Android Broadcast from Service To Activity - android

I am trying to send a Broadcast from a service out to an Activity. I can verify the broadcast is sent from within the service, but the Activity doesn't pick up anything.
Here is the relevant service code:
Intent i = new Intent(NEW_MESSAGE);
i.putExtra(FriendInfo.USERNAME, StringUtils.parseBareAddress(message.getFrom()));
i.putExtra(FriendInfo.MESSAGE, message.getBody());
i.putExtra("who", "1");
sendBroadcast(i);
And the receiving end in the activity class:
public class newMessage extends BroadcastReceiver
{
#Override
public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent)
{
String action = intent.getAction();
if(action.equalsIgnoreCase(IMService.NEW_MESSAGE)){
Bundle extra = intent.getExtras();
String username = extra.getString(FriendInfo.USERNAME);
String message = extra.getString(FriendInfo.MESSAGE);
String who = extra.getString("who");
}
}
}
The BroadcastReceiver is defined within an Activity. I am registering the receiver in the onCreate method of the Activity, not in the Manifest file.
I'm stumped as to why it won't rec. anything.
Any insight?
EDIT
Registering takes place as follows:
registerReceiver(messageReceiver, new IntentFilter(IMService.NEW_MESSAGE));
Where "messageReceiver" is defined as
private newMessage messageReceiver = new newMessage();
IMService.NEW_MESSAGE is merely a string = "NewMessage"

I'm not sure if it is specific to the set up, or if it is a fix in general, but moving the register/unregister to the onResume/onPause _respectively_ and not registering in the onCreate solved the problem for me.

Try this two things:
Use manifest file to register receiver(but it barely helps)
Try make your Receiver a regular class, not inner one.

Inner class broadcast receiver will not be able to handle broadcast(means it unable to locate that class ).
So make it as a separate class
Definitely it will work.

Get view of activity and fragments from service

I have on my app a service who get my location (gps). This service get information like latitude, longitude, etc, and I want wrote these information in layouts fragment and activity (TextView).
But how can I get view reference of theses fragments since my service ?
You can do one thing to achieve this. send broadcast to the activity. And on that activity where you want to update view register broadcast there. Once you get the location stuff then send broadcast. Hope that helps you. Write this code in service when you get location stuff and pass that stuff via intent as mentioned in below code
Intent broadcastIntent = new Intent(your action here);
broadcastIntent.putExtra(BaseBroadCastReceiver.BROADCAST_KEY_AUDIO_INDEX, audioIndex);
broadcastIntent.putExtra(BaseBroadCastReceiver.BROADCAST_KEY_AUDIO_LIST, mSongList.size());
sendBroadcast(broadcastIntent);
And in your activity write below code
private void registerMyReceiver() {
IntentFilter filter = new IntentFilter(your action here you passed in service);
registerReceiver(playNewAudio, filter);
}
NOTE: your action can be any string but string must be same on both side
When activity's oncreate method is called, call registerMyReceiver() method
and in onDestroy method unregister is else you may get RUNTIME exception.
Below will be your code for actual broad cast receiver
private BroadcastReceiver myBroadcast= new BroadcastReceiver() {
#Override
public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) {
//do your stuff here... get extra which you passed
// from service and set that value in views
}
};

Android Change a variable in service from other app

the title says all, I need to change the variable of my service from a activity in my other app , what to finalize the service or not, this is possible?
I found the Message object , but I do not quite understand
The simplest solution would be to implement a BroadcastReceiver. Your Service listens for the Broadcast and the other App sends the Broadcast.
Example Reciever:
public class MyReceiver extends BroadcastReceiver {
#Override
public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) {
// Get bundle from intent and use it to set your Variable in your Service
}
}
Example Broadcaster (courtesy of Vogella):
Intent intent = new Intent();
intent.setAction("de.vogella.android.mybroadcast");
sendBroadcast(intent);

