I'm wondering if anyone knows how to open two windows of Android Studio with both having the same project. I know you can drag tabs out, but that allows you to only edit that one file. I want two fully-featured windows with each being able to see the Project Files/Structure.
I don't want to just split the editor, I want a separate window.
I want two of these windows, with both "looking" at the same project:
I don't want another one of these windows, as I can't view the project structure and change that, and it's hard to change it to a different file in this view:
Right click on tab of the file and click "Split vertical / Horizontal"
After splitting, you can just drag one of the tab titles to the second monitor - it will open up a new window. You can then edit the same file in two separate windows
If you click and drag a file's tab out of your current window (over onto the desktop, for example), the file will open in a new window. However, this window doesn't seem to have the whole package explorer, console etc.
Although, if you click on the gear on any of the modules, you can uncheck 'pinned' mode and you'll be free to move them around your two monitors just like the window you created above.
Window -> Editor Tabs -> Split Vertically
if you don't use files tabs
If you want to split tabs of android studio project beetween monitors, you can rigthclick to tab(project, debug, terminal etc) and check the "floating mode" option.
See the image: Floating mode tab option
After that you can drag this tab between your monitors as new window.
Could you just make a copy of android studio & run it side / side? You can run different versions of android studio side/side.. Maybe that is an option.
Just drag the tab outside the current window.
right click on tab and click on windowed mode, it will open up a new window.
One hacky way of doing this (but you will not be able to save in the same project) is to make a copy of the project folder and open it in Android Studio.

I am using the latest version of Android Studio. Every time I close Android Studio or start debugging/executing the project, the "Project Files" tree collapses.
Is there a setting to keep the tree expanded in the current state or to expand the whole tree again?
Don't use Project Files section. Use Android or just Project sections. They shouldn't collapse.
PS: Also Command+1 is the shortcut to open Project page.
Very annoying. You can solve it by clicking the gear icon, and select Autoscroll from source. Then, anytime you select a tab, it will expand and select the file in the tree view.
This worked for me:
Expand the packages
Click gear icon at the top
Untick Compact Middle Packages
I'm using IntelliJ Android-Studio 0.8.2 and i'd like to know if it's possible to open the code by default when editing XML files?
Opening multiple files always shows Design tab, while opening single files, though, it sometimes opens them in Text tab but sometimes not.
Is there any way to set the default tab to Text ? It's pretty annoying as I rarely use the Design tab. Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about:
Newer (I guess 2.x+) versions of Android Studio have this option in the main settings:
Open the settings with one of the following actions:
Press Ctrl+Alt+S.
On the main menu, choose File | Settings for Windows and Linux or IntelliJ IDEA | Preferences for OS X
Press Ctrl+Shift+A, type settings and press Enter.
Then navigate to the following sub-menu:
Editor -> Layout Editor -> "Prefer XML editor"
This has been added in the newest release of Android Studio (0.8.12).
Other features of the new release can be found here.
Here is the screen shot of the latest version

UPDATE 2021
Using Android Studio Artic Fox 2020.3.1 it's Design Tools in Settings Menu (CtrlAltS) instead of Layout Editor:
In case of Android Studio 4.0 use Split OR Code button to view it.
Since in the new update, the feature of viewing the code of XML has changed, there are some series of steps that are needed to be followed.
Step 1: Press Ctrl + Alt + S (Basically opening settings)
Step 2:Click on the layout editor and choose the default Editor mode as you wish. In my case I want it to be in split mode (You will be able to see both code and its output at the same screen or window).
Step 3: Click on Apply and OK.
Step 4: Close all the opened XML or the design files . Now after this step , if you open any other file present at your project, you would be realizing that the mode in which the file is opened is at the mode you chose at the Step 2 .
Mac
Android Studio > Preferences > Editor > Layout Editor
change to the view as per your desire.
Also you can switch between views Using Cmd + Shift + Left/Right Arrow
In the new Android Studio 4.1 this option is somewhat changed to :
To access this visit
Android Studio -> Preference from the menu bar search for design and select layout editor and change the mode to your desired one.
Thanks
The Android Designer editor always opens files in the "Design" mode by default. Once you have it open you can switch to "Text" mode and it will retain that setting for that file. However, there's no option to have it default to opening XML files in "Text" mode.
How can I enable the text/design Tab on the a src/main/res/layout folder on the activity_main.xml file that was created automatically during create new project? If i do right click and create xml file on the said folder, the design/text tab exist. Any suggestion? Thanks.
No Text/Design Tab on the Bottom Part of the Android Studio
Creating a new XML in the Res/Layout Folder, the design/text tab is now present.
Any help? this is super weird guys...
In Android Studio 3.6 use these three buttons (Code | Split | Design), on top right, to switch between views.
I had the same problem, restarting the IDE did make that tab appear again.
On Android Studio 3.6.1
Top Right corner under the main toolbar you have three different icons (Code, Split, Design).
View -> Tool windows -> Preview .
Output view:
use the three buttons (Code|Split|Design)on top right hand side to switch between views.
