I am new to AndroidStudio AND Gradle.
I imported a project from eclipse, created a module, and tried to run the project, but I got this error:
AndroidManifest.xml doesn't exist or has incorrect root tag
I have been looking at this previous solution for it:
How to build an android library with Android Studio and gradle?
But that solution is WAY too advanced for me.
Could someone please help me understand in simpler terms what is going wrong and how I can fix it?
Thank you!
Update after one of the answers:
These are the options I have under the build menu:
clicking on Sync project with Gradle files button will solve your problem.
That button is under File section on Android Studio 3.6.1
Close your Android Studio
Goto C:\Users\user\.AndroidStudioX.X\system and DELETE the cache
folder
Launch the Android Studio
Goto Build (menu) -> Clean Project when done click the
Build (menu) again and click rebuild project.
That should solve the problem.
For me the issue went away once I opened the android folder of the project in Android Studio to run the project.
So basically, because I was trying to run the Android project from the Root folder, it gave me the error. We need to run the project by selecting the android folder of the project only.
Hope this helps someone!
Click on File > Invalidate Cache/Restart, and that's it. Your project should start working.
For me clicking on Sync project with Gradle files button did not solve the problem alone.
After Syncing project with Gradle files, I explicitly had to invalidate the cache and restart studio. Only after this action, the red cross-mark over configuration disappeared and everything started working.
In my case, my android project got corrupted and some of the files were showing characters, binary numbers, etc. I tried the following solutions
Invalidate & Restart
Rebuild Project
Sync with Gradle File
But none of the above solutions worked for me.
Then I just deleted the cache folder under C:\Users\username\.AndroidStudio3.6\system
and all the invalid characters disappeared and the actual contents of all the files were displayed. This solution worked for me.
Every Android project needs a file called AndroidManifest.xml to tell Android about itself. Either your project doesn't have one, or it's not in the place that Android Studio expects it to be. Try to find it, and move it to the root folder of the project.
1.Check whether the manifest file is there or not.
2.If it is there, check whether the package name is correct or not..
3.If you project has small number of classes, then you create new project in android and then copy paste your code from eclipse. It will be simple. But it is recommended only for small project.
And finally click 'Sync' in the Gradle file. Followed by Rebuilding the project will do a trick.
In my case the Manifest file seemed to be corrupted or maybe its meta data. Trying to open it in Android Studio will show some characters that you see when opening a binary file with a text editor, for ex. Anyway, my project is under Git, so I just deleted it and restored it back, problem fixed.
Go to C drive click User then select your android studio folder then select System find Cache folder and delete this folder before doing this close your android Studio.It will surely work.
I also had this problem, things I tried:
I delete user->gradle-> delete cache folder
Android studio-> file-> Invalid cache/restart
Using my problem is get resolved
I also had this problem, things I tried:
Syncing the file with gradle
Invalidate/Restart
But the problem was still there in the manifest folder-> manifest.xml file it had only 1 line.
So I went to User-> your_username -> Android Studio v -> caches and Deleted the cache folder.
Started Android Studio, and my problem was gone.
But I am not sure which of these might solve yours.
I have opened AndroidManifest.xml in file editor. Add some letters, save it, then android studio found AndroidManifest.
After this I can build project successfully
if your AndroidManifest.xml looks wierd than you can try checking local history or git history. by doing that you can copy paste the previous version AndroidManifest.xml
Experienced that too, there is a line on your manifest code that's incorrect, simply go through it and make necessary corrections.
I accidentally deleted the generated java file R.java. Is there a way to rebuild this file as my project cant run or debug?
I tried cleaning the project then rebuilding it but that doesnt work.
Quick way:
Right click -> Restore from local history.
A window with all the changes you made should appear.
EDIT:
If there are any errors in the layout or any resource files the R file will not be restored after a clean - build
Without having more information, the answer is that R.java WILL be re-generated. Unless you have a compilation error.
Errors in layouts can also hinder R.java from being generated. So check that also.
You can clean and build the project to regenerate.
Gen files are regenerated automatically if you have the Project->Build automatically option is checked. If it's not checked, you need to rebuild it manually by Project->Clean...
Make sure ther isnt any error in a XML file, for example your layour files or Manifest. Clean your project after that.
I accidently deleted my R.java after cleaning the project (Project->Clean). Is there any way to restore or re-create the file?
I tried to build the project but R.java still missing from the project.
Here's a the things I ahve tried.
Rebuilding the project (failed)
Manually creating R.java and wait until the adt will generate the content (failed)
Did Project->clean another time (failed)
Deleted the gen folder and waited until adt will re-create it (failed)
The answer:
Created new project and copied the files that not auto generated (succeeded)
You have to build the project to be able to use the newly added resources.
