I was wondering if there is an easier way (or any way) to start a Browser with a Google search query. For example user can select a certain word or phrase and click a button and the activity will start the browser with the Google search query.
Thank you.
The Intent class defines an action specifically for web searches:
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/content/Intent.html#ACTION_WEB_SEARCH
Here's an example of how to use it:
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_WEB_SEARCH);
intent.putExtra(SearchManager.QUERY, query); // query contains search string
startActivity(intent);
You can do this quite easily with a few lines of code (assuming you want to search Google for 'fish'):
String escapedQuery = URLEncoder.encode(query, "UTF-8");
Uri uri = Uri.parse("http://www.google.com/#q=" + escapedQuery);
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, uri);
startActivity(intent);
Otherwise, if you would rather start up your own Activity to handle the browsing, you should be able to do so with a WebView: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/webkit/WebView.html
I think the better answer here is #zen_of_kermit's. It would be nice though, if Android allowed a user to provide the Search engine has an extra though for the ACTION_WEB_SEARCH, rather than just using Google.
the # gave me trouble:
Uri uri = Uri.parse("https://www.google.com/search?q="+query);
Intent gSearchIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, uri);
activity.startActivity(gSearchIntent);
I recently tried this. This appears to work fine. If any modifications to be done let me know as I am new to android development.
mEdit = (EditText)findViewById(R.id.editText);
in your click view,
String q = mEdit.getText().toString();
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_WEB_SEARCH );
intent.putExtra(SearchManager.QUERY, q);
startActivity(intent);
String Search= null;
try {
Search= URLEncoder.encode(s, "UTF-8");
} catch (UnsupportedEncodingException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
Uri uri = Uri.parse("http://www.google.com/#q=" + Search);
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, uri);
startActivity(intent);
}
});

I was trying to launch an Intent which will launch a browser and search query on Google. But the problem is that it is directly launching the search query on Google app instead of any browser. I have tested this on emulator and also in my Android device.
My Approach :
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_WEB_SEARCH);
intent.putExtra(SearchManager.QUERY,queryText);
startActivity(intent);
you can open browser using below intent
try{
String escapedQuery = URLEncoder.encode("Android developer", "UTF-8");
Uri uri = Uri.parse("http://www.google.com/#q=" + escapedQuery);
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, uri);
startActivity(intent);
}catch (Exception e){
e.printStackTrace();
}
try {
ourBrowser.loadUrl("http://google.com");
} catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
this code is ok i know but how can i search any site without using Http or www ... like other android browser's . example sometime we type Hello and Google give us all hello worlds with link's....... i m new in android world so please developer's help me out....?
i m also tried this method = ourBrowser.loadUrl("http://google.com"+url);
https://www.google.cz/search?q=search+term
is the thing you want or use it as intent:
Uri uri = Uri.parse("http://www.google.com/#q=fish");
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, uri);
startActivity(intent);
Maybe it's what you need ?
public void launchUrl(String URL){
Intent browserIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW,
Uri.parse("https://www.google.fr/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q="+URL));
startActivity(browserIntent);
}
And you will call it with
launchUrl("MysearchExample");
I am trying to put a simple Google Search in my app. I found this code but it's not exactly what I am searching for. Below the search comes from a given url.
String url = "http://www.google.com";
Intent i = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW);
i.setData(Uri.parse(url));
startActivity(i);
The thing is that I would like to get the search text from user and if possible without starting a new Activity like this one:
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_WEB_SEARCH);
String term = editTextInput.getText().toString();
intent.putExtra(SearchManager.QUERY, term);
startActivity(intent);
Get the text from the user and place that in the URI, then start the intent.
