my problem is an Android app, that uses android:Theme as a default style and android:Theme.Holo.Light for OSes of version 11 and newer and android:Theme.Holo.Light.DarkActionBar for v14 and newer.
The app project was created using the ADT Eclipse-wizzard, so the AndroidManifest.xml sets android:theme="#style/AppTheme", and there are three styles.xml files, one in the values, values-v11, and values-v14 folders respectively. The default styles.xml sets
<style name="AppBaseTheme" parent="android:Theme">
the styles.xml in values-v11 sets
<style name="AppBaseTheme" parent="android:Theme.Holo.Light">
and finally styles.xml in values-v14 sets
<style name="AppBaseTheme" parent="android:Theme.Holo.Light.DarkActionBar">
This worked nicely for quite some time. I've checked the appearance for gingerbread using an emulator and the Holo-theme on a Galaxy SIII.
But now, also the Samsung phone will only use the classic android:Theme, no matter what I set in the style.xmls. I've also tried to raise the minSdkVersion in AndroidManifest.xml to 16 and to set the Holo-theme in the default styles.xml. Cleaning up and rebuilding had no effect either.
The Holo-theme is happily ignored by the app, and I don't know where else I can try looking to fix things.
Any help or pointers are very much appreciated.

If I replace
android:theme="#style/AppTheme"
in AndroidManifest.xml with
android:theme="#style/AppBaseTheme"
everything works fine (AppBaseTheme is the platform-dependent parent theme for the customized platform-independent AppTheme). It somehow looks as if the Android runtime is lazy and does not care to look for the the most specific version of AppBaseTheme, but always takes the one found in values/styles.xml
Finally, after several unsuccessful cleans I took a different approach and tried to rename AppTheme to MyTheme (and updating the reference in AndroidManafest.xml accordingly). Now the app references the correct AppBaseTheme for each version of Android.

In my current project, when I select the Design tab in Android Studio 2.2.2 for a particular layout I get an error that says
Missing styles. Is the correct theme chosen for this layout?
and it goes on to say
Failed to find style 'textEditSuggestionItemLayout' in current theme
(42 similar errors not shown)
But, the actual layout renders OK in the Designer and at runtime.
There are lots of other S.O. posts on this, such as here and here and most of the answers seem to involve clearing the caches and restarting Android Studio, or selecting a different theme from the dropdown. I I have tried the first one but it didn't help. I haven't tried the second one yet because I don't really understand what a theme is.
Questions:
The error implies that there's an error in the theme itself. What
is that? Is the theme file part of my project, i.e., is it one
that I should be creating, editing, and that gets built and shipped
as part of my APK or is it only used in the developer IDE?
If I select a different theme from the dropdown how do I know what the
"correct" one is?
Since my project builds and runs OK as is, can I just ignore these
errors? In other words are these errors in my code or just a
problem with the development environment?

The only place the string 'theme' is used in my manifest is
android:theme="#style/Theme.FullScreen"
... and FullScreen is the theme specified in the dropdown.
I did a search in my project for the string "textEditSuggestionItemLayout" and Android Studio found no occurrences of it.
If you've recently updated AS or any of its components, then try to 'Invalidate caches & restart'.
Else, try choosing AppTheme from the Design tab or change it to AppTheme from the default one. Choose the one that conforms to your parent app theme in your styles.xml.
The cause of the error could be anything from malfunctioning IDE to selecting a theme not mentioned in your styles.xml (most likely).
You could do a project-wide search for textEditSuggestionItemlayout, or the other styles that it claims to miss.
These are either in your own res/values/styles.xml and/or res/values/themes.xml files, or they are provided within the SDK, which is why you see some suggestions to uncheck 'Automatically Pick Best' and pick a version you have installed. In some cases, the latest API version's rendering tools don't work.
As an example, if you have your style set at Theme.Holo, but you are using the AppCompatActivity, you'll get a rendering error that you must use a Theme.AppCompat (or descendant). These themes are changeable from the dropdown of the design editor.
You can see what themes/styles are applied to your Activities within the AndroidManifest.xml.

