I have been looking for similar questions and I cannot find anything that is exactly what I am looking for. I have also been messing around with this XML for quite some time, and I do not want to have to import any libraries or use Drawing code to make this square border.
As you can see, there is an orange line that is behind the white border.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I feel like I am close but I am not sure how to move this line to the left without having it scale down in size? I have been messing around with the padding and it just seems jank.
Note: I have also tried setting the white border to have a orange gradient left side, and it didn't look right - so I don't think that gradient is an option.
This can be achieved with:
A normal rectangle as the outer white border
An orange solid rectangle to represent the left line that has android:gravity="left" to position it to the left and the paddings adjusted to displace the left line to the right, top, and bottom as you need

I want to add gradient only to the border of my editText , I can add gradient but it takes the entire background . How can I apply gradient only to the border , and the rest should be transparent?

increase the corner dp value can keep checking. i think giving around 20-25dp for all corners will give you that shape. And for correction it is not oval it is rounded rectangle.
I'm able to draw border to a linear layout, but it is getting drawn on all sides. I want to restrict it to right side only, like you do in CSS (border-right:1px solid red;).

As many including me wanted to have a one side border with transparent background, I have implemented a BorderDrawable which could give me borders with different size and color in the same way as we use css. But this could not be used via xml. For supporting XML, I have added a BorderFrameLayout in which your layout can be wrapped.

There is no mention about nine-patch files here. Yes, you have to create the file, however it's quite easy job and it's really "cross-version and transparency supporting" solution. If the file is placed to the drawable-nodpi directory, it works px based, and in the drawable-mdpi works approximately as dp base (thanks to resample).
