I'm having trouble getting an image to scale and center properly in an ImageView.
When up-scaling, there are no problems, but when down-scaling, the image no longer appears to be centred, and the bounds of the ImageView are wrong, like this:

Is this a bug, and has anyone found a workaround?
You should set android:adjustViewBounds="true" as in this answer.
You also need to set either android:layout_width or android:layout_height to be wrap_content, otherwise I believe your hard-coded bounds will override any view bounds adjustments.
Edit: Put this here as it's relevant to those encountering the same symptoms.
This problem is only present in the XML editor - on a real phone or emulator the image is sized and positioned correctly. Depending on the particular image and ImageView dimensions, the editor preview will show the image incorrectly resized and/or out of the view bounds.

NOTE problem solved... it was an issue in the bitmap itself and not the XML layout used to display it... see this comment. No need to read on unless you're curious!
When I set the content of an ImageView (N.B. inside an AppWidget layout) to a bitmap that is smaller than the physical pixel size of the ImageView, I'm sure that in the past (not sure how long ago) the bitmap would just get scaled up to fit... in my case the smaller image is exactly the same aspect ratio as the ImageView so this is exactly the effect I want.
But recently I noticed that this is no longer happening... the bitmap sits in the top left corner. I've tried setting various attributes in the XML layout, but nothing has any effect.
E.g. I've tried:
android:scaleType="fitCenter"
android:scaleType="centerInside"
android:layout_gravity="center"
But still the image sits in the ImageView flush with the top left corner, with gaps to right and bottom.

I want the smaller image to be scaled up to fit the ImageView (it's the same aspect ratio, so it will fit perfectly).

I'm trying to set 1080*1920 image in imageview but it showing white space left and right side. It showing same in all device having resolution of 480*800,720*1280,768*1280,1080*1920,1440*2560. Try:
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
or:
android:layout_width="match_parent"
also make sure whichever container you have the imageview inside is able to fill the full screen.
The resolution you mentioned i.e 1920x1080 is ideally a landscape resolution.
So if you intend to put the image in portrait mode, then try changing the resolution of image to 1080x1920.
Also, as Philip said, make sure the imageview's container is able to fill the screen.

what i don't understand is the gaps at the top & bottom, as I have set both height to wrap_content, the gaps shouldn't be part of the content, only the imageview it self isn't it? Or does it means the gaps are part of the image view it self? but i set the padding to 0. also, for some reason I can get ride of them by setting scale type.
The image probably has another aspect ratio then your imageView.
Try to set the android:scaleType to centerCrop or whatever else does work for you.
The default scale type is: FIT_CENTER and FIT_XY for buttons.

i have this problem frequently, and I refuse to believe that it can't be solved without creating a custom layout:
How do you align a view with an ImageView that get scaled to match it's parent bounds but keeps the aspect ratio ( scale type is anything but fitXY ). I was under the assumption that f you set adjustViewBounds to true, the view bounds get adjusted to match the actual size of the image ("Set this to true if you want the ImageView to adjust its bounds to preserve the aspect ratio of its drawable."). But that is not the case. And it doesn't make and difference if the image has to get scaled up or down to fit its bounds.

As you can see the bounds do not get adjusted and the TextView is aligned to the incorrect bounds. I created a custom Layout to creates the proper bounds, but maybe I'm missing something and it should be possible using the standard layout features...
EDIT: to clarify: i'm looking for a way to align the TextView with the actual image. that is with the red square in the given example.
Ok, so it's been three years and you probably figured this out long ago. But you were halfway there when you specified adjustviewBounds=true. You just needed to change the ImageView layout width and height to wrap_content at the same time.
Your TextView IS aligning to your ImageView just as you requested. If you were to give your ImageView a background color you would see that it occupies the same area as your TextView. It's just that the actual image is centered within the view as you requested.
And you can continue to use scaleType=fitCenter or centerInside depending upon what you want. Neither will crop or stretch the image and your TextView will remain aligned.
What if you use - android:scaleType="centerCrop" on the ImageView?
The image will be cropped to cover the entire layout, but the aspect ratio will be maintained.
I have a 640px wide, 208px tall PNG that I've placed in my /drawable folder and I'm having a very hard time properly placing it in an ImageView. I want to scale the image so that it maxes out the horizontal resolution, and I want it to scale vertically only as much as it takes to stay in proportion.
The problem I am having is that my ImageView ends up taller than it needs to be to fit the image. The image itself looks perfect; as wide as the screen and in proportion. But the ImageView appears to have padding on the top and bottom. From what I can tell it's the drawable that the ImageView contains that's actually too tall.
I can't post an image because I'm new to SO, but if I did it would be of the Graphical Layout view. When I click on the ImageView the regular blue box shows up around it, but with padding on the top and bottom, the same padding I'm seeing on the device. Even if I drag the blue box to attempt to resize the ImageView, I am not allowed to make it any smaller than it already is (perhaps because the ImageView thinks the drawable is that tall, or something). From what I can tell, this may have something to do with the density of the image...the ImageView ends up being 312 pixels tall (208*1.5) on an hdpi device.

I guess android:adjustViewBounds="true" on the ImageView should do the trick. I recently had a similar problem, when I was trying to scale an image to fit the whole width of the view without loosing its proportions.
did you tried the tag : android:scaleType="fitXY" or android:scaleType="centerCrop" on your ImageView ?