Cleaning a project removes all auto-generated files. Building the project it should automatically create them. When you Clean a project, there's an option to start a build immediately after clean up.
Here's a few things you can try (did the same procedure after manually deleting the "gen" directory.
After you have deleted the gen directory, go to Project > Clean ...
You should have errors indicating that R cannot be resolved to a variable. Right click on your project from the Package Explorer and select Build Project. Be sure Build Automatically option is turned off (uncheck in Project > Build Automatically).
Errors regarding R should have now disappeared. Now, perform a Project Clean once again. All errors should be gone.
Let me know if this works for you.
Build the project again an do not worry, R.java is generated each time the project is built
I will automatically create by eclipse no need to create by us. just build the project i.e save the changes will automatically build it for u.
R.java file is automatically created when you build the workspace, so it should be generated again with the next cleaning of project, unless you have errors in java or xml files, so check if you have errors in your project and correct them first.
In the eclipse you have down to the clean project you have option Build Automatically try to enable it....
Just click Project > Build Project
When you build the project, you don't get R.java.
You should check external library. Just remove the external library and add external library.
Android projects get tangled easily.
Just Restart the Eclipse will solve this Issue as the workspace will be freshly Build ! go to
File -> Restart
Try this method by first right click on ur project folder -> Close Unrelated Projects!
Its the fastest way to avoid frustration by going it into Build,preferencen,properties,blah blah.....
Moreover, this technique always works when the R.java file is deleted and not restored back immediately !
Evenafter the problem persists then make a new project and add copy ur xml and java files to that project , delete the previous one . . . .
I had a similar problem: building the project, the R.java file was missing. I built the project, but there were errors in the resource XML file. Correct them, then rebuild. When there were no errors anymore, the R.java was recreated and contained all the R.id.xxx items I had inserted in the resource.
This recently happened to me (10 mins ago) for my Android project, and my solution was a mix of things I read in some answers here.
What I did to fix was:
revert to older version (I used Github)
R.java still missing so I deleted "gen" and "bin" folders
R.java was generated and errors disapeared
This was done using Eclipse Luna. Good luck.
Gradle Project Tab
I tried clicking all the stuff under Gradle Projects tab, and noticed a few small errors, example: I had a capital letter in the drawable folder. I ran anything that had to do with processing or updating or generating resources. final one I did was "processDebugResources"
missing R folder
I had also noticed the folder circled in the above image was missing, running "processDebugResources" seemed to have regenerated the folder, although the others I clicked under the Gradle Projects tab could have also helped
I'm trying the new Android Studio. I've exported a project from eclipse, using the build gradle option. I've then imported it in Android Studio. The R.java file under gen has a j in a little red circle on it. And in my source files, I get "cannot resolve symbol R" wherever I have a reference to a resource, e.g. "R.layout.account_list" etc.
I have never used Intellij before. Would appreciate any help as there obviously aren't many answer yet about Android Studio. Thanks!
Press F4 into Project Structure, Check SDKs on left
Click Modules ---> Source Tab, check gen and src as sources
PS: The answer over a year old and the menus have changed.
File -> invalidate caches
then
Restart application
None of the answers on the web so far have helped. Build > Make Project did not work for me. For me it was as simple as choosing this other option (on Android Studio 1.3.1):
Build > Make Module 'module name'
In my case I had an Activity file imported from Eclipse that had the line:
import android.R;
So all of my R classes were resolving to the SDK, as soon as I commented out that line everything compiled correctly to my package. I only noticed the issue when I was moving the project from my Mac to my Windows machine.
This issue starting occurring for me when I started working with build.gradle to incorporate the data necessary (signingConfigs) to build a signed .apk. After what appeared to be a successful build from the command line, I discovered that going into any class using R.* that all R.* references were unresolved.
The answers here didn't help me. I decided to re-import the project and it magically fixed the issue. File/Import Project... and select the build.gradle file in my apps root folder. I would love to know why re-import fixed this :)
This is probably due to a failed resource build
Once the issue is fixed, a mere Build > Rebuild Project will do the trick
Goto File -> Settings -> Compiler now check use external build
then rebuild project
I've been frustrated on many occasions with this problem, especially when intergating a project library as part of another project. In the most recent occurrence of this plagued problem, my Android lib project was using a WebView. It turns out that Gradle builds the R.class file in a sub directory called "web" whose path does not have anything to do with my source code path. When I imported this, my problem was gone. What have I learned? In the future, simply do a file search for R.class and note the path where it is located. Then import the package into your code using that path. It really sucks that you have to manually perform this. Gradle should automatically import packages it generates.
