Why won't expandablelistview work with context menus? - android

My app used to use a standard ListView, and registerForContextMenu(getListView()) and everything worked just fine.
I needed to change my app to accommodate nested lists so I replaced the ListView with ExpandableListView. I changed the Activity to ExpandableListActivity. I also changed my adapter to a tree adapter and implemented a custom view class to populate the list with (based on a FrameLayout view).
Suddenly my context menus stopped working and I can't figure out why. I can't long click on any of my list items and I'm completely stuck on where to start looking.

Probably another view then your listitems receives the longclick.
I would add OnLongClickListener to all views and create log what listener gets triggered by a longclick.
Otherwise it might help to see something from your code to spot an error.

Access Adapter items of Recyclerview

I'm using Recyclerview to show a list. I want to delete some items like IOS. In my listview template I have added a button to delete item which is invisible by default. In my activity I have another button attached at bottom (Not part of listview) and on tap of this button I want to make all delete buttons of listview visible.
My Question is how can I get reference to all delete buttons of listview in activity and is it the right way to do this?

Assuming you have ViewHolders set up, you already have references to all the buttons in your list. All you have to do is to make them visible for every item in the list with a simple loop.
In case you haven't implemented ViewHolders I suggest you check out the documentation and take a look at some simple tutorials on how to use them.
On a side note. If I understood correctly you're making a bottom tab for your app and since you referenced iOS I gotta say this; Remember that Android and iOS are two unique operating systems with their own ways of handling things. Check out Googles pure Android documentation.
In your question title you say RecyclerView, but in your text you say ListView. The solution is similar either way, but it's best to be perfectly clear what you're doing.
In either case, there are at least two different solutions.
First, you could use a boolean flag to determine if all the the item buttons should be showing or not. You check this flag at the time the item view is inflated or created and toggle the button accordingly. If the boolean flag is ever changed, the easiest thing to do is tell the RecyclerView/ListView that the underlying data has changed and to redraw all the views. Call notifyDatasetChanged on the adapter.
The other thing you can do at the time the item buttons should change is iterate all the visible item views, find the button, and change its visibility. With RecyclerView, you can do this, and with ListView you can do this.

How to make one of the row in SwipeListview open while starting activity

I am working on a project where i have to implement swipelistview. I found one of this in https://github.com/47deg/android-swipelistview. The thing i want to do to make any of the list item in swipelistview to be opened by default while starting an activivity
I do not know if there is a default behavier that does it, but you can do it manually. In your list adapters' "getView" function, add this line:
((SwipeListView)parent).openAnimate(position);
Please be advised that list adapters recycle views. If you need views to maintain their open/closed state when they dissapear off the screen and come back, you should have a way to determine if a view should be open or closed in your "getView" function. Otherwise adapter will reuse the state view was in when it rolled off the screen. You can close the view by calling
((SwipeListView)parent).closeAnimate(position);

Android Open ListView from another ListView without intents

I searched allover but couldn't find any clear answer. I have a ListView declared in A customView and I would like to open another ListView when clicking on an Item.
I managed to do that by changing the adapter each time I click on an item on the Main ListView and show a pseudo new ListView. However this is not a stable solution.
I would like to know how can I instantiate a new listView without using intents or without having to change the adapter each time I want a new list output. I would want to create an entirely new ListView without direct connection to the initial one.
Can you try using ListFragment with FrameLayout in layout file? and just switch fragment when click on list item
I found the solution. I created in the CustomView several LinearLayouts for each listview one root layout. I have also created an individual class for each listView and used the same CustomAdapter and ViewHolder throughout. What I additionally used were interfaces that I declared in each List View class, with a method that tracks the row number. Based on this I implemented all the interfaces in the CustomView and listened to the clicked rows. At last, I then created animation methods and played with the visibilities.
By the way, instead of setting the List views to INVISIBLE i set them to GONE, hence there are quite manny the GPU doesn't need to recalculate the layout bounds.

The interface listener must be implemented on "this" context of the CustomView, otherwise NUllPointerException hence the ListView doesn't know where to listen too.

ViewPager and OnItemClickListener in ListView

I'm working on creating a swipe-to-dismiss list view adapter. My basic methodology is to wrap the list item's view as the second view in a ViewPager and provide the necessary callbacks in the item change listener of the ViewPager. Through much pain I've got the View recycler working as intended, as well as ViewHolder and ViewBinder patterns implemented. I even managed to keep the ListView from taking over the touch events while the ViewPager is being scrolled without having to make a custom subclass of ListView (I can do it all from the Adapter).
Where I'm running into trouble is getting the selector and the OnItemClickListener to work. After looking at ListView's source it seemed that by overriding the ViewPager's hasFocusable() method to always return false (later on I'll pull this value from the child view) these things should have been reenabled. Unfortunately this is not the case. I've tried the setDecendantFocusability() workaround and I'm still stuck.
I'd like to avoid having to extend ListView if possible to provide the greatest amount of modularity. For similar reasons I don't want to add the selector to the ViewPager's background (if the dev changes the ListView's selector this wouldn't be reflected). Essentially I'm looking to make the ViewPager code transparent between the ListView and child View. Any ideas?
You are saying that you are making each list item a view pager, so that you can implement swiping to delete? If so... no no, this is not what view pager is for. First sorry it is just not intended to be used as an item in a list. Second it is for switching between views, not swiping to delete.
Unfortunately we don't have a sample code to show how to do this, but you can look at the platform's implementation of the notification pane or recent apps to get some ideas.

displaying item on specific listview item only

I am trying to get a button to show up on my list item (declared as android:visibility:"gone" in the XML) to show as visible when I perform some gestures on it. However, how can I actually notify the getView method correctly to display the button only on the listview item?
I tried using getChildAt(position) which ended up displaying several buttons at once.
I tried passing in the position for example I detected that the gesture was performed on from pointToPosition and passed it into the adapter for the getView method to display, but it had the same problem of displaying several at once.
do anyone know how can I solve this?
I think you may have a misunderstanding of how Adapter.getView() works its meant to create or reuse layouts when rendering the ListView it also needs to be fast so conditional manipulation in this method is discouraged. Although ListView.getChildAt() may work it does not effectively use the API. Your adapter will have a setViewBinder() unless you're using an ArrayAdapter (if so I suggest using SimpleAdapter because of the additional features). Use your ViewBinder implementation to switch the visibility of the button.
If you'd prefer to continue to use ArrayAdapter use ListView.getChildAt(int) to findViewById(R.id.your_button).setVisibility(). If this is what you already tried and its setting all the buttons visible then please post the related code.
