Is anyone aware of a way to check the existence of fragment using Robotium?

I'm assuming that you want to find the existence of a fragment that you know the activity or tag for.
first call getCurrentActivity() on Solo and then call
getFragmentManager().findFragmentById()
or
getSupportFragmentManager().findFragmentById()
if you're using the v4 compatibility
library. That will search all the fragments on the page and return it. You can also use findFragmentByTag() if you've previously tagged the Fragment.

What is the difference creating event callback or the activity itself within a fragment?

Lets say I will be using several fragments(Action1Fragment, Action2Fragment etc.) within an activity(ActionActivity). I want to access some elements of activity object, or call some methods of ActionActivity. It is generally offered to create a event callback . What if I keep a reference to ActionActivity within Action1Fragment instead of keeping a reference to CallBackInterface which is actually implemented by ActionActivity since I will be using these fragments only within a particular activity.
I am kinda confused by the idea that Activity might be dead while reference of interface might still be alive(it sounds ridiculous when I read it again but it is OK if I managed to explain myself).
The Android Developer tutorials recommend that you use a callback interface on your fragments. The activity that hosts the fragment must implement the callback interface. The fragment does getActivity() and casts it to the callback interface, and then makes the callback.
This is the recommended way to promote a more modular design. It would not matter if your fragments will only ever work inside one activity. But if you want to make more generic fragments that could be used by different activities, then the above design pattern starts to become useful. (For example: a telephones fragment inside an person fragment and a company fragment.)
Suppose you do it the other way: the fragment does getActivity() and casts it to PersonActivity. The fragment then has access to all the public methods of PersonActivity. But this design pattern becomes much more ugly when you need the other activity to also use the fragment. The fragment would then have to be changed to first try and cast to PersonActivity, and if that throws, try the CompanyActivity.
The recommended design pattern basically gives you a way to make an activity compatible with the fragment instead of vice versa. The fragment only knows about the callback interface and not about any of the activities itself. The activities do know about the fragment because they implement the callback interface but they already knew about it because they constructed and initialized an instance of it.
Does that make sense?

Should we be using setTargetFragment()? I thought Fragments should not be communicating with each other

The android developer tutorials recommend me using the host activities of fragments to pass around data and whatnot, so why is there a set/get target fragment method?
My application thus far contains a host activity, and a fragment, which has a button that launches a DialogFragment, in which there is a button that launches ANOTHER DialogFragment. Using setTargetFragment/getTargetFragment has made this whole ordeal somewhat confusing though, so I am thinking of reimplementing to let my main activity handle DialogFragment.show methods through my main fragment's custom interface.
Is this the right way of thinking? Or is there no harm in using setTargetFragment? Can anyone provide good and bad examples of using it?
Also, you may end up with exception of no target fragment found in fragment manager. This happens if after rotation (or other config change) your target fragment will not be readded to the fragment manager by the time when caller fragment will be adding.
Imagine you have some sort of Confirmation fragment which you add from MainFragment as so:
ConfirmationFragment frag = new ConfirmationFragment();
frag.setTargetFragment(this, 0);
getFragmentManager().beginFragmentTransaction().add(R.id.container, frag).commit();
Now on some confirmation button click you invoke a method from MainFragment by calling:
((MainFragment)this.getTargetFragment()).onUserSelectedGoodButton();
This is pretty and simple, but if you will rotate the screen and for some reason ConfirmationFragment will be added to FragmentManager before MainFragment, exception will be thrown, stating that target fragment is not found in the fragment manager
I don't think there is implicit harm in using setTargetFragment, however, I would only use it in very specific circumstances. For example, if the target fragment is only going to ever be used by the fragment (taking into account object reuse and designing your classes to be reusable when possible) and even then, sparingly.
By using them too much, you will end up with what you're seeing - confusing code that is hard to follow and maintain. On the outset, by marshaling everything through your activity you maintain a "flat" hierarchy that is simple to follow and maintain.
I think the decision to use setTargetFragment or not is a coding-style/philosophical one that, with wisdom and experience, it "feels" right or wrong. Maybe on your case, by evidence that you are questioning your older code, you are gaining that wisdom :)

To use getSherlockActivity() or getActivity() or other?

I have an Android app with TabManager. Due to change of Android API, I need to upgrade my app for Activity to contain the Fragment. To provide backward compatibility, I use ActionBarSherlock.
My App is working fine. However, looking at the Google Play Developer Console, there is always few crash reports on "java.lang.NullPointerException" on the line with getSherlockActivity(), I think only less than 0.1% out of total users are affected.
For example,
// Example 1
File file = new File(getSherlockActivity().getCacheDir(), "filename");
// Example 2
getSherlockActivity().setSupportProgressBarIndeterminateVisibility(false);
My question:
1. Should I change all the getSherlockActivity() to getActivity()? Or under certain rule, it is mandatory to use one of them?
2. What is the difference between them?

The only difference is that with getSherlockActivity () you get the result of getActivity() but casted as a SherlockActivity. This allows to get access to the ABS specific apis.
If you just need something that is general enough to be in the Activity class, just use getActivity(). It will highlight this, otherwise highlight the fact that you use something that is ABS specific using getSherlockActivity ().
The NPE can come from :
using getActivity() (or siblings...) before onAttach has been executed
using getActivity() (or siblings...) after onDetach has been executed
So the solution is to check if your fragment is attached before using its activity :
if( isAttached() ) {
getActivity()....
}

Caution: If you need a Context object within your Fragment, you can call getActivity(). However, be careful to call getActivity() only when the fragment is attached to an activity. When the fragment is not yet attached, or was detached during the end of its lifecycle, getActivity() will return null.
This exception probably means that the code is being exectuted when the fragment is not attached to an activity.
The reference returned by getSherlockActivity() is set when the Fragment is attached, and then cleared (set to null) when the Fragment is detached. If your code tries to reference getSherlockActivity() before or after this, you would get a null-pointer.
getSherlockActivity is just a shortcut to:
(SherlockActivity) getActivity()
So in your case there is no problem to use getActivity() instead in Example 1 but in Example 2 it will not work since it is a method of SherlockActivity.

Using Google Maps in fragments with compatibility android support libs for android

I want to use google maps as one of the fragments of many. I found no other way then the one mentioned in the following way...

But now I have 2 problems
I want to call a public method of the MyMapActicity(MyMapActivity is created as mentioned in the link given above) from another fragment. i.e. e.g. if I have fragmentA as some other fragment and MapFragment as a fragment related to MyMapActivity(created with help of above link) then I want to call a method from MyMapActivity from FragmentA. How do I do this.
I also want to resume the fragment with it is called...

Workaround for Android bug pertaining to setRetainInstance(true)

The project (https://github.com/kaciula/BugRetain) uses a CursorLoader to take 2 values from a database through a content provider and shows them on screen. The scenario is this: From activity A, go to activity B, switch once the orientation and go back to activity A. The values from db are no longer showing.
Can anyone provide a workaround for this issue? The problem doesn't appear with only CursorLoader but with any loader. As a consequence of this bug, I can't write an app with fragments that use setRetainInstance and is available in both orientations. I really need a workaround until the Android guys fix the issue. Any ideas?
Do not set your fragments as retainable if you use Loaders. If you need to store some data between configuration changes, create another retainable fragment and pass this data to him.
A similar example can be found here: FragmentRetainInstanceSupport. But this example uses extra fragment for threading purposes. In your case this extra fragment will be used as data container.
