How can I add drawables to my res folder in intelij IDEA? - android

I am new to intelij IDEA. I have just discovered that there is no drawables folder in my res folder.
Do the drawables come automatically or you just have to add it by yourself? If so how it is been done?
I will appreciate your response.

Just drag and drop the image from the source folder to idea res/drawable package. I know for a fact it works for PNG image.

In Android Studio you can press mouse right button on res folder and then go in new section and choose "Image Asset". In it find "Asset Type" press on it and select "Action Bar and Tab Icons" then select your image path, write name for it and that's all. Although if you won't see it just select "Project" isteaad of Android in left Project menu

Right click on res folder: New -> Android resource directory.
Select resource type: drawable, change parameters as you wish, press OK.
Ready!

Where is the "Add Image Asset" to create an Android Icon?

I can't find a way to add an icon.
I read that you can right click and create a new Image Asset. But it can't be found on the latest version of Android Studio.

You have to navigate to .app/src/main first - not directly to .app.
Then right-click on res folder and you will be able to add your image asset
check here
click on main menus ---> file ---> new ----> ImageAsset , like this :
or right click on res folder and new Image Asset :

Create Circular Launcher Icon

I am trying to create circular launcher icons in Android Studio 2.2 but they keep coming out square. Has anyone else encountered this? Am I doing something wrong?
After clicking Next you should get circular launcher icon.
Previews might be misleading as they have background as the icon.
After all, if you won't get what you expect, try: https://romannurik.github.io/AndroidAssetStudio/
Hope it will help

Android Studio: Newly Created Directory Not Appearing In Folders View

I am trying to create a new folder inside the /res directory
I added a new directory
The folder does not appear in the /res folder even though it exists in the finder
Case and point I tried adding the folder again and I got a message telling me it exists.
If you can suggest what I can do to fix this I'd love it!
(And yes I have restarted the program as well as my computer)
Turns out there is a selector at the top which, by default, is set to show Android. If you flick the toggle down to 'Packages' you can see your own packages.
In Android Studio you can add new directories by right clicking the resource folder in the Android view. (Don't get confused by the New Directory option.)
For example, if you want a new layout resource file and folder then right click layout and choose New > Layout resource file.
If you want a new layout-sw600dp for the activity_main.xml file then choose Smallest Screen Width from the list and click the >> button. Fill in the file name and width and click ok.
Android Studio will automatically create the layout-sw600dp directory and in the Android view you will have both layout files conveniently displayed next to each other.
It is a similar process for adding other resource directories and files (see my other example).
Clicking at TAB Android in top, select the perspective Project Files. Then u can see all folders of project.
Android 4.0
The Android view by default seems to conceal the duplicated resource type directories in the side panel.
If you want to view the duplicate resource type directories i.e. drawable for two different languages,
switch the view from "Android" to "Packages" or "Project" or "Project Files"
Browse the actual folder structure in windows and you'll see the folder. Put the same resource file found in the normal drawable folder into this new directory. Then when you go back into Android Studio you'll now see 2 files under the NORMAL \res\drawable structure. Make sure you don't look for a subfolder in Android Studio called "drawable-sw600dp" because you won't find it other than in windows explorer. What you will find in Android Studio (after you copy the resource file) is a new resource file along with your original called "jenny-web.png (sw600dp)" or something similar. This same principle resolves the same error when working with other resources like layouts.
For Android Studio 3.0, those who are following https://developer.android.com/training/basics/supporting-devices/languages.html and have encountered the same issue as the one stated in this question, you can also do the following aside from the above answers which are helpful.
Right click to the target folder (i.e. res folder) > New
Choose Android Resource File
Specify the file name, and in the Directory name field put the folder name you want to create or the existing folder you want to put the resource file.
After hitting OK, in the Project files dropdown, you will see the correct strucutre.
And in the Android dropdown, you will see it as part of the strings.xml under values folder.
This worked best for me. What I did was I right-clicked the 'app' directory and chose 'New' >> 'Android Resource File'. After that I filled in the File Name with 'strings'. Chose 'XML' as my resource type and my Directory Name was 'values-b+za+ZA'.
This created everything as I wanted it to, however, values-b+za+ZA, still didn't show in the Android view but it shows in the Package view. (The views you choose from the top dropdown.)
The difference this time is that in the Package view I can still see my new 'strings.xml' file and in the Android view I van also see the new 'strings.xml' file.
I guess android studio doesn't show custom directories in the Android view but creates like some kind of link to the true directory when working with it. I am not familiar with Android Studio at all but this did work for me. If there are more professional answers please feel free to correct me.
You most probably have the file named in Uppercase, Android Studio does not recognize file names in Uppercase, I had made this mistake a while back.
As the developer doc states:
be sure the Project window is open (select View > Tool Windows > Project)
and the Android view is selected from the drop-down list at the top of that window.
You will then be able to see all relevant project files (including new ones) in a more efficient way.
Hope it helps someone.
This is odd but in my case i had to many underscores delimiters.
When i renamed yt_search_view (2 delimiters) to yt_searchview (1 delimiter), it appear in project view where it should be. It is probably a bug. My version is Android Studio 3.2.
Also, i notice that if i add a value folder to the layout folder, it also fix the issue.
Example:
layout_control_x
--layout
----top_panel.xml
--values <--adding this empty folder fixed the problem
For complete information on how to add sub folder layouts check this.

