In my android app I have a login screen. A graphic designer has given me this template
The closest I was able to get was this
I used a 9.png (temporarily the same as i use for my buttons)
Any ideas how to pull this off with a combinations of layouts and 9.png files ? I don't want to use a static background image because we want to support all screen sizes...
EDIT : I ended up using two different nine-patch files as the login part also needed to be extendable (the string in the button can vary in length according to phone locale). To put them together i used a relativelayout. I am pretty close to what I wanted to do :

The only part I am not happy about is I had to add padding to align the left and right button
Have your designer cut you a nine-patch with the login tab as part of the non stretched area, but still part of the content area. Stretch that across the whole screen, and then just position the buttons relative to the parent.

I am trying to get the TextView, "tv_amount" to stay on the right side of the screen. I have tried using android:gravity="right" but that hasn't been working for me. Anyone have any suggestions?

I am expecting the transaction or "tv_amount" to stay be right justified so that end of the number is staying towards the right side of the screen.
I tried using :

but these don't seem to work obviously. I am a beginner when it comes to android development and can't seem to find any answers that have helped anywhere else. They all say to use android:gravity or some other alternative. Maybe there is something in my code that doesn't allow that.

I am dumb. The issue wasn't with the code in my individual recycler view layout code. It was with my activity_main.xml. I set the recycler_view width to "wrap_content" when it should have been "match_parent." Rookie mistake.
I have the xml code shown below. Everything is working as it should except the final textView( id locationTextView) which won't stay right. I want it to stay as right as possible, but I can't do that(it still appears straight after the linear Layout).Should I set a left margin?. Try android:layout_weight="1" or some other value for your locationTextView. You can also try out android:weightSum="3" (or that is appropriate instead of 3) on your root LinearLayout. Assign proper weights to your different child views. You can get help here
For showing text in a presentable way, you could use android:ellipsize="marquee" or other options available.
I have a listview that consists three columns. The first one is an ImageView, the second and third one are textviews (see code blow).
I want the list to be aligned like this:
the icon and the date should always been shown completely !!
the text in the middle should show as much chars as possible
the date should always be on the right of the right side
With the XML below it looks ok on my Nexus 4. But on the asus tablet the date should be more on the right and the coloumn in the middle should show more text (screenshot 1). On the AVD (screenshot 2) the coloumn in the middle should be smaller and the date should be shown completely.
Can anyone tell me how to change the XML? Thanks!

The key here is to use wrap_content for the views that just need to keep their size, and set a weight for the middle view, which you want to fill the rest of the row.
Some useful tips.-
fill_parent is deprecated, use match_parent instead
When a view has no children, you can just close it with />
singleLine="true" is enough to have a singleLined TextView
You'll usually want to use dp units instead of px
This should do your job. I have put the imageview on the parents left, the date on the parents right and the label to the rightof image and to the left of date.It should work fine for you. Margins , padding please put yourself

I want the button bar to have wrap_content size policy (can't even have them fixed size because this app has different localizations). This layout is used as a custom layout to a Dialog. No manipulations has been done to the Dialog apart from setting content and title.
Interesting fact: it looks exactly as I want it to (and same as ADT designer shows) on Android 3.1 tablet. But not on 4.1.

This seems silly but it seems to work. Try putting in a nested layout. Change your outer layout width/height to fill parent. Then, inside that make another linear layout with all of your views and such. Give the inner LinearLayout the wrap_content values and that should do it. There's got to be a better way to do it than this but I can't think of it at the moment.
Having a lot of trouble getting an icon to huddle into the position I want it in. I looked at 3 different Stack Overflow questions and tried placing the image in a RelativeLayout, LinearLayout, and a TableRow. All with various XML options. Never managed to get the icon to go right and center itself between top and bottom of the allotted space. In the pic below, red is where it is now, blue is where I want it. There are multiple options, as far as I can tell. I'll give you two:
First option is to set a scaletype on the ImageView containing the overflow icon. You make it take up all remaining available space and set the scaletype to fitEnd. This will position the icon all the way at the right.

You can accomplish the same effect by setting a weight of 1 on the CheckBox, which will make it 'push' the ImageView with the overflow icon all the way to the right (thanks to a TableRow behaving similarly to a LinearLayout). You can then simply make the ImageView wrap its content. You may want to double check if there are no weird side effects to the clickable region in this case though.
