android: Moving through activities without popping them - android

I have the following I wish to achieve:
Activity A -> Activity B
Activity B -> Activity A
On paper it sounds like the same thing as just hitting the back button. Problem is, I don't want Activity B to be popped.
I need something along the lines of moveTaskToBackground but for a single activity. That way when I go back to it from A again, it can resume.
To give you some context, Activity A is a list of items. Activity B displays information about the item and plays a song attached to it. While going back from B to A, I want that song to keep playing, that way if the person hits the same option in A they just resume the activity. Otherwise kill that activity and start a new one with the new details and play the new song.

You need to look into ActivityGroup and LocalActivityManager. TabActivity (as suggested in other answer) actually extends ActivityGroup.
Here is a quick example to get you started:
Use this to start activity A:
LocalActivityManager manager = getLocalActivityManager();
//A_ID == 1
Window activityWindow = manager.startActivity(A_ID, intent_activityA);
setContentView(activityWindow.getDecorView());
or this to start activity B:
//B_ID == 2
Window activityWindow = manager.startActivity(B_ID, intent_activityB);
setContentView(activityWindow.getDecorView());
Activities are cached and associated with specified IDs. If you invoke startActivity with the same id several times, then cached activity is actually used (not always, depends on intents you use). You can easily remove any activity from cache if you need. Look into LocalActivityManager for more details.

You can use a TabActivity to switch between activities. You can do the switching within the code. Just hide the tabs in your UI.

Activity back tracking in Activity stack - Android

I am having two activities, Activity A and activity B.
Activity A starts activity B.
So, the activity stack after some interactions will look like A -> B -> A -> B.
The problem:
I need to go the first activity A in the stack from activity B (last B in the stack). I am using FLAG_CLEAR_TOP as well as Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK for achieving the same.
Right now, the activity A (stack pos 3) will be shown from activity B, but when I press back button, the activity B will be shown again (since activity B (stack pos 2) is already there in the stack).
How do I overcome this issue?
PS: I tried using launchMode singleInstance and singleTask for activities A and B, but that solution doesn't work for my app.
Thanks in advance.
Add finish (); after switching activites like
Intent intent = new Intent (activity_a.this, activity_b.class);
startActivity(intent);
finish ();
Avoid creating multiple instances of activities if possible. Android isn't designed to allow you to identify (and return to) a specific instance of an Activity in the stack, if you have multiple instances of the same Activity in the stack.
Depending on your application, there are different ways to solve the problem.
One way that may work for you is to use <activity-alias>, which allows you to reuse an existing Activity implementation by another name.
Another way would be to create another Activity class, that just inherits from the original, so that you have 2 classes with exactly the same code, but with different names.
The best way is to rearchitect your application so that you only ever have one instance of each Activity alive at any given time. You can do this by rearranging the task stack using Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_REORDER_TO_FRONT.

Could someone please explain FLAG_ACTIVITY_PREVIOUS_IS_TOP

I have an Android app with multiple activities. The main activity communicates over a network and can launch or dismiss various other activities depending on commands it receives over the network. When an Activity is dismissed I don't want to finish() it, just move it down the stack so it's no longer the top activity. What I really need is a FLAG_ACTIVITY_REORDER_TO_BOTTOM but there is no such thing.
There's an intent flag called FLAG_ACTIVITY_PREVIOUS_IS_TOP and the name implies something like that but I don't understand the description:
"If set and this intent is being used to launch a new activity from an
existing one, the current activity will not be counted as the top
activity for deciding whether the new intent should be delivered to
the top instead of starting a new one. The previous activity will be
used as the top, with the assumption being that the current activity
will finish itself immediately"
Could someone please decode that for me, and if it's not what I want IS there some way to tell an activity to submerge itself below the previous one?
This isn't possible. The activities are stacked and you cant put one back under the other. It sounds like you may want to create a class that extends Android’s android.app.Application.
I found this tutorial online and it looks good. Good luck.
Extending Android's android.app.Application tutorial
You cannot move an activity below a certain activity into the android back Stack. The only way to move a activity in back stack is to open another activity on top of it. You can move an activity on top by creating a single instance of activity using FLAG 'singleTop' in this way your activity will be moved to the top of another activity and only a single instance of activity will be there in stack.
More information about activity back stack and Flags is available here.
Go through this information and all your doubts will get cleared about back stack.

