Building my own camera application + Automatically capture the image - android

I have created my own camera application. And when I click the button it takes the picture and saves it in the galary. What I want to do is to take the picture without a preview and without clicking any button.
My main activity class.

}
And the preview class.
package themiya.camera.android;
import android.content.Context;
import android.hardware.Camera;
import android.view.SurfaceHolder;
import android.view.SurfaceView;
public class CameraPreview extends SurfaceView implements SurfaceHolder.Callback{
private SurfaceHolder mHolder;
private Camera mCamera;
public CameraPreview(Context context,Camera camera) {
super(context);
mCamera = camera;
/*SurfaceView view = new SurfaceView(this);
c.setPreviewDisplay(view.getHolder());
c.startPreview();
c.takePicture(shutterCallback, rawPictureCallback, jpegPictureCallback);
* */
// Install a SurfaceHolder.Callback so we get notified when the
// underlying surface is created and destroyed.
mHolder = getHolder();
mHolder.addCallback(this);
// deprecated setting, but required on Android versions prior to 3.0
mHolder.setType(SurfaceHolder.SURFACE_TYPE_PUSH_BUFFERS);
}
public void surfaceChanged(SurfaceHolder holder, int format, int width,
int height) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
if (mHolder.getSurface() == null){
// preview surface does not exist
return;
}
// stop preview before making changes
try {
mCamera.stopPreview();
} catch (Exception e){
// ignore: tried to stop a non-existent preview
}
// set preview size and make any resize, rotate or
// reformatting changes here
// start preview with new settings
try {
mCamera.setPreviewDisplay(mHolder);
mCamera.startPreview();
} catch (Exception e){
}
}
public void surfaceCreated(SurfaceHolder holder) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
}
public void surfaceDestroyed(SurfaceHolder holder) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
}
}
In the activity class the on click method is like this.
captureButton.setOnClickListener(
new View.OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(View v) {
// get an image from the camera
System.out.println("Photo Taking!");
mCamera.takePicture(null, null, mPicture);
}
}
);
And when I remove that listener part and put only the
mCamera.takePicture(null, null, mPicture);
part application crashes. I think that may be due to the delay that the application takes to open the camera. So code try to get the photo before opening the camera. Also wait(10000); didn't work for me.
And also I want to take the picture without the preview. According to my knowledge I have to change the preview class to do that. But I don't know the correct way to do it.
Can anyone help me with this asp.

the trick is to give the Camera Class a SurfaceView which is not part of the view hierarchy. The following code is from one of my apps where i used this technique to display my own
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
}
#Override
protected void onPause() {
super.onPause();
if (mCamera != null) {
mCamera.stopPreview();
mCamera.release();
mCamera = null;
}
}
#Override
protected void onResume() {
super.onResume();
mCamera = Camera.open();
startPreview();
}
private void startPreview() {
if (mCamera != null) {
mCamera.stopPreview();
try {
mCamera.setPreviewDisplay(new SurfaceView(this).getHolder());
} catch (IOException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
mCamera.setPreviewCallbackWithBuffer(this);
Camera.Parameters parameters = mCamera.getParameters();
parameters.setPreviewSize(IMAGE_W, IMAGE_H);
mCamera.setParameters(parameters);
PixelFormat p = new PixelFormat();
PixelFormat.getPixelFormatInfo(parameters.getPreviewFormat(), p);
int bufSize = (IMAGE_W * IMAGE_H * p.bitsPerPixel) / 8;
mCamera.addCallbackBuffer(new byte[bufSize]);
mCamera.startPreview();
}
}
public void onPreviewFrame(final byte[] data, Camera camera) {
if (mCamera == null) {
return;
}
mCamera.addCallbackBuffer(data);
}
}

Ok I found a answer to take the picture automatically. Adding as a comment for the use of others.
final Timer t = new Timer();
t.schedule(new TimerTask() {
#Override
public void run() {
mCamera.takePicture(null, null, mPicture); t.cancel();
}
},5000);

its simple create another method with a timer variable with 10000 delay which finishes the activity of previewing then you will be done. The logic is that these method will run 5secs after timer 1 activity is done.

