issue in installing ADT 8.0.1 in eclipse galileo - android

In eclipse i updated installed packages for Android SDK Tools from revision 2 to revision 8.
Now when i am trying to install the ADT plugin 8.0.1 (help->install new sw).
I select the path of the zip folder in my local (ADT-8.0.1.zip) and check on all Android DDMS,Android Development Tools,Android Hierarchy Viewer
and click on next button
The screen shows something as " Calculating requirements and dependencies " and gets stuck there.
Pls suggest where am i going wrong. Thanks in advance.

This happens from time to time. Don't ask me why tho.
Just try it again and it should work.

This happens because the Eclipse is over-zealous in checking ALL-THE-FREAKING Dependencies available. A possible solution that worked for me can be found in this post of mailing list.
It tells to do all the updates before installing any new plugins.
Steps
Go to Windows / Preferences, select Install / Update and then click on the
link for Automatic Updates, change the settings to:
Look for updates each time the platform is started
Search for updates and notify me when they are available
Notify me once about updates Click on apply and then Ok.
Restart Eclipse, let the auto-update run. Then go to Help/ Check for
Updates; and then install whatever updates it presents, mostly it is:
Java Development
Web and Java EE Development
Click Install and wait for the updates to be downloaded / installed. Restart
Eclipse when asked.
Done, worked for me in every case(Subversion and Android).

How to update Android Studio automatically?

I need to Update Android Studio, to the 0.9.9 version, but when I press "Download" (On the update info dialog box) it sends me here:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Isn't there a way to make the update happen automatically, because I don't even know how to update it manually.
Also, in the dialog, there is this recommendation:
To configure automatic update settings, see the Updates dialog of your IDE Settings.
The word "Updates" is a link, but it doesn't work.
For this task, I recommend using Android Studio IDE and choose the automatic installation program, and not the compressed file.
On the top menu, select Help -> Check for Update...
Upon the updates dialog below, select Updates link to configure your IDE settings.
For checking updates, my suggestion is to select the Dev channel. I
don't recommend Beta or Canary
channel which is the unstable version and they are not automatic installation, instead a zip file is provided in that case.
When finished with the configuration, select Update and Restart for downloading the installation EXE.
Run the installation.
Warning: Among different version of Android Studio, the steps may be different. But hopefully you get the idea, as I try to be clear on my intentions.
Extra info: If you want, check for Android Studio updates # Android Tools Project Site - Recent Builds. This web page seems to be more accurate than other Android pages about tool updates.
The simplest way to update is as follows:
Go to the start screen for Android Studio. If it automatically opens a project when you open it, close that project (not exit).
At the bottom there will be a check for updates link which you can use to update to the latest version.
There's not always an updater between versions, depending on the version you're starting from and what you're updating to. If that happens, download the full installer and reinstall Android Studio.
Here's the easiest way, as in snapshot,
download the required file and install.
On the startup screen you can use the configure button to check for updates.
1) Choose configure > Check for Update
2) Download the latest updates
Through Android Studio:
Help
Check for latest update
Update
for windows users
go to HELP> CHECK FOR UPDATES>UPDATE(click the link updates)
If you go to help>>check for updates it will tell you if there's an update.
You don't have to change from the stable channel. If you aren't offered an update and restart button, kindly close the window and try again. After about 4 or 5 checks like this, it will eventually show you update and restart button.
Why? because google.
If you are already using Android Studio, you can update via the built in Update mechanism (Check For Updates); make sure you switch to the canary or beta channels if you're not being offered an update.
To configure automatic update settings, see the Updates dialog of your IDE Preferences or settings. You can then switch to either the canary or beta channels. (The default is "stable" but probably that one fails to automatically inform of updates).
Hope it helps. Thanks.
These steps are for the people who already have Android Studio installed on their Windows machine >>>
Steps to download the update:
Google for “Update android studio”
Choose the result from “tools.android.com”
Download the zip file (it’s around 500 MB).
Steps to install Android Studio from a .zip folder:
Open the .zip folder using Windows Explorer.
click on 'Extract all' (or 'Extract all files') option in the ribbon.
Go to the extract location. And then to android-studio\bin and run studio.exe ifyou’re on 32bit OS, or studio64.exe if you’re on 64bit OS.
By then, the Andriod Studio should open and configure your uppdates
I am having a similar problem while updating from 2.3.2 to 2.3.3.
Go to the bin folder of your Android Studio installation folder:
e.g.
cd opt/android-studio/bin
Provide run permission for studio.sh file: chmod +x studio.sh
Run Android Studio from here: ./studio.sh
and try "update and restart" from android studio.
as of AS 1.2+ there is an auto-check for updates which will let you choose between the stable, dev, canary, and beta channels. However it is just a check instead of a full update script. It does require that you click to install and restart your install ( A problem for a remote server situation)
Yes you are right. There is no built in mechanism for automatically updation of Android Studio. You have to manually download it and configure it.
MacOS users
//Manually
Android Studio -> Check for Updates...
//Check Automatically
Android Studio -> Preferences... -> Appearance & Behaviour > System Settings > Updates -> Automatically check updates for <channel>
//Check Now
I think in the new versions of android studio there is no update and restart when you press check for updates from the android studio, so you have to download the newer version from their official website and install it manually. First, you have to change the name of the previous setup version folder for Example Android Studio to Android Studio1, and you can now install the newer version and everything will be the same as before.