If you are still missing themes, then you may be missing some dependency, such as
compile 'com.android.support:design:<your_version_here>'
If your code runs fine, then sure, ignore it, but I think getting the layout designer working again shouldn't be ignored.
I'm having a problem where my main activity's theme will not update in Android Studio.
I set my theme in styles.xml to android:Theme.Light, checked my main activity and saw it updated. I then changed my theme to android:Theme.Holo.Light but my main activity didn't update this time.
If I run the app on my device it looks how it should, so it's only Android Studio that's the problem.
I've tried to Sync Project with Gradle Files, but that didn't work (all files are in their default directories).
Is my only option to remake the app from scratch?

Looking around the GUI some more, I facepalmed when I found there's a refresh button for the Preview window which, when clicked, updated and displayed the correct theme.
I'm not proud of finding this either, if anything I'm ashamed I didn't think of this sooner.
After setting SeekBar with Holo style, I got warning that it's not supported pre-Holo APIs.
If I leave it this way, will this crash the app or pull pre-Holo style anyway? It does not crash on the emulator and I don't have 2.3.3 device.
The reason for asking his is odd behaviour. I tried to manually set style for Holo and pre-Holo using res/values-v11/ directories and placing styles.xml in each and setting the style of SeekBar to style="#style/settings_seekbar" .
Style for API 11+ looked like this

So it looked like this would work. But on either device with Android 4.0+, I don't see Holo's theme, but the old thick-yellow theme.
If this is the proper way of settings styles (in case the first solution will crash a device), where did I make a mistake thus Holo theme never appeared on newer devices?
It seems we can safely use a theme from the upper SDK because I found no indicators that it will ever crash the app.
If the theme does not exist, Android will use the appropriate lower-level theme.
The error we can see on the image is just a warning that UI will not look the same in the SDKs which do not support this theme.
I would like to deploy my app on APIs 8-17. However, for purely aesthetic reasons I would like to apply the default theme as it appears on api 8 as the theme for the app across all API levels.
For example, the older theme has an edittext that has an orangeish border around it, whereas the newer them uses a borderless blue line.
By limiting which APIs i deploy too I have been able to accomplish this but that isn't really a solution.
Does anyone know how this can be accomplished?

For whatever reason applying "Theme" as the theme did not force it to revert to the "Theme" theme, but instead left it as the default Holo. Using the answers below I simply called "Theme" as the parent in my custom theme (without altering any of its attributes) and set it as my application theme in the manifest. This solved it.
In your res/values directory, you can have a themes.xml file with:

Your app theme will now subclass from default Theme instead of Theme.Holo and you should be able to get older theme on newer android versions as well.
If you're using the default theme, it will be different between the API levels. However in the styles, you can create a custom Theme, modify an existing Theme or give a different Theme to each different API of your choice.
I have a couple of app that were created with Android 1.6 and after. The problem is when I run these app on recent Android (device or simulator) like ICS, I don't have the Holo theme.
I know i can find a lot of thread on how to specify the theme but when I create a new app now, I have the new theme without any lines of code.
I don't want to have ICS theme on all android version, just ICS theme on ICS, like new holo buttons style on ICS and old grey style for older. Now I just have grey buttons for all versions.
I can create new empty projects and copy all my files into it but there must be a hidden value somewhere to chenge this.
In my manifest I have:

What I'm understanding is that you want your app to switch between the legacy (classic) theme and the new Holo theme based on API version.
First, in your values (res/values) folder make a new xml. Call it styles.xml. It should contain these lines:

<style name="AppTheme" parent="#android:style/Theme.Black"/>
</resources>
Then make a new folder in res called values-v11. In this new folder make another new xml. Also name it styles.xml This file should contain these lines:
<resources>
<style name="AppTheme" parent="#android:style/Theme.Holo"/>
</resources>
Then in your AndroidManifest.xml you Application node should contain this line:
android:theme="#style/AppTheme"
Now on devices with Honeycomb or higher you get the Holo theme and for everything else, you get the old classic theme. You can easily experiment with this to suit your needs - this is the general way to switch between themes based on API version.
