Creating an Android Layout with 2 resizing views - android

In my layout, I need a header, a list-view, and a footer with a TextView. The TextView needs to be resizable to up to 5 lines. Think facebook chat, where you have the blue header with the name of your friend, the middle content pane, and a text box down below, that grows as you type stuff in:

I've tried all sorts of different layout settings, but can't get it right. Either the footer takes up all the space, or the content covers the footer.
Here's what I have so far:

I left out the layout_width and layout_height values empty, because I don't know what to set them to.
UPDATES
Initially, I thought the problem was because my EditText was set to maxLines=5 and TextMultiline, but I tried removing everything but one button with a hardcoded height, and the insert still covered everything. I also tried setting <footer below="content"> but then content just covered footer

The problem was that the footer layout included is another RelativeLayout. The footer layout contains elements that set layout_alignParentBottom="true", which made the footer layout take up the entire screen. I have no idea why it would do that, but that's what happens.

Android Layout XML: Divider below Listview

Because of the design of the app, I need to do the following:
(I reduced the problem as much as possible - and searched in other answers, but havent found my problem exactly)
As you can see in the picture, I have following components:
Listview
GreenDivider with a fixed size of 1dp
Button-Area
The Listview is on top, the button-area in the bottom and the divider between them. The Listview is variable in its size.
Following is the difficult part:
The divider has always be visible.
The divider has always to be above the button-area. If the listview does not use the entire available space, the divider has to be exactly below the listview. If the Listview uses more space than available, the divider has to be exactly above the button-area. And of course, the listview should be scrollable.
I tried a long time with relative layout and also with weight in linearlayout. If you got a solution, please share your idea with me.

Use a relative layout as your top level. set the footer to alignBottom, and the LinearLayout that contains the Listview and the separator to layout_above="#id/footer". I have edited your xml to solve your problem (I think its properly formed but SO isn't the best editor).

I would declare two dividers and give them each an id.
Then, programatically, I would check the size of the list view against the size of its container.
If the listview is bigger than the container I would make the divider parked above the buttons "visible" and the one below the listview "gone"
etc...
Truthfully, I'd probably just align it above the buttons and call it a day.

The footer is another .xml file (footer.xml) that will be inflated in the FOOTER LinearLayout.
I tried to change FOOTER to RelativeLayout and add android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" to the footer.xml LinearLayout, but it did not work.

Since all of your LinearLayout in you XML are "wrap_content", you need to set the weight of one of them to be "1" so that guy will actually takes all the possible space. I would give it to the "Main View". basically you should add android:layout_weight="1" to it.
Changing footer to relativelayout won't work. those "relative parent bottom" stuff works if the PARENT is relative layout. not the child.
Try adding
android:layout_weight="1"
To the LinearLayout you want to take up all of the extra vertical space (I assume this would be the one under your Main view comment?)
That will force the footer linear layout to the bottom of its parent.
Also, you may want to consider just using an include tag for your footer.xml layout instead of placing it as a child of your LinearLayout with id FOOTER.
So you should be able to remove the LinearLayout with id FOOTER altogether and replace it with an include tag.
Something like:

I can't see any reason why changing the patent layout to relative wouldn't work. Try removing all of the XML except the footer and see if it works. Then add it back in bit by but

Android ScrollView and buttons at bottom of the screen

I want to implement this: A ScrollView that contains many elements (ImageViews, TextViews, EditTexts etc) and then after the ScrollView some buttons (which are custom ImageViews) that appear always exactly at the bottom of the screen.
If I use the android:fillViewport="true" attribute, then if the elements of the ScrollView are too big to fit in the screen size the buttons get invisible . If I use the android:Weight=1 attribute then the ScrollView gets only 50% of the Screen when the screen is big and it can fit (I want the buttons to take a small percentage, about 10%). If I set the android:Weight to bigger values then the buttons appear very small.
Please help! Maybe it is something simple that I overlooked but I’ve been banging my head for hours!

This worked for me. Give the scroll view a weight of 1. Put all the other widgets following the scroll view in a layout. The scroll view will grow enough to not block the rest.

just try to make scrollview as root elemen on xml layout

If you do not want to use RelativeLayout, it is better to use LinearLayout. This method is better in my opinion.

Android ListActivity - how to add a view below the ListView?

I'm trying to put a ProgressBar view below a ListView for a ListActivity. I want it to be always below the last row in the listView.
The ProgressBar, which is placed in a LinearLayout, does appear, as long as the list (which is filled by an adapter at runtime) is not exceeding the screen. As soon as the list is larger than the screen, the ProgressBar is no longer visible.

You should add a footer using :
list.addFooterView(footerView);
or doing it manually, but then consider using relative layouts, there are far more powerfull than linear layouts. And then place your footer below the list, or better, place your list and your empty view above your footerview.

Android: How can you align a button at the bottom and listview above?

I want to have a button at the bottom of the listview.
If I use relativeLayout/FrameLayout, it aligns but listView goes down to very botton.

A FrameLayouts purpose is to overlay things on top of each other. This is not what you want.
In your RelativeLayout example you set the ListViews height and width to MATCH_PARENT this is going to make it take up the same amount of space as its parent, and thus take up all of the space on the page (and covers the button).
Try something like:

The layout_weight dictates how the extra space is to be used. The Button does not want to stretch beyond the space it requires, so it has a weight of 0. The ListView wants to take up all of the extra space, so it has a weight of 1.
You could accomplish something similar using a RelativeLayout, but if it is just these two items then I think a LinearLayout is simpler.

I needed two buttons side-by-side at the bottom. I used a horizontal linear layout, but assigning android:layout_height="0dp" and android:layout_weight="0" for the buttons' linear layout didn't work. Assigning android:layout_height="wrap_content" for just the buttons' linear layout did. Here's my working layout:

RelativeLayout will ignore its children android:layout_width or android:layout_height attributes, if the children have attributes that properly define their left and right or top and bottom values, respectively.

The key is to define android:layout_alignParentTop (defines top value) and android:layout_above (defines bottom value) in your RecyclerView. This way, RelativeLayout will ignore android:layout_height="match_parent", and the RecyclerView will be placed above the Button.
Also, make sure you look into android:layout_alignWithParentIfMissing, if you have a more complex layout and you still need to define these values.
I am using Xamarin Android, and my requirement is exactly the same as William T. Mallard, above, i.e. a ListView with 2 side-by-side buttons under it.
The solution is this answer didn't work in Xamarin Studio however - when I set the height of the ListView to "0dp", the ListView simply disappeared.

I aligned ButtonsLinearLayout to the bottom of the screen, and set the ListView to be above ButtonsLinearLayout.

In your relative layout height of listview is match_parent which is fill_parent(for 2.1 and older) so best solution is if you want to use relative layout then first Declare your button then your list view, make list view position as above your button id, If you want button always at bottom then make it alignParentBottom..

This prevents your list view taking whole place and make your button appear..