String url = "http://www.google.com/search?q=" + userText;
Intent i = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW);
i.setData(Uri.parse(url));
startActivity(i);
I need to show/interact with a new contact before create it, and I need a simple way to add it to the phone contacts.
this is the code I use:
String contactPhone = "33333333";
Uri contactUri = Uri.parse(String.format("tel: %s", contactPhone));
Intent addContactIntent = new Intent(
ContactsContract.Intents.SHOW_OR_CREATE_CONTACT, contactUri);
addContactIntent.putExtra(ContactsContract.Intents.Insert.NAME, "FirstName" );
addContactIntent.putExtra(ContactsContract.Intents.Insert.COMPANY,"CompanyName");
addContactIntent.putExtra(ContactsContract.Intents.Insert.PHONE,contactPhone);
addContactIntent.putExtra(ContactsContract.Intents.Insert.EMAIL,"contact#email.com");
startActivity(addContactIntent);
and this is the result. The problem is that the Intent show me only the Phone instead all the info added.
ContactsContract.Intents.Insert.ACTION if you want to interact before create it:
Intent intent = new Intent(ContactsContract.Intents.Insert.ACTION,ContactsContract.Contacts.CONTENT_URI);
intent.putExtra(ContactsContract.Intents.Insert.NAME, getName());
intent.putExtra(ContactsContract.Intents.Insert.COMPANY, getCompany());
intent.putExtra(ContactsContract.Intents.Insert.EMAIL, getEmail());
intent.putExtra(ContactsContract.Intents.Insert.PHONE, getPhone());
intent.putExtra(ContactsContract.Intents.Insert.POSTAL, getAddress());
startActivity(intent);
This works pretty well. I hope this will help you.
This site (http://wiresareobsolete.com/2011/10/simplifying-interaction-with-contacts/) shows and gives examples) that SHOW_OR_CREATE_CONTACT can only trigger off "tel" or "mailto"/email for searches.
How can I start an intent to open a Facebook application on a phone and navigate to the prefered page in Facebook?
I tried:
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW);
intent.setClassName("com.facebook.katana", "com.facebook.katana.ProfileTabHostActivity");
intent.putExtra("extra_user_id", "123456789l");
this.startActivity(intent);
Well, whatever I write to "1234567891", it is always navigating to my page. Always to me and not else.
How could I do this?
Here is the best and simple way to do it.
Just follow the code
public final void Facebook() {
final String urlFb = "fb://page/"+yourpageid;
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW);
intent.setData(Uri.parse(urlFb));
// If Facebook application is installed, use that else launch a browser
final PackageManager packageManager = getPackageManager();
List<ResolveInfo> list =
packageManager.queryIntentActivities(intent,
PackageManager.MATCH_DEFAULT_ONLY);
if (list.size() == 0) {
final String urlBrowser = "https://www.facebook.com/pages/"+pageid;
intent.setData(Uri.parse(urlBrowser));
}
startActivity(intent);
}
I had the exactly same problem, sent the user id but for some reason, my profile always opened instead of the friend's profile.
The problem is that if you pass the String of the Long object that represents the Facebook UID, or even a long primitive type, the intent won't be able to read it later. You need to pass a real Long.
So the complete code is:
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW);
intent.setClassName("com.facebook.katana", "com.facebook.katana.ProfileTabHostActivity");
Long uid = new Long("123456789");
intent.putExtra("extra_user_id", uid);
startActivity(intent);
Ok enjoy and hope this helps :-)
Maxim
try this code :
String facebookUrl = "https://www.facebook.com/<id_here>";
try {
int versionCode = getPackageManager().getPackageInfo("com.facebook.katana", 0).versionCode;
if (versionCode >= 3002850) {
Uri uri = Uri.parse("fb://facewebmodal/f?href=" + facebookUrl);
startActivity(new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, uri));
} else {
Uri uri = Uri.parse("fb://page/<id_here>");
startActivity(new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, uri));
}
} catch (PackageManager.NameNotFoundException e) {
startActivity(new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse(facebookUrl)));
}
This solution won't work any more. The new version of the facebook app doesn't support anymore those kind of intents. See here the bug report
The new solution is to use the iPhone scheme mechanism (Yes, facebook decided to support the iPhone mechanism in Android instead of the implicit intent mechanism of Android).
So in order to open the facebook app with a user profile all you need to do is:
String facebookScheme = "fb://profile/" + facebookId;
Intent facebookIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse(facebookScheme));
startActivity(facebookIntent);
If you are looking for other actions you can use the following page for all available actions (/you have to test it though, since I didn't find an official publication of facebook about this)