Error: This Android SDK requires Android Developer Toolkit version 22.6.1 or above

I have installed adt version 22.6.1 already 2 days ago. It was working fine. Suddenly, When I open eclipse today, it keeps showing me following error:
This Android SDK requires Android Developer Toolkit version 22.6.1 or above. Current version is 22.2.1.v201309180102-833290. Please update ADT to the latest version.
Here is screenshot of my eclipse's Android SDK Manager :
I tried with following steps to resolve my issue as discussed in this Link
Help | Install new software
Select the ADT update site (there are two, one with http:// and one with https://. If one doesn't work, try the other.
Select the developer tools section and press next.
You should see a dialog that says This software is already installed, an update will be performed instead. Clicking OK will lead to 22.6.1 being installed.
But unfortunately it didn't work for me.
Here is a screenshot I am attaching which shows the error I am getting while updating the tools.
How can I get rid of it?
I have solved this issue yesterday.
Follow the steps :
Help -> Install New Software -> Add -> (Give any name suppose NewUpdate) -> add this url : https://dl-ssl.google.com/eclipse/plugin/4.2 -> OK
Now it will list the available updates, which should ideally be adt 20.x.x
Select the list items Let it be installed. Eclipse will restart and Its done.
I hope this will helpful for you :)
Yet, if someone is facing this issue, Then follow steps below:
download new stand alone SDK from android's developer site
Close eclipse if it is opened and copy new downloaded sdk in the same location where your already existing old sdk is. Must replace conflict files and keep rest.
No need to delete old sdk. Copying as in step 2 will update your Android Developer Toolkit version to 22.6.1 or above which is required and will keep already downloaded APIs.
Now start your eclipse, and the error will be gone forever. :)
if someone will have trouble doing so, leave me a comment, will try to guide.
I managed to resolve it by doing the following:
Downloaded latest ADT (Win x64)
Deleted my old ADT install (It got bugged when I simply tried to overwrite the existing files) - see this google issue
Copied the zip file to C:\ (since it was complaining about too long filenames while unpacking)
Unpacked to my ADT install folder.
Ran updates and SDK manager updates.
Now it's working, but I lost my pretty Eclipse theme. Oh, and the target adt is not being resolved, a problem for another topic.
Just delete the existing ADT and install new version of ADT.generally this problems occurs
when you update SDK using below link.
https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/
The ADT Bundle on developer.android.com seems to me as out of date.
I fixed the same problem by downloading eclipse (Java EE was my choice, but you can choose your flavor) and Installing the Eclipse Plugin
this steps solve my problem:
go to Help -> Install New Software.
in the bottom box, click What is already installed? text.
then you will see Eclipse Installation Details box, please Uninstall all conflicts software, in my case I uninstall the following software:
Android DDMS
Android Development Tools
Android Hierarchy Viewer
Android Native Development
Android Traceview
Tracer for OpenGL ES
when uninstall complete, please restart your Eclipse.
after your Eclipse open, please follow again these steps:
go to Help -> Install New Software.
in Work with box, select or add {ADT Plugin - https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse}.
then check all available software.
click Next > to install newest software.
I hope this helps you :)
I use OSX and facing the problem for 2 days.
I solved the problem by following the steps below:
-Download ADT Bundle from https://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
-Help -> Install New Software
-Write https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/ then install Developer tools
-Restart eclipse and raised the error below:
Android SDK content Loader has encountered a problem.parseSdkContent failed
java.lang.NullPointeException
-Delete .android folder under user profile. Restart eclipse
No errors and 22.6.1 is installed.
For those who tried everything but didn't get any positive result. I did the following and it worked:
Uninstall the ADT by helping from following link:
Uninstalling Android ADT
Now you can follow the install new software to add ADT to your eclipse. This way you won't get any conflict since you uninstalled old version.
I currently have Eclipse and ADT installed in the same directory as
F:\eclipse
\eclipse\
\sdk\
I downloaded and installed the latest ADT to
C:\Users\Rick\AppData\Local\Android\android-sdk
I then copied the contents of the C:\Users\Rick\AppData\Local\Android\android-sdk into the F:\eclipse\sdk\ folder, and let it merge all folders and overwrite everything.
Now I have 22.6.1 and I don't have to re-download all the platform stuff again.
Today me and one of my friends faced the same problem, so I have tried many things like restarting eclipse, checking updates, etc. but none was working for me.
Then I found a solution from Here and it's working as a charm for me and also for my friend.
Follow the steps here:
Start Eclipse, then select Help > Install New Software.
Click Add, in the top-right corner.
In the Add Repository dialog that appears, enter "ADT Plugin" for
the Name and the following URL for the Location:
https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/
Click OK.
If you have trouble acquiring the plugin, try using "http" in the Location URL, instead of "https" (https is preferred for security reasons).
In the Available Software dialog, select the checkbox next to
Developer Tools and click Next.
In the next window, you'll see a list of the tools to be downloaded.
Click Next. Read and accept the license agreements, then click
Finish.
If you get a security warning saying that the authenticity or
validity of the software can't be established, click OK.
When the installation completes, restart Eclipse.
The "Install new Software" under help in Eclipse will NOT work because it conflicts with ver#22.
I just downloaded the new Eclipse bundle from:
Get the Android SDK - google site, extracted it in a new folder ant it is done.
It is working smoothly, no problems.
Few tips to save you time:
Backup your workspace (just in case) - personally didn't use this back.
Once you open the new eclipse.exe it will ask you to select a workspace - just brows to your ols workspace and it will import all your projects (no problems).
In order to save time of download and install of the SDK again, I Cut & Paste the OLD SDK library from the previous bundle directory to the new one (Close your new Eclipse first).
When you re-open Eclipse, you may receive an error message saying that Eclipse can't find the SDK directory. It will ask you to open "Preferences". Once open, browse to the new SDK directory (the one that you just copied). Doing this will save you hours of re-installing all the SDK updates that you did on the previous Eclipse.
Have fun, it is really not a big deal.

