Is there a way to use a DexClassLoader without using reflection *everywhere*? - android

I have a library that I plan on using in dex form. I want to compile directly against this library, but not export it. Instead I want to drop it in my resources and use a class loader to actually instantiate it.
So here's my library:

This is obviously fugly. Especially since I haven't included any of the exception handling, as there are half a dozen throwables to catch in there. I could cache a bunch of stuff, helping me with speed a bit, but not a lot.
Normally I'd have both aware of a third library that has an interface, but the library has some static methods and I can't edit it anyway. It'd be really nice if I could do something like:

See what I did there? The inner class is just a wrapper around the Foo object, I've linked against it, but not exported it, and all is good in the world. But it doesn't work. In logcat I get

Is there a way to have FooAccessor use the class loader I passed in? Or is the use of class loaders a damnation into reflection hell.

What is the use of anonymous classes in Java? Can we say that usage of anonymous class is one of the advantages of Java?
By an "anonymous class", I take it you mean anonymous inner class.
An anonymous inner class can come useful when making an instance of an object with certain "extras" such as overriding methods, without having to actually subclass a class.
I tend to use it as a shortcut for attaching an event listener:
button.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
#Override
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
// do something
}
});
Using this method makes coding a little bit quicker, as I don't need to make an extra class that implements ActionListener -- I can just instantiate an anonymous inner class without actually making a separate class.
I only use this technique for "quick and dirty" tasks where making an entire class feels unnecessary. Having multiple anonymous inner classes that do exactly the same thing should be refactored to an actual class, be it an inner class or a separate class.
Anonymous inner classes are effectively closures, so they can be used to emulate lambda expressions or "delegates". For example, take this interface:

B f(A a);
}
You can use this anonymously to create a first-class function in Java. Let's say you have the following method that returns the first number larger than i in the given list, or i if no number is larger:

And then you have another method that returns the first number smaller than i in the given list, or i if no number is smaller:

These methods are almost identical. Using the first-class function type F, we can rewrite these into one method as follows:

You can use an anonymous class to use the firstMatch method:

This is a really contrived example, but its easy to see that being able to pass functions around as if they were values is a pretty useful feature. See "Can Your Programming Language Do This" by Joel himself.

Anonymous inner class is used in following scenario:
1.) For Overriding(subclassing), when class definition is not usable except current case:

I use them sometimes as a syntax hack for Map instantiation:

It saves some redundancy when doing a lot of put statements. However, I have also run into problems doing this when the outer class needs to be serialized via remoting.
They're commonly used as a verbose form of callback.
I suppose you could say they're an advantage compared to not having them, and having to create a named class every time, but similar concepts are implemented much better in other languages (as closures or blocks)
Here's a swing example

Although it's still messily verbose, it's a lot better than forcing you to define a named class for every throw away listener like this (although depending on the situation and reuse, that may still be the better approach)
You use it in situations where you need to create a class for a specific purpose inside another function, e.g., as a listener, as a runnable (to spawn a thread), etc.
The idea is that you call them from inside the code of a function so you never refer to them elsewhere, so you don't need to name them. The compiler just enumerates them.
They are essentially syntactic sugar, and should generally be moved elsewhere as they grow bigger.
I'm not sure if it is one of the advantages of Java, though if you do use them (and we all frequently use them, unfortunately), then you could argue that they are one.

Yes, anonymous inner classes is definitely one of the advantages of Java.
With an anonymous inner class you have access to final and member variables of the surrounding class, and that comes in handy in listeners etc.
But a major advantage is that the inner class code, which is (at least should be) tightly coupled to the surrounding class/method/block, has a specific context (the surrounding class, method, and block).

An anonymous class enables us to declare and instantiate a class at same time, hence makes the code concise. We use them when we need a local class only once as they don't have a name.

Here the interface is very simple and the syntax of anonymous class seems unwieldy and unclear.
Java 8 has introduced a term Functional Interface which is an interface with only one abstract method, hence we can say CheckPerson is a functional interface. We can make use of Lambda Expression which allows us to pass the function as method argument as:

Anonymous inner class can be beneficial while giving different implementations for different objects. But should be used very sparingly as it creates problem for program readability.
One of the major usage of anonymous classes in class-finalization which called finalizer guardian. In Java world using the finalize methods should be avoided until you really need them. You have to remember, when you override the finalize method for sub-classes, you should always invoke super.finalize() as well, because the finalize method of super class won't invoke automatically and you can have trouble with memory leaks.
so considering the fact mentioned above, you can just use the anonymous classes like:

