I have the following basic layout
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="#drawable/title_bar_background">
<TextView
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge"
android:padding="10dp"
android:text="HELLO WORLD" />
</LinearLayout>
<LinearLayout>
It seems like the xml is correct but the text is aligned to the left. The textview takes up the entire width of the parent and the textview is set to be centered. Not sure what the problem is...
What's happening is that since the the TextView is filling the whole width of the inner LinearLayout it is already in the horizontal center of the layout. When you use android:layout_gravity it places the widget, as a whole, in the gravity specified. Instead of placing the whole widget center what you're really trying to do is place the content in the center which can be accomplished with android:gravity="center_horizontal" and the android:layout_gravity attribute can be removed.
If you set <TextView> in center in <Linearlayout> then first put android:layout_width="fill_parent" compulsory
No need of using any other gravity
<LinearLayout
android:layout_toRightOf="#+id/linear_profile"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:gravity="center_horizontal">
<TextView
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:text="It's.hhhhhhhh...."
android:textColor="#color/Black"
/>
</LinearLayout>
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="horizontal"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="#drawable/title_bar_background">
<TextView
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:gravity="center"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge"
android:padding="10dp"
android:text="HELLO WORLD" />
</LinearLayout>
Use android:gravity="center" in TextView instead of layout_gravity.
Just use: android:layout_centerHorizontal="true"
It will put the whole textview in the center

I am trying to center a TextView in a LinearLayout and it is centering horizontaly but not vertically.
below is my code
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="320dp"
android:layout_height="50dp"
android:background="#drawable/rectblack"
android:layout_marginTop="10dp"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:minWidth="25px"
android:minHeight="25px">
<TextView
android:text="Explode a Vin"
android:gravity="center"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/tvExVin" />
</LinearLayout>
In the end I would like it to be centered vertically to the left of the Linearlayout, if someone could figure out how to do that, that would be great.
Thanks!
You have the gravity and layout_gravity reversed. You can have multiple values on the gravity attribute separated by "|". Try this:
<LinearLayout
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="320dp"
android:layout_height="50dp"
android:background="#drawable/rectblack"
android:layout_marginTop="10dp"
android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal"
android:gravity="center_vertical|left"
android:minWidth="25px"
android:minHeight="25px">
<TextView
android:text="Explode a Vin"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/tvExVin" />
</LinearLayout>
For clarification:
android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal" will center the LinearLayout horizontally in its parent.
android:gravity="center_vertical|left" will center the TextView (and any other children) vertically inside the LinearLayout and align it to the left.
Try to change your gravity to
android:layout_gravity="center_vertical"
gravity is used to position the content inside your View and layout_gravity is used to position the View within its parent.
But I'm confused by "In the end I would like it to be centered vertically to the left of the Linearlayout". But from the way it sounds, my answer should give you what you want.
Also, unless there is a very good reason, you shouldn't need to use a LinearLayout, or any parent, for a single child. If you can give a better explanation of what you want or even a screenshot then we may be able to help with a better solution.
This will give you your desired effect
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="320dp" <!-- removed orientation (horizontal by default) -->
android:layout_height="50dp"
android:background="#drawable/rectblack"
android:layout_marginTop="10dp"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:minWidth="25px"
android:minHeight="25px">
<TextView
android:text="Explode a Vin"
android:layout_gravity="center_vertical" <!-- changed gravity here -->
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" <!-- change to wrap_content -->
android:id="#+id/tvExVin" />
</LinearLayout>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal|center_vertical"
android:gravity="center_vertical|center_horizontal"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="AppLock Demo"
android:textSize="30dp" />
</LinearLayout>
I have an Android layout question. I have a display where I am putting some text into the middle of a view that has a header at the top and three buttons at the bottom. What I am having trouble with is getting the TextView (which is inside a ScrollView) to stretch to fill up the available screen space. If I set the layout_height of the ScrollView to "fill_parent" the three buttons are pushed off the bottom of the screen. If I set it to "wrap_content" it is only as large as is needed to support the text that is put into the TextView.
Here is the XML for the layout I am using:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<LinearLayout android:orientation="horizontal"
android:gravity="top"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
<ImageView android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:src="#drawable/ic_launcher">
</ImageView>
<TextView android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:gravity="center_vertical"
style="#android:style/TextAppearance.Large"
android:text="#string/meetingdetail" />
</LinearLayout>
<ScrollView
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<TextView android:id="#+id/meeting"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
style="#android:style/TextAppearance.Medium" />
</ScrollView>
<Button android:id="#+id/navigation"
android:text="#string/naviation"
android:onClick="meetingInfoOnClick"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
<Button android:id="#+id/mapsingle"
android:text="#string/mapsingle"
android:onClick="meetingInfoOnClick"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
<Button android:id="#+id/goback"
android:text="#string/goback"
android:onClick="meetingInfoOnClick"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" />
</LinearLayout>
Could someone suggest what would work best to make the ScrollView with the TextView fill up the available space but still allow the three buttons to appear?
Set the height of the ScrollView to 0dp and its weight to 1.
<ScrollView
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="0dp"
android:layout_weight="1" >
<TextView android:id="#+id/meeting"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
style="#android:style/TextAppearance.Medium" />
</ScrollView>
However if you don't plan to have more than one views scrollable you should remove the ScrollView and use:
android:scrollbars="vertical"
attribute on your TextView since the TextView is scrollable itself.
Just replace your ScrollView tag code to..
<ScrollView
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1">
<TextView android:id="#+id/meeting"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
style="#android:style/TextAppearance.Medium" />
</ScrollView>
It will work fine, if still you have any problem then tell me. if works then accept as answer.