eclipse Android SDK Update loses ADT update, and SDK location

Been away from eclipse and Android for three months, came back to get back into it.
Tried to install two new updates to the SDK (v16 of one thing, v20 of another), which of course failed because I forgot to run eclipse as Administrator, so I got the 'folder failed to be moved' error.
Fine, do it again, seems to finish. Reminds at the end to check eclipse/help/'check for updates', so I did, and let it run while I had dinner.
Now, I'm ready to jump back in.
When I open eclipse, I get the pop-up "This Android SDK requires Android Development Toolkit version 20.0 or above. Current version is 16.0.1.201112150204-238534. Please update ADT to the latest version."
Clicking eclipse / window / Android SDK Manager (where I originally found and authorized these updates), I now get "Location of the Android SDK has not been setup in preferences"
I get the same error as in #2 when I click on AVD Manager on the same menu.
In reviewing some answers here, I got to the "reinstall eclipse" suggestion and decided to write this up and see if a more rational explanation / solution might be forthcoming.
Thanks
Update ADT to a newer version and setup SDK location again. This should be solve your problem.(I'm sorry my answer is most likely a comment, but unfortunately I can't make comments still)
As I feared, I'd read the error msg wrong. Since the SDK manager was telling me the 'Tools' were at 22.0.xxx, I was reading this as the 'Tools' in ADT 'Android Development Tools.' It's not. Went back to the SDK web page from the SDK Read Me.txt, and from that page to the ADT Plugin page, which then led to the 'Installing the eclipse plugin'. Only difference in following those steps was that I didn't have to 'Add' ("Error: duplicate location") because the location to get the plugin was already in the dropdown for 'Work with:'.
COMMENT: Why does this have to be a separate update? Hasn't anyone looked at the SDK Manager's 'Update SDK' process, disconnected from the eclipse ADT plugin update, and thought 'Jeez, won't that create incompatabilities/confusion/difficulties among developers and prospective developers?' I'm not that level of developer in this environment (yet) but c'mon, gang, no one knows how to link the SDK update to a follow-on script to start the ADT eclipse plugin update dialog?