I was also facing the same issue and I went through lot of answer on stackoverflow. Then i found one solution which help me resolve this issue.
Check package name in AndroidManifest.xml file. I forgot to change it while copy pasting another project into new project.
At first check if there is import android.R; in top of your class this happens when auto import in enable in android studio.
after that comment all lines of your code that you use R variable (you can comment entire class or ...)
then run application it regenerates R variable and you can uncomment your code.
Here's what worked for me in IntelliJ (Not Studio), in addition to the replies presented above:
You need to attach an Android facet to an existing Android module. To do this, select the module from the module list in 'Module Settings', hit the '+' button on top and select 'Android'. See https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/webhelp/enabling-android-support.html.
The solution is to open project structure window. [by press command+; on mac ox s. i don't what's the key shortcut for other platforms. you should be able to find it under "File" menu.]
and click "Modules" under "Project settings" section, then your project is revealed, finally mark the generated R.java as Sources.
I am using Intellij idea 14.0 CE.
The generated R.java is located at build/generated/source/r/debug/com/example/xxx
Really not easy to find for the first time.
Follow the five steps below:
Step 1 ===>Delete(CTRL X) the additional tag(s) in XML manifest file.
Step 2 ===>Open Build-->Clean project.
Step 3 ===>Open XML manifest file and past the last additional tag(s) like:
Tag Manifest file example:
(<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.VIBRATE"></uses-permission>)
Step 4 ===>Step 2 again.
Step 5 ===> Open Tool-->Android-->Sync project with 'Gradle'.
I have had the same problem but after all the steps it's work for me.
On IntelliJ 14
Check if the generated sources are excluded. Usually in Project Structure -> [module] -> Paths -> Compiler output: "Inherit compile output path"
My problem was that I had file 'default.jpg' in drawable folder and for some reason every resource was not resolved. Fixed after deleting that file!
You should check all your files if it don't have errors and again rebuild your project in:
Build > Rebuild Project.
Or in:
File > Settings > Build, Execution, Deployment > Compiler
Check use external build and after rebuild the project.
After you tried Clean and Rebuild without success, check your res folder for corrupted files.
In my case a corrupted .png file caused all the trouble.
Regarding the following, from Crossle Song's answer
Press F4 into Project Structure, Check SDKs on left
Click Modules ---> Source Tab, check gen and src as sources
Despite the message "We will provide a UI to configure project settings later....etc" this worked for me.
None of these answers helped me!
My problem was not a problem! The program could compile completely and run on the device but the IDE has given me an annoying syntax error. It has underlined the lines of codes that included "R.".
The way that I could solve this issue:
I just added these three classes in "myapp/gen/com.example.app/" folder:
BuildConfig
package com.example.app;
public final class BuildConfig {
public final static boolean DEBUG = true;
}
Manifest
package com.example.app;
public final class Manifest {
}
R
package com.example.app;
public final class R {
}
I solve that problem setting JAVA_HOME, CLASSPATH.
People sometimes skip JAVA_HOME and CLASSPATH when setting Java_path.
So try to check Environment Variable.
CLASSPATH -> .;
JAVA_HOME -> C:\Program Files\Java\jdk(version) or where Java installed
and then check the xml file which can have error(Do not naming well-known things such as button,text etc)
In my case (Linux, Android Studio 0.8.6 ) the following helps :
File > Project Structure > Modules > select main module > select its facet > Generated Sources
change value of "Directory for generated files:"
from
MY_PATH/.idea/gen
to
MY_PATH/gen
Without that code is compiled, apk is build and run successfully
but Android Studio editor highlights mypackage.R.anything as "cannot resolve" in all sub-packages classes
I had the same problem and got it fixed by deleting an extra library.
To do try this solution go to File > Project Structure (on a mac you can use the command "Apple ;")
Then select app on the left tab. Go to the dependencies tab and delete the extra library.
check the build tools version in build.gradle(for module app). Then go to android sdk manager see if the version is installed if not install it or change the build tools version to the one which is installed like below.
android {
buildToolsVersion "22.0.1"
..
..
..
}
The solution posted by https://stackoverflow.com/users/1373278/hoss
above worked for me. I am reproducing it here because I cannot yet comment on hoss' post:
Remove import android.R;
from your activity file in question.
My setup:
Android Studio 1.2.2
Exported project from one Mac to Git (everything was working). I then imported the project on another Mac from Git. Thats when it stopped resolving the resource files.
