How to kill a thread running in a new activity - android

So activity starts and I create a Thread which checks when to go to the next activity. But sometimes I need this activity to kill itself. onPause does this, but after that Thread is still alive and after time runs out it start a new activity. Is it possible to kill this Thread and stop goToFinals intent?

There are a couple of ways you can stop your thread. If you store your Thread object then you can call interrupt() on it:
progress.interrupt();
This would cause the sleep() to throw an InterruptedException which you should return from, not just print the stack trace. You should also do the loop like:
while(endTime > System.currentTimeMillis()
&& !Thread.currentThread().isInterrupted()) {
You could also set some sort of shutdown flag:

In order to safely quit the thread you must first call thread_instance.interrupt() and then you can check if it is interrupted or not.

see this post for kill java thread.The way they recomend is to use a shared variable as a flag which asks the background thread to stop. This variable can then be set by a different object requesting the thread terminate.

I finally got my app working, i just have one issue which i would like to correct.
I have a button which controls a thread that runs a couple function in the background. The functions in the background eventually stop the thread whenever a certain value is reached. What i am having issues doing is pressing that same button again to just stop the thread manually. Currently I can only start the thread and wait for itself to finish. I am able to do other things in the app, so the thread is running on its own, i just want to kill it manually.

On first look, you could simply set monitorStop = 3, which would cause the thread to eventually stop after it's timeout completes.
The problem with this, is that I presume if you push the button again or your code modifies monitorStop at some point in the future, then the thead you wanted dead, might stay alive. ie: monitorStop will need to stay equal to three for at least 750ms to assure the thread will comlete it's loop and die.
The correct way to do this would be to create your thread as a new class with it's own monitorStop parameter. When you create the thread, you would keep a reference to it and modify the thread's monitorStop parameter. This way the thread would finish without interruption. If you wanted to create a new thread, then this would not affect the old thread from finishing appropriately.

Repeat task while activity is open

i want to repeat task while the activity is open.
For example repeat foo() every minute while the activity is open.
I tought about Timer, handler and runable.

There may be a better way but I like AsyncTask so I would probably use that and call sleep() in doInBackground() then you can call cancel() on your task object and set it to null when the Activity finishes.

then overide and set flag to true in onBackPressed() and finish(). You can then use any of the other AsyncTask methods to update the UI if necessary.
AsyncTask
Thanks to codeMagic's answer for starting me down the right path, but AsyncTask isn't really designed for this. From the docs:
AsyncTasks should ideally be used for short operations (a few seconds at the most.)
The problem is that AsyncTasks, at least by default, run sequentially on the same worker thread, so if you try to launch another AsyncTask, it won't be able to run, since the timer loop never finishes.
To work around this, I just used a raw Thread and it's working fine.

Using a Service with A Timer to Update a View

I'm not sure if this is the correct way to go about but I will try and explain what I want to do.
I have an Activity which creates a fragment called TemporaryFragment with a label. What I want to do is create and start a service with a Timer in it and that Timer then updates the time in that TextView.
The way I am thinking of going is somehow, when the Service is started, passing the TextView from the Activity to the Service and then the Service keeping a reference to it.
Another possible way is to make the Activity become a listener of the Service and then calling a method in the Service to update the TextView.
Any thoughts would be great and maybe some options.

I'm sorry, I should also specify that I need this timer to run in the background. So when the application is sent to the background, I need the timer to carry on and only stop when I tell it to.
Service is not ideal for such minor task like this, moreover, Service can be run independently of activity. Also spawning new thread or using timer which introduces new thread into the application is not ideal for this relatively minor reason if you are thinking in the terms of mobile applications.
Instead use Handler in your fragment.

in onPause() method to stop executing your task if the activity is not visible as updating UI isn't relevant and it saves battery (you start task again in onResume() method)

Based on this comment I suggest you to use a local service which resides in the background, doing it's stuff (start a thread from Service#onStart), until it gets stopped by stopService(..).
Activities on the other hand may bind and unbind to that service (see: bindService(..)) to get notified about updates or to communicate with the service in any way.
I would use a more simple approach by using a Thread:

You can use the TimerTask Class for this. Override the TimerTask.run() method and then add that TimerTask to Timer class.

Stopping/Destroying a Thread

I have a Service that launches a Thread and a Runnable like so.

The reason for the thread is to perform an Async task doSomething(). For now lets not worry about the other class AsyncTask. I have tried it and it does not work for my case. Edit: I can't use AsyncTask because it is meant for the UI thread only. This piece of code has to operate inside a Service, so nope, no AsyncTask :(
doSomething() contains some external libs so the issue I am having is that it can potentially be hung at one of the commands, without return any value (hence no error checking can even be done)
To work around this, I will want to, at some point of time, destroy the Service.

This works fine and is easily verified on the phone. However, the Thread which was created above will continue to run even when the Service that spawned it is destroyed.
I am thus looking for the correct commands to insert in the Service's onDestroy() which will clean up the Thread for me.

The thread destroy and stop methods are inherently deadlock prone and not safe. Their existence also gives the illusion that there might be some way of halting another thread immediately when something else tells it to.
I understand your thinking, from your point of view their is one main thread, and when this thread hasn't received a response from it's worker thread in a while you'd like to kill it and restart it, without caring what it's up to. But the reason those methods are deprecated is you should care what the thread is up to. A lot.
What if the thread has a lock around a variable you need to use later? What if a thread has a file handle open? In all these cases, and many more, simply stopping the thread at it's current operation would leave things in mess -- quite likely your application would just crash further down the line.
So in order for a thread to be interruptible or cancel-able or stoppable, it has to manage this itself. If a thread or operation provides no way for itself to be interrupted, then you cannot interrupt it - it is assumed to do so would be unsafe.
If you runnable is literally

then there is no way to interrupt it. One would hope that if doSomething were a long operation that there might be a way to either interact with it incrementally with something like

or to be able to pass in a variable by reference which indicates whether the thread is interrupted or not, and hopefully the method would interrupt itself at suitable location.
Remember a blocking operation is blocking. There is no way to get around that, you cannot cancel it part way through.

A task can be cancelled at any time by

I think the best way to create and communicate with another thread is to use an AsyncTask. Heres an example of one:

Android - multithreading issues when changing activity

I have a main menu with an action bar. On create, I run a thread that hits my server for a current status. When Complete, the thread calls a handler which kicks off a constantly running thread that cycles through the items and uses another handler call to change the test in the actionbar. The problem is that when I change views, I either get android.view.WindowLeaked or View not attached to window manager

I'm not sure if what I'm doing is just wrong or if there is something blatantly obvious that I am missing. What needs to happen is the threads need to stop any time I change screens. Should I use Thread.interrupt(); before starting the next activity?
AsyncTasc allows you to implement doInBackground(), where your thread can crank away at its task. This is similar to the functionality you'd get from Thread.
The real magic happens when you override onPreExecute() and onPostExecute(), which are both executed on the UI thread. This should keep you from getting messages about your Activity not being attached.

You are trying to update UI elements after the owning Activity has been detached from the windowing system.
You will make your life a lot simpler if you use AsyncTask instead of vanilla threads (no handler needed, for one thing) and cancel() the background tasks from your Activity.onPause().
Can't you set a flag in onPause that each of your Threads checks for? If the flag is set then the thread drops out of its loop. Thus whenever the Activity is moved to the background each of your Threads will stop. You would need to handle restarting the threads in onResume. You could alternatively use the AsyncTask approach, but this is not guaranteed to actually cancel when you call its cancel() method, it only attempts to cancel the task.
