RelativeLayout - positioning a View under a ViewGroup - android

I have the following structure defined in an xml layout file.
<RelativeLayout android:id="#+id/mainLayout"
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<FrameLayout android:id="#+id/frame" android:layout_centerInParent="true" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" ></FrameLayout>
<Button android:id="#+id/button" android:layout_below="#id/frame" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
</RelativeLayout>
The FrameLayout is positioned correctly in the center of its parent. But the Button isn't getting positioned under it. Instead it's displaying in the top left corner.
Am I doing something incorrectly or is this a bug with RelativeLayout?

How have you checked whether frame layout is in the center of parent or not ?
Try adding some view inside frame layout or give some fix height and width to it. It might solve the problem.

How to use Horizontal ScrollView With one Fixed layout positioned at center?

I wanna implement the horizontal layout with fixed layout that is positioned at center. But the problem is that when i kept the layout at the center the horizontal scrollview child layout will be overlap by the fixed layout that i have kept on center. How to separate the space on horizontal scroll view so that while scrolling the scrollview child will jump the the space that we have define and position at the right and left of the center layout.

You can make use of FRAME layout, keep imageview gravity at center - rest of the horizontal scrollview as it is.

I have needed to create view like and this view will be placed like
I am trying to create this using frame layout but finish with failure. How can i do this?
Either use a FrameLayout and add this as an imageview last with specified right and top layout margins for this view and some slightly larger right margins for the underlying layout.
Or a RelativeLayout and you align this view to the parent right using (layout_alignParentRight="true") and with margins as with previous example.

View not taking the same height as parent RelativeLayout

I'm trying to achieve the layout on the right of the image below. What I am currently getting is on the left.
Here is my layout:

The RelativeLayout is used as an item template for a GridView. garment_grid_item_image is being populated in code. garment_grid_item_on_loan is the purple triangle in the top right whose visibility is controlled in code.
The View at the bottom uses a 9 patch and it is the one I'm having trouble with. I want it to be as tall as the parent RelativeLayout but neither match_parent or fill_parent work. What can I do to get it to work?
I've just tried your layout with some similar images and it works fine when set as the root element in an Activity.
It could be to do with your RelativeLayout having wrap_content as its size, with the child Views not specifying a size to wrap. Try specifying a fixed size just to see if the problem goes away, then go from there.

centerHorizontal does not centre the image correctly

The center button is centered, but not in the real center of the screen, but rather approx 50px to the right of the center. If I remove centerHorizontal CENTER01, then this does not happen.

This issue may be due to using of both Relative Layout and Linear Layout inside a xml file.
Change all Linear Layout to Relative Layouts so that Image View will be centered as you expected.
I too mingled both Linear Layout and Relative Layout in single XML and faces this kind of issue. Once i replaces all Linear Layout to Relative Layout my problem Resolved.

Its because in Relative Layout center_horizontal isn't the command. that works for views wrapped in linear Layout. for RelativeLayout you need to use
android:layout_centerInParent="true";
as the center gravity command in linear
or
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true"
as the gravity center_horizontal in linear.
When you set android:gravity="center_horizontal" on a parent, it influences the behaviour of its children. Hence, your ImageView gets effected, creating the effect you see after already being placed in the center by other properties.
You can see this effect for yourself by placing a TextView in there with android:layout_width="fill_parent".

RelativeLayout is taking fullscreen for wrap_content

Why does FOOBARZ get layed out all the way at the bottom when no elements are layout_height="fill_parent" in other words, all elements are wrap_content for height?

Which is exactly your case. RelativeLayout can not do that.
For those looking for a solution to this, like I did, you can use FrameLayout instead of RelativeLayout.
Then you can set the gravity the intended object to bottom right as below

android:layout_width="wrap_content">

You have set the RelativeLayout to "wrap_content"
and the TextView to android:layout_alignParentBottom="true", so it automatically tries to stretch the RelativeLayout to the bottom. Don't use such dependencies with Relative Layout, as it can count as "circular dependencies".
From the docs for RelativeLayout:
Note that you cannot have a circular dependency between the size of the RelativeLayout and the position of its children. For example, you cannot have a
RelativeLayout whose height is set to WRAP_CONTENT and a child set to ALIGN_PARENT_BOTTOM.
Try to align your TextView to something other than the parent RelativeLayout, but watch out for this problem as well:

Alternatively, try to add more sophisticated inner layouts.

FrameLayout is usually good for placing different views one on top of each other (where the most recent child is on top of the previous child). In your case, you'd like to place views one next to each other (above, below, start, end), so I think ConstrainLayout fits better because it's exactly what it does.
Unlike RelativeLayout, you'd be able to set the ConstrainLayout width to wrap_content and still arrange its children views as you wish, for example instead of
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
you can use
grid:layout_constraintTop_toTopOf="parent"
and instead of
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
you can use
grid:layout_constraintBottom_toBottomOf="parent"
Good answers. Now if you don't have layout_alignParentBottom="true" and still getting this issue watch out for android:background="#drawable/bkgnd" where bkgnd is a biggie.
I'm not sure why the clean and obvious way of accomplishing this hasn't been posted yet. This performant solution works for any View MyView with a known height.
Wrap your RelativeLayout with height wrap_content in a FrameLayout:

Just note that the view at the bottom of the FrameLayout will be on top of your RelativeLayout content, so you'll need to add padding to the bottom of that layout to accomodate it. If you want that view to be variable height, you can either Subclass FrameLayout to add padding in code based on the measured view height, or just change the FrameLayout to vertical LinearLayout if you're not worried about the performance, i.e. it's not a listview item, or the views are relatively lightweight.
Not sure why all the answers here suggest FrameLayout, which is designed to render a single view or views layered in the z axis. OP's problem is a sequence of views stacked vertically, which should be in a LinearLayout.
