developer willing to change everything so my app comes up in the search results again I'm really disapointed by the developer support. I know the AdWords support which is really great but if you are a developer you're lost with yourself.
I can imagine that your app contains some words the crawler does not like and so you are never going to be listed...
It would have been enough when google just sends out a message to those whose app is marked as inappropriate so they can change something but google just is doing this process silently.
If you have any news on your issue please give me an update as I also want to solve this matter.
Perhaps my answer got you in the right direction so you can also "try" to do something even if you don't really know what to do.
Google automatically picks up keyword from your title and app description. However, adding something like Keywords: keyword1, keyword2, keyword3 to your description is considered keyword spamming by Google, especially if you add the title, or the developer name of a competing app. Instead, try to include your keywords in the description in a natural manner.
I recently upload my app to the Google Play Store. I'm able to view my app in store by clicking from the developer's console. However, when I try to search the app myself by typing the name of the app it won't show up. I know this question has been raised many times, but I didn't really find a solution for this problem. The name of the app is called "Auto Reply Text Message".
I guess what I want to ask is that if it is possible to allow the user to find the app without putting the quotations around the name or removing all the spaces between?
Thank you in advanced.
so I called Google yesterday, and below are their response:
"
Thank you for your reply and your question about Google Play search.
When searching on Google Play, application search works across title, publisher and app descriptions. It's not easy to refine the search results appropriately when it comes to generic words that may also happen to be brand names or titles. For example, when a user searches for "Color Game", it's difficult to tell if the user is searching for an app named "Color Game" or for a game about colors. Because of this, we cannot guarantee that every app will display in search results for its name.
Please note, we show a limited number of search results in Google Play to ensure the best user experience. If your app's search rank for a specific term is too low, your app will not display in results. Keep in mind, however, that your app is always available by direct link (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cle.app.auto.reply.text.message), which you can share with users as you actively market your app. You can also recommend users search for your app’s name in quotes (i.e. "app name") to have our search engine look for that exact combination of words.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support. If you have additional questions, please let me know.
"
So basically it has to do with their searching algorithm. I guess if your app has been downloaded for many times and becomes a popular app, Google will make your app a special case for searching and allow other people to search for your app without the quotations.
Thank you andrew for helping.
I'm a new android app developer and I just published my first app 3 days ago.
When I search for my app with one more of the words that are in the title (of the app) I can barely find my app in the list!
Yes, I searched for this a lot over the Internet and I saw in other places people talking about the search algorithm decides by downloads, rating and +1s. I have the best rating, a lot of reviews, okay amount of downloads and I see apps with no downloads, no rating, small description, show up above me in the list.
So my questions are: Am I missing something here? Why is my app so low in the list? Does the search update every week or so?
hey use this link to find app only put app package name here
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=packagename&hl=en
only replace packagename to your app package name
then you find app
or search by Developer name....
There is the following strange problem: I've published some app on Google Play, for example "My Horse" (2 words in name). But if I search my app as "My Horse" I can't find it! If I use "myhorse" (as a single word) all is good. As I know I use "My Horse" in all settings in the developer's console and Android string resources. How can I fix it?
Unlike iOS in android you have no control over the keywords, just make sure your app description contain the keywords and the Console Search engine will take care of everything magically.
If you recently submitted your app, then give it time, it will show in your search results.
In addition to #meda points, I would say The ranking algorithm doesn't order the results only by app names, it also includes app ratings, relevant keywords in your description ,number of downloads, Star rating, Speed of downloads vs release date and probably some other stuff.
