In my app I have a header with icon hidden, I have a adapter with a listview when I click the listview I go to a login screen using listener, when the login is successful is should come back to listview(adapter) and icon should get visible on header. i am sending intent as follows: http://pastebin.com/4SKnyjVX
below is onclick the login button
public void onClick(View v) {
String password = etPassword.getText().toString();
if(password.equals("guest")){
Intent returnIntent = new Intent();
returnIntent.putExtra("result",result);
setResult(1,returnIntent);
finish();
} else {
//----
}
finish();
}
how can i use onActivityResult to set a flag and use this flag in click listener,
and also use it to make the icon visible. Any suggestion is appreciated
You have to override onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent resultIntent):
requestCode is the integer that you originally passed as the second parameter to startActivityForResult(). You should check this matches your original request, in case you have multiple requests you have to differentiate between.
resultCode and resultIntent is the integer and intent you pass to setResult() in your code above.
So your method should look something like:
#Override
public void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent resultIntent) {
if (requestCode == 1) { // original request
if (resultCode == 1) { // success
String result = resultIntent.getStringExtra("result");
// Login successful, update your model and call adapter.notifyDataSetChanged() or something
}
}
}
In your previous activity where you have listview with hidden icon in header, override the function onActivityResult() something like this -
protected void onActivityResult (int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) {
boolean success = data.getBooleanExtra("result", false);
if(success) {
hiddenIcon.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);
}
else {
showDialog("Error");
}
}
And I've changed your onClick this way
public void onClick(View v) {
String password = etPassword.getText().toString();
Intent returnIntent = new Intent();
if(password.equals("guest")){
returnIntent.putExtra("result", true);
setResult(RESULT_OK, returnIntent);
}
else {
returnIntent.putExtra("result", false);
setResult(RESULT_OK, returnIntent);
}
finish();
}
protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
super.onActivityResult(requestCode, resultCode, data);
if(resultCode==RESULT_OK){
Bundle basket=data.getExtras();
String s=basket.getString("result");
//Your Code Here
}
}

I'm trying to use onActivityResult to send a title, I've looked at the google implementation for the same task but it doesn't work me. Can someone help?
code for onActivityResult in mainActivity.
public void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data){
super.onActivityResult(requestCode, resultCode, data);
System.out.println("There is something coming to this function" + requestCode);
if(requestCode == NEW_TITLE_ACTIVITY_REQUEST_CODE && resultCode == RESULT_OK){
Title title = new Title(data.getStringExtra(notesSection.EXTRA_REPLY));
mTitleViewModel.insert(title);
}else{
Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), R.string.empty_not_saved, Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}
}
code in my notesSection activity.
finishFab.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
// System.out.println("Button Has Been Clicked From Notes Section");
Intent replyIntent = new Intent();
if (TextUtils.isEmpty(titleEdit.getText())){
// System.out.println("Empty?");
setResult(RESULT_CANCELED, replyIntent);
}else{
// System.out.println("Sending Something Supposedly");
String title = titleEdit.getText().toString();
// System.out.println("Sending " + title);
replyIntent.putExtra(EXTRA_REPLY, title);
setResult(RESULT_OK, replyIntent);
}
finish();
// startActivity(new Intent(notesSection.this, MainActivity.class));
}
});
FYI: When I print something in the onActivityResult function, nothing shows up on my run terminal, I don't know why this is, but I don't think the function is being reached for some reason. I will send more code if necessary.
Thanks.
In your first activity try starting second activity like this
static int NEW_TITLE_ACTIVITY_REQUEST_CODE = 1;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
---
---
---
// i assume you are starting activity on some button click
// so add following line in you button on click event
startActivityForResult(new Intent(MainActivity.this,notesSection.class),NEW_TITLE_ACTIVITY_REQUEST_CODE);
}
then override following method in your FIRST ACTIVITY
#Override
public void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, #Nullable Intent data) {
if (resultCode == Activity.RESULT_OK && requestCode == NEW_TITLE_ACTIVITY_REQUEST_CODE)
{
// do whatever you want
}
}
Also update your finish fab on click listener
finishFab.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
Intent replyIntent = new Intent();
if (TextUtils.isEmpty(titleEdit.getText())){
setResult(RESULT_CANCELED, replyIntent);
}
else{
replyIntent.putExtra("TITLE", titleEdit.getText().toString());
setResult(RESULT_OK, replyIntent);
}
finish();
}
});
Actually, this procedure has changed recently. You might want to take a look at the official documentation so that you can implement it according to your needs.
I have 2 activities in my Android application, Activity1 and Activity2.
I want to display the data retrieved from a String in Activity2 and this string value set text in Activity 1 textview when back is pressed from Activity2.
