I want to change the style of a button in an android app. here is a picture that has both kinds of buttons, the one that I have now, and the one that I want to switch to:
the kinds of buttons that I am using now, look like any of the letters on that keyboard. the ones that I want to use like like the arrows. I would I go about changing this. I prefer to do it in xml but I can do it in java if that is the only way. Thanks
change the background of the Button to a png image with arrows!
in XML use android:background="#drawable/yourimage"
To get more sophisticated control check here,

I need to create a custom button control that will inherit from the same Android style as all other buttons in my application. However, I want to be able to add several lines of text where some characters of the text will be in different colors. Is there anyway to achieve this, I can't seem to see a way?
Currently I have created a view that looks like a button by drawing the background, this is ok but I want the background etc to change with the application style.
You should make your button descend from the generic theme for Widget.Button. This way you can ensure that all the default settings will come through for you.
I would like to change the default orange color that appears when someone press an Android button. I have done many searches but all I found was the use of selectors.
I understand the principle, but I don't want to modify the grey aspect of the normal button (not pressed). But using selectors force to define all characteristics of all aspects (pressed or not).
I don't know how to obtain the default aspect of buttons in the light theme, so can anyone tell me where I can find the original parameters of the light theme or at least give me another means to simply change the color of the button when clicked?
You can copy the Android's selector into your project, the one that Android sets it by default to buttons, and modify only the state when the button is pressed by just changing one single drawable.
You could find the file in \android-sdk\platforms\android-10\data\res\drawable\btn_default.xml
Sorry bro...........
i guess only selector will help you......
You must go with selector.....
and selector are reusable xmls you can use in all buttons.....:)
You can refer below link.

I tried to find a solution to this problem, but did not succeed.
Maybe this will help:
How to modify the default button state in Android without affecting the pressed and selected states?
Standard Android Button with a different color
I have googled this, most of the solutions are using:
1.TabHost with customized style which would cover the separate line between each tab to archive the requirement.
2.On the android developers website, there is a article is using Merge layout to put 2 buttons on top of the background image kind of archive what I want.(http://developer.android.com/resources/articles/layout-tricks-merge.html)
3.What about using button but style the looking like the example below? I don't need the selection, cause each item in the menu will be a button, which takes the user to another page.
I am wondering is there any other solutions apart from these two?
This is something want:
I don't need the menu likes a tab which has selected and unselected, they are better like a button always displaying in certain screen(activity).
Thank you.
You can use simple buttons, and provide any custom background for it. For such simple form as on your screenshot look for this link.
But #Janne write right thing - you should be very careful with transplanting controls from another platforms.
I need to eliminate the gap between buttons in a layout. I'm doing it by setting background color for a style and applying that style to my buttons. This eliminates the highlighting upon press, which I of course need. Here is a solution to this problem, but it requires extra actions to be taken with Java code. Can I make it statically, only with XMLs?
Also, if there is any other way to remove the gap without changing the other aspects of button's appearance - please suggest. The only requirement is it should be done with XML (however, if no other options exist, I can inherit Button class).
You can use StateList xml for background of your button
I am trying to create one custom button which is circular and when i click that button i want that button FOCUS and COLOR change and i don't know how to do exactly so any one can help me or show me that code how to do?
You can use a regular Button and specify custom Drawable for it and then apply it to the Background property of the button. See the ApiDemos for examples of styling controls.
You can use two (or more) drawables for one Button and change the drawables in various states (focus, press, etc). Look at this: http://blog.androgames.net/40/custom-button-style-and-theme/
