EDIT: As Oren Bengigi suggested, I tried enclosing the bit of code that saves the data in a post(Runnable), but I'm still getting the same results:
final Handler handler = new Handler();
void savePicture(final byte[] data) {
handler.post(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
try {
FrameLayout view = (FrameLayout)findViewById(R.id.image);
view.setDrawingCacheEnabled(true);
Bitmap b = view.getDrawingCache();
b.compress(CompressFormat.PNG, 50, new FileOutputStream(Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory() + String.format(
"/SimpleBulb/%d.png", System.currentTimeMillis())));
Log.d(TAG, "onPictureTaken - wrote bytes: " + data.length);
} catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} catch (IOException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} finally {
}
}
});
}
I am trying to take a picture with an overlay and save both as one .png. I am able to save the image the camera captures, and I'm able to save the overlay, but when I try to save both as one image, I only see the overlay and a black background. I've switched the two layers and the entire image was black, so the picture from the camera is just being rendered black. Any help on this would be GREATLY appreciated. Here's my code:

It might be that the ImageView that you set, doesn't update immediately.
What I would try is running the follwoing code:
Bitmap b = view.getDrawingCache();
b.compress(CompressFormat.PNG, 50, new FileOutputStream(Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory() + String.format(
"/SimpleBulb/%d.png", System.currentTimeMillis())));
Log.d(TAG, "onPictureTaken - wrote bytes: " + data.length);
in a handler with postRunaable and see if it works.

I've been working with an app that has a camera activity that takes pictures. The normal behavior is to take a picture, send it as an intent and then close this activity, but on Samsung devices this just closes an restarts the app. I tested it on emulators and an Asus tablet and it worked fine. I also tested it on multiple OS versions but I haven't seen a difference. The Samsung devices with the problem are: S4, S2, and Note.
Here is the camera activity:

Any ideas why this is happening? Or maybe a way to fix or avoid this?
I have spent some time debugging and can't figure why null is occurring. When I run the application immeditaley it crashes and it points to this line:
mSupportedPreviewSizes = mCamera.getParameters().getSupportedPreviewSizes();
and says the object reference is null. I can't figure out why mCamera is returning null.

As I am using a tutorial, if I use this CameraPreview.java instead (keeping the same Example class) it works, but I needed to make some modifications to the tutorial for the aspect ratio reasons:
import java.io.IOException;
import android.content.Context;
import android.hardware.Camera;
import android.util.Log;
import android.view.SurfaceHolder;
import android.view.SurfaceView;
public class CameraPreview extends SurfaceView implements SurfaceHolder.Callback {
private SurfaceHolder mHolder;
private Camera mCamera;
public CameraPreview(Context context, Camera camera) {
super(context);
mCamera = camera;
mHolder = getHolder();
mHolder.addCallback(this);
// deprecated setting, but required on Android versions prior to 3.0
mHolder.setType(SurfaceHolder.SURFACE_TYPE_PUSH_BUFFERS);
}
public void surfaceCreated(SurfaceHolder holder) {
try {
// create the surface and start camera preview
if (mCamera == null) {
mCamera.setPreviewDisplay(holder);
mCamera.startPreview();
}
} catch (IOException e) {
Log.d(VIEW_LOG_TAG, "Error setting camera preview: " + e.getMessage());
}
}
public void refreshCamera(Camera camera) {
if (mHolder.getSurface() == null) {
// preview surface does not exist
return;
}
// stop preview before making changes
try {
mCamera.stopPreview();
} catch (Exception e) {
// ignore: tried to stop a non-existent preview
}
// set preview size and make any resize, rotate or
// reformatting changes here
// start preview with new settings
setCamera(camera);
try {
mCamera.setPreviewDisplay(mHolder);
mCamera.startPreview();
} catch (Exception e) {
Log.d(VIEW_LOG_TAG, "Error starting camera preview: " + e.getMessage());
}
}
public void surfaceChanged(SurfaceHolder holder, int format, int w, int h) {
// If your preview can change or rotate, take care of those events here.
// Make sure to stop the preview before resizing or reformatting it.
refreshCamera(mCamera);
}
public void setCamera(Camera camera) {
//method to set a camera instance
mCamera = camera;
}
#Override
public void surfaceDestroyed(SurfaceHolder holder) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
// mCamera.release();
}
}
UPDATE: Additionally I tried to put chooseCamera(); right before the mPreview = new CameraPreview(myContext, mCamera); but it did not work.
I have a guess, as I haven't tested this code, but from looking at it as is, I think that you are calling initialize() before you are instantiating your actually Camera object. Observe this picture of the Android life cycle:
diagram source
You will notice that onResume() is called AFTER onCreate(). In your code you are creating the CameraPreview class with your null mCamera reference in the by calling the initialize() method in onCreate(). Therefore, the line in CameraPreview:
mSupportedPreviewSizes = mCamera.getParameters().getSupportedPreviewSizes();
is calling a null object reference, mCamera. Instead, move
mCamera = Camera.open(findBackFacingCamera());
to onCreate() (before the call to initialize CameraPreview of course!), keeping the same call in onResume(). Keep the check for a null Camera in onResume() in case the user leaves the activity and Camera is closed for some reason.
i have created custom camera app,
for now its captures image and displayed in imageView.
what i want is video capturing. how can i
how achieve with this same surfaceView
when swipe from left or right
please help me

I have an app that that exposes the android Camera API, my goal is to use the Camera in my activity “ScanVinFromBarcodeActivity” , in order to scan barcodes using (zxing liberary).
The issue I'm facing is that the Camera output on the preview (SurfaceView) seems to be rotated 90 degrees counter clockwise (portrait & landscape orientations).
See the snapshot of my screen ( As you can see the people and my computer are rotated 90 degrees counter clockwise???:
By the way my device is a Galaxy S3.
I’m using the following code in my PreviewCamera class which extends SurfaceView
The relevant snippet:
surfaceChanged(SurfaceHolder holder, int format, int w, int h) method
{
.
.
.
/*rotate the image by 90 degrees clockwise , in order to correctly displayed the image , images seem to be -90 degrees (counter clockwise) rotated
* I even tried setting it to p.setRotation(0); , but still no effect.
*/p.setRotation(90);
mCamera.setParameters(p);
.
.
.
}
But it has no effect, the image is still 90 counter clockwise, instead of the correct 0 degrees.

Any help will be appreciated.

If you call mCamera.setDisplayOrientation(90) before you call setPreviewDisplay in your surfaceCreated method this should fix the SurfaceView orientation but the image rotation will still be wrong.
I'm currently working on a Nexus 7 and Galaxy S3 and calling setRotation(270) on the camera parameters with the Nexus (front-facing camera only) fixes the image rotation. This setter seems to have no effect on the S3.
What I'm doing at the moment is rotating the image itself 90 degrees in the onPictureTaken handler, for a front-facing camera the rotation needs to be anti-clockwise (-90):
Matrix matrix = new Matrix();
matrix.postRotate(90);
Bitmap rotatedBitmap = Bitmap.createBitmap(bitmap, 0, 0, bmpWidth, bmpHeight, matrix, true);
This works for the two devices I mentioned, but I am concerned as to how this will behave on other devices.
outStream = new FileOutputStream(String.format(
"/sdcard/%d.jpeg", System.currentTimeMillis()));
I'm trying to save an image from the camera onto the phone. I'm able to take the picture, see the taken picture on the SurfaceView and everything, but when I go to my phone's filesystem, the picture is nowhere to be found. I'm thinking it's this specific line of code, however I will post my entire Activity just to be sure.
