I'd like to change weight of a ViewFlipper programmatically.
I have a TableRow in which I have 2 columns. The first column contains a RelativeLayout element when the second column contains a ViewFlipper.
My ViewFlipper contains 2 views. Somehow in my Java code, I change the visible view of my ViewFlipper when I click on a button. What I want to do is to be able, when I change the ViewFlipper view (by calling showNext()), to change the ViewFlipper weight in order for it to be larger in the screen.
In other words, the first column of my row has a weight=1 and the second (the ViewFlipper) has a weight=0.8. When I click on a button I want to change those weights programmatically.
Is that possible ? How ? Below is my XML code.
I've searched on the Web, I found this solution:
myFlipper.setLayoutParams(new LinearLayout.LayoutParams(LinearLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, LinearLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, 0.3f));
This doesn't work, it crashes, which is, I think normal as the ViewFlipper isn't a LinearLayout.
Here is my XML code:
<TableRow
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:background="#00000000" >
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/rltest"
android:layout_width="0dip"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:layout_centerInParent="true"
android:paddingLeft="6px"
android:paddingRight="6px"
android:background="#00000000" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/tvtest"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="60px"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:textColor="#FFFFFF"
android:textSize="22px"
android:singleLine="true"
android:background="#00000000"
android:gravity="center_vertical" />
</RelativeLayout>
<ViewFlipper
android:id="#+id/flipper"
android:layout_width="0dip"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_weight="0.8"
android:background="#00000000" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/tvName"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="60px" />
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/lltest"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="60px"
android:layout_centerInParent="true"
android:background="#00000000"
android:gravity="center" />
</ViewFlipper>
</TableRow>
Do you have any idea ?
Thanks
My guess: you should be using TableRow.LayoutParams, not LinearLayout.LayoutParams. But that's just a guess without seeing the actual error; any time you ask a question about a crash on SO you should really include the log with the traceback of your error.

I have a keyword search option with EditView and a button in my android app, which in ADT looks perfect.
But when i run the program, the EditView expand beyond the viewing area and search button disappears because it goes out of page.
Xml for this is:
<TableRow
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/detail_ll"
style="#style/search_bg_style"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
<EditText
android:id="#+id/keyword_detail"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="0.7"
android:ems="10"
android:hint="#string/keyword" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/button_search"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="0.3"
android:text="#string/search" />
</LinearLayout>
</TableRow>
Please help me in getting this in viewing area..
can you post the entire xml?
i mean with the
<TableLayout />
main tag
try setting android
android:layout_weight="1"
for both
or try android:layout_weight="1.5"
for edit text and
android:layout_weight="0.5"
for the button
I think you should make the android:layout_width="wrap_content" to android:layout_width="match_parent" or any fixed width (in dps) in the TableRow element.
layout_weight attribute divides a pre-known space according to its weight which is not present in this case.
Here you have to TableRow and LinearLayout height MatchParent and
give Weightsum="1" to LinearLayout it will fixed your problem and also remove android:ems property from Edittext
Hope this Help you.
I'm attempting to create a a Heading + button similar to the Google Music App, e.g. where there is a "Songs" Header on the Left and then on the right there is a Button with the text "X more"..
I've using a RelativeLayout for the TextView and Button
My problem is that the button is taking up the size of the layout that contains the text the height is all wrong and the padding doesn't seem to do anything.
<ScrollView
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent" >
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical" >
[REMOVED for clarity]
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="#color/list_foreground"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:padding="10dp"
android:text="#string/photos"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceMedium" />
<Button
android:id="#+id/photo_button"
style="?android:attr/buttonStyleSmall"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:background="#color/actionbar_background"
android:padding="10dp"
android:text="test" />
</RelativeLayout>
What am I doing wrong here?
RelativeLayouts are designed to have children in the layout "relative" to each other. In other words, if you want the Button to the right of the Textview, you need to tell it.
Because you are aligning relative to the parent LEFT / RIGHT, it appears that things are "kind of" working.
You may be better off with a LinearLayout, depending on your needs. LinearLayouts use "orientation" not RelativeLayouts.
You should look over some tutorials (like this one: http://mobile.tutsplus.com/tutorials/android/android-layout/) but ultimately you will probably put your button in first and then your text view so that the textview content will wrap appropriately.
