update your SDK in eclipse, by going to Window>preferences >Available packages select the latest package and download
EDITED
In the "Graphical Layout" tab of the layout editor there is a dropdown(above theme) for selecting the Android version to use. so select a compatible version and you're probably good to go.

When I open layout file in my new Android-Studio file and press preview tab it'll show a message Waiting for build to finish... for infinite time.
Has anyone faced the same issue or any solution?
Cleaning and rebuilding my project solved the issue.
try different theme (may be from Appcompat) and API level from top
OR
If you have made some changes in the layout just undo it.
delete .idea and .gradle folder from root of the project
close android studio , restart it
click on gradle icon from right sidebar and click sync icon to refresh project.
now rebuild the project and it should work.
After a lot searching and I tried all solution which people give here, but any of them didn't solve my problem, I guess this problem is from studio's developers, and they may fix it in next patch.
so I simply re-installed my android studio and it's solved.
Try Clean and rebuild project.and Also try Invalidate caches/Restart.And this issue is also facing because of Low Ram in laptops.
After upgrading to Android Studio version 3.1, in the Project Structure dialog the build tools version was empty. Selecting a build tools version solved the problem for me.
Hope it helps for someone facing the same issue.
See my response on similar question posted:
Android studio error java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Resource name cannot be empty
This error can occur when you update to Android Studio 3.0. It doesn't affect your ability to build a project, but the error does not allow you to visually see your xml layout files. You will also get the error when committing files to GIT, but you can still commit and push.
What I found in one of my projects is that a file was added to the "menu" folder automatically upon Android Studio upgrade, and the file had no name. It was named simply ".xml". All you need to do is delete the file and clean your project, allowing a new build of the project. That should take care of the issue.
For me I had this problem with one file, so I simply created a new one with the same code.
Simply make a build from within AS - not the command line. I get this all the time because I'm mostly using the command line. It's been like this since early versions of AS so I recon it's not high on there list of issues.
Lately (3.2) there is a lot of new internal crashes and what not - not stable at all 🤐
I think I'd tried everything to fix it but failed.
I've downloaded eclipse from here: http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/eclipse-android-developers-includes-incubating-components/neonr
It's the latest eclipse package made to work with android app developing.
AND
I've downloaded and installed Android Sdk from:
https://dl.google.com/android/installer_r24.4.1-windows.exe
https://dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r24.4.1-macosx.zip
That's right, both windows and mac versions.
My Android sdk looks like this.
And I created a new android application project, and I just open a pre-made layout xml file and as soon as I save a change I got this.
'Running Android Lint' has encountered a problem.
Failed
Detail:
Failed
java.lang.UnsupportedOperationException
So, here is the big question, how to fix android lint? Or at least point me the right direction, I've tried this on a PC and on a Mac, same problem.
Update: I know android studio and I've used it alot. Let's just say I have my reasons to pick up eclipse and make it work again.
It can be solved by turn off lint error check.
Click Window in Eclipse, select Preferences. Select Android -> Lint Error Checking on the left, and uncheck following checkboxes:
1.Run full error check when exporting app and abort if errors are found 2.When saving file check for error
For ref please check the screenshot I have attached:
Using 3.6.2. When I choose to create a new Android Project, I enter a name, 'FirstProject' but the Finish button remains hollow and I cannot get past creating the project.
I did a little Google research and found a common cause of this is that the support folder that exists in the SDK's extras folder needs to be duplicated and the duplicate named to compatibility. I've done this now, and restarted Eclipse, but this still hasn't fixed the issue.
I also read that Juno causes this problem, but I'm not using Juno.
Has anyone experienced this problem before? Very eager to start an Android App!!
EDIT: A screen of the error:
You need to choose a Build SDK. If there is nothing in that drop-down, please visit the SDK Manager (Window > Android SDK Manager) and download one or more SDK platforms and associated emulators.
Make sure you add the SDK in Eclipse otherwise you will download them all and scratch your head on why they are not working. If you launch SDK manager form SDK folder and not from Eclipse it does not seem to register in Eclipse that you have downloaded these files. Took me several hours for something that should have taken only one or so.
I am an experienced programmer but new to Android, hence using Eclipse for the first time.
Unfortunately I cannot get my first project off the ground. I get as far trying to create the project when the following sequence happens.
A screen arrives titled 'Install Dependencies' telling me that the required version is 8 and the installed version is 'Not installed'
I click on the Install/Upgrade button and something must happen because Android SDK Manager pops up and I get a whole series of 'Fetching:' messages.
The next screen asks me to Choose Package to Install and the only option is Android Support Library, revision 10. This doesn't bother me as I presume 10 is better than 8 so I hit the Install button.
This is where it all goes wrong as I get a red message saying:-
File not found:C:\Program Files (X86)\Android\android-sdk\temp\support_r10.zip (Acces is denied).
Sure enough, when I check this folder, it is empty.
Now, something must have happened as as SDK Manager did a whole lot of fetching and must have put these files somewhere.
I am quite happy to find them and put them in the correct folder but the question is
What is the name of the files that I am looking for?
Run SDK Manager as administrator and then install Android Support Library from Extras
Download the sdk manager seperately and install files from there. put it in a place which is accessible to you and then point your eclipse android directory to it. tools>options>android sdk
Run eclipse as Administrator. This is the solution.
Try running your application (Eclipse) in Admin Mode.
Right click on the Eclipse app, and choose "Run as Administrator"
This will fix your problem.
properties >java build path >click library tab > add jars > add jars from the support library.
I'm working on my first Android App using the Android SDK for Eclipse and the eclipse plugin (ADT)
Recently I've encountered an error while trying to build an UI in XML with the GUI. Any time I try to open a layout XML file, I can't find the graphical interface (No Layout TAB, just the source and the design tabs).
I have to write all the XML code. I think that graphical editor is broken and I don't know what I have to do. Anyone else have the same problem or any suggestions?
did you try to re install the ADT Plugin ??
if it doesn't work , you can use this website , it is very useful , and then just copy/paste your code :
refer this link

May be you have already try it, but try to remove then reinstall eclipse android plugin. For me it worked when I had a similar issue. If not work, witch version of Eclipse do you have (Not only the number version, but also give if you dowload eclipse for java developer, ...) and witch Android SDK do you use ?