Usage
This is very handy for building validators/deserializators. Also you can instantiate generic type with reflection (so if you ever wanted to do new T() in parametrized type - you are welcome!).
Drawbacks/Limitations
You should pass generic parameter explicitly. Failing to do so will lead to type parameter loss
Each instantiation will cost you additional class to be generated by compiler which leads to classpath pollution/jar bloating
An Anonymous Inner Class is used to create an object that will never be referenced again. It has no name and is declared and created in the same statement.
This is used where you would normally use an object's variable. You replace the variable with the new keyword, a call to a constructor and the class definition inside { and }.
When writing a Threaded Program in Java, it would usually look like this
ThreadClass task = new ThreadClass();
Thread runner = new Thread(task);
runner.start();
The ThreadClass used here would be user defined. This class will implement the Runnable interface which is required for creating threads. In the ThreadClass the run() method (only method in Runnable) needs to be implemented as well.
It is clear that getting rid of ThreadClass would be more efficient and that's exactly why Anonymous Inner Classes exist.
Look at the following code

This code replaces the reference made to task in the top most example. Rather than having a separate class, the Anonymous Inner Class inside the Thread() constructor returns an unnamed object that implements the Runnable interface and overrides the run() method. The method run() would include statements inside that do the work required by the thread.
Answering the question on whether Anonymous Inner Classes is one of the advantages of Java, I would have to say that I'm not quite sure as I am not familiar with many programming languages at the moment. But what I can say is it is definitely a quicker and easier method of coding.

Is it possible to skip onPause() method of BaseActivity in MainActivity when latter extends former? [duplicate]

I read this question and thought that would easily be solved (not that it isn't solvable without) if one could write:

I'm not sure if it is useful in many cases, but I wonder why it isn't and if something like this exists in other languages.

To clarify: yes I know, that's impossible in Java and I don't really miss it. This is nothing I expected to work and was surprised getting a compiler error. I just had the idea and like to discuss it.
It violates encapsulation. You shouldn't be able to bypass the parent class's behaviour. It makes sense to sometimes be able to bypass your own class's behaviour (particularly from within the same method) but not your parent's. For example, suppose we have a base "collection of items", a subclass representing "a collection of red items" and a subclass of that representing "a collection of big red items". It makes sense to have:

Jon Skeet answers excellently, with a beautiful example. Matt B has a point: not all superclasses have supers. Your code would break if you called a super of a super that had no super.
Object oriented programming (which Java is) is all about objects, not functions. If you want task oriented programming, choose C++ or something else. If your object doesn't fit in it's super class, then you need to add it to the "grandparent class", create a new class, or find another super it does fit into.
Personally, I have found this limitation to be one of Java's greatest strengths. Code is somewhat rigid compared to other languages I've used, but I always know what to expect. This helps with the "simple and familiar" goal of Java. In my mind, calling super.super is not simple or familiar. Perhaps the developers felt the same?
There's some good reasons to do this. You might have a subclass which has a method which is implemented incorrectly, but the parent method is implemented correctly. Because it belongs to a third party library, you might be unable/unwilling to change the source. In this case, you want to create a subclass but override one method to call the super.super method.
As shown by some other posters, it is possible to do this through reflection, but it should be possible to do something like
(SuperSuperClass this).theMethod();
I'm dealing with this problem right now - the quick fix is to copy and paste the superclass method into the subsubclass method :)
In addition to the very good points that others have made, I think there's another reason: what if the superclass does not have a superclass?
Since every class naturally extends (at least) Object, super.whatever() will always refer to a method in the superclass. But what if your class only extends Object - what would super.super refer to then? How should that behavior be handled - a compiler error, a NullPointer, etc?
I think the primary reason why this is not allowed is that it violates encapsulation, but this might be a small reason too.
I think if you overwrite a method and want to all the super-class version of it (like, say for equals), then you virtually always want to call the direct superclass version first, which one will call its superclass version in turn if it wants.
I think it only makes rarely sense (if at all. i can't think of a case where it does) to call some arbitrary superclass' version of a method. I don't know if that is possible at all in Java. It can be done in C++:

At a guess, because it's not used that often. The only reason I could see using it is if your direct parent has overridden some functionality and you're trying to restore it back to the original.
Which seems to me to be against OO principles, since the class's direct parent should be more closely related to your class than the grandparent is.
Calling of super.super.method() make sense when you can't change code of base class. This often happens when you are extending an existing library.
Ask yourself first, why are you extending that class? If answer is "because I can't change it" then you can create exact package and class in your application, and rewrite naughty method or create delegate:

For instance, you can create org.springframework.test.context.junit4.SpringJUnit4ClassRunner class in your application so this class should be loaded before the real one from jar. Then rewrite methods or constructors.
Attention: This is absolute hack, and it is highly NOT recommended to use but it's WORKING! Using of this approach is dangerous because of possible issues with class loaders. Also this may cause issues each time you will update library that contains overwritten class.

