Android - stretched EditText above Button - android

I want to put a scrollable EditText above a row of buttons such that the text component fills all the vertical space left free by the buttons. This is proving surprisingly difficult, not least because the ADT is buggy: it suggests that this layout will do and it does in Eclipse but not in the real application!

In this layout the text stretches to the full screen, as you might expect, i.e., it goes under the button but the ADT graphical layout tool shows it stopping just above the button. OTOH if you give it a wrap_content height then of course it doesn't stretch. layout_weight is of no help either.
So, is there a way? You must test your answer in the emulator or on a real device, not merely in Eclipse.
Precision: what makes me think this is not working and that the text widget extends under the buttons is the shape of the scrollbar at the bottom (see pic. below): it should be rounded at both ends and instead it looks like the bottom extends farther. If you compares its shape at the bottom with the shape it has at the top (which unfortunately I was unable to capture: it disappears too fast) it is very clearly different. OTOH the text widget boundary looks as expected. This is very confusing. Maybe just a minor bug in Android?

I did the same thing with TextView and a Button at the bottom.I tried to put EditText in place of TextView there and it works fine for me. You can try this -

How to make a "subLayout" fixed in Android

I'm creating an app that gets some values, you click in a button and it returns some other values and this views are distributed in 2 subLayouts of a bigger vertical LinearLayout like this:

My problem is that when I click on my EditText and the keyboard appears the answer's TextView goes up with the keyboard and "overrides" my button (the entire RelativeLayout follows the keyboard), there's a way of setting the RelativeLayout fixed so that it stays where it is mean to be?

Try setting android:windowSoftInputMode="adjustPan" for the activity in Android Manifest file.

Android button text moves

Ive got the problem that, when i click one of the buttons shown in xml below, the text on the button jumps down one line. So if the button is 1 line, no text is shown. If the button is 2 lines, only the first line is shown, in the buttom of the button.
Nothing in the onClick method changes the layout.

Now, if i change the layout_width on the buttons to wrap_content, it all works fine (got the idea from When changing textview, the text on a button below the textview moves down. Help! ) - except the buttons now obviusly dont have the same width, and it looks messy.
Does anyone have any idea why this happens, and how i can both keep the text, and decide the size of the buttons?
This adds complexity to the layout but might be a solution.
Add a LinearLayout to your table row and use weights to control precise layout of your buttons. Something like this:

relative layout issues/android

I am having issues with creating a menu (not menu when you click menu button -- but menu as in the welcome screen to select items). I went to ImageView and TextView float (left/right) Android and I did not solve my issue. I would like to create at least five or six options to select from on this menu class. This is my menu.xml file. Please let me know what I need to do.
The issue is that the first item appears, but the second item overlaps the first item. I been picking away with this for the last hour and cannot solve this issue.

Why don't you use a LinearLayout (like a vertical one with severals little horizontal ones inside, each with a TextView and an ImageView) ?
Anyway, if you want to use RelativeLayout you should use something like android:layout_toRightOf, android:layout_toLeftOf, android:layout_above or android:layout_below in your xml to place your elements.
I advise you to take a look at http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/RelativeLayout.LayoutParams.html if you don't know those parameters.
You use a RelativeLayout but you don't place elements with reference to each other.

Make a component fill all available space on screen

I want something like this:
But I don't know how to resize the TextView so it gets all the available space on screen which is not ocuppied by the EditText or the Buttons. May I do it in the code, or in the xml?

At the code I'm just checking if the Buttons are pushed with Listeners. One of them, when pushed, gets the text at the EditText, and appends it to the TextView. It works, and TextView gets higher, while EditText and Buttons downs one line. If I go on appending lines, finaly EditText and Buttons get out of the screen. I want to avoid this behaviour, and accomplish to get this 3 widgets sticked to the bottom of the screen.
Use the android:layout_weight=1 attribute, like the buttons on the bottom of the form. That will assign most of the space to it and anything that's left to the rest of the elements.

(Side note: When using weight, setting the corresponding height/width to 0dp sometimes gets around some weird behavior.)

Relative Layout is causing issues with formatting

I have been working on an app for my school recently and wanted to clean it up a bit before possibly publishing it. On the scheduling portion of the app, I have 5 buttons that perform actions on a ListView that is also on the screen at the same time. However, I have the issue when I have around 6 or more events on the screen as once the list view takes over the screen and pushes the buttons off the screen, making it so that I cannot delete the events, make new ones, and so on.
I tried setting the list view to a static size (400px) which worked for normal screen orientation, but if the phone is set to landscape view you cannot see the buttons either. With my current code it would appear to work in the XML viewer but in practice is not the case.

Which would lead me to believe it would work fine. I tested it on my emulator and got the following result after entering a bunch of silly events however:

How I can fix this problem without using static size constraints that cause landscape orientation issues?
Separate the buttons into a separate RelativeLayout and enclose this and the ListView in a vertical LinearLayout.
Then:

The key point here is the height and weight on the ListView. This means that it fills the remaining space in the LinearLayout after space has been correctly allocated for the buttons.
Add a android:weigth in your listView tag and set the android:weigth value to 1. This will work when your list view height and width is set to fill_parent and your list view is covering entire layout. So try it, it will work.
One simple solution would be to separate the buttons in their own relative layout and put the whole thing in a linear layout, eg:

Use a vertical LinearLayout with two rows of Buttons (each row as a LinearLayout), then give the ListView a layout_weight value of "1". In fact, use layout_weight to clean up the size of your buttons too.
