Android Library is not working - android

Nothing too exotic. I have classes in a library project, which is set to "Is Library".
The target application project uses this library under the Project Properties/Android section. The project is set to version 2.1-Update (api 7).
None of the classes from the library are visible in the target project. i.e. import statements referencing the classes are underlined in red.
Any ideas?

Try restarting eclipse also try selecting and applying different API level for the project, then apply, then change API level back. I sometimes seen such a problem, usually these actions help.

If your library name has a space in it, remove it.

Using MOTODEV Studio 1.2 and with the same problem.
But changing from Api Level 7 to 8 and changing again (setting up the Lib again) it starts to work.

In your project you have a src directory from your library.
Try refreshing it.

Make sure the classes in your library are declared public. That fixed this problem for me.

NotificationCompat cannot be resolved to a type

I am newer to Android and receive the error message: "NotificationCompat cannot be resolved to a type"
MinSDK=9, TargetSDK=18,
As of yet, all sources are very vague on how to resolve this issue and simply note: "update the JAR files".
What JARs do I need and where can I find them, so that this issue is resolved?
You need the support library. Here are the instructions on how to download them: http://developer.android.com/tools/support-library/setup.html
I needed to add "android-support-v4.jar" to my project to use the ActionBar.
From the support link (which has been updated)
With the release of Android 9.0 (API level 28) there is a new version of the support library called AndroidX
From the menu: Refactor > Migrate to AndroidX...
You will be prompted to back up your project to a zip. After that, a Refactor Preview will be shown in the console area. You should see a button "Do Refactor".
This will remove the error under the noted conditions. You may find some lines of code now report as deprecated after the refactor.
Sometimes Eclipse gets hung up on this class, and no amount of cleaning and rebuilding will make it recognize that you have, in fact, added the support library and imported the correct class. I don't know why it always happens with this particular class. But the solution is to close and restart Eclipse.

How to resolve the error "No resource found that matches the given name" when adding library v7 AppCompat in Eclipse?

I have a project target to API Level 10 and i want to implement the new ActionBar support library.
After follow all the instrutions in the Support Library Setup, when adding the library to my project I came across with dozens of error messages like this:
android-support-v7-appcompat\res\values-v14\styles_base.xml:24: error: Error retrieving parent for item: No resource found that matches the given name 'android:Widget.Holo.....
OK, i know that they are many answers to this question, but, after trying all the more obvious, i still could not solve the error.
I kept searching and found the cause, which is not so obvious, at least for newbies like me.
My intent is provide a full answer to help all those who are like me and do not master all the secrets of the Android development.
This is what you have to do for use the ActionBar support library correctly.
Follow the instructions in the Support Library Setup - Adding libraries with resources.
One thing that can bring some doubt is add the library to your aplicattion project:
(1) In the Project Explorer, right-click your project and select Properties.
(2) At the left pane select Android.
(3) At th bottom of the right pane click Add
(4) Select the library project android-support-v7-appcompat and click OK.
Click OK to close the properties window.
If you not get any of the errors I mentioned it´s all done.
However if you are like me, you dont´t followed the advice of Android team that suggests you always compile your source using the latest SDK, you get the error.
The error ocurrs because my Project Build Target was Android 2.3.3 and need to be at lest 3.0.
It was not immediately clear to me because of the fact that I'm specifically developing for Android 2.3.3 and I'm using support libraries.
OK, I hope this helps.
You should add that support library to your project. To add:
Right click on project, then go to :
properties > Java Build Path > Libraries
here Add External JARs...
add android-support-v7-appcompat.jar (path/to/sdk/extras\android\support\v7\appcompat\libs)
Additionally you also have to copy that jar to libs folder of your project, if it is not there automatically.
and you should use the #style/Theme.AppCompat theme for your application for support-v7 to be working
also keep one thing in mind you should change min sdk version to 11 if you want to support("android:windowActionBar")property in your project.

Android library project Sliding Menu throws java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com.slidingmenu.lib.R$styleable

I'm developing an android application and I'm trying to use a library Sliding Menu (github.com/jfeinstein10/SlidingMenu). However, I have a problem in using the library in a clean project. I get
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com.slidingmenu.lib.R$styleable
when doing
SlidingMenu slidingMenu = new SlidingMenu();
Configurations tested:
JDK tested 1.6u43, 1.7(latest)
Project target api = tried both Android 4.2.2 and Google API 17
SDK versions tested 21, 21.0.1, 21.1
Windows 8 Pro x64, Intel Core i7 3610QM, Nvidia GT660M, Samsung Pro 840 256GB SSD
Integrated both with Actionbarsherlock and without it.
I import the library, by creating an Android Project from Existing Code, marking "Is Library" in the android properties, and then referrencing it in the original application android properties (not via .jar)
Below links to code snippets, full stacktrace and screenshots of current configurations