I'm trying to center an edittext vertically and horizontally in a linear layout, but it is not working. Very simple problem really.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:background="#drawable/login">
<EditText
android:layout_width="150dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="#drawable/loginbutton"
android:text="Username"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:textSize="25dp"
android:gravity="center_horizontal|center_vertical"
android:textColor="#000000"
android:layout_margin="10dp"
android:id="#+id/username">
</EditText>
I'll try changing to a relativelayout in the mean time.
LinearLayout do not support centering in the direction it stacks items as far as I know. Unless the LinearLayout is crucial (which in your case it shouldn't be, as you also need the centering), I would recommend you switch to a RelativeLayout.
With a RelativeLayout, you can set the attribute android:layout_centerInParent="true" on the EditText to get it centred.
Using gravity affects the gravity of the contents of said UI item, this means (in this case) that the text inside the EditText would be centered. In order to center the UI item itself you need to define layout_gravity as this is the gravity a UI item holds within his parent. The code posted by the OP will do the horizontal center but not the vertical center.
As an alternative you can use RelativeLayout
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:background="#drawable/login"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<EditText
android:id="#+id/username"
android:layout_width="150dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_margin="10dp"
android:background="#drawable/loginbutton"
android:layout_centerInParent="true"
android:text="Username"
android:textColor="#000000"
android:textSize="25dp" >
</EditText>
</RelativeLayout>
It is very simple. Add android:gravity="center" with the linear layout.
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:gravity="center"
>
Try this:
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:background="#drawable/login"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
android:layout_centerInParent="true">
I am trying to create a UI using relative layout where in the UI should look as such:
In the top of the screen i have a TextView
followed by another TextView
followed by scroll view where in i have to display the text in the
scrollable format
in the end i have a imageview.
How can i achieve this.
I have tried using the combination of Relative and Linear Layout but the elements gets overlapped. Anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed?
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:background="#drawable/background_main" android:id="#+id/g_description">
<TextView android:id="#+id/titleBar" android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:background="#drawable/header"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true" android:gravity="center"
android:text="#string/aboutus" android:textAppearance="? android:attr/textAppearanceLarge"
android:textStyle="bold" />
<TextView android:id="#+id/wd_name"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_below="#id/titleBar"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textStyle="bold"
android:textColor="#FFFFFF" android:textSize="18dip"
android:background="#drawable/background_main" android:gravity="center" />
<ScrollView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/scrolltext" android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_below="#id/wd_name"
android:padding="5dip">
<LinearLayout android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<TextView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/wd_description"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textSize="14dip" android:textColor="#FFFFFF">
</TextView>
</LinearLayout>
</ScrollView>
<ImageView android:id="#+id/bottomBar" android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:src="#drawable/bottom_bar"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" />
you can achieve it like this:
Take relative layout and put textview in it.
Take another textview and add this to it android:layout_below="id of the 1st textview".
Take scrollview and add this to it android:layout_below="id of the 2nd textview".
Take linear layout inside scrollview.
Put textview inside linear layout.
Take imageview and add this to it android:layout_below="id of the scrollview".
Now your layout is ready and if you get any error then let me know with your code....
If you have a series of elements that you want to flow down the screen, then it sounds like you just need a LinearLayout.
It goes as below. Placing a TextView inside scrollview will make it scrollable. Reset is selfexplanary.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<TextView android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:text="Below TOP TextView" android:id="#+id/TextView01" android:layout_alignParentTop="true"></TextView>
<TextView android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:text="TOP TextView" android:id="#+id/TextView02" android:layout_below="#id/TextView01"></TextView>
<ScrollView android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:fillViewport="true" android:layout_below="#id/TextView02">
<TextView android:id="#+id/textView1" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="Scrollable textViewafkasjf;laksjflaskjf;lasjf;alsfjal;sfj;aslfj;aslfja;slfj;aslkfj;asldfj;aslkfjasl;dfj;a asfj aslfj asldfjk as;lfjk asfjka;sldf jl;asj df;asdfjasfj aslfj asljf asjfl;asfasj fasj f;asj flas jf;lasjf;asjkf;las f;asj df;as jf;lasjf ;asjf;asjf;asjf;asjf;asjf;jasf;asfja s;dfa;sf asf jf asf a; sldfja;slfj;asldfjk" android:layout_width="fill_parent"></TextView>
</ScrollView>
<ImageView android:src="#drawable/icon" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="#+id/imageView1" android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" android:layout_centerHorizontal="true" android:layout_width="fill_parent"></ImageView>
</RelativeLayout>
It works fine with setting android:orientation="vertical" for each text view.
I have a simple layout like below (which only shows a text "TEST"):
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:background="#ffffff"
>
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:gravity="center"
>
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:gravity="center"
android:text="TEST"
android:textColor="#0099cc"
/>
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
I suppose with this layout, my text "TEST" should be located in the middle of the screen. But the text "TEST" is located on the top of the screen. Why?
I used layout_gravity and gravity with value center, why my "TEST" text located on the top?
use android:gravity="center" in your main layout
just try it.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:background="#ffffff"
android:gravity="center"
>
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:gravity="center"
>
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_gravity="center"
android:gravity="center"
android:text="TEST"
android:textColor="#0099cc"
/>
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
Hi leem android:gravity consult with the content of specific view that means your android:gravity="middle" place the text middle of text view not a middle of screen. your layout_gravity define the where should your view is going to be place? mean you have to set android:layout_gravity="center_vertical|center_horizontal" of textview to view your text middle of screen
Very simple.. In the first linear layout section of your xml file. Just add android:gravity="center" and it will work..
