Perform search on Android within the same activity - android

I'm trying to integrate search in my app but I'm being blocked by one issue. My activity is declared like this and is located inside of TabActivity.
<activity
android:name="FileBrowserActivity"
android:screenOrientation="portrait"
android:launchMode="singleInstance">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.SEARCH" />
</intent-filter>
<meta-data android:name="android.app.searchable"
android:resource="#xml/searchable"/>
</activity>
As you can see its launchMode is set to singleTop. But when I invoke search, input the search query and press enter another instance of such activity is launched. No onNewIntent is being called! But in the launched activity each new search doesn't launch a new activity.
The desired behaviour is to stay within current activity. Basically that's how android launcher search works.

You should rather use android:launchMode="singleTop" like described in this article.

You could use android:noHistory http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/manifest/activity-element.html#nohist

Difference between launching app from recents and home screen

I have ActivityA as launcher activity.
From ActivityA I open -> ActivityB. I put the app in background.
When I open the app from recents the app is resumed with ActivityB.
When I open the app from homescreen, the app is resumed with ActivityA without calling onCreate(), just onResume().
Why is ActivityB cleared from stack when I open the app from homescreen, even if onCreate() from ActivityA is never called, and how to fix this?
Manifest file looks like this:
ActivityA:
<activity-alias
android:name=".Launcher"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:targetActivity="path.ActivityA">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity-alias>
<activity
android:name=".path.ActivityA"
android:launchMode="singleTask"
android:screenOrientation="sensorPortrait"
android:theme="#style/BlackIntroTheme"
android:windowSoftInputMode="adjustPan">
<nav-graph android:value="#navigation/graph1" />
<nav-graph android:value="#navigation/graph2" />
<nav-graph android:value="#navigation/graph3" />
<nav-graph android:value="#navigation/graph4" />
</activity>
ActivityB:
<activity
android:name=".path.ActivityB"
android:launchMode="singleTask"
android:screenOrientation="sensorPortrait"
android:windowSoftInputMode="adjustPan" />
this is how Activity stacking works, some nice example of all launchModes in HERE, more complex info in DOCs
in short - Activity with singleTask started (again) will clear all on-top-of-it Activities. you have your first MAIN Activity declared with this launchMode, so every icon click on devices launcher will clear your Activities stack. you can track this by overriding onNewIntent method. picking from recents just brings all your Activities stack to front, with last opened on top ofc.
consider removing launchMode (is this necessary line for you?) or set it as standard (default)
android:launchMode="standard"

what will happen if add screenOrientation=behind into launch Activity element

what will happen if add screenOrientation=behind into launch Activity element
<activity
android:name=".ui.activity.SplashActivity"
android:screenOrientation="behind"
android:configChanges="screenSize|orientation|keyboard"
android:noHistory="true">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN"/>
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER"/>
</intent-filter>
</activity>
I want to know what will happen if I write this , and want to know the details.
If you are set all activity of your project in the same screenOrientation. you can start your application with a splash screen activity, set the orientation like in your current code and forward to your CoreActivity or any other activity in your App.
In your AndroidManifest.xml set
<activity
android:name=".CoreActivity"
android:screenOrientation="behind"/>
This will use the same orientation as the activity that's immediately beneath it in the activity stack.
Explicitly it's used to Keep the screen in the same orientation as whatever is behind this activity.

LAUNCHER activity is not loaded for the first time in android

I Have the Code in manifest:
<activity android:name=".activities.login.LoginActivity">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
<activity
android:name=".activities.main.screen.MainActivity"
android:exported="true"
android:launchMode="singleTop"
android:screenOrientation="portrait"
android:windowSoftInputMode="stateHidden" />
What is happening:
The i load the app for the first time (Ex: Install it from
androidStudio) 'MainActivity' is loaded but once i close and launch
again LoginActivity is launched everytime
This happens for the first time
MainActivity launching happening for the first time
Its should always load 'LoginActivity' right since my launcher is
'LoginActivity' why is LoginActivity loaded just for first time. Is
there any setting i need to check
You have used
android:launchMode="singleTop"
in your main activity. According to docs -
if an existing instance of the "singleTop" activity is in the target task, but not at the top of the stack, or if it's at the top of a stack, but not in the target task — a new instance would be created and pushed on the stack.
So that's why MainActivity is loading.
You should remove
android:launchMode="singleTop"
to get desired results.
For more information on launch modes refer docs -

