Android - Remove "More actions" button from the ActionBar - android

I have an ActionBar that should display the action buttons in a custom way. For this I created a custom view and attached it to the ActionBar.
One thing to mention is that I am using a menu.xml resoure file to load the options menu and display them on a smartphone, but do not display them on tablet, instead use a custom view. For this I market every menu item in the xml as: android:showAsAction="never"
Everything looks fine, except one little thing that still remains on the right of the ActionBar - the "More" button.
How can I remove it?
I tried this:
ActionBar bar = activity.getActionBar();
bar.removeAllTabs();
but the "more" button still remains there.
EDIT:
This is my menu.xml file:
<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" >

<menu>

</menu>

</menu>
Please note I still want to inflate this menu on a smartphone, but don't want to use it on a tablet.

Setting showAsAction="never" will force an menu item into the overflow. Why not check in onCreateOptionsMenu(...) that the device is a tablet, and if it is just not inflate the menu? Something like this:
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
if (getResources().getConfiguration().smallestScreenWidthDp >= 600) {
//It's a tablet, don't inflate, only create the manual view
manualMenuCreation();
} else {
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.menu, menu);
}
return true;
}
Don't forget smallestScreenWidthDp is only available in 3.2 or above, so you'll have to take that into consideration.

Removing the settings menu inflator from Actionbar

I have a action bar set up as this:
When I click on it a settings popup appears like this which when pressed takes me to my apps settings page.
My question is how would I remove the settings popup so that it takes me directly to my settings activity when I press the three dotted button? I tried playing around with code below but it yielded no result.
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
// Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present.
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.menu_main, menu);
return true;
}
Goto the menu folder of your project. res>>menu and find the xml file representing the
You have to add the android:showAsAction="always" like below:
<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">

</menu>
Use the showAsAction parameter.
<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">

</menu>
You can specify that your settings option always appears as a button on the action bar. You don't need the three dots in this case.
For instance, you can specify your action bar menu item like this (notice the "always" value):

Actionbar settings not displaying

I am having an issue that my Settings button in my action bar is not displaying. The Menu button that I made is displaying fine, but there is nothing to the right of it (where the 3 dots are suppose to be). Anybody know if I did something wrong for it to not display? I can see it in the menu.xmp, but when I run it, it is not there.
this is my menu.xml (my.xml):
<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
tools:context=".MyActivity" >

</menu>
Inflating Menu Here:
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu){
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.my, menu);
return true;
}
Devices with hardware menu buttons, such as the Samsung Galaxy S4 you are using to test your app, will never show the 3-dot menu button in the ActionBar/Toolbar. This is the expected behavior, as the hardware menu button negates the need for a software button. Any devices without a hardware menu button will display the 3-dot menu button as they should.

ActionBar item does not shown in Option Menu

I can't show items inside the "Menu Item" when those items are already displayed on the Action bar.
This is my onCreateOptionsMenu method:
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.opt_menu_main, menu);
return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu);
}
This is my opt_menu_main layout:
<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">

</menu>
I'm not using support library (my target API is 17).
If I click on the button Menu it is always empty because the item is already displayed up on the ActionBar.
I've tried to add more items but when the items goes up on the ActionBar, they are not displayed inside the options menu.
I've also tried with showAsAction="ifRoom|withText"but doesn't work.
I think this behavior is correct, but is it possible to show the same item both in Menu and Action Bar at the same time?
Thanks
Try this:
app:showAsAction="always"
but don't forget to add this line at the begin of definition:
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
The Id's for menu items must be unique. The best option is to create another menu item with another Id and set its showAsAction to "never" to force it always into the overflow menu. But their is a chance if you are also displaying other primary options it might force both into the overflow in which case you will see two menu items with the same title.
For the moment I solved like this:
<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">

</menu>
So in the onOptionsItemSelected method :
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
switch (item.getItemId()) {
case R.id.menu_add_schedule:
case R.id.menu_act_add_schedule:
//some code
break;
}
return true;
}
I don't think this is a correct solution, because on some device where there is not enough space to add this and other items up on the ActionBar,
since they are defined as showAsAction="always", they will be overlapped on the ActionBar Title, so it can create some layout problems.
The behavior that I want is to show always the items on the option menu, and show it also in the action bar if there is enough space.
This behavior can not be obtained with showAsAction="always" .
It would be great if someone could find a better solution.
Thanks anyway.

Android - items in submenu do not appear when clicking on parent menu

Please..please help!
I'm new with android development. After i create an app with simple menu. i click on the parent menu, i don't see the items in the submenu appeared. I don't know why is that. Enyone know this, please teach me.
i use nexus Emulator to show result. (nesux S (4.0", 480 X 800:ddpi)
create menu in the Menu folder -> menu-demo like:

<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" >

<menu>

</menu>

</menu>
i update Mainactivity.java in the src.
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
// Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present.
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.menu_demo, menu);
return true;
}
You're missing android:showAsAction="[property".
You can use a few parameters for showAsAction, such as always, never, and ifRoom.
Add these properties to your code, so for example, a menu item that I always want to appear on the actionbar would be like

</item
For submenus, you basically want the topmost selection shown as an action always and the submenu shown never.

action bar showing large space between app icon and menu items

My action bar shows the app icon on the left, then has a large space, and then shows some of my menu items on the right (the rest go into overflow). The problem is that the "large space" is big enough to hold several more icons. Why isn't it being used?
My menu resource looks like this:

<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">

<menu>
<item ... />
...
</menu>

...

...

</menu>
In my Activity, I have:
#Override
public void onCreate (Bundle savedInstanceState)
{
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView (R.layout.main_activity);
ActionBar actionBar = getActionBar();
actionBar.setDisplayShowTitleEnabled(false);
actionBar.setHomeButtonEnabled (true);
...
}
and
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu (Menu menu)
{
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.nav_menu, menu);
return true;
}
I have a suspicion it has something to do with the app title (setDispalyShowTitleEnabled), which I have disabled. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?
Nothing wrong with your code.
AtionBar by default allows only 2-3 menu items even when there is enough room to accommodate 4-5.
May be to maintain better UI.
So, instead of
android:showAsAction="ifRoom"
use
android:showAsAction="always"
to have the MenuItems always present on the ActionBar instead of going into the overflow menu.
