I'm trying to download an apk file that I've signed and exported using the Android wizard in Eclipse in the release mode. I've hosted it on IIS with and set the MIME types as .apk and application/vnd.android.package-archive. I try to open this file on a test Android tablet that I have with me and the download is stuck on 0.00B / 0.00B with filename as <Unknown> and options to pause or cancel downloads.
It's not giving me any errors, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here. Has anyone encountered a similar situation before?
Thanks,
Teja.
Turns out having a self signed (untrusted) certificate for the server you've hosted your app at can cause the problem. Changing servers to one that has the right certificate let me download the app fine.
I'm sure there's a browser setting somewhere that lets you download files from untrusted servers, if anyone can point that out, I'd gladly mark that as the answer.

Using the Sketchware app and Android, I am trying to export to the Google Play store, I have to select the .json for the service account to allow it to publish the app.
However, when I try to select the .json file I have downloaded to my phone, I navigate to the directory the .json file is stored in then when I try to click on it, it is greyed out and I cannot click on it.
(P.S.: I have tried contacting Sketchware support. However, it has been over three days now and I understand due to coronavirus the response may be delayed, but I thought I would ask here if anyone has a solution.)
Why are you publishing the app directly from Sketchware to PlayStore?
You better sign the apk usin APK SIGNER app and manually upload the APK to the Play Console.
I have never used Google Play Console before, but I think this could help you:
Download your app
Using Apk Extractor (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ext.ui) is a software that will help you to get APK file from an pre installed app from Android ONLY. Using this software you can actually get an APK or Android Package that you can use while publishing app
There are many application available on Google Play that can convert your app file to AAB format.
Yes, download Apk editor and select generic key or test key (try them out, there's a few) in settings in the app, and edit the API version to the correct number. And set up a Google Play console account.
Yes, we do have a solution. Send the file to WhatsApp. Then share it from WhatsApp, choose file manager, copy the file to the place that you want, open sketchware, choose the file that you added in the JSON file, and enjoy.
I am trying to make the .apk file available to users. But, I don't want to go through app store. Now, my question is can we place the apk file on server? If yes, how? I tried to upload treating it like a war file and obviously it didn't work. Please suggest how to place it on server and access it.
Thank you!
Upload the APK to your server or any storage online, even a Dropbox can do the job.
Give the link of the APK to your users
Users download it on their phone or tablet
Users should have activated the installation from Unknown sources : Settings > Applications > Unknown sources...
You could also use Hockeyapp or similar service to automatically distribute the application among users. You can find Hockeyapp's API documentation for uploading .apk files here.
I am facing this problem so many times,
I used to send the apk files through mail to my clients for reviewing.
Sometimes , they are telling that the new attached one has not get any updates , it remains same.
Even i did updates in that and, i have chacked it by uninstalling the older application and downloaded the attachment , So it was working fine with updates in myside.
I asked them to do same. But for them it wasn't.
So please give some idea,
Is there any better way to share the apk files?
Are they need to clean some other folders in their mobile, like "temp and cache" in PC?.
Or I missed somewhere in the Updated builds?
Please it is very difficult one for me to face always.
Thanks in advance.
hmm.. instead of sending the .apk file to them through email, why not upload your .apk file to a server or website folder and let them install from there using their phone / device.
in android, you can install apk files from the internet right :)
that way, you can just send them the link of the updated version of your app.
Maybe the problem there is your apk sent to their computers, is either not really saved / not overwritten. in case the .apk file has same filename.
you can try to change file name also
:)
I have an app that will be installed by the user from a public webserver (outside android market).
So I hosted the apk in webserver and instructed the users to type the url to download the file and then "open" the downloaded file to install it.
But, almost 100% of users are having difficulties to do those simple tasks (they're are not familiar with technology...).
So, I decided to make a webpage that will simplify the task. The page contains a single big button that will:
Donwload the apk;
After download finish, start "Android's Install Dialog" to install the downloaded apk;
Dowloading file is pretty easy, but now my problem is to open the "Install dialog" from browser!
I'm totally newbie about html/javascript and I don't know how to do it (or even if this is possible).
Normally, you just link to the .apk file. When the user clicks on such a link, the .apk file is downloaded and the installation is automatically started (with a dialog like 'do you want to install this application').
So, just Download and install....
Important! This only works if your users allow installation from 'Unknown sources' in settings/security.
If browser is written not by you, then it doesn't know what to do with downloaded apk file. Ask user to download something like EasyInstall to install side-loaded apks or place you apk on Google Play. Google Play app on the device knows how to install apk.

You need to ensure your webserver that is going to deliver the APK sets the MIME type properly. It should be application/vnd.android.package-archive for .apk files.
Hi People I have an apk file that is made using phonegap and I need to test it using selenium so that I can get the id's of the components in the application and feed them into the scripts, can you tell that is there any way to open the apk file in the browser so that the process becomes easier or is there any app that can do that? any suggestions will be appreciated.
APK is just a ZIP-file, so you can rename it into .zip and open in a browser.
Though, you cannot add files into APK this way easily, because the content of APK is signed and aligned.
Yes it is possible first unzip your apk and remove "onDeviceReady"(Related to phone gap events) event and then try in browser