I tried everything on this thread:
invalidating cache and restart
Delete .iml files and .idea folder and reimport project
Clean and Rebuild project
Nothing worked except removing import android.R; from my activity java file.
To avoid this issue in the future add .idea folder to your .gitignore file. There is a nice plugin from git for gitignore in Android Studio. Install this plugin and right click in .idea > Add to .gitignore
just clean project and then sync your project with gradle file.
In my case, I found that "android.R.layout.account_list" was referenced instead of "R.layout.account_list". Simply remove "android." can fix the problem. Hope this help because sometimes you may overlook when you are too focusing.
In my case:
I had to Copy Reference the R file; i.e. right click gen/<package>/R and Copy Reference. Then paste that over the R in your code where it fails to resolve.
That solved it for me (after trying everything else here). Still not sure why it worked to be honest.
I had this same issue. The package name was wrong in two of the following three files. I manually updated the package name and everything started working again.
gen/com/example/app/BuildConfig.java
gen/com/example/app/Manifest.java
gen/com/example/app/R.java
I'm not sure what caused them to change as I've never modified these files before.
Had this error when importing project from Eclipse. The reason was some of the xml files had errors. Check ALL your XML files for errors. Including androidmanifest.xml, and values, themes, styles, layouts folders, etc. Warnings in xml are ok, but errors will generate this error.
Afterwards, do a Clean Project and rebuild.
For me, with Android Studio 1.5.1, the solution was to recreate the whole project with a slightly different name.
I think it didn't handle the app name "Kommentator_AS", because several places the package was named"Kommentator" instead.
After I added some .png files into my Project Workspace drawable folder I refreshed my drawable folders in Eclipse and the newly added files showed up. But when I tried to access those resources using R.drawable.xyzimage, xyzimage although in the folder could not be resolved.
So I did a Project Clean and guess what after this clean R.java is totally gone and all my classes accessing resources using R.java is showing all sorts of error and Eclipse won't let me run the code anymore.
I have backup of my source code but I want to explore if R.java can be regenerated and how?
Thanks for all the help.
Try Project->Clean in Eclipse. In my limited experience if R.java is not being automatically created then there is an error somewhere in your xml. Triple check everything.
Here is what the problem was. I added those new png images to the project and android has rules as to what characters are allowed in the names of these images. Once I changed the uppercase letters in the image name, it was back on track again and Build Automatically generated the R.java file and all errors were gone. Eclipse console is the place where I found all the errors related to my resources.
Thanks Guys....I tried your solutions but my error was something specific which was due to my image naming convention so this is the way I fixed it.
I would agree this is usually a XML problem but moreover that it is something within your res folder that is the problem and may be highlighted with a red cross after the clean attempt.
I have just had this problem and it was because I had created my own folder called 'data' within res folder. After the clean it had a little red cross against it. I removed this folder and R built again.
Regards,
Mark
Several things you should check in your project:
Check the Problems tab in your Eclipse IDE. Are you sure that you did not introduced building problems while making changes with drawables? To check that you need to check xml source of affected layout and see if something is marked red.
In File explorer go to the directory where your Android project is. Check that you have file default.properties (.classpath, .project and AndroidManifest.xml should be there). If default.properties is missing it may be easily replaced by correct version.
Which is the Android version you are working with? If that is 1.5 or lower be sure that in the res directory you have directory named drawable, not drawable-hdpi, drawable-mdpi and drawable-ldpi. Last three are valid for version 1.6 and higher.
Right click on your project in Package explorer in Eclipse. You will get a number of options. Go to Android Tools-> Fix Project Properties so see if that helps.
I had an invalid jpg in my res/drawable folder. I removed the jpg and it worked.
I had this problem on my Mac too and I think it could be good to know for all Mac users how I managed to solve this error.
I had a .DSStore file automatically imported to my project inside the res directory and when I removed it and rebuilt the project all went well.
Everytime you clean the project and it rebuilds, it imports
import.android.R
so, delete this import and remove all errors from xml files. It will work.
This happens to me if I move my project to a new location. I have found that the answers above didn't fix my problem, but that creating a new project and importing the source did.
This may be simple but check to make sure you don't use
import android.R;
If you add an external resource file with capital letters for example
"Hello.png or WelcomeSound.mp3 etc etc" like if you add upper case letters and clean your project you'd surely loose your R.java file. So if you already lost it, either rename the file externally and then clean your project or else right click on the project Refractor->Rename and then rename your file with all letters in lower casing. Next, delete the 'gen' folder in the project explorer and now right click and "Build Project". If Build Project option is grayed out, go to Project-> Deselect "Build Automatically" option.

