I have been struggling for this minor thing in Android Studio for few hours. I am not sure if it's a bug or a new feature in Android studio 2.3.3.
I can't see the classes that i have opened. They were appearing fine before,I didn't update the studio or did any other thing intentionally.
Expected Result:
Current Screen:
P.S: The second screen shot is from linux as i am currently working on linux. It was working fine before.
Your set tab visibility none, so you can change visibility by
press
Ctrl + Shift + A
then write tabs placements and then you find tabs placements top is off so press to On.
You can see the tabs.;)
this is the simple way to do that
go to
Window -> Editor Tabs -> Tabs placement -> set to Top

Basically every time i try to Select Button or anything that extends Button (AppCompatButton, MaterialButton)
Android studio freezes for few seconds when selecting Button in layout editor. every other component works normally (i think so).
On new project this behavior is not present.
p.s. 3.5.{latest} also had this issue but it was less annoying since xml editor and layout editor was two separate things.
Simply putting marker on anything that is inside xml button declaration (in my layout) causes this lag of (3-4 seconds). In that period of time i can't use Android studio at all.
So my question is what could cause such behavior and how could i avoid it?
Anyone facing AS freeze while editing XML or editing Material components like Button, do the following steps:
Open Layout Editor -> Click on Attributes Tab -> Settings Icon -> Will show list of options, disable all options with "Attributes", like "All Attributes", "Common Attributes", "Declared Attributes"
Will solve the issue for now.
UPDATE:
Issue is already reported and AS team is working on the fix:
https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/139716861
Actual fix requires new AS release or 4.1 canary 10 (as per AS Team comment).
It's quite annoying since upgrading to Android Studio 3.0.1 such that the "Back/Forward" buttons are not displayed in tool bar at the top in IDE any more. I know, I can select "Navigation-> Back/Forward", but obviously, it's very annoying if you Back/Forward frequently; Also, the short cut by keys are not looking a good choice for my situation. I want to show those 2 button in the IDE,or say, I prefer to click around with MICE! Digging around the settings in IDE and seemed not able to figure out how to achieve this SIMPLE goal. Any hints/help will be highly appreciated.
To me, removing those simple buttons dramatically reduces the usability of the IDE!
Thanks,
In my Android Studio 3.0.1 installation, the buttons you seek are already in the main toolbar (see where the red arrow points):
To configure the contents of the toolbars, right-click over an open area in the toolbar panel and choose "Customize Menus and Toolbars..." from the context menu:
That will bring up a dialog where you can see the contents of the main toolbar and manipulate those contents:
In Android Studio 3.3 Canary 13:
Open View and then click Toolbar if it is unchecked. You will now get your toolbar with back and forward navigate buttons.
Best of Luck!
Click on "View" option in android studio(in top bar) and then click on "Toolbar" option.
From Android Studio 4.0 you can go at the menu: View -> Appearance -> Toolbar
For me it was simply going to the View tab and make sure Toolbar is checked. Voila! Friendly arrows back.
credit to #cro comment how to show Back/Forward buttons in Android Studio 3.0.1 IDE
In Windows, just go to View> Appearance> Make sue Toolbar is checked. This is as per AS version 3.6.3
Eesy. View -> Appearance -> Toolbar. For Android Studio 4.2
Let use shortcut, if you use Ubuntu Linux, go setting --> keyboard --> navigation, change shortcut ctrl + alt + left/right to other. Default on AS is ctrl + alt + left
Simple step you can find in screenshot.
Just we need to enable toolbar
Is there any way that I can quickly see how my view is going to look in different scales? On Xcode there is a preview feature in storyboard mode, just checking if there is anything like that but in Android Studio or even third party...
Thanks in advance, any help/suggestion/pro-tip ;) is appreciated
There is menu called "Layout validation" where you can preview all the screen on Android studio 4.0.
I assume you know to go to the xml file and open the design tab of the layout . and now you can see only single preview of the layout in device.
Then look to your top bar on the design window which contains app theme , the android version and device name. (below is a screen shot).
Now all you have to do is open the drop down which contains device names (in my screen shot Nexus 4) and go to bottom . you will see preview all screens . this will show all the screen preview.