ADT needs to update but find no update

Today I installed API8 from the SDK manager, previously I only had been working with API14. After the SDK manager was done, and upon restarting ADT I got this error:
This android SDK requires Android Developer Toolkit version 21.1.0
and above. Current version is 21.0.1.2012-12-6-2-58.
So I click to find updates but I get "no updates found".
I did the following:
Used the SDK manager to re-install android SDK tools (rev 21.1).
Used the SDK manager to re-install API8 and API14.
Still no go :(
I had the same issue. Please try the following in eclipse
Help --> Install new software
Then choose "Android Developer Tools Update Site - http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/" from the drop down list and update the ADT
IF THIS THROWS ERROR Like this
No repository found containing: osgi.bundle,com.android.ide.eclipse.adt,21.1.0.v201302060044-569685
Modify http: to https:
Sample : https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/
And then update ADT. This method worked for me.
You get that issue when your eclipse ADT plugin version doesn't match your SDK tools version.
Have you tried updating the ADT plugin in eclipse?
Help -> Install New Software and then using the ADT update site should work.
If you get a No Respository Found error using this site, you should use the HTTPS version instead.
If you're still having trouble getting it to install, you can download the zip standalone and manually install it. You can find the latest zip and installation instructions at the ADT troubleshooting page.
If problem in "http".
1) Help --> "Install new software" --> "Available Software Sites"
2) Click on "Android Developer Tools Update Site"
3) Click "Edit"
4) Mofify "http" to "https"
5) Click "Ok" --> "Ok"
6) Try update again.
I tried all methods mentioned here, but still without success.
What finally helped was the tip from No repository found error in Installing ADT in eclipse Indigo:
Uncheck “Contact all update sites during install to find required software”
you Should Update your ADT to Latest Version by below way.
Eclipse--> Go to Help--> Install New Software --> Add--> Inside Add Repository
Write Name="ADT"(as you want) and
Location="https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/" --> after
loading some times you will get Developer Tools & NDK Plugins-->
checked both if you want to install Use NDK as future Use or checked
only developer Tool--> click Next--> Finish.
After this you can Update your SDK to latest Version.
Hope it will Help.
Got this one too, going from ADT 22.3 to 23.
Not sure what's keeping Eclipse from finding the updates (maybe some IDs changed or something), but the solution is to install the ADT plugins over the existing ones using Help -> Install New Software, just select the same site, no need to correct the URL from https to http or vice versa. The wizard will tell you there are a bunch of conflicts that'll result in removing the old versions of the plugins -- that's ok, go for it.
UPD Seemingly, (as at least one person downvoted the answer), installing new version over old one forcefully doesn't work for everyone. Here's the related bug where it's said that the old installation of Exclipse/ADT is hopelessly unupdatable and one should just download the new bundle to resolve this.
PS Anyway, you should be using Android Studio by now. Compared to Eclipse, it's a memory hog and has a very different feel to it and different hotkeys, but (as much as I hate to say it having been a snuggled up Eclipse user for a long time) it's way better, at least for Android development.
Same issue here, but luckily it is resolved now. The help->install new software and the android tool manager didn't help.
I re-downloaded the ADT bundle and simply copied over the failing installation, it works now.
I had the very same problem last weekend. Go to Help->Install new Software. Here use Android Developer Tools Update Site url - http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/, two options should appear and I can't remember which one to choose ;) (It should be the one with DEV)
I don't think it is necessary but before I removed and downloaded the whole Eclipse with ADT. But it should not be necessary.

