List item container like whatsapp - android

I'm trying to get this effect on a list item in a list
https://ssl.gstatic.com/android/market/com.whatsapp/ss-2-320-480-160-0-a637ec45d9d24eb0f50c610657654007223dbe19
What do I have to do - override a LayoutContainer and implement my own onDraw method?
I'm not very good when it comes to graphics/drawing (in code) so can someone give me some starting ideas on how to implement this?
Thanks,

In general it would be much easier. define a 9-patch that can expand that is the background "bubble" and will serve as the background tot he listviewitem. you could dynamically add views (images, textviews, etc) depending on content, or if your needs are simpler, you could just have a single listviewItem.

Android ListView custom row overlay

I am developing an activity with a ListView in which I need to change the current row by another layout by clicking on the row, and I'm not finding any way to do as much as I look (I take hours searching for possible solutions and I have not seen any reference to this problem). I do not know if this can be done in Android, but if anyone has an idea of how to do this would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
PS: The ListView control is normal and just want to replace a layout with a different layout. I'm using the API 15.
Use a ViewSwitcher
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/ViewSwitcher.html
A ViewSwitcher is -
ViewAnimator that switches between two views, and has a factory from
which these views are created. You can either use the factory to
create the views, or add them yourself. A ViewSwitcher can only have
two child views, of which only one is shown at a time.
I suggest merging the two layouts in a single one and hide the second one. In your adapter data you should have a flag or something to indicate which layout to display. When you click a row, toggle that flag for the selected item and notifyDataSetChanged() on the adapter. This will make sure the changed layout remains even if you scroll up and down and the row goes off screen.
A more optimized solution is to have different item types in the adapter.

Android: Creating custom view and adding it to layout dynamically

I want to create a custom view with some text and two buttons all on one line. I need to be able to add multiple (any number) of these views to an existing layout dynamically (needs to be able to scroll). I want to pass a custom object to the view and set the text and buttons. I need access to the button event handlers from the activity. I've looked a little into custom views but I'm still at a loss for how to do what I want. I'm used to .NET custom controls, and I'm looking for the same effect. Any help or example code would be greatly appreciated.
What you want is custom compound view. You should write you own class (usually extending one of the layouts) and whole behavior, inflate the layout the way you want etc.
More of it: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/custom-components.html
This one helped me a lot too: http://javatechig.com/android/creating-custom-and-compound-views-in-android-tutorial
If you use list activity or list fragment, you will automatically have the many features you have asked for. You only need to create a adapter class for your listview. You can define your layout for your row view(buttons, text etc..) Try to look at the examples on the web for cusom adapter and lists.

Multiple images in one TextView?

I would like to know what is the best way to place multiple, small(all of them the same size) images into one TextView? From what I've found, the best way would be to use Html, but how? All of my images are offline ones, so I can copy them for example in the raw folder, if that is the right way. Can anyone point me into the right direction, or show a similar thread, which I did not find? OR, is there any better approach, like don't use TextView, but something else, which can be solved in the layout files, and dynamically filled with images?
Btw, the whole thing I want to do is:
I have a ListView, filled with items
each item has different attributes, which I currently print in plaintext(I want to replace theese with images
atm, I use one separate TextView to display theese attributes
the number of attributes are random, but at least 1, and typically 3-4(so 1 picture at least, 3-4 typically)
cheers
Sounds like you are making smileys in a chat/message application, am I right? ;)
Anyway, the way to go is to use an ImageSpan. You can use a Matcher to find all text combinations you want to replace, and use a SpannableStringBuilder to add ImageSpans to the positions returned by the matcher, this will replace those characters with the image defined by the ImageSpan.
Why not just create a layout that can be used for each row of your ListView and populate the different elements of that layout based on the data for the row?
For example, if each item has a maximum of 4 attributes, add four ImageViews to the layout, and set their drawables and visibility in getView based on the position passed in.
One thing is for sure : You do not want to put your images inside your textview.
A textview can contain a background but should not be used to contain images.
What you want to do is simply design an item layout that will be used by your adapter to fill the listview.
This item layout will contain a textView that contains only your text and your images. Then in your listAdapter you'll simply show or hide the images you want.
Try to base your layout on a RelativeLayout that will allow you to have a simpler design and even overlap some elements(the images could overlap the textview for example)

Rows and Columns layout in Android Widget

Things are simple, I want to make a widget with 4 lines and 4 rows in it, on each cell there would be a click-able image and an action set by the user via the Settings page.
The layout is like this:
What layout element is recommended to be used for this scenario ? Should I use a GridView, TableLayout, more Linearlayouts ? Keep in mind that the spacing between items must be the same. I want to make it as light as possible. So, what layout ?
If I decide to use a GridView do you have any simple tutorial about
this? I can't manage to find a way of accessing the GridView from
AppWidgetProvider and set it's Adapter. Thank you.
LE: It seems that GridView is supported starting from Android 3.0.. please correct me if I'm wrong. In this case the only remaining thing to do is add 16 images and for each image add a onClickListener ? Brrr...
If you use a GridView then half of your work is done for you - The only layout and formatting elements you need to consider are on a Global (GridView) and Item level.
Using a GridView will also give your Scrolling functionality and the ability to change your row/columns count based on your device (4x4 on tablet, perhaps 2x8 on a phone).
Creating an extension of BaseAdapter to attach the Grid's children will also give you the flexibility to check items, multi select and will allow you to quickly modify the implementation in future by adding and removing items at will.
If this is simply a 4x4 grid which will always ALWAYS remain the same independent of device and each "Item" will always be the same, Use a RelativeLayout as it will be the most lightweight and efficient ViewGroup.

Image in a custom List Android

I have created a custom adapter to display a list, there is an image that is displayed in each row ( the image is the same for all rows, except using an array i am assigning it different values depending on the position). An xml file defines the relative layout that i am using. My problem is that i can either get the entire row to be clickable or nothing at all, I only want this image to be clickable, instead of the entire row. How would i be able to do this ? i am new to android and am pretty much following different tutorials trying to create my list. Any help would be appreciated.
layout is like this :
TEXT:
TEXT:
thats wat a row looks like...getting two texts from two different arrays and shows it, a third array is used to link to the image. I just want this image to be clickable instead of the entire row.
Thanks
Android's list component manages clicks per row. This makes it very difficult to achieve what you want to do. Two solutions come into mind:
1) If your list is never very long you could simply use linear layout and scroll view to build the list. This approach won't work if you fill in the list dynamically and you can't be sure that there won't be a very large number of rows as it would use too much memory in that case.
2) Other option is to use ListView but make your text components and images different view types in list ie. break you row into three.
That can be achieved overriding list adapter's getItemViewType(int)
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/Adapter.html#getItemViewType(int)
In this approach you can make the image rows clickable but the text rows not.