I also had this problem after upgrading to 1.5. None of the above suggestions worked for me. I noticed that the default relative layout xml has changed with a third xmlns line and an app behavior line. I opened an older project and copied the old relative layout header to replace the new. Instantly the preview function was restored.
You can also Move between Design / Text tabs in layout’s view with simple shortcut:
(Mac) : control + shift + ← / →
(Windows / Linux): alt + shift + ← / →
On the top right corner of the activity_main.xml file view, there are 3 icons representing "Code", "Split" and "Design". Click on the leftmost icon of the three ("Code") for the text tab.
In the android Studio window, at the left side there are two options available(Project and Resource Manager). Go to resource and there you will see an ADD Module option, click on that. After this you will see your text and design option will get enabled, you can go to your work area by Project Name->app ->src ->main->res ->layout.
Yes, Even I had the same problem. For the first time... I think It wont show, restarting the IDE did make that tab appear again.
I had this problem too, I deleted all the preference files, such as the AndroidStudioPreview folder & com.google.android.studio.plist, then restarted android studio, it worked.
You do not need to restart an IDE. All you need is to close an xml file that does not get a tab and reopen it within an editor. It is a little bug.
Navigate to activity_main.xml tab then Design and Text tab appears.
It doesn't appear in MainActivity.java tab.
You do not need to restart IDE.
If text/design tab is missing in new android studio, this can solve by two methods.
You have re-install android studio. And don't forget to delete android studio related all files from temp and local.
Or you can re-install SDK (software development kit) according to your device.
I'm watching a video from Google I/O on a way to create an android app by dragging and dropping elements onto the eclipse window. Example: if you want a button, you just drag a button onto the screen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oq05KqjXTvs # 0:07:25
I've downloaded JDK, Android SDK, and the ADT Plugin, but, I cannot figure out how to get to the place where I can drag 'n' drop controls into my app. In Eclipse, after configuring the ADT Plugin, I went to File -> New -> Project -> Android Project, and I do not see a panel on the left with a list of controls.
Am I missing something? Thanks.
You can only drag and drop on to layout files (.xml). Now that you have created a new project, you will have automatically created the default main.xml. This will be in the res\layout folder as shown in the project explorer view. If you click on that you will get two tabs for editing it, one is plain text, the other is the graphical view - this is where you drag widgets to.
The screen that you referred to is what you see when you work with the layout file. Create a new class and create a layout for it. Select the layout then you can drag and drop.
Havent seen the video , but after you create a project you will have to go to res->layout->click on xml file. The editor for xml file has a tab called graphical Layout. You can drag and drop controls in this editor
I thought ADT should come with a visual editor for building GUI : Easy way to build Android UI?
However, I just cannot find it. I was wondering where is the Visual Editor for Eclipse with the ADT plugin.
I can run HelloWorld application without problem. However, whenever I click on main.xml at the left navigation tree layout folder, here is what I get. What I wish to get is a WYSIWYG editor.
Select your main.xml file. At the bottom of eclipse you can see a Layout tab, click on it and eclipse will open the android gui editor.
As Paul Kearny previously noted, to resolve issue with seeing "Design" tab instead of "Graphical Layout" follow these 2 steps:
1) Delete project from the left of the screen, without deleting the source files
2) File -> Import -> Existing Projects into Workspace, browse and select your workspace folder and open your project
Graphical Layout problem fixed!
If you want to edit the layout visually, rather than through XML, click on the Layout tab at the bottom left of the main.xml window (in your screenshot, just above Problems).
Also note, there are issues with displaying some of the widgets. For example, the ListView does not render. So, my hint is to change ListView to just a View, then work out the details of the layout so you can get the colors, relative-ness, etc. Then switch it back to ListView. There is one other widget that I cannot recall off the top of my head ...
To resolve issue with seeing "Design" tab instead of "Layout" or "Graphic Layout", I had to:
1. Delete the project from Eclipse without deleting the source
2. Shut down and restart Eclipse
3. Import the project back in
You could probably skip step 2, but I did it just to make sure.
Hope this helps anyone else who has the same issue.
If your view is showing Design|Source for the .xml file right click on the main.xml and select open with - android common XML editor. Simple.
If it is happening to one particular xml, you can delete the file (make sure you copy the content first), create new xml and paste the content again.
I recommend that any serious Android developer stay far, far away from Eclipse/ADT Design View. This is a time-wasting tool that sorely lacks the attention it would need from Google to make it worth serious consideration. It doesn't render the views as a real device would. There is no way to bind dynamic data. Does it work with fragments (I think not)? For it to work properly and have useful features would weigh down Eclipse further and make it unacceptably slow. In my very humble opinion, the entire strategy for ADT's ui-design tools has failed.
Thus, the recommendation is: edit Android XML layout files by hand and use the only reliable testing mechanism you have for layouts: actual devices. You can always fallback on the emulator - but the emulator performs 50x - 100x slower than an actual device. I'm not exaggerating. Pick your poison!
new fix, took me forever to get this fixed, really simple....delete the xml file and undo the deletion (ctrl+z), double click and there you go. Hope this helps someone as it did me. No shut down required.
If you see "Design" tab instead of "Graphical layout", just close the project and open it again.