Please anyone give the solution for this problem,thanks in advance.
Activity 2: here I pass the string value to Activity 1 when I back press the Activity 2 this will be retrieved to Activity 1.
public void onBackPressed() {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
NoolDataBaseHelper db = new NoolDataBaseHelper(NoolDashboardDetailPage.this);
int strtext = db.getProfilesCount();
db.close();
Intent intent = new Intent();
intent.putExtra("Obj", strtext+"");
setResult(Activity.RESULT_OK, intent);
if (isclose) {
finish();
}
else
{
if (!isplays) {
inflateLoginlayout.setVisibility(View.GONE);
topview.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);
isplays = true;
//edtnames.getText().clear();
}
else
{
super.onBackPressed();
}
}
}
Activity1: here i retreive the string from Activity 2 and set the string value to my textview
#Override
protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) {
super.onActivityResult(requestCode, resultCode, data);
if (requestCode == 1) {
if (resultCode == Activity.RESULT_OK) {
String sSuName = data.getStringExtra("Obj");
txtfavouratecount.setText(sSuName);
} else if (resultCode == 0) {
}
}
}
You should follow this structure
In Activity 1
Intent intent=new Intent(Activity1.this,Activity2.class);
startActivityForResult(intent, 2);// Activity is started with requestCode 2
#Override
protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) {
super.onActivityResult(requestCode, resultCode, data);
// check the request code here is 2
if(requestCode==2){
if(resultCode == 3){ // check the result code
String message=data.getStringExtra("MESSAGE");
// set text for your textview
textView1.setText(message);
}
}
}
In Activity 2
public void onBackPressed() {
String message = "abc";
Intent intent=new Intent();
intent.putExtra("MESSAGE",message);
setResult(3,intent); // 3 is result code
super.onBackPressed();
}
Hope this help

How to manage startActivityForResult on Android
(14 answers)
Closed 8 years ago.
I am new to android development
I call an intent now how can i get result from called activity
can any one tell me how to perform this task ?
i have called intent like.
Intent I = new Intent (this ,abc.class);
startActivity(i);
thanks
Use startActivityForResult and then override onActivityResult in your FirstActivity.
In FirstActivity
Intent intent = new Intent(FirstActivity.this,SecondActivity.class);
startActivityForResult(intent, 2);// Activity is started with requestCode 2
Override onActivityResult
#Override
protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data)
{
super.onActivityResult(requestCode, resultCode, data);
// check if the request code is same as what is passed here it is 2
if(requestCode==2)
{
String message=data.getStringExtra("MESSAGE");
Log.i("Message is",message);
// logs Testing
}
}
In SecondAcivity
Intent intent=new Intent();
intent.putExtra("MESSAGE","Testing");
setResult(2,intent);
finish();//finishing activity
Reference to the docs:
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/app/Activity.html#startActivityForResult(android.content.Intent, int)
Example:
http://www.javatpoint.com/android-startactivityforresult-example
For going to second activity use startActivityForResult in your firstclass
Intent callIntent = new Intent(FirstClass.this, SecondClass.class);
startActivityForResult(callIntent, 1);
then override onActivityResult method in your first class like this
protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) {
// Check which request we're responding to
if (requestCode == 1) {
// Make sure the request was successful
if (resultCode == RESULT_OK) {
// get values from data
}
} }
In your second class do this for returning back, if you want to send
something to first class. Store this in your intent.
Intent result = new Intent(); setResult(Activity.RESULT_OK, result);
finish();
hi you can get result calling activity
Start activity with startActivityForResult(intent, 0);
add below method in calling activity
protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) {
if (requestCode == 0) {
if (resultCode == RESULT_OK) {
// do your task
} else if (resultCode == RESULT_CANCELED) {
// do your task
}
}
}
In your main Class....
static final int CODE_REQUEST = 1; // The request code
....
Intent pickContactIntent = new Intent(MainClass.this, CallingClassName.class);
startActivityForResult(pickContactIntent, CODE_REQUEST);
..........
#Override
protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) {
// Check which request we're responding to
if (requestCode == PICK_CONTACT_REQUEST) {
// Make sure the request was successful
if (resultCode == RESULT_OK) {
// The user picked a contact.
// The Intent's data Uri identifies which contact was selected.