Kshitij Thube
Check at the Console View If there in message Error, It will Help you to find out the source of the probleme.
I had i similar probleme and i find out that the probleme was from the pic name even if the name respect the Syntax so I change it to img1 and it worked fine.
Try editing one line of code in your project, then build the project once more.
Another thing: never try to run an application with the texteditor opened with a xml file. That will create a wierd run configuration that can only be fixed by project clean-up and sometimes can make the xml file to vanish (happened to me twice already).
All my R.* files stopped working after I did a Project->clean in Eclipse. The issue was that I backed up a XML file attached to one of my activities in the layout directory. This causes errors in every activity of my project.
After deleting the file I still had R errors in one of my Activities and it only was resolved after I tried importing different files and then deleting them. I actually made no change to the previous imports but for some reason deleting them all and re-pasting them fixed it.
I have got the same problem after lots of cleaning and building project again and again. I found that on console there is this error:
res/drawable-hdpi/Blue Blank.png: Invalid file name: must contain only [a-z0-9_.]
and this is not appearing as an error in xml. I changed the name and save the file, clean project and build. Now it's working. My suggestion check your res folder and name of files you use in it and name only [a-z0-9_.].
Delete related tag in xml, save xml, clean project, build project. Now again put that resource in xml and save!
Check your file in drawable folder ensure that all are resource file (image) remove unwanted file Like thumb.db. Remove those all files and check again
Make sure your png files have lowercase names. That is what kept throwing mine out, because I capitalized the first letter, or I used an unallowed non alpha numeric in the naming. Check that before destroying any of your code.
just check your image folder (usually created res > drawable files) and be sure dont use capital letters on .png files, every type must be in small letters then you can find again your R.java under the gen file folder
i removed 'import android.R;' then commented out the offending lines, then did a build, ok
then i removed the comment and it fixed it
I had the same problem when I cleaned my project. I got crazy to solve it, I searched and searched but solved it in my way.
First of all, delete all needless files in your /res folder. I had some notes in it, I took them to another project that I don't work on it and build the project manually. It worked! Try this I'm sure it will help.
Good developing!
Was there an XML file with the naming convention of "somthing.out.xml" generated? If so you should delete this file (an unwanted file of this name can cause major problems for your somthing.somthing.R file import).
In some versions of eclipse (I know eclipse javaEE does this for sure), running the project while viewing an XML file will create a file called filename.out.xml in your res->layout folder. You must delete this generated file if this has occurred otherwise you wont be able to get the java.R file to import.
Try Project -> check Build Automatically
If you are using 64-bit Ubuntu, try to install the 32-bit libraries (ia32-libs)
$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
it worked for me
This exact same thing happened to me. coincidentally I needed to update my adk that day, so i did so and after restarting eclipse it worked again. My recommendation would be to build the project and restart eclipse. It is not due to any error in your code.
I read and tried many of the above after simply doing a clean on one project. Eclipse would not build anything afterwards.
Fortunately I had last-nights backup of the workspace and my source is copied in from VS 2010.
No more cleaning!
Delete your project from workspace witout source deleting and then import it into workspace.
RightClick on your Project -> Delete /Don't select "Delete project content on disk (cannot be undone)"/ -> Ok
File -> Import -> General -> Existing Projects into Workspace -> Brouse -> /Look for your workspace(!) folder/ -> Ok -> /your cleaned project will be automatically checked/ -> Finish
I had the dreaded missing R problem yesterday with Eclipse Juno after a routine clean. StackExchange is full of suggestions and extensive googling revealed only the usual suspects (XML naming conventions problems, etc) none of which seemed to apply directly, although it is certainly possible I missed something.
The best summary comprehensive list of possible causes and fixes was here:
http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/software-engineer/a-comprehensive-troubleshooting-guide-for-androids-r-cannot-be-resolved-error/
One useful tip there was to try to create and run a simple "Hello World" in my workspace. If that does not run, the setup is corrupted. My Hello World was just as full of errors as my custom app.
The solution that worked for me (perhaps great overkill but nothing else worked) was to completely uninstall Android SDK and delete Eclipse (Juno), download Eclipse for Developers (Kepler) and reinstall Android ADT plugin and ADK and recreated my AVDs using the latest "compile with" version in options.
So far so good, although I am recreating the app from scratch. I will be more cautious about using clean from here on.
I have same problem occur just now I renamed invalid png file like *demo.1.png as demo.png * and its work.
Proven successful method, check the file (AndroidManifest.xml) and delete all comments in it, and make sure there are no errors in this file, I tried and did work with me.