Eclipse: won't let me use Android SDK, wrongly claims my ADT is out of date

I'm developing for Android with Eclipse, and all was working well until yesterday. I used Ninite to update all my stuff, including JREs and everything (pro tip: do not do that), and it restarted my computer without asking in the middle of editing my workspace.
This caused all kinds of filthy problems, but now it all works, except for Android. I've updated Android SDK and the eclipse ADT, then when I try to tell Eclipse the SDK location, it gives this error:
This Android SDK requires Android Developer Toolkit version 14.0.0 or
above. Current version is 12.0.0.v201106281929-138431. Please update
ADT to the latest version.
Now, this is an outright lie. My ADT is version 14.0.something. I've tried Help>Check for updates, it says there are no updates. I've tried Help>Install new software...>Available Software Sites and removing the ADT repo, then reinstalling ADT, and it says it failed because I already have version 14.0.whatever.
How do I convince eclipse that my ADT is up to date??
I found the answer to the problem. (I'm using Helios, but it should work anyway)
Goto folder /Program Files(x86)/Eclipse/Plugins/ and make sure previous older versions of com.android.ide.eclipse.adt.package_##... are deleted (sometimes update fails to delete because of UAC). Keep the current desired version and complete the following.
Run Eclipse as administrator or disable UAC temporarily. (windows 7)
Go to Help → Install New Software.
On Work with: type https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/ and press ENTER.
Wait for Eclipse to fetch the repository. An item named Developer tools will appear in the list.
Mark it for install, press Next and follow the steps to install the ADT tools.
When finished, it will ask to restart Eclipse. Make sure you do this.
When Eclipse restarts, all your Android SDK packages should show up again.
Dont forget to resume UAC if you need it.
An option is to manually download the ADT plugin (ADT archive) required. The page is, http://developer.android.com/sdk/eclipse-adt.html. The page reveals ADT 18 is available at http://dl.google.com/android/ADT-18.0.0.zip. The link is closer to the bottom page. I needed 17 although 18 was the latest, so I modified the download URL, changing 18 to 17.
Select Help → Install New Software → Add → Choose Archive and select the location of the downloaded ADT archieve file, Choose OK.
Select the components required and proceed as required. You may get a message that the software is already installed, proceed with the installation.
Hope this helps.
I had the same problem. My ADT in the eclipse was 8.x version. But my app required version 12 or more. So, I decided to upgrade both the Android SDK and ADT to the latest (at this time latest ADT is 17). I was able to upgrade the SDK but not the ADT. It always complained I got the versions already but I only had 8.x. The new SDK that I just upgraded would function only with ADT 14 and above. So, I had successfully broken my android development!!
The reason why I wasn't able to upgrade my ADT to the latest was because I was using Eclipse 3.5. The newer ADT versions require 3.6 or above. This small but key bit of information was really at the bottom of the error generated by Eclipse which required scrolling down (since only the top few lines of error were displayed). You typically wouldn't scroll down since these top few lines were followed by whitespace lines :). I did not scroll and I guess I wasted about a day trying to rectify this problem. But eventually I saw those 2 up/down arrows at the right of the dialog box and I scrolled down. There it clearly mentioned ADT 17 requires Eclipse runtime 3.6 and over.
So my solution was to find a suitable ADT that would work with Eclipse 3.5. Yes, tomorrow when I am in the mood, I shall upgrade to Eclipse 3.6 or 3.7 and the boat load of plugins I have :)
I've just upgraded my Android SDK version, and had exactly the same issue.
The 'Check For updates' Eclipse command failed because, for some reasons, Android Traceview failed to update.
My solution was to :
* Open Eclipse → Help → About Eclipse .
* Click Installation Details.
* Here select all the android related lines, and update them one by one, restarting eclipse each time.
And finally it worked ( even with Helios ) !
Best option is go to open eclipse ID
Then go to Help → About Eclipse >>
u will find the Installation Details button click on that
And now u can see the all anriod extension installed.
Select all or select one by one and just click the update button.
you will get the latest version from the net.
Hope these will help you all.
In Eclipse:
Help → Check for Updates.
Your ADT and SDK is not up-to-date yet and Eclipse is complaining about the right stuff...
Open Android SDK Manager from toolbar and update your SDK from there. It doesn't help if you are checking Eclipse updates. Because through Eclipse you cannot check SDK updates for Android.
Button looks like this :
I'm hearing a common issue is that newer Android ADK versions require newer eclipse versions. Colleagues who hit this say they installed Indigo in place of older Helios versions and were able to resolve the issue this way. I have not yet done the same myself.
To anyone else with this problem, my solution was just to delete the Eclipse folder, and download a new copy from scratch. I had to then re-download all plugins including adt, which worked this time round.
