Android listview with horizontal lines when empty - android

I have a Listview in my Android app, and I want there to be some horizontal lines when the list is empty to indicate to the user that this is a List. I know that there is the setEmptyView method on ListView, but I'm not sure what to put in that view if I want there to be list rows with horizontal lines. How would I accomplish this?

Having a bunch of horizontal lines for an empty list is an iOS convention. If you want your app to fit in with Android better you should set something else. Perhaps notify the user there was an error or that there are no items in the list. You can add this right to your layout.xml file if you're using a ListActivity. All you need to do is create a view and give it the id #android:id/empty.

put the listView in a FrameLayout and add another view in that Frame.
if you having any item in the list hide its (visiblity="gone") and show the other view.
OR
change your adapter to return multi ViewType
in your adapter if you have no item return other type of view

How to get the view in a custom list view at a specific position? Android?

Let me explain this--
For example - I have a custom list view set up that shows 3 text fields in a group.. I.e. each click able item in that list view will have 3 texts.. so now I want to get the 2nd text view at the 5th index of that listview...How to achieve this?
If a have a basic listview with only one item at each index, then this can be achieved by using getItemAtPosition().
Is this similar in the above case also?
You don't. THe entire point of a listview is that it DOESNT create views for every element in the list- only the ones on screen. So if your list is more than trivially long, it probably doesn't have a view for that item. If you think you need this, you're probably architecting your code wrong for a listview.

Inner List in Android

I have a problem with lists.
I want to implement a scrollable big list, each element of which contains a text on the left side and a NON-scrollable inner list on the right side. (for example: the name of the flat and the list of its inhabitants names)
Both lists should be filled from the cursors and contain an informatio about them: I want to have an oppurtunitz to get all cursos fields when I click an element of the inner list.
As far as I understood I's not possible to solve it with two ListViews. ExpandableListView does not pass me because I do not want to expand the first list, I want to have the inner list always visible.
Do you have any ideas how can I realize it?
Try using a ListView for your big list, and an empty LinearLayout in each item. You fill the LinearLayout of each item programmatically in the big list adapters getView(..) method, where int position is the item number.

Edit: Or use an ExpandableListView, which items you expand programmatically without animation with expandGroup(int position, boolean animate). Prevent collapsing by setting an ExpandableListView.OnGroupCollapseListener, in which you expand the group again. (seems a bit hacky)

Alternate for a listview with single row

I have a ImageView with a TextView and Button. I have it currently in a custom list view, but I noticed now that I don't need to show more as one element (object). So I actually don't need a Listview to show the row (list entry). How can I show the list entry without a Listview?
You can put the elements of your custom listview item into a Layout, e.g. LinearLayout and simply add it to your activity's layout where you needed it.
You can set an OnClickListener for that layout, so user can click the whole thing.
I think you should use ListActivity. Then you can set up empty view for list. Here some tutorial: ListActivity and ListView Tips.
Also you can implement that logic with Recycler view by yourself or use library.

It sounds like you want a create your own View for each item in your listview.
This view would probably be a LinearLayout that you could programatically add new views to. Simply loop through your list within each item, generate the textview / image / whatever that you need, and add it to the linearlayout.
Note: your inner list can't be scrollable independently of the main listview.

Just like a ListView but instead it doesn't scroll. Its content is added programatically via an ArrayAdapter. Is there any view that can be used for this purpose?
PS: Not LinearLayout, since it doesn't get its content from an adapter (I want the observer pattern)
Edit: Let me explain a little bit more. Suppose you need a list of items, but the list itself is not scrollable, what is scrollable is the screen.
That being said, the list of items should show ALL items, not a limited amount based on a fixed height. The way to go is LinearLayout as it is both non-scrollable and shows all items within itself.
But there is a third requierement. You don't want to add(View) directly, but instead, you want something similar to an ArrayAdapter so that you have a control of the items and their position, so you can handle on item click events based on their position. As far as I know, this can't be done using a LinearLayout. So my question is, does any view exist for this purpose?
You could try using a ListView, but disable scrolling, as described here
Put your layout inside a ScrollView and yes you have to use a Linearlayout. You need to set tag for each of your view that you add dynamically and whenever your view is clicked you can get it's position by view.getTag() and perform the required operation.
Note : Adding views at run time may affect performance.