res/menu and res/xml are not there

When I try to create a new menu resource file in res/menu as stated in the guide, the folder is not there. Neither is res/xml. Can someone tell me how to solve this problem? I tried to create the folder but it didn't allow me to do so
If it is in android studio v2.1.1, to create a res/menu folder follow these steps:
Right click on res -> New -> Android resource directory -> Change the Resource type to 'menu' in the drop-down menu -> click OK
To create menu file under menu folder follow these steps:
Right click on menu folder -> New -> Menu resource file -> Give the file name -> click OK.
Note: For xml file it's the same procedure but in the dropdown menu choose 'xml' instead of 'menu'
In Eclipse? Right-click on the res folder, select New and then select Folder.
You should be able to create the folder with no issues. Check that you have write permissions on that folder. Also you can try to right click on the res folder and go to new then other. In the window that pops up select Android -> Android XML File. In the new window you can use the radio group to select what type of file you want to create. This should create the folders for you.
Right click on the res folder-->New-->Android reesource directory
There you can set Resource type: as "Menu" and add Menu XML as required.
change the "Android" tag to "Project"
After doing that, find the Directory you created (manu)-> right click on the folder and choose "Menu Resource File"
On the new Dialog change "Values" to "Menu -> press OK
Now you should see the "menu" folder in Android tag!

Android/Eclipse: how can I add an image in the res/drawable folder?

I am completely new with Android/Eclipse. I can't figure out how to add an image in the /res/drawable folder of my Android Eclipse project.
Copy the image CTRL + C then in Eclipse select drawable folder, right click -> Paste
Drop in the image in /res/drawable folder. Then in Eclipse Menu, do ->Project -> Clean. This will do a clean build if set to build automatically.
Just copy the image and paste into Eclipse in the res/drawable directory. Note that the image name should be in lowercase, otherwise it will end up with an error.
Right click on drawable folder_new_file-
click on advanced button_
link to file in the file system_
then click on browse.
finish
You can just put it in on the file system. Eclipse will pick up the change on the next refresh. Click the folder and press F5 to refresh. BTW, make sure the file name does not have any capital letters... it will break android... and eclipse will let you know.
Thanks for the information .It helped me out as my project was somehow not visible in workspace therefore I had to insert the image from ECLIPSE IDE.
Also another way to do it is:
The image to be inserted should be copied ctrl+c and then right click on the drawable folder and PASTE it.
The image comes in drawable folder using ECLIPSE IDE.
You can use the image as an icon of the application using Manifest File-android:icon="#drawable/image_name"
Do you want to add an image from your computer? Just right click the folder in Eclipse and click Import
When inserting an image into the drawable folders, another import point in addition to the "no capital letters" rule is that the image name cannot contain dashes or other special characters.
Open folder path of Android application, open src folder then Add your image in /res/drawable folder
For Android Studio:
Right click on res, new Image Asset
On Asset type choose Action Bar and Tab Icons
Choose the image path
Give your image a name in Resource name
Next->Finish
The image will be saved in the /res/drawable folder!
Try to use jpg and png , also name your image in lowercase. Then drag and drop the image in res/drawable . then go to file and click save all . close eclipse then reopen it again . That is what worked for me .
You just need to copy/cut and paste the images into drawable folder using windows/mac file explorer
To refresh the workspace follow the steps mentioned in this question
Eclipse: How do i refresh an entire workspace? F5 doesn't do it
If that does not work you might wanna restart eclispe