IMO if some one wants to call super.super method then one must be want to ignore the behavior of immediate parent, but want to access the grand parent behavior.
This can be achieved through instance Of. As below code

I have had situations like these when the architecture is to build common functionality in a common CustomBaseClass which implements on behalf of several derived classes.
However, we need to circumvent common logic for specific method for a specific derived class. In such cases, we must use a super.super.methodX implementation.
We achieve this by introducing a boolean member in the CustomBaseClass, which can be used to selectively defer custom implementation and yield to default framework implementation where desirable.

However, with good architecture principles followed in framework as well as app, we could avoid such situations easily, by using hasA approach, instead of isA approach. But at all times it is not very practical to expect well designed architecture in place, and hence the need to get away from solid design principles and introduce hacks like this.

I think this is a problem that breaks the inheritance agreement.
By extending a class you obey / agree its behavior, features
Whilst when calling super.super.method(), you want to break your own obedience agreement.
You just cannot cherry pick from the super class.
However, there may happen situations when you feel the need to call super.super.method() - usually a bad design sign, in your code or in the code you inherit !
If the super and super super classes cannot be refactored (some legacy code), then opt for composition over inheritance.
Encapsulation breaking is when you #Override some methods by breaking the encapsulated code.
The methods designed not to be overridden are marked
final.
In C# you can call a method of any ancestor like this:

The keyword super is just a way to invoke the method in the superclass.

If your method overrides one of its superclass's methods, you can invoke the overridden method through the use of the keyword super.
Don't believe that it's a reference of the super object!!! No, it's just a keyword to invoke methods in the superclass.
Here is an example:

How to verify a void method call in Robolectric test case where as no data coming out the called method.

First off, good on you for writing tests!!! There are a few ways to go about testing that an internal logger is called. It's equally as important to understand what you're looking to test. Testing that a class is logging a specific message is most likely a fragile test, so be fore-warned that you probably don't need it.
Method #1: Using Robolectric
Robolectic documentation doesn't lend itself to answering basic questions, but its codebase is very well documented with its tests. A basic understanding of its principles and how shadows work can get you a long way. ShadowLog tests lay the ground work to this solution.

If your SampleClass is just some POJO, then using a simple logging framework may make your testing efforts easier. For example, using Jake Wharton's Timber, your class and test can be written as follows:

In my understanding you want to mock static methods. I guess, using static mocks are not the most elegant way to testing. Better to use an abstraction as recommended by abest. Although, it can be done with PowerMock.

Using Resources in Exceptions

I have an app that uses custom Exceptions, such as this:

Obviously, I want lo localize the error message. I have possible solutions but non of them satisfy me.
1) Pass "Context" to the constructor, and do ctx.getString(R.string.error_201)
--> Fail, as this Exceptions are sometimes thrown from MODEL classes, so they don't have a Context
2) Pass "Context" when retriveing the message in getMessage() function,
--> Fail, It's necesary to override the super method, to work as all other Exceptions.
Solution I have now: All activities in my app have this onCreate:

Very dirty code... I don't like the solution. My question is then,: is there a way to access the resources without the Context? And most important, How would an application such as mine solve this problem?

Even if there was way to access context in different way, you should not do it. If you need to emit exceptions where you cannot pass Context, you should be able to access context before you display such error. I cannot see reason why you should create localized error messages from constructor. You can log to logcat not localized versions if you need. And where you want to display something in UI, you should have context at hand.
You can access only system wide resources without Context.
You need a Context, so I would suggest You to get it as soon as possible, and make it available through a static method or variable. You do the same thing in every Activity, but there is a cleaner method. You should make a custom Application, and override its onCreate() to make the resources public:

The other thing you have to do is to set the Application in your manifest:

Android project local manually created lib

I am not sure I did the right thing. The main reason for my doubts is that I cannot find, in this or other forums, someone who has done a similar thing.
I created an abstract java class in my project. Named it lib. I put there several structures and methods used by all other classes in the project.
It works for me, but I want to know if there is a more accepted method of gathering all common methods and structures.
Note: All methods of course are declared as public static.
Note II: I did not know how to get the context within the abstract class, so if needed I had to pass it as argument to the method.

Well, thanks to #Matt Wolfe's comment I came to know that what I did is called "Utility class" and it is widely used to share common code in a project.
The general template is:

and you can use it like this from any other code:

Knowing that makes me confident that what I did is OK.
It would be perfect to find a way to avoid the prefix lib. and just have ECLIPSE, and the compiler, find the right import and recognize the function with just its name, like they do for global libraries.