I've been stuck on this for 3 days now... :/
I had to add the dependency two ways before I eradicated my noclassdef errors
Add the library.jar from /bin as dependency to your build path, make sure to select the Order and Export tab and select the check box as well for the new dependency.
Add the library via right mouse click on your project, then properties, then android then add library
Voilla
I struggled with this as well, and from a vast number of google searches, managed to piece this together.
Hope it helps..
Simple solution :
If your project already contain support library then just delete support library from library(jfeinstein10 / SlidingMenu) and then every thing works fine.you can do it after import also.
1) Just add the library to the properties of your project (ANDROID);
2) And mark the same in Order & Export property of (JAVA BUILD PATH);
I had the same problem. Since you're building the app with IDE, you need to tell the IDE that this module is a Library, thus defining the library in .properties file would be useless. Try change the IDE build file, I'm not familiar with eclipse, but in android studio this lines would be enough:
module.iml
<configuration>
<option name="LIBRARY_PROJECT" value="true" />
</configuration>
Go to Manifast and change sdkversion to 11

Third party library troubles on LayerType attribute even after building it on Android 3.2

So, I coded my entire app in Android 4.0.3. I used AmbilWarna color picker. Then I got this requirement to reduce the SDK requirement for Android 2.3. This is the point when EVERYTHING was working fine and superb
I have downgraded teh minimum SDK requirement. Everything runs fine except as soon as I include Ambil Warna as a library on my project, I start getting the error everywhere R is used, Saying that R cannot be resolved to a variable.
Upon a loot on the Console, this is what seems to be the real cause of the problem:
AmbilWarna\res\layout\ambilwarna_dialog.xml:18: error: No resource identifier found for attribute 'layerType' in package 'android'
I have set the Android SDK to 3.2 for AmbilWarna library project and on my project its at 2.3
Does anyone have any idea?
this is regarding this: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/view/View.html#attr_android:layerType
you are just trying to use a property for android that is not available on that api of the layout parser.
I just checked out the colorpicker code you are trying to use, and it's project.properties says it's written for target API-17 (android 4.2) and i'm tryng to compile it for API-10 (android 2.3.3)
simply remove those parts.
my diff
--- a/AmbilWarna/res/layout/ambilwarna_dialog.xml
+++ b/AmbilWarna/res/layout/ambilwarna_dialog.xml
## -19,7 +19,7 ##
android:id="#+id/ambilwarna_viewSatBri"
android:layout_width="#dimen/ambilwarna_hsvWidth"
android:layout_height="#dimen/ambilwarna_hsvHeight"
- android:layerType="software" />
+ />
and hope it's not mentioned in the code :)
I've had a lot of troubles too with my external libraries. What usually helped are one of these or multiple steps of these connected:
Delete ALL R.java imports in your Classes (there must not be any of them)
In Eclipse: Source => "Clean Up"
In Eclipse: Project => "Clean..." (This will rebuild your project from scratch and therefore regenerate your R.java)
Manually delete all R.java and save (located in /gen/)
Delete your external library project and readd it.
Step 3 usually did the job for me.
Also be aware that your minSdkVersion and targetSdkVersion fit to your library project (and the guidelines which are included)
I had the same problem, I thought I could just build and include the third party jar file and bring this over to my project - this resulted in the same problem as you - AmbilWarna\res\layout\ambilwarna_dialog.xml error: No resource identifier found for attribute 'layerType'.
To fix it I copied over the source files and all resources into my project (images/layouts etc etc), hey presto it worked.
Thanks http://code.google.com/p/android-color-picker/ for a nice clean easy to use colour picker!!

Action Bar for android < 3.0

I want use ActionBar for my application but i found it can't use for android < 3.0.
I found this https://github.com/johannilsson/android-actionbar to solved my problem but I get error at
import com.markupartist.android.widget.ActionBar;
import com.markupartist.android.widget.ActionBar.Action;
import com.markupartist.android.widget.ActionBar.IntentAction;
Give ActionBarSherlock a try. I use it for one of my projects and after some reading of the docs and the samples it just worked. The samples are easy and straight forward, you should be able to extract what you need from them.
To see what it's able of just download the sample app from the market: Sample App (requires at least Android 1.6)
You should add the code to a library, and add the library to your project.
To do this in Eclipse create a new project, using the same package name as the github project (so com.markupartist.android.widget). In the properties select the project to be a library under the Java Build Path tab. Then, in your project, go to its properties, and select the library.
I think your including files are missing (JAR libs) , Click on error icon and then select fix project setup.
I spent around 10 hours trying to fix this problem. All the above ans does not work. Actually what is missing is android support library. To fix this, right click on project, >Android Tool> Add Support Library. Hope this save alot of time for other who came across this. just add support library both on your ActionBar library and the current project.