// Do something with the contact here (bigger example below)
}
}
}
In your calling class
Intent result = new Intent();
setResult(Activity.RESULT_OK, result);
finish()
Here is my first activity code from where I call the second Activity:
#Override
public boolean onKeyDown(int keyCode, KeyEvent event) {
if (keyCode == KeyEvent.KEYCODE_DPAD_LEFT){
startActivityForResult(new Intent("chap.two.Chapter2Activity2"),request_Code);
}
return false;
}
#Override
public void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) {
if (requestCode == request_Code) {
if (resultCode == RESULT_OK)
Toast.makeText(this,data.getData().toString(),Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
}
And here is a code of chap.two.Chapter2Activity2:
Button n = (Button) findViewById(R.id.btn_OK);
n.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
Intent data = new Intent();
//---get the EditText view---
EditText txt_username =(EditText) findViewById(R.id.txt_username);
//---set the data to pass back---
data.setData(Uri.parse(txt_username.getText().toString()));
setResult(RESULT_OK, data);
//---closes the activity---
finish();
}
});
here I see that setResult(RESULT_OK, data) has two arguments but
onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) has three and I want know how onActivityResult gets value for third parameter? How it works can anyone tell me? Why isn't this error ?
When you call Activity.startActivityForResult(), you set the requestCode. Later, this request code is needed by onActivityResult() in order to determine what Activity is sending data to it. We don't need to supply requestCode again on setResult() because the requestCode is carried along.
The data is intent data returned from launched intent. We usually use this data when we set extras on the called intent.
Consider this example:
CALL SECOND ACTIVITY
Intent i = new Intent(MainActivity.this, CheckActivity.class);
startActivityForResult(i, REQUEST_CODE_CHECK);
ON SECOND ACTIVITY, SET INTENT RESULT
getIntent().putExtra("TADA", "bla bla bla");
setResult(RESULT_OK, getIntent());
finish();
BACK TO FIRST ACTIVITY, ONACTIVITYRESULT()
if(requestCode == REQUEST_CODE_CHECK && resultCode == RESULT_OK){
text1.setText(data.getExtras().getString("TADA") );
}
There you go. You should now understand what is Intent data and how to set and fetch the value.
Third parameter is Intent, which you sent from the sub-Activity(Second Activity, which is going to finish).
If you want to perform some calculations or fetch some username/password in sub-activity and you want to send the result to the main activity, then you place the data in the intent and will return to the Main activity before finish().
After that you will check in onActivityResult(int, int, Intent) in main activity for the result with Intent parameter.
Example::
MainActivity:
public void onClick(View view) {
Intent i = new Intent(this, subActivity.class);
startActivityForResult(i, REQUEST_CODE);
}
#Override
protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) {
if (resultCode == RESULT_OK && requestCode == REQUEST_CODE) {
if (data.hasExtra("username") && data.hasExtra("password")) {
String username = data.getExtras().getString("username");
String password = data.getExtras().getString("password");
}
}
subActivity::
#Override
public void finish() {
// Create one data intent
Intent data = new Intent();
data.putExtra("username", "Bla bla bla..");
data.putExtra("password", "*****");
setResult(RESULT_OK, data);
super.finish();
}
When I my app is launched I am showing a splash screen. That page is been shown for 10 sec, running on a thread.
When it switches over to new activity on a result I want o hit a URL in server and I will be getting a return value which I can use for my further implements.
Here is my code:
private final int SPLASH_DISPLAY_LENGHT = 1000;
new Handler().postDelayed(new Runnable()
{
#Override
public void run()
{
Log.e("Handler ","run");
Intent myIntent = new Intent(getApplicationContext(), CaptureActivity.class);
startActivityForResult(myIntent, imgDL);
finish();
}
}, SPLASH_DISPLAY_LENGHT);
public void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, final Intent data)
{
super.onActivityResult(requestCode, resultCode, data);
if (requestCode == imgDL)
{
Log.e("onActivity Result","");
urlHitMethod("http://XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.com/banner_scan");
}
}
But here the onActivityResult is not called. How to fix this?
Also, please note than if you base activity (the one calling startActivityForResult) can't use the flag noHitory in the manifest.
If you do so, onActivityResult will never be called.
try this
Intent myIntent = new Intent(activity.this, CaptureActivity.class);
and
#Override
public void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, final Intent data)
{
super.onActivityResult(requestCode, resultCode, data);
if (requestCode == imgDL)
{
Log.e("onActivity Result","");
urlHitMethod("http://XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.com/banner_scan");
}
if(resultCode==RESULT_OK)
{
Log.e("onActivity Result","come in onactivity result ok");
}
else
{
Log.e("onActivity Result","come in onactivity result with error");
}
}
If you are using onActivityResult, then you should not finish the activity when starting with intent otherwise it will crash the app.
Thanks.
In the CaptureActivity.class you have to set the result and then check in the onActivityResult in the First Activity the result code
In the CaptureActivity.class it should be like the following
Intent in = new Intent();
setResult(1,in);//Here I am Setting the Requestcode 1, you can put according to your requirement
finish();
