I have developed an application using Android SDK 1.5, application works well on Android Simulator.
Now, I am trying to install application on actual device. I don't have the Android device. So, I am going by OTA way.
For this, I have generated the self sign keystore using keytool utility.
And, using Eclipse's "Eclipse Signed Application package.." option I have generated the signed .apk file and moved it to my web server.
Also, i added MIME type on web server for .apk.
But, when I am trying to download and install the same application on device, application get downloaded and it also prompts for permission. After thag when I click on "Install", it fails with error Application Install Unsuccefull.
Interestingly, I test this url on simulator browser, and it worked perfectly well and application get installed successfully.
Even, I checked that, SDCard is there on device. Settings -> Applications and "Unknown sources" option is alos checked.
Am I clear to you all?
Any Idea what may be going wrong here?
Thanks and appreciate your response,
S.Satheesh
What happens if connect the phone via a USB cable and install the application using the adb install command? Testing this will allow you to determine if the problem is with the package or the over the air update.
Also, you could try running adb logcat to view the logs from your phone after the failed install as this should show you what the problem is.

As I have stated in the title I'm struggling with .apk I cannot install application on my phone I'm getting app not installed. But when installing via usb I'm able to install application on the emulator phone. It’s always showing App Not Installed on mobile phone.
When I run application via AndroidStudio to USB the application has been installed. I do not know where I should looking for issues. May be someone had the similat issue.
There are two things you can try:
First of all build your apk by Build/Build Bundles/Build APK and not just by creating apk as a side effect of simply running the app under Android Studio
Make sure no other flavors are installed on your device - sometimes devices offer "Uninstall for all users" - that's what you should be looking for.
App works fine in emulator. I also emailed myself the apk and installed it on my phone, and it works fine.
When I run cordova run android on my laptop it says it installs it correctly (lie) and then launches it successfully (true).
It never copies it from my laptop to the phone.
How can I fix this? How can I debug this?
Is there some app id or app name I need to change? Where?
Phone is 4.1.1 , do I need to specify a target level?
USB debug is on on phone, as well as allowing apps from unknown sources.
If all else fails, how can I copy the apk easily to my phone?
It's bizarre but adb install my.apk works just fine but cordova run android doesn't work at all.
Otherwise, you can install a file browser app on your phone. Copy apk to USB storage on phone, then install via file browser.
I'm working on developing my first mobile app on the Appery.io platform. I'm just about done building the app and need to beta test it for Android.
Appery lets you generate an Android certificate and export your app as a .apk file. I have my .apk file and I want to install it on my friend's phone. Is there anything else I need to do or can I install the .apk file? How do I go about actually getting it installed on the phone? It's not clear from the site's instructions how to do it when using a platform that generates the .apk file for you.
The easiest solution is to email the APK file to your friend. Then click on the attachment on your friend's phone. Alternatively, you can install the Android SDK and use its adb tool.
You can send it via Bluetooth or Share it on Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. When you install the app be sure that in the phone settings the "Install apps from unknown publisher" is checked. And don't verify the app with google play. Just click package installer.
There are several ways to install apk like:
send apk as attachment to your friend and open the attachment on their device.
copy the apk to their device and open it using any file manager, it will lead to install it.
send apk whiya bluetooth/ wifi tethering etc and open it on their device.
upload it to any file hosting website and open that link in their device using any web browser and download and install further.
if that device is with you, you can use adb.exe tool with following command "adb install your apkfile"
Note: but to use any of these ways, their device should have enabled "Install from Unknown sources" in their device settings->security.
Or alternately best approach:
upload your apk to GooglePlay Store and they can install it from there hassle free.
My app able run on simulator and I export it as Unsigned App.
On my phone's Setting-->>Applications--->>Unknown sources checked.
I download the .apk into phone storage through USB.
Then under File Manager, I found that stored .apk and hit install button and it try to install,
But finally it says Application Not installed. but why? wht's wrong?
Also I try ./adb install -r myapp.apk but it said error:device not found
I have never tested an app on a device by using your method... When I am NOT debugging on my device using usb and I just want to install it on my phone, I do the following:
If you have run it on the emulator then there is an .apk file in the bin directory of your project.
Move that .apk to your phone via usb or another method (I use dropbox).
Open the .apk and install on your phone.
The previous answers are correct, it must be signed. But by doing my method it will be signed with your debug key.
You will obviously want to actually sign it with a real key before publishing it to the market.
All applications must be signed in order to install on emulator or real device, check out the official dev guide signing your application:
All applications must be signed. The system will not install an
application on an emulator or a device if it is not signed.
To test and debug your application, the build tools sign your application with a special debug key that is created by the Android
SDK build tools.
Specifically how are you getting the APK to the device? Try dab install <path to APK>. Also, you can install APKs from the Android browser by uploading it to any web server and navigating to its URL.
You must export and sign with a debug certificate before installing. Read about publishing.
If you are using Eclipse, you don't need to export your app as "unsigned apk". Simply enable "Allow Unknown Sources" on the phone, and right click on project and hit "Run As".
Unsigned apks are generated by signing them with the debug.keystore key that's stored in the Android SDK. It could be possible that his key is corrupted. To verify, check to see if any other project also gives a similar problem. To resolve th key corruption, delete your SDK and install again (shouldn't take more than 15mins).
In case other projects work fine, which means your debug.keystorekey is NOT corrupt, you need to uninstall any previous versions of this app on your phone and restart your phone.
It could also be possible that the adb server could be messed up. In that case, restart your Eclipse or do adb kill-server from command line.
Also, seems like other people have faced similar issues. Did you search similar StackOverflow questions and try out the solutions? Here's one: 'App not Installed' Error on Android
Unsigned APK can be installed in real mobile devices for purpose of testing.
Just follow these steps on images:
Locate the APK and send it to your mobile through gmail etc..
i developed a application and it works fine on the emulator, so tried to install it on my phone using a .apk of the file
(NOTE: It is a unSigned one).
on installing the app on the phone, during installation i get a error as installation failed.
(NOTE: Other applications from the market are installing without any errors, the ones downloaded from the internet are working fine, but one developed by me aren't)
tried to debug the application on my phone using USB debugging.
the app gets installed fine by USB debugging.
Still can't figure out how to install using the .apk file.
Thanks in advance. :)
You have to sign your application if you do not want to install it using adb. If you use Eclipse and ADT just click on your project folder, choose Android tools -> Export Signed Application Package. Then provide access (or create new) to your keystore file and choose key. After you've signed an application you can, for instance, send it by email and install it on a real smartphone.
What you can also do is copy the .apk to the phone via the ISB cable into the sim card out the SD card. Then you don't have to send any emails to yourself.