Hope this solves your problem.
"Layout validation" tool window rely on context to be visible
Android Studio Chipmunk | 2021.2.1
in text editor mode layout validation is not visible at the very right of the ide
But if you are in design mode and working on a layout (not a path nor icon ) . Layout validation will appear in between gradle and device manager tools
Now you can work with layout validation tool window .
Multi Preview, which is like this, is a feature of Android Studio 3.6+
I'm wondering if anyone knows how to open two windows of Android Studio with both having the same project. I know you can drag tabs out, but that allows you to only edit that one file. I want two fully-featured windows with each being able to see the Project Files/Structure.
I don't want to just split the editor, I want a separate window.
I want two of these windows, with both "looking" at the same project:
I don't want another one of these windows, as I can't view the project structure and change that, and it's hard to change it to a different file in this view:
Right click on tab of the file and click "Split vertical / Horizontal"
After splitting, you can just drag one of the tab titles to the second monitor - it will open up a new window. You can then edit the same file in two separate windows
If you click and drag a file's tab out of your current window (over onto the desktop, for example), the file will open in a new window. However, this window doesn't seem to have the whole package explorer, console etc.
Although, if you click on the gear on any of the modules, you can uncheck 'pinned' mode and you'll be free to move them around your two monitors just like the window you created above.
Window -> Editor Tabs -> Split Vertically
if you don't use files tabs
If you want to split tabs of android studio project beetween monitors, you can rigthclick to tab(project, debug, terminal etc) and check the "floating mode" option.
See the image: Floating mode tab option
After that you can drag this tab between your monitors as new window.
Could you just make a copy of android studio & run it side / side? You can run different versions of android studio side/side.. Maybe that is an option.
Just drag the tab outside the current window.
right click on tab and click on windowed mode, it will open up a new window.
One hacky way of doing this (but you will not be able to save in the same project) is to make a copy of the project folder and open it in Android Studio.
How can I enable the text/design Tab on the a src/main/res/layout folder on the activity_main.xml file that was created automatically during create new project? If i do right click and create xml file on the said folder, the design/text tab exist. Any suggestion? Thanks.
No Text/Design Tab on the Bottom Part of the Android Studio
Creating a new XML in the Res/Layout Folder, the design/text tab is now present.
Any help? this is super weird guys...
In Android Studio 3.6 use these three buttons (Code | Split | Design), on top right, to switch between views.
I had the same problem, restarting the IDE did make that tab appear again.
On Android Studio 3.6.1
Top Right corner under the main toolbar you have three different icons (Code, Split, Design).
View -> Tool windows -> Preview .
Output view:
use the three buttons (Code|Split|Design)on top right hand side to switch between views.
I also had this problem after upgrading to 1.5. None of the above suggestions worked for me. I noticed that the default relative layout xml has changed with a third xmlns line and an app behavior line. I opened an older project and copied the old relative layout header to replace the new. Instantly the preview function was restored.
You can also Move between Design / Text tabs in layout’s view with simple shortcut:
(Mac) : control + shift + ← / →
(Windows / Linux): alt + shift + ← / →
On the top right corner of the activity_main.xml file view, there are 3 icons representing "Code", "Split" and "Design". Click on the leftmost icon of the three ("Code") for the text tab.
In the android Studio window, at the left side there are two options available(Project and Resource Manager). Go to resource and there you will see an ADD Module option, click on that. After this you will see your text and design option will get enabled, you can go to your work area by Project Name->app ->src ->main->res ->layout.
Yes, Even I had the same problem. For the first time... I think It wont show, restarting the IDE did make that tab appear again.
I had this problem too, I deleted all the preference files, such as the AndroidStudioPreview folder & com.google.android.studio.plist, then restarted android studio, it worked.
You do not need to restart an IDE. All you need is to close an xml file that does not get a tab and reopen it within an editor. It is a little bug.
Navigate to activity_main.xml tab then Design and Text tab appears.
It doesn't appear in MainActivity.java tab.
You do not need to restart IDE.
If text/design tab is missing in new android studio, this can solve by two methods.
You have re-install android studio. And don't forget to delete android studio related all files from temp and local.
Or you can re-install SDK (software development kit) according to your device.