Capture video in mp4 format using intent - Android

So I have been searching for the solution from past few days but it seems that I am unable to find any. At first it seems simple enough.
I have an app that uses default Android camera app to capture the video using intent. Video recording is working perfect but the file format is 3gp. I want to record the video in mp4 format but I do not want to implement my own mediarecorder etc to build my own video recording module.
I have also searched for available extra parameters I can pass into the intent for the file format but I couldn't.
Is there any extra parameter that I can use for selecting file format?
Thanks for all your help!

White screen on activity start

I'm not sure whether I'm understanding this properly but according to the life cycle of an activity onCreate is run first. As such, I've attempted to continue to run the activity from there by calling the onStart method.
Not sure whether that is even the correct thing to do. Regardless, the moment I start the activity (through a button in the main) all I see is a white screen. I've got setContentView but it doesn't appear that onCreate is even being run.
I also have the activity included in the manifest correctly and I'm sure of that.
Still new to all this and really unsure what to do though and would like some advice on the proper method of operating the activities methods. This community is fantastic and has helped me a lot in the past so thank you.

No! Lifecycle methods (e.g. onCreate(), onStart(), onResume(), etc) are called by the android system directly, don't ever explicitly call them yourself. Consider the activity lifecycle here to see how the system calls each method.
Furthermore, looking at your code, your own onStart() method isn't being called anywhere. Looking at the method signature:
public void onStart(Context context, Camera camera) {
You've just inadvertently overloaded the default onStart() method provided by android. Which doesn't really cause a problem, until you call the wrong method in your onCreate(), as shown here:
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState){
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_camera);
button_capture = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button_capture);
camera_preview = (SurfaceView) findViewById(R.id.camera_preview);
onStart(); // <-- That is the activity's onStart, not yours!
}
which means that the whole block:
public void onStart(Context context, Camera camera) {
mCamera = camera;
// Install a SurfaceHolder.Callback so we get notified when the
// underlying surface is created and destroyed.
mHolder = getHolder();
mHolder.addCallback(this);
// deprecated setting, but required on Android versions prior to 3.0
mHolder.setType(SurfaceHolder.SURFACE_TYPE_PUSH_BUFFERS);
}
is never getting called.
Either you dump all that code into onCreate() or name the method something different so you don't confuse yourself.
You don't need to call the onStart() method. You just need to consider the onCreate() method. That's where you start your work.
Also you are calling the setContentView() method wrong. You should call it like this:
setContentView(R.layout.activity_camera);
INSIDE your onCreate() method.

building camera app on android

hey there I'm new to app developing and I'm trying to build an app which includes the camera.
I followed the android developers guide and yet the app won't run, after trying to look for old answers in this site and not finding any that helped me, I'm asking for your help.

Error starting camera preview: startPreview failed

I am new to Java and android development. I am trying to open a camera in a app as shown in the android development sites.
I have a CameraActivity which calls the CameraPreview. As stated in the title, I get the error "startPreview failed". That is followed by "Camera server died!", "Icamera died", "Error 100".
This is my first time posting here, so I appologize if my format is the standard practice. Thank you for any help you can offer.
The code is as follows:

Video recorded with Android MediaRecorder is corrupted on Samsung Galaxy S2

Good day! I'm learning how to record video with MediaRecorder but recorded video is corrupted when I play it. See this screenshot: http://www.4shared.com/photo/QtmJCHRi/corrupted-video.html. Picture marked with red rectangle in the left upper corner is what camera can see. But it is so small, it's repeating and there is many green areas. Please advise what am I doing wrong. HW is Samsung Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100, Android 2.3.5). I tried to follow this tutorial: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/media/camera.html#saving-media
Thank you in advance!

I read about it somewhere (I think it was in SO). The problem is that apparently, the Samsung Galaxy doesn't support recording in HIGH QUALITY (CamcorderProfile.QUALITY_HIGH).
Try with CamcorderProfile.QUALITY_LOW. to see if it works.
EDIT: I found the question with the same issue here