sendBroadcast does not get called in Activity when Activity is opened

I am making an app where I receive XMPP packets. My app starts in foreground and starts a Sticky Service if not started and start receive messages in backgrounds and make notifications of them. The notifications works well and when clicked they show the data. Issue comes (that too sometimes in some mobile phones) when I make a sendBroadcast call from service so that I can asynchronously update the text of message in Activity when it is opened.
My app is made with a Activity and within that there are two Fragments(SherlockFragment)
So I made a private broadcastreceiver in one of fragment where I want to show the text (updated text).
Code is written below
public class newMessage extends BroadcastReceiver
{
#Override
public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent)
{
Log.v("ONMESSAGE", "broadcast");
String action = intent.getAction();
if(action.equalsIgnoreCase("NewMessage")){
Bundle extra = intent.getExtras();
String username = extra.getString("from");
String message = extra.getString("message");
showMessage(username, message);
Log.v("ONMESSAGE", "in broadcast is " + username);
}
}
}
I then make a statement of below in Fragment class
private newMessage messageReceiver = new newMessage();
in onCreateView I wrote the below line
getActivity().registerReceiver(messageReceiver, new IntentFilter("NewMessage"));
I did not unregister the broadcast receiver now and I tried doing that too.
When I receive a message in my service, I made call to below code.
Intent i = new Intent("NewMessage");
i.putExtra("message", message);
i.putExtra("from", from);
context.sendBroadcast(i);
I did not add the broadcats to to manifest cause I dont know how to do it when written inside a class.
Sometimes, it calls the sendbroadcase and everything works well however sometimes it does not call and just generate the notification.

Explicit addressing an Intent to a dynamically broadcast receiver

i am new to Android and trying to understand the communication between apps.
I am trying to write 3 little apps which can communicate with each other. If you want to sent a message to everybody you just use an implicit broadcast.
implicit Intent intent.setAction("com.example.myChatMessage")
if you want to adress only 1 specifc receiver i did it with
explicite Intentintent.setComponent("com.example.test.android.broadcastreceiver.b",
"com.example.test.android.broadcastreceiver.b.myBroadcastReceiver")
this works, when the broadcast receiver is a seperate class and defined in the AndroidManifest.xml.
My Question: Is it possible to explicit adress a dynamicall registered broadcast receiver?
package com.example.test.android.broadcastreceiver.b;
public class MainActivity extends Activity {
private final IntentFilter intentfilter = new IntentFilter("com.example.myChatMessage");
private myBroadcastReceiver broadcastreceiver;
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
broadcastreceiver = new myBroadcastReceiver();
registerReceiver(broadcastreceiver, intentfilter);
}
public static class myBroadcastReceiver extends BroadcastReceiver{
#Override
public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) {
String message = intent.getStringExtra("message");
Log.d("message", "B received: "+message);
}
}
}
It receives all implicit broadcasts but no explicit one - i don't know hot to adress it. Can you help me?
It does not appear possible to send an explicit intent to a dynamically registered broadcast receiver. Registering the receiver in AndroidManifest.xml is the only way.
If you dynamically register a BroadcastReceiver – by calling Context.registerReceiver() – you supply a BroadcastReceiver instance ... If you try to send an Intent to the receiver by naming the class of the BroadcastReceiver, it will never get delivered .. The Android system will not match the Intent you declared to the class of the BroadcastReceiver instance you registered.

Android Communication between Broadcast Receiver and MainActivity (Send data to activity)

I've a simple Main Activity which has to stop till an SMS is received... How can I launch a method from the MainActivity within the BroadcastReceiver's onReceive() Method?
Is there away with Signal and Wait? Can I pass something with a pending Intent, or how can I implement this communication?
Communication from BroadcastReceiver to Activity is touchy; what if the activity is already gone?
If I were you I'd set up a new BroadcastReceiver inside the Activity, which would receive a CLOSE message:
private BroadcastReceiver closeReceiver;
// ...
closeReceiver = new BroadcastReceiver() {
#Override
public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) {
//EDIT: receiving parameters
String value = getIntent().getStringExtra("name");
//... do something with value
finish();
}
};
registerReceiver(closeReceiver, new IntentFilter(CLOSE_ACTION));
Then from the SMS BroadcastReceiver you can send out this action:
Intent i = new Intent(CLOSE_ACTION);
i.putExtra("name", "value"); //EDIT: this passes a parameter to the receiver
context.sendBroadcast(i);
I hope this helps?
I had the exact same problem, I tried using intent but i was unsuccessful
The easiest way to use it would be using static methods and static variables
MainActivity.java
public static void stopsms()
{
/*
some code to stop the activity
*/
}
SMSReceiver.java
at the end call this function
MainActivity.stopsms();
It works amazing if your code does not affect when you use static methods and variables. Let me know if you need any help.
The problem with registering a second receiver within the activity, however, is that it will not be persistent like registering in the manifest... thus, although, this solution may work, will only work if the activity is running in background.
it's easy, use interface like that:
1) in your broadcast receiver create an interface.
public interface ChangeListener{
public void functionWhoSendData(String type);
public void etc();
}
and instantiate that interface in your broadcast receiver, use it:
public void onReceive(....
String data=functionWhereYouReceiveYouData();
ChangeListener.functionWhoSendData(data);
}
And in your activity, make it implements your interface
