Gps dose not turn off if location not found - android

What should i do to turn off the gps if location is not found at 1st instance..without location update being called

You are calling the function when you are trying to DESTROY The activity itself. First find the Fix of GPS using GPSStatusListener
Use this code
Check Gps Status
Call your GpsTurnOff status in GPSStatusListener

new Handler().postDelayed(new Runnable() {
#Override
public void run()
{
turnGPSOnOff();
}
}, 2000*60);
this will turnoff my gps after certain time

Android Location service

RESOLVED
Singleton pattern was suggested. Not the most elegant way to solve the problem but it works. Here is the code I used. Just have to get the instance in the main and LocationService class to use. See answer for how you are suppose to do it.
import android.location.Location;
public class LocationSingleton {
private Location location;
private static LocationSingleton singleton = new LocationSingleton();
private LocationSingleton(){
}
public static LocationSingleton getInstance( ) {
return singleton;
}
protected void setLocation(Location newLocation) {
this.location = newLocation;
}
protected Location getLocation(){
return this.location;
}
}
Attempting to use a background service to handle Location updates. I create a service in Main that updates the data (working correctly I believe) but I also have a button in main that whenever pressed does some work with the location data. I can't figure out though how to pass the Location from the service back to main. I've tried passing Main to the service but that didn't work and always created the service using the constructor without main passed. I've also tried creating a method in the service that returns the location but that kept getting a null pointer exception. How does one go about doing this.

You can do that in multiple ways. You can create a Receiver and broadcast and intent from there or you can use an EventBus ( https://github.com/greenrobot/EventBus ).
In this case I think it's more appropriate the Service/Receiver model, you can find here an example: http://www.truiton.com/2014/09/android-service-broadcastreceiver-example/
If you need it only in one activity, consider to use an AsyncTask and handle the output in the postExecute method, it would be a lot easier.

How to get user Location in Android 4.4 or above when GPS is off

My Application crashes when gps is off and the back end code searches for the location of the user. I have tried the following code for finding the location of user when gps is off it searches using the internet.
Please suggest something in the following code or any other way
below is my code for the locationservice:

import android.content.Context;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.location.Location;
import android.location.LocationListener;
import android.location.LocationManager;

private static final long MIN_DISTANCE_FOR_UPDATE = 10;
private static final long MIN_TIME_FOR_UPDATE = 1000 * 60 * 2;
public LocationService(Context context) {
locationManager = (LocationManager) context
.getSystemService(LOCATION_SERVICE);
}
public Location getLocation(String provider) {
if (locationManager.isProviderEnabled(provider)) {
locationManager.requestLocationUpdates(provider,
MIN_TIME_FOR_UPDATE, MIN_DISTANCE_FOR_UPDATE, this);
if (locationManager != null) {
location = locationManager.getLastKnownLocation(provider);
return location;
}
}
return null;
}
#Override
public void onLocationChanged(Location location) {
}
#Override
public void onProviderDisabled(String provider) {
}
#Override
public void onProviderEnabled(String provider) {
}
#Override
public void onStatusChanged(String provider, int status, Bundle extras) {
}
#Override
public IBinder onBind(Intent arg0) {

Android get GPS Location after phone boots, I am trying to get it in a service but location returned as null

Here is the code.
How can I be sure, that location is returned alwasys instead of null.
package com.test.location;

import android.content.Context;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.location.Location;
import android.location.LocationListener;

import android.os.Bundle;
import android.os.IBinder;
import android.os.Looper;
import android.util.Log;
public class NotifyOnBoot extends Service {
Location location;
#Override
public IBinder onBind(Intent arg0) {
return null;
}
#Override
public void onCreate() {
super.onCreate();
updateNotification();
Thread th = new Thread(null, task, "myService");
th.start();
}
private Runnable task = new Runnable() {
public void run() {
if(location == null)
{
Log.d("location","No location");
}
else
Log.d("location",location.toString());
NotifyOnBoot.this.stopSelf();
}
};
#Override
public void onDestroy() {
super.onDestroy();
}
#Override
public int onStartCommand (Intent intent, int flags, int startId){
return START_STICKY;
}
protected void updateNotification()
{
LocationManager lm = (LocationManager) getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE);
LocationListener locationListener = new MyLocationlistener();
lm.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, 0, 0, locationListener);
location = lm.getLastKnownLocation(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER);
}
private class MyLocationlistener implements LocationListener{
public void onLocationChanged(Location location){}
public void onProviderDisabled(String provider){}
public void onProviderEnabled(String provider){}
public void onStatusChanged(String provider, int status, Bundle extras){}
}
}
I recommend to create a call back interface and use onLocationChanged which notifies that call back on the moment the location initiate for the first time.
LocationProvider locationProvider = LocationManager.NETWORK_PROVIDER;
// Or use LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER
Location lastKnownLocation = locationManager.getLastKnownLocation(locationProvider);

Why is my scheduleAtFixedRate being ignored in my code..?

Here is my New code based on your suggestions. It did not work. I got a bunch of "Just sent a text message with coords" in a row. So it still is not sleeping for 15 seconds.

Here is my code
I get "Just sent a text message with coords" sent like once a second even though my scheduleAtFixedRate is set for 10 seconds.
I got this to work in a normal program, but on the Android platform, they want you to use Looper....and it appears that my code is caught up in this Looper so therefore it is ignoring my scheduleAtFixedRate(10 seconds)
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think the misconception here is not so much that Android wants to use a Looper, but thaty you shouldn't use the Timer for the behavior that you desire. Instead of the Timer you have to manipulate a Looper. I haven't used the Looper directly in a while because there are other components which abstract away a lot of the nuances of it. However I think that Looper.loop() should not return until an outside entity either interrupts your thread or quit's the looper for you. So I don't think that will work, I could be wrong though.
You could use a Handler if you want to create a pulse. A Handler allow you to do work on the Looper thread.
So with the example you have,
private static final int PERIOD = 15000;
Handler mHandler;
Runnable mRunnable;
#Override
public void onCreate() {
super.onCreate();
mHandler = new Handler();
mRunnable = new Runnable() {
public void run() {
updateNotication();
mHandler.postDelayed(this, PERIOD);
}
};
}
I will admit from here on out I am only guessing I know the desired outcome of your application. I am assuming you don't need two way communication as your IBinder is null.
#Override
public void onStart() {
mRunnable.run();
}
// The rest of your code.
..
Try to call initService from onStart().
Basically the best bet for me was to call this onCreate. Now it is doing exactly what I want it to do. Thanks for all your inputs..!! This helped me solve the problem.