Restoring Unity3d Android application with another activity on top

I need the following problem to be resolved:
From the UnityPlayerNativeActivity I am starting a standard Android activity (may be mine, may be with an ad from the ad network - nevermind). When the game is being hidden with this activity on top (not the Unity one) by pressing the home button, as a user I have two ways of restoring it:
from the Recently used apps screen - the app is being restored to the same state, when it was minimized (that is what I expect to happen);
from the launcher, what causes the game's UnityPlayerNativeActivity is being restored with losing all other activities, that have been opened on top of it.
These activities are lost somehow (in a way I don't exactly know, what has happened with them). My game's logic depends on the result of the processes happening there, ie. I need to know, that this particular activity has been exited in any specific way (give a callback for example).
Do you know how I can bring this Unity activity back from launcher with all activities above it, as it was while minimizing it?
I want to understand the difference between the ways of restoring the app from Recently used screen and the launcher. I guess it is related to the intent-filter section within AndroidManifest.xml file, which is included within UnityPlayerNativeActivity entry.
The solution turned out to be quite simple, but not so obvious.
It has turned out, that the AndroidManifest.xml configuration that is being produced by Unity by default is causing this problem. For the main activity that is being started from launcher the following parameters are defined (taken from decompiled app):
<activity
android:alwaysRetainTaskState="true"
android:clearTaskOnLaunch="true"
android:configChanges="locale|fontScale|keyboard|keyboardHidden|mcc|mnc|navigation|orientation|screenLayout|screenSize|smallestScreenSize|touchscreen|uiMode"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:launchMode="singleTask"
android:name="com.unity3d.player.UnityPlayerNativeActivity"
android:screenOrientation="fullSensor"
launchMode="singleTask">
<meta-data android:name="unityplayer.ForwardNativeEventsToDalvik" android:value="true"/>
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN"/>
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER"/>
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LEANBACK_LAUNCHER"/>
</intent-filter>
</activity>
The problematic behaviour is being caused by these 2 parameters:
android:clearTaskOnLaunch="true"
android:launchMode="singleTask"
When the I change them to:
android:clearTaskOnLaunch="false"
android:launchMode="standard"
Then the app is resuming fine from the launcher.
The correct parameters should be set as follows:
<activity
android:alwaysRetainTaskState="true"
android:clearTaskOnLaunch="false"
android:configChanges="locale|fontScale|keyboard|keyboardHidden|mcc|mnc|navigation|orientation|screenLayout|screenSize|smallestScreenSize|touchscreen|uiMode"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:launchMode="standard"
android:name="com.unity3d.player.UnityPlayerNativeActivity"
android:screenOrientation="fullSensor"
launchMode="standard">
<meta-data android:name="unityplayer.ForwardNativeEventsToDalvik" android:value="true"/>
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN"/>
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER"/>
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LEANBACK_LAUNCHER"/>
</intent-filter>
</activity>
Note: While I am able to set the value android:clearTaskOnLaunch="false" for this activity explicitly, the launchMode parameter will be forced by Unity3d and set to "singleTask". I managed to change and check it by decompiling the app and rebuilding from these changed resources. I wonder if there is any elegant way to set this value.

Android launchMode="singleTask" and Intent-filters

So I have an Activity A that is defined in the AndroidManifest.xml as defined below:
<activity
android:name=".activity.A"
android:screenOrientation="landscape"
android:windowSoftInputMode="stateAlwaysHidden"
android:launchMode="singleTask">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
This Activity launches a welcome Screen which we will call Activity B.
If you launch the application the Welcome screen is displayed and then once the user is done with it Activity A comes back.
The issue I am having is when I push the "Home" button from the welcome screen I go back to the Home Screen as expected. Now when I reclick on the Application Icon the application won't launch. Instead both my Activity A & B get destroyed. If I click on the icon again then the application relaunches as expected.
Now if I'm on the welcome screen and push the back arrow and reclick on the App icon it launches the application as expected. I don't have to push it twice.
Unfortunately I have to use the launchMode="singleTask" since it is a requirement for integration with another team. I have read the Android API's for Tasks and Back Stacks numerous times. Any pointers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I came across a blog indicating there is an undocumented bug with using singleTask and intent-filters together but didn't find any official documentation on this.
Thanks
EDIT
Launching Activity B like this:
Intent intent = new Intent(context, B.class);
startActivityForResult(intent, CONST_VAR);
I tried making two activities which launches ActivityB from Activity A. I see no such problem as described in the question. PFB my manifest. Also, when you say home button, is it Phone home button or your app specific home button. PFB my manifest
<activity
android:name="com.android.testsingletask.MainActivity"
android:launchMode="singleTask"
android:screenOrientation="landscape"
android:windowSoftInputMode="stateAlwaysHidden"
android:label="#string/app_name" >

<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>

android:screenOrientation="landscape"
android:windowSoftInputMode="stateAlwaysHidden"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