To get the same effect as the Music App I ended up using a RelativeLayout but instead of a Button I'm using another TextView, this is giving the impression it's a button but it gives me more scope to format the background etc. I think just setup a OnClickListener in the code
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/photo_title">
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_marginLeft="10dp"
android:text="#string/photos"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/more_photo_text"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
android:layout_marginRight="10dp"
android:background="#color/actionbar_background"
android:paddingLeft="5dp"
android:paddingRight="5dp"
android:text="10 MORE"
android:textColor="#color/button_text"
android:textSize="12sp" />
</RelativeLayout>
In a layout resource XML, I have 3 RelativeLayout(s) which are inside a main RelativeLayout. The view will be shown vertically. These 3 RelativeLayout() are set next to each other, and I want them to fill the whole screen, doesnt matter what will be the screen size. My, layout view:
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:background="#drawable/backg"
>
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/imageView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_marginTop="#dimen/top_mr_image"
android:src="#drawable/temp" />
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/r1"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_below="#+id/imageView1"
android:layout_marginLeft="10dp"
android:background="#drawable/r1bg"
android:layout_weight="1"
>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_marginLeft="#dimen/txt_mr_right"
android:layout_marginRight="#dimen/txt_mr_right"
android:layout_marginTop="39dp"
android:text="S"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView2"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_below="#id/textView1"
android:layout_marginLeft="#dimen/txt_mr_right"
android:layout_marginRight="#dimen/txt_mr_right"
android:text="T"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge" />
</RelativeLayout>
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/r2"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_alignTop="#+id/r1"
android:layout_toRightOf="#+id/r1"
android:layout_weight="1" >
</RelativeLayout>
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/r3"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_alignTop="#+id/r2"
android:layout_toRightOf="#+id/r2"
android:layout_weight="1" >
</RelativeLayout>
I set weight=1 and layout_width=0dp for each relativeLayout and this technique works with buttons, I thought the same will be with relativeLayout, seems my thoughts were wrong. Any idea?
UPD1: I have added an image of what I would like to have
RelativeLayout does not pay attention to android:layout_weight. (That's a property of LinearLayout.LayoutParams, but not of RelativeLayout.LayoutParams.)
You should be able to get the layout you want with a much simpler view hierarchy. It's not clear what you are trying to do, since the last two RelativeLayouts are empty. If you need a purely vertical organization, I'd suggest using LinearLayout instead of RelativeLayout.
EDIT Based on your edit, it looks like you want a horizontal layout of three compound views, each one clickable. I think something like the following will work:
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
>
<!-- First column -->
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/firstColumn"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:gravity="center_horizontal"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_weight="1"
>
<ImageView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:src="..." />
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:text="text 1"
. . . />
</LinearLayout>
<!-- Second column -->
<LinearLayout . . . >
. . .
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
If the contents of the buttons aren't correct, you can replace the second-level LinearLayout views with RelativeLayout if that helps organize the layout better.
RelativeLayouts do not support weight. You need to use a LinearLayout as a parent container if you want to use weights.
Solution is very simple. I have been looking for weight distribution in relative layout.
It's a small trick for all these kind situations.
Use LinearLayout with android:orientation="horizontal"
You can use Horizontally oriented LinearLayout Manager in the Recycler View, and place each RelativeLayout in each item, of its Adapter.
The Link: How to build a Horizontal ListView with RecyclerView?
If your RelativeLayouts are set to a fixed width and height, that is to the size of the Screen, that you can get from DisplayMatrics, that will be OK.
The Link: Get Screen width and height
If the contents of your RelativeLayouts are different, then you can use getItemViewType() method.

Happy Coding :-)
I am trying to build a UI, where in I have a linear layout which has been defined in the XML.
As per the user's input, I need to add some TextViews to this linear layout. I am able to do this.
My actual problem is, when I have more text views, they are stacked next to each other and some of text views text are hidden or stretched vertically as shown in the image below.
I would like to use the whole width of the linear layout and if the text view can not fit in this row, it should be put in a new row or below the first text view.. I would like the display to be as below.
Following is my Linear layout configuration in XML:
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/RL1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="center_vertical"
android:paddingBottom="5dip"
android:paddingTop="5dip" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/text1"
android:layout_width="85dip"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
android:gravity="left"
android:text="Lable 1"
android:textColor="#999999" />
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/LL1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#+id/button1"
android:layout_toRightOf="#+id/text1"
android:gravity="left|center_vertical"
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:paddingLeft="5dip"
android:paddingRight="5dip"
android:paddingTop="3dip" >
</LinearLayout>
<Button
android:id="#+id/button1"
android:layout_width="30dip"
android:layout_height="30dip"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
android:layout_marginTop="2dip"
android:background="#drawable/plus"
android:clickable="true"
android:focusable="true"
android:paddingTop="5dip" />
</RelativeLayout>
Can any one please help me in how to realign the same in java code.