Android - Out of Memory Error due to starting a lot of Activities started

I have an application that implements somewhat like having a top page.
So like, i have this activities:
TopActivity , FirstActivity, SecondActivity, ThirdActivity and FourthActivity.
Each activities has a button that when you press it, it will bring you back ti the TopActivity.
The way I implemented this one is every time that button is pressed, I start an activity, a new TopActivity. So, every time a top activity button is pressed, it always create a new activity. If I also will finish() the TopActivity when it goes to first, second and third, I can not go to TopPAge using back button. Are there itger ways to do this?
Any help is greatly apprieciated.
You can use a different Launch Mode for you activities. The launch modes decides when and how to create a new Activity or reuse a previous one.
The singleTask launch mode seems like it would do the trick for you:
The system creates the activity at the root of a new task and routes
the intent to it. However, if an instance of the activity already
exists, the system routes the intent to existing instance through a
call to its onNewIntent() method, rather than creating a new one.

How can i manage my activities and finish them properly?

I am new in android and I have total 6-7 activities in my application. I want to know how can I manage my activities properly means when I move to the A->B->C->D like that. Then how can I move that the stack of these activities not created.
On moving from one activity to the other I am using the below code:
Intent intent=new Intent(current.this,next.class);
startActivityForResult(intent, 0);
And now if I want to move back on the earlier activity I used the code as:
Intent start = new Intent(current.this,next.class);
startActivity(start);
finishActivity(0);
Is there a special reason that you don't want to use the activity stack and let the activities handle themselves?
The Android system has done a very good job with the activity lifecycle. It allows you to start an Activity from different places without confusing the user because the back button will bring the user back to a different activity.
If you don't have a very good reason to not use the Android guideline try to stick to the way the system is doing it. Every other thing will only give you problems.
You are starting activities for a result but how I understand you you will never return to them.
You can start an Activity and after that just finish the current Activity. That way the activity will not be put on the back stack. Now you need to listen for back button pushes and create the activities that you want to bring the user to.
If you want to move from Activity A to D like going to the start/home screen of you app you do the following:
Intent goBackToA = new Intent(context, StdActivity.class);
goBackToA.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP);
startActivity(goBackToA);
The flag FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP will tell the system that if the backstack contains an instance of the Activity this activity will be shown and all activity that are between the current activity and the target activity are removed from the backstack. This allows you to go back to a home activity without creating huge loops that the user can move through with the back button.
To move back to the previous activity you don't have to create a new intent, you can simply call this.finish() on the one that should dissapear.
To move back to the previous activity you don't have to create a new intent, you can simply call this.finish() on the one that should dissapeear or you can press Back button to see the previous Activity .
whenever you want to navigate from one class to another use this code, may be this help you to navigate the Activity,
Intent nextpage = new Intent(CurrentActivity.this,NextActivity.class);
startActivity(nextpage);
this.finish();

How do you skip parts of an Activity stack when returning results in Android?

I'm making an app which has a flow roughly as below:
User starts on the main screen with an empty list, hits menu, and goes to "add item." (Activity A)
User is given a new activity which allows them to specify search criteria, then hits "go" to do a search. (Activity B)
User gets a list of results, and can click on one of them to view more details. (Activity C)
User sees details of item, and can use a menu item to save it to their list in Activity A. (Activity D)
Right now, I am having each Activity call each other Activity for results, and then it is passing the result all the way back up the stack as it returns to Activity A.
Is there a way to jump this, since all I want is for a result in Activity D to get to Activity A directly?
Note that a user should still be able to navigate backwards (using the back button) through each activity, but if they explicitly save the item in Activity D, I want it to jump straight to Activity A.
I recommend just invoking the activities (not using the *ForResult) calls, then having activity D invoke Activity A with an INTENT_ADD_ITEM with data, then have Activity A add the item.
Hope this helps...
Just so that people can benefit from what I learned later...
The key to solving this problem is using flags with Intent, in this case using FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP. Other flags are useful as well in controlling the flow of your UI.
It is a bad idea to try to solve this problem by chaining startActivityForResult() through activities. It means that it's difficult to change the flow of your application.
