I am creating a layout as below but the checkbox element is not visible on the scren where am i goign wrong ?

The LinearLayout before the CheckBox has its height set to MATCH_PARENT(and it fills all the parent's height) and the parent LinearLayout of both has the orientation set to vertical so the CheckBox is pushed out of the screen.
Set the height of the LinearLayout containing the SeekBar to WRAP_CONTENT for example.
You need to set your inner Linear Layout's height and width to wrap content.

In your layout chose one element that you want to be flexible in size, say height wise. Then make its height="0dp" and weight="1". Make heights of rest of elements: height="wrap_content".
Also you may have given discreet size of some dp to your other elements, and hence their total height runs out of available screen space OR there are too many elements that they go beyond your screen height. In this case, wrap your layout in a ScrollView.

if you set match_parent for linearlayout it consumes all content so wrap_content is better.

Hi I have an activity with an imageview and a row with buttons at the bottom.The buttons are added to the iconView layout programmatically.When I test my app on my HTC one the buttons are displayed correct.
Once I run it on a device with a smaller screen it is cropped i.e. only the top of the buttons is displayed.

make the first view with android:layout_weight="1"
and the with a static height without the layout_weight, this should solve it
Unfortunately the solutions did not work. Eventually I changed my code and add the buttons in the xml, not programmatically. This works fine. I don't know why...
When adding button either programmatically or in XML layout, try to use LinearLayout as the parent for button and leverage the "weightsum" property of that LinearLayout.
When you're going to share the real state of screen's width or height equally between a number of views such as buttons or textview or ..., you can set "layout_weight" property on those controls. Notice that, this is only possible when using LinearLayouts.
What happens at the end is that the linearlayout's real estate is calculated and allocated according to each child's element's "layout_weight" value.
The example below shows how to put two buttons beside each other and make them fill the screen's width equally :

I want the height of the container (LinearLayout) to be adjusted to contain all the views in the RelativeLayout (shown on the left, let's call it CONTAINER).
Then, there are two buttons in the RelativeLayout (shown on the right). I need to align them on top and bottom borders of RelativeLayot, correspondingly. What's really important, is that the height of the buttons' container should be the same (should correspond) to the height of the CONTAINER.
The problem is, if I try to use android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" and android:layout_alignParentTop="true" attributes for the buttons, they will stretch the container height, and it will take the whole screen height.
So, what magic should I use to do the trick? :)

Ok, based on a hint provided by Damien R. above I successfully accomplished the task by doing following:
Use RelativeLayout as a root with paramters layout_width="wrap_content", layout_height="wrap_content"
Use LinearLayout as a "wrapper" around container RelativeLayouts. This is because I need to lay out these containers using layout_weight attribute.
RelativeLayout layout_height should be fill_parent. No need to use android:layout_alignBottom="#id/..." and android:layout_alignBottom="#id/..." in the RelativeLayout attributes. This will only work if RelativeLayout is a child View of another RelativeLayout, and that's not the case, because I need to use LinearLayout's weight

I have an Android layout question. I have a display where I am putting some text into the middle of a view that has a header at the top and three buttons at the bottom. What I am having trouble with is getting the TextView (which is inside a ScrollView) to stretch to fill up the available screen space. If I set the layout_height of the ScrollView to "fill_parent" the three buttons are pushed off the bottom of the screen. If I set it to "wrap_content" it is only as large as is needed to support the text that is put into the TextView.

I have a linear-layout (vertically-oriented) that contains two nested linear layouts inside of it.
The first linear-layout has a background image that is applied dynamically based on the context o the particular activity. The image pretty much takes up the whole size of the screen
The second linear-layout contains two checkboxes (horizontally-oriented) that should be displayed at the bottom of the activity.
My question is, how can I ensure that the second linear-layout displays at the bottom of the screen and just shows the minimal amount it needs to, allowing the first linear-layout to display as much as its background image as possible? Currently it's being pushed off the screen by the first LL's bg image.

Notice on the weighted layout, the height is set to "0dp". With only one weighted, the weighted one will stretch to fit the rest of the available area.

Although my ListView is appearing vertically centered, but it's not appearing horizontally centered as its width is spanning the entire width of the screen. I guess as I used wrap_content in the layout_width in all the places its width should not span the entire width of the screen/layout?