I would Like to suggest you about how you can provide equal sizes to all your views in Linear Layout,you can do that by using weight property in the XML file i.e., android:weight for that particular View and when you use this property you should give width=0dp or 0dip.I think this will solve your problem easily.
Please I suggest you first you take full Knowledge of how to use this property in the following Link:-Weight property with an example
Please see:
How to wrap Image buttons in a horizontal linear layout?
How can I do something like a FlowLayout in Android?
You also might search github for FlowLayout.java.
An alternative approach is given in:
Android - multi-line linear layout
In addition, there's a class that adds images into a TextView:
https://stackoverflow.com/a/21250752/755804
which is not the same as wrapping views in the general case, but sometimes may do the job.
i'm korean.
so i don't speak English well, but i'll help you.
first, Create 'item.xml' with four text boxes.
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<CheckBox
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/set_checkbox"/>
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/text2"
android:text="0"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:gravity="center"/>
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/text3"
android:text="0"
android:layout_weight="4"
android:gravity="center"/>
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/text4"
android:text="0"
android:layout_weight="4"
android:gravity="center"/>
</LinearLayout>
second, Create 'main.xml' where 'item.xml' will be dynamically generated.
'orientation' helps to create one line at a time.
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical">
</LinearLayout>
Finally, You can create four TextView per line using the code below.
LinearLayout layout = (LinearLayout)findViewById(R.id.mainxml);
LinearLayout item = (LinearLayout)layout.inflate(this.getContext(), R.layout.itemxml, null);
LinearLayout.LayoutParams params = new LinearLayout.LayoutParams(MATCH_PARENT, WRAP_CONTENT);
item.setLayoutParams(params);
CheckBox cb = item.findViewById(R.id.set_checkbox);
TextView text2 = item.findViewById(R.id.text2);
TextView text3 = item.findViewById(R.id.text3);
TextView text4 = item.findViewById(R.id.text4);
cb.setChecked(true);
text2.setText("text2");
text3.setText("text3");
text4.setText("text3");
layout.addView(item);
The 10th loop is shown in the following picture.
enter image description here
Looks like there's a plenty of questions about centering, same size etc, but so far I didn't find the exactly my case so I dare to ask :)
What I need is a layout of three buttons like this:
[ previous ][*select*] [ next ]
where [previous] and [next] buttons are of the same size (i.e. in this case, size of the [previous] button as it is bigger), and the [*select*] button should stretch to occupy all of the available width.
Following the hints of making two buttons in LinearLayout same sized, i came up with the following xml file:
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/button_bar"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:orientation="horizontal" >
<Button
android:layout_width="0dip"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="Previous" />
<Button
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="2"
android:text="Select" />
<Button
android:layout_width="0dip"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="Next" />
</LinearLayout>
This almost works :)
Except one thing: instead of making Next button to match the size of Previous button, android makes Previous button to be the size of the Next :)
And because of this the text "Previous" gets wrapped in two lines, like
Previ
ous
Dunno if this is a bug or not, but can you advice me a workaround or some another way to achive the desired layout?
Thank you!
I'd suggest using a RelativeLayout
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/buttons"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:clickable="false">
<Button
android:id="#+id/previous"
android:layout_width="30dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Previous"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"/>
<Button
android:id="#+id/next"
android:layout_width="30dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Next"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"/>
<Button
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Select"
android:layout_toRightOf="#id/previous"
android:layout_toLeftOf="#id/next" />
</RelativeLayout>
This should work.
If you are including "android:layout_weight" you should give either "android:layout_width" or "android:layout_height" as "fill_parent"
modify your code like this
<LinearLayout
android:id="#+id/button_bar"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:orientation="horizontal" >
<Button
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="2"
android:text="Previous" />
<Button
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1.5"
android:text="Select" />
<Button
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="2"
android:text="Next" />
In that sort of case I would go for a TableLayout, in which you have one row, and a weight of 1 for EACH button. and the stretchColumn attribute put to column 1. Does this make any difference?
I'm not sure if you can match a size to some other besides by doing this in code. The easiest solution is probably adjusting the previous and next button widths in dp/sp units until they look good and have the select button be the only one with the layout_weight attribute.
